GAMENOTES - FGCU AT INDIANA (NOV. 12)

SCOUTING THE HOOSIERSEntering the 111th season in program history, Indiana is led by head coach Tom Crean who is in his third season. With a roster that features no seniors and eight underclassmen, the Hoosiers were predicted to finish eighth in the preseason Big Ten poll. IU survived a scare in its last exhibition game, coming back from a 13-point second half deficit to defeat Ferris State, 78-65, in over-time. The Hoosiers were without Big Ten All-Conference honor-able mention guard Verdell Jones III who is hampered by a ankle injury and 7-foot center Guy-Marc Michel who is awaiting clearance from the NCAA. Sophomore Maurice Creek is the team's leading returning scorer at 16.4 points per contest, but is also returning from a season-ending injury that caused him to miss the final 19 games of last year. Creek averaged 15.5 points and six boards over the team's two exhibition games. Classmate Christian Watford made his way onto the Big Ten All-Freshmen team last year, after leading all league newcomers in scoring (12.0) and rebounding (6.0). Watford is primed for a breakout sophomore season, scoring 25 points in each of the exhibition contests.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! The first of three TV games this year for the Eagles, Friday night's game will appear on the Big Ten Network on channel 610 for Direc-TV users and 742 for Comcast subscribers. FGCU will also appear on the Big Ten Network on Dec. 15 when it heads to Ohio State.

AGAINST THE BIG TENFriday night's game at Indiana will mark the fourth straight year FGCU has taken on a member of the Big Ten. The Eagles are 0-3 all-time against the Big Ten after opening last season at No. 2 Michigan State and heading to Ann Arbor to face Michigan dur-ing the 2008-09 season.

AGAINST BCS OPPONENTSFGCU is 1-9 all-time against BCS foes after picking up a win over BIG EAST opponent DePaul last season at Alico Arena. DePaul was the first BCS men's basketball program to come to Fort My-ers, while all other nine contests have been played on the road. IU is the first of four BCS foes FGCU will square off against this season. The Eagles will play host to Miami on Nov. 27 while travel-ing to Arkansas and Ohio State.

INSIDE-OUT THREATFGCU welcomes back eight players from last year's club includ-ing its top two leading scorers in redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS (12.9 ppg) and senior REED BAKER (11.4 ppg). A combination of Banks or Baker led the Eagles in scoring 23 of 29 contests, while both reached double figures in the same game 12 times. An active body on the boards, Banks hauled in 100 offensive rebounds last season while shooting 57 percent from the floor. Baker did a majority of his damage from the perimeter, knocking down a team-best 49 three-pointers.

BOARD WORKNot equipped with a lot of size in the paint, FGCU makes up for it by staying active on the offensive glass. Led by preseason All-Conference choice ANTHONY BANKS, the Eagles ranked third in the Atlantic Sun in 2009-10 in offensive rebounds per game (13.6). Banks led that charge, grabbing 100 offensive caroms, resulting in him ranking second in the league. Banks grabbed an offensive rebound in each of the last 28 games, including five or more nine times. Banks totaled nine offensive boards against Jacksonville (Jan. 9), starting a three-game stretch in which he grabbed 21.

HIGH EXPECTATIONSFGCU seven-member incoming class earned some praise from Hoop Scoop Online over the summer, as the second-best class in the A-Sun Conference. Not included in that ranking was Ole Miss transfer KEVIN CANTINOL, who is eligible after the first semester.

INDIANA CONNECTIONPrior to FGCU, head coach DAVE BALZA spent three seasons at the helm of Division II Saint Joseph's in Indiana. Balza won 18 games in his third year in a league that included three top-10 teams in the country. As a result, Balza was selected as the 2001 GLVC Coach of the Year and the Region Coach of the Year.

TRIPLE B'SWith the scoring punch of Banks and Baker returning, FGCU will also turn to sophomore wing SHERWOOD BROWN for a big second season. Brown had a solid ending to his freshman season, scoring in double figures in three of the last five games. Playing just under 17 minutes per game, Brown posted averages of 4.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in 2009-10.

