THE NEWS

June 2016

As the winter days are getting colder and colder, and everyone is adding layers to keep warm, our residents can

also be seen with colourful scarves and beanies, to keep out the winter chill. Anton Chekhov said “People don't

notice whether it's winter or summer when they're happy.” So at Forest Farm we are really striving to make the

residents happy, to forget about the cold, and the month has been filled with activities, as you will see from the

content of this newsletter.

The monthly birthday bash was celebrated on the 27th of May. 14 residents celebrated their birthdays in style, and

these photos show the fun residents had singing and dancing along to old favourites like ‘Chiquitita’ and ‘Dancing

Queen’.

Mary Bornman, an official Boccia coach, came to demonstrate the game on the 20th of May. This game can be

played even by severely disabled players. A set of competition balls and instruction DVD’s were donated to Forest

Farm. Two of our staff members have been invited to attend a referee course on the 30th of July.

The male residents were transported into a land of fun and laughter at the Mens’ High Tea on Saturday, 28 May.

Hans, Ashley, the 'Briel sisters' (Sr Elize, Louise and Bertie), the housemothers and the residents provided musical

entertainment, Drienie handed out prizes, and staff served their guests with lots of tasty goodies. This day will long

be remembered, and the ladies can’t wait for their turn in August.

day and year ahead.

I am sure everyone is aware of our green recycling container for paper. We have now applied for containers for

glass and plastic, and will inform everyone once this is operational. We would then like to encourage you to use

these when you visit your loved ones. This project will be a source of income for Forest Farm.

We would like to thank people for their overwhelmingly positive response to our appeal for bath sheets, both in

cash and kind. We are asking for your continued support, however, so we can deliver our services at their full

potential in the coming months, and can continue to bring happiness and comfort to our residents. Our needs

currently are as follows:

Karaoke Videos

New Notice Board

Shelving for Bookshop

Upholstery Services

Arts and Crafts Supplies, example looms, beads, paints, etc.

Wool and Material

The following appeal appeared in the Sandton Chronicle during the last week of May, and this appeal was also

broadcast on 91.9 Hot FM. As a result we have received a donation of a piano, as well as a Roland Keyboard. We

also received an offer of the use of an extensive music collection for any function we have in future. We are

extremely grateful for these generous donations from members of the public, and ask that families/friends

contribute by donating percussion instruments such as drums, cymbals, triangles, maracas, timpani, etc. We would

like to start a music therapy group and these instruments would assist us in this regard.

WOW - Words of Wisdom

from our Residents

These are the things that make us happy…

• Amelda – when people make me laugh, or

listening to music.

• Jasper – watching TV, or listening to music,

especially country music and Boeremusiek.

• Jean – working in the workshop and

knitting.

• Eddie – listening to music, expecially

country music, going to church, and

watching sports, especially rugby (he is a

Blue Bulls supporter).

• Nicky – listening to music, such as gospel or

country music, and visiting my mom.

• Tammy – being loved and when people

demonstrate their care.
