DURING the opening of their new offices, the provincial leadership of the DisabledPeople of South Africa (DPSA) an-nounced that disabled people would haveprogrammes for the empowering and de-veloping of disabled people around smalltowns in the Eastern Cape.

Mncedisi Nkotha, the Eastern Capeprovincial manager of the DPSA saidtheir core business was to fight for therights of disabled people all over thecountry.

Owing to the challenges that disabledpeople are faced with, the provincialleadership saw it fit that there should be

programmes implemented to help disa-bled people to not feel inferior to individ-uals without disabilities.

Among the programmes set out for thedisabled people, is a free driving schoolthrough which a car would be circulatedamong the towns for active DPSA mem-bers with Learners’ Licences to practisetheir driving skills until getting their li-cences.

Another programme that would beconducted by the Bizana DPSA, is a door-to-door campaign to meet disabled peoplein the area.

“One of our biggest challenges is par-ents hiding their disabled children orfamily members because they areashamedof them,” saidNompikisoMazi-

yane, DPSA chairperson in Bizana.Maziyane said people should not be

ashamed of disabled family membersand that they should rather embrace theproblem by getting assistance.

The EC Provincial chairperson of theDPSA, Zilindile Hibhane, said this yearis about addressing a lot of challenges.

They also want to make sure that indi-viduals infringing on the rights of disa-bled people are dealt with accordingly.

The chairperson of the DPSA Bizana,Nompikiso Maziyane, said they were veryhappy to have an office that they could calltheir own, since it was long overdue.

During the opening of the office, DPSA

members of Bizana were encouraged to takegood care of the office. Twabu said trainingon how to use the office would be conductedto prevent misuse of office equipment.

“We will continue working with the organi-sation and help in every way we can to keepthe DPSA active.”