POINT GUARD BY COMMITTEEThe point guard position will be up for grabs at the beginning of the year, as sophomore returner HUNTER MILLER and junior college transfer MARLON RIVERA will battle for the reigns. Miller started the final seven games of last season and finished second on the club with 67 assists. Rivera, an All-Mid-Florida Conference first team choice at Santa Fe CC last year, brings a physical presence to the point guard spot. The 6-foot-2 Rivera ranked in the top 20 in the nation in assists per game in each of his two seasons at Santa Fe.

YOU CAN BANK ON ITThe versatility of ANTHONY BANKS was on full display in 2009-10, as the then-redshirt freshman made his way onto the A-Sun's All-Rookie team. Banks led the Eagles in five different categories and was the only player to start all 29 games. Over the 29 games, Banks led FGCU in scoring 11 times and rebounding on 14 occa-sions, including both in the same game four times. Banks reached double figures in 21 games with five double-doubles. Below is a look how Banks stacked up against the rest of the A-Sun.

BANKS NAMED A-SUN PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMRedshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS became the first player in program history to earn preseason accolades from A-Sun since FGCU joined the conference in 2007-08. Banks is one of just three underclassmen on the 12-man All-Conference team.

An A-Sun All-Rookie team selection a year ago, Banks led the Eagles in both scor-ing (12.9) and rebounding (6.6) in 2009-10, figures that ranked 11th and eighth in the A-Sun, respectively. Banks finished in double figures 21 times, including a team-best four 20-point efforts. A native of Lantana, Fla., Banks ranked third in the A-Sun in field goal percentage (.567) and turned in five double-doubles. He led the team in scoring 11 times, rebounding on 14 occasions and both in the same game four times.

This past summer, Banks underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured bone in his right foot. Banks suffered a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot while playing over the summer and it’s the same injury that he suffered in 2008-09, but on the oppo-site foot.

OFF AND RUNNINGWith a highly-decorated incoming class, head coach DAVE BALZA will turn to several of those seven newcomers for big minutes right away. Junior college transfer TIM SNYDER figures to give the FGCU frontline a boost, while freshmen CHASE FIELER and CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL will supply solid scoring at the guard position. Fieler, a West Virginia Player of the Year candidate last season, averaged 25.3 points per game at Parkersburg South. Varidel averaged 17.6 points at Worcester Prep in Massachusetts last year and was Switzer-land's leading scoring in each of the last two U-20 European Championships.

TAKING AIMSenior shooting guard REED BAKER will look to become just the third player in Atlantic Sun history to lead the conference in free throw percentage three straight years. Baker, a transfer from Michigan, led the A-Sun in free throw percentage in each of the last two seasons. Baker is also the Eagles' primary threat from beyond the arc, as the Naples, Fla. product has 109 trifec-tas to his credit over two years in the Blue and Green.

CHRISTMAS WILL COME EARLYRedshirt sophomore Anthony Banks and the rest of the FGCU bigs will get a boost on Dec. 15 at nationally-ranked Ohio State when junior transfer KEVIN CANTINOL becomes eligible. The 6-foot-9, 253-lb. Ole Miss transfer came to FGCU mid-way through last season and is required to sit out a full year due to NCAA rules.

BIO The first and only coach in FGCU men’s basketball history, Dave Balza is in his ninth season at the helm of the program. In May 2001, Balza was selected from over 200 can-didates to be the program's first men's basketball head coach. Balza's teams are renowned for playing an excit-ing, up-tempo, hard-nosed basketball. His FGCU teams have posted a combined 143-101 record (.586 winning percentage) over the first eight years of competition. In 2007-08, Balza led the Eagles into their first season at the Division I level as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Since then, Balza and his staff have landed back-to-back recruiting classes ranked in the top three in the A-Sun by Hoop Scoop Online. This year’s incoming class of eight players ranked second in the league. Balza’s eye for talent at the Division I level has started to come to fruition, as the Eagles have landed a player on the A-Sun All-Freshmen team the last two years. In

