GAME8 - FGCU AT #2 OHIO STATE (DEC. 15)

SCOUTING THE BUCKEYESLed by two-time Big Ten Player of the Week freshman Jared Sullinger, No. 2 Ohio State enters with an 8-0 record and No. 2 in both the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 poll. Sullinger had a record-setting week in wins vs. IUPUI and West-ern Carolina to earn his second Big Ten Conference Player of the Week and fourth Freshmen of the Week awards. Against IUPUI, Sullinger poured in 40 points, an Ohio State freshman record and the first 40-point game for a Buckeye since 1986. He is the first Big Ten freshman to earn player of the week honors twice in a season since Greg Oden did so for the Buckeyes in 2006-07. Sullinger leads Ohio State with 18.0 points per game, while senior David Lighty, who is fully recovered from a broken foot this summer, is second on the team with 12.5 points. Junior William Buford (11.7), freshman Deshaun Thomas (11.6) and senior Jon Diebler (11.3) round out the quintet of double figure scorers. Buford is just 14 points away from becoming the third active OSU player (Lighty, Diebler) to reach the 1,000-point plateau. The Buckeyes have held four opponents to less than 50 points and own a +23.6 scoring margin. Head coach Thad Matta has led Ohio State to 8-0 starts three times over his seven-year tenure in Columbus. The Buckeyes started 11-0 in 2005-06 and 9-0 in 2008-09.

TRADITION VS. FUTUREEntering just the ninth season in program history, including the fourth in Division I, FGCU will square off against an Ohio State program that has been in existence since 1898-99 (112th year) and has nine Finals Fours (1939, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1968, 2007), four national runner-ups and one National Champion-ship (1960) to its credit. FGCU joined the Atlantic Sun in 2007-08, while Ohio State has been a member of the Big Ten since 1912.

AGAINST THE BIG TENWednesday night's game at Ohio State will be the fifth time FGCU has taken on a member of the Big Ten. The Eagles are 0-4 all-time against the Big Ten after falling to Indiana, 88-60, in the season opener.

AGAINST BCS OPPONENTSFGCU is 1-12 all-time against BCS foes after picking up a win over BIG EAST opponent DePaul last season at Alico Arena. DePaul was the first BCS men's basketball program to come to Fort My-ers, while all other 12 contests have been played on the road. INSIDE-OUT THREATThe inside-out combination of redshirt sophomore forward AN-THONY BANKS and senior guard REED BAKER give FGCU one of the most prolific scoring duos in the A-Sun. Both have finished in double figures in five of seven games and have led the Eagles in scoring 30 of their 36 contests together, including 12 straight, dating back to last season. For their careers, both have reached double figures in the same game 17 times and currently stack up as the third-best scoring tandem in the A-Sun. The duo has com-bined to score 30 or more points four times this season and 40 or more twice. Baker and Banks ranks third and eighth, respectively, in scoring, while the three teams supply six of the top eight scor-ers in the league.

SPALDING DIETRedshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS has been on a strict rebounding diet over the last three games, collecting 10.7 caroms per contest - the best three-game stretch of his career. Banks has grabbed a staggering 21 offensive boards over the three games, including nine against ACC foe Miami which equaled his career-best. Banks leads the A-Sun in offensive rebounds per game (4.4) and as of Dec. 9 ranked tied for eighth in the nation. He currently ranks fifth overall in the A-Sun at 7.4 caroms per contest.

GOING OUT WITH A BANGAfter transferring to FGCU after his freshman season at Michigan, senior REED BAKER is having the best season of his collegiate career. Baker ranks third in the A-Sun in scoring at 17.7 points per game. Baker has finished in double figures in six of seven games, including 20 or more a team-best three times. The Naples, Fla. product also ranks second in the conference in steals per game (2.7) and free throw percentage (.872).

ON THE OFFENSIVENot equipped with a lot of size in the paint, FGCU makes up for it by staying active on the offensive glass. Led by preseason All-Conference choice ANTHONY BANKS, the Eagles lead the A-Sun in offensive rebounds per game (15.2). FGCU has grabbed double figure offensive boards in 34 of its last 37 games, including all seven this season. A year removed from grabbing 100 offen-sive caroms, Banks already has 31 this season to lead the A-Sun, including 21 in his last three games. As a team, FGCU has 50 of-fensive rebounds in its last three contests.

20/20 VISIONThe A-Sun's second leading scorer, senior REED BAKER has reached the 20-point plateau a league-high three times already this season. Baker was joined by junior TIM SNYDER in the 20-point club at Grambling, while ANTHONY BANKS scored 21 points to Baker's 20 against Miami. The two games marked the fourth and fifth time, respectively, that a pair of players has gone for at least 20 points in the same game since FGCU joined Division I. Baker has been a part of four of the five occasions. The Naples, Fla. product has 12 career 20-point games.