2008-09, Reggie Chambers became the first FGCU player to ever make the rookie squad, while Anthony Banks was unanimous choice last year. Banks’ abilities also earned praise from the league coaches this past October when he became the first player in program history named to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference team. FGCU has been competitive over its first three years in Division I, producing a 29-62 record heading into its fourth and final transition year in 2010-11. Arguably, the biggest win in the brief three-year Division I history of the program came in 2009-10 when FGCU defeated BIG EAST foe DePaul, 64-61, at Alico Arena for its first-ever win over a BCS school. Balza and the Eagles will be eligible for postseason play in 2010-11. Hired a year before the program started, Balza led FGCU to a 114-39 record over its five seasons in Division II (2002-07). Over those five campaigns, the Eagles pro-duced four 20-win seasons, highlighted by a 27-6 mark in their final year (2006-07) before entering Division I. Three of the team’s six losses that year came to Division I com-

petition (Drexel, Penn, Butler). In 2004-05, Balza guided the Eagles to a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament - their first year eligible for post-season selection. The Eagles 24-7 mark was the most wins in program history at that point, while the Blue and Green posted the best rebounding margin in NCAA Divi-sion II (+10.2). Balza's Eagles went 22-5 in 2003-04, opening the season by winning their first 14 games, The Eagles were ranked in the top-20 in the nation for the entire year, reach-ing as high as No. 5. They ran their home winning streak to 29 games and were the only Division II team in the country with victories over Division I teams (Eastern Illinois, IPFW) on consecutive nights. In FGCU's inaugural season in 2002-03, Balza led the Eagles to a 23-9 record. They opened Alico Arena with a 14-0 home mark on the season and averaged 82 points per game. Balza prepared for his task of building the FGCU pro-gram from scratch by helping to rebuild three struggling programs. He made his mark as a head coach at St. Jo-seph's (Indiana) in the vaunted Great Lakes Valley Confer-ence, considered the premier Division II basketball confer-ence in the nation. One week before classes began, Balza took over a St. Joseph's program that had been placed on two-year pro-bation by the NCAA and proceeded to win more confer-ence games than in the previous two seasons combined. More important, he restored a clean image to a program steeped in tradition. After wading through the penalties of the two-year probation, he won 18 games in his third year in a league that included three top-10 teams in the country. As a result, Balza was selected as the 2001 GLVC Coach of the Year and the Region Coach of the Year. Balza was also an assistant at Division II Ashland (Ohio) from 1996-98 and spent five years as an assistant at Divi-sion I Cleveland State from 1991 to 1996. Both of those coaching staffs took over programs that had been placed on probation and had great success turning around the fortunes of their teams, winning 18 games at Ashland and 22 games at Cleveland State in just his second year at each institution. At Cleveland State, Balza made his name as a recruiter, helping to assemble one of the top 35 recruiting classes in the country. Balza has preached of "building a first class tradition" since taking the reins at Florida Gulf Coast University. He

has molded the Eagles into a model program for integrity on the basketball floor, in the classroom, and in the com-munity. Academic success and community involvement are just as important to Balza as on-court preparation. His Eagles have never had a semester team GPA below a 2.70 and have hovered at or above a 3.0 cumulative GPA for most of his tenure. In addition, Balza's teams have been very active in the community, helping the athletics program reach more than 10,000 youngsters in Southwest Florida through events such as: Eagle Reading, Eagle Math, Com-munity Reach Out Program, Habitat for Humanity, Hoops for the Heart, visits to hospitals, and volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. A native of South Haven, Mich., Balza is a 1991 gradu-ate of the University of Michigan, where he served first as a student manager with the 1989 National Championship team and later as a student assistant and video coordina-tor. Balza earned a master's degree in education from Cleveland State University in 1993. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and has been published in the NABC Courtside magazine on the topic of post play. Balza now resides in Fort Myers with his wife, Karrie, and daughter, Faith.