THE FLOOR GENERALJunior MARLON RIVERA has taken over the reins of the point guard position with his strong play on both ends of the court. Rivera is one of four players in the A-Sun in the top 15 in assists per game, rebounds per game and steals per game. The FGCU floor general has dished out nine assists in each of FGCU's two home games and ranks fifth in the league in assists per contest (4.4). Rivera's 5.7 rebounds per game rank 15th in the A-Sun, while his five steals last game at Jacksonville moved him to ninth in the league (1.9). Rivera also averages 7.9 points and has reached double figures twice.

LAST TIME OUT: FGCU FALLS AT JACKSONVILLE(Box Score on Page 32)JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The FGCU men’s basketball team battled back from a slow start, but couldn’t hold on as Jacksonville used its athleticism and full court pressure to defeat the Eagles, 71-56, in an Atlantic Sun tilt on Dec. 4. The Dolphins never let FGCU get into an offensive rhythm, limiting the Eagles to a 29 percent (17-59) shooting clip from the field while forcing the visitors into 20 turnovers. Redshirt sophomore ANTHO-NY BANKS continued his strong play with 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the year. Banks’ game-high 14 rebounds featured seven on the offensive end, giving the 6-foot-6 forward 21 offensive caroms over the last three contests. Led by Banks, the Eagles somewhat made up for their 29 percent shooting night by grabbing 15 offensive rebounds, marking the 34th time in the last 37 games they have totaled double-digit offensive boards. Over the last three games, FGCU has 50 offensive rebounds.

LICENSE TO STEALAlong with his scoring prowess, senior REED BAKER has upped his game on the defensive end with 19 steals over the first seven games. Just a year ago, Baker registered just 25 steals and is just six away from equaling that total. With an average of 2.7 steals per game, Baker ranks second in the A-Sun behind JU's Ayron Hardy (3.1) - a two-time A-Sun Defen-sive Player of the Year. For his career, Baker has 18 multi-steal games, highlighted by seven against ETSU on Jan. 12, 2009 - the second most in single-game history. Baker nearly equaled his career-high with six last game at UNF.

SPARK PLUGNow seven games into his collegiate career, freshman CHRIS-TOPHE VARIDEL is starting to feel comfortable in his role off the bench. Over three games off the pine, Varidel is averaging 11 points compared to 5.5 points over four games as a starter. Both of Varidel's double figure scoring efforts have come off the bench, including a season-best 16 points at UNF in the A-Sun opener. EAGLE TRENDS

OH WHAT A NIGHTFGCU opened its home schedule in style on November 16, scoring a program Division I record 89 points during a win over Southeast Missouri. Senior REED BAKER led the scoring frenzy with a career-high 28 points to fuel a 53-point second half. Junior MAR-LON RIVERA just missed recording a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

SEEING DOUBLE, ALMOST TRIPLEPlaying in just his second game at the Division I level, junior MARLON RIVERA fell just one assist shy of become the first player in FGCU history to register a triple-double against Southeast Missouri on Nov. 16. Rivera's dominating performance on both ends of the court featured 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists over 33 minutes.

MR. EFFICIENCYAfter finishing second in the A-Sun in field goal percentage as a freshman in 2009-10, ANTHONY BANKS is out to take over the crown in his second campaign. Through six games, Banks sports a 51 percent (42-82) clip from the field, good for 12th in the confer-ence. A career 55 percent (195-352) shooter, Banks has made 50 percent or better from the field in 26 of 36 career games.

TAKING AIMAfter becoming just the fourth player in Atlantic Sun history to lead the conference in free throw percentage two straight years (08-09, 09-10), senior REED BAKER will look to become just the second player to accomplish the feat in three straight seasons. Belmont's Steve Drabyn (01-04) is the only player in A-Sun history to lead the league three consecu-tive years. Baker is off to a great start, drilling 41-of-47 shots from the charity stripe so far this season, including his last 19, to sit second in the A-Sun at 87.2 percent.

BIO The first and only coach in FGCU men’s basketball history, Dave Balza is in his ninth season at the helm of the program. In May 2001, Balza was selected from over 200 can-didates to be the program's first men's basketball head coach. Balza's teams are renowned for playing an excit-ing, up-tempo, hard-nosed basketball. His FGCU teams have posted a combined 143-101 record (.586 winning percentage) over the first eight years of competition. In 2007-08, Balza led the Eagles into their first season at the Division I level as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Since then, Balza and his staff have landed back-to-back recruiting classes ranked in the top three in the A-Sun by Hoop Scoop Online. This year’s incoming class of eight players ranked second in the league. Balza’s eye for talent at the Division I level has started to come to fruition, as the Eagles have landed a player on the A-Sun All-Freshmen team the last two years. In

2008-09, Reggie Chambers became the first FGCU player to ever make the rookie squad, while Anthony Banks was unanimous choice last year. Banks’ abilities also earned praise from the league coaches this past October when he became the first player in program history named to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference team. FGCU has been competitive over its first three years in Division I, producing a 29-62 record heading into its fourth and final transition year in 2010-11. Arguably, the biggest win in the brief three-year Division I history of the program came in 2009-10 when FGCU defeated BIG EAST foe DePaul, 64-61, at Alico Arena for its first-ever win over a BCS school. Balza and the Eagles will be eligible for postseason play in 2010-11. Hired a year before the program started, Balza led FGCU to a 114-39 record over its five seasons in Division II (2002-07). Over those five campaigns, the Eagles pro-duced four 20-win seasons, highlighted by a 27-6 mark in their final year (2006-07) before entering Division I. Three of the team’s six losses that year came to Division I com-

petition (Drexel, Penn, Butler). In 2004-05, Balza guided the Eagles to a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament - their first year eligible for post-season selection. The Eagles 24-7 mark was the most wins in program history at that point, while the Blue and Green posted the best rebounding margin in NCAA Divi-sion II (+10.2). Balza's Eagles went 22-5 in 2003-04, opening the season by winning their first 14 games, The Eagles were ranked in the top-20 in the nation for the entire year, reach-ing as high as No. 5. They ran their home winning streak to 29 games and were the only Division II team in the country with victories over Division I teams (Eastern Illinois, IPFW) on consecutive nights. In FGCU's inaugural season in 2002-03, Balza led the Eagles to a 23-9 record. They opened Alico Arena with a 14-0 home mark on the season and averaged 82 points per game. Balza prepared for his task of building the FGCU pro-gram from scratch by helping to rebuild three struggling programs. He made his mark as a head coach at St. Jo-seph's (Indiana) in the vaunted Great Lakes Valley Confer-ence, considered the premier Division II basketball confer-ence in the nation. One week before classes began, Balza took over a St. Joseph's program that had been placed on two-year pro-bation by the NCAA and proceeded to win more confer-ence games than in the previous two seasons combined. More important, he restored a clean image to a program steeped in tradition. After wading through the penalties of the two-year probation, he won 18 games in his third year in a league that included three top-10 teams in the country. As a result, Balza was selected as the 2001 GLVC Coach of the Year and the Region Coach of the Year. Balza was also an assistant at Division II Ashland (Ohio) from 1996-98 and spent five years as an assistant at Divi-sion I Cleveland State from 1991 to 1996. Both of those coaching staffs took over programs that had been placed on probation and had great success turning around the fortunes of their teams, winning 18 games at Ashland and 22 games at Cleveland State in just his second year at each institution. At Cleveland State, Balza made his name as a recruiter, helping to assemble one of the top 35 recruiting classes in the country. Balza has preached of "building a first class tradition" since taking the reins at Florida Gulf Coast University. He

has molded the Eagles into a model program for integrity on the basketball floor, in the classroom, and in the com-munity. Academic success and community involvement are just as important to Balza as on-court preparation. His Eagles have never had a semester team GPA below a 2.70 and have hovered at or above a 3.0 cumulative GPA for most of his tenure. In addition, Balza's teams have been very active in the community, helping the athletics program reach more than 10,000 youngsters in Southwest Florida through events such as: Eagle Reading, Eagle Math, Com-munity Reach Out Program, Habitat for Humanity, Hoops for the Heart, visits to hospitals, and volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. A native of South Haven, Mich., Balza is a 1991 gradu-ate of the University of Michigan, where he served first as a student manager with the 1989 National Championship team and later as a student assistant and video coordina-tor. Balza earned a master's degree in education from Cleveland State University in 1993. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and has been published in the NABC Courtside magazine on the topic of post play. Balza now resides in Fort Myers with his wife, Karrie, and daughter, Faith.

Game #1Indiana (1-0) - 88FGCU (0-1) - 60Nov. 12, 2010 at Assembly Hall

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Behind 24 points from sophomore Christian Watford and 14 three-pointers, Indiana defeated the FGCU men’s basketball team, 88-60, in the season opener for both clubs on Friday night in front of 15,478 fans at historic Assembly Hall. Watford poured in 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to led three players in double figures for IU. The Hoosiers torrid shooting night included a 53 percent (30-57) clip from the field and 14-of-28 from long range. The game marked the third straight season the Eagles have opened up on the road against a BCS foe, as they fall to 0-1 heading into Tuesday’s home opener against Southeast Missouri State. The season-opening win was the 26th in a row for the Hoosiers. Redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS (pictured) showed no signs of just returning from a broken foot, leading the Blue and Green with 16 points and six rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Senior REED BAKER was the only other FGCU player in double figures with 12 points and three steals. Banks’ five offensive rebounds highlighted a night in which the Eagles grabbed 15 caroms on the offensive end. Just a year removed from grabbing 100 offensive boards, Banks has now grabbed five or more offensive rebounds in nine of 30 career contests.

Game #2FGCU (1-1) - 89Southeast Missouri (0-2) - 78Nov. 16, 2010 at Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Senior REED BAKER (pictured) poured in a career-high 28 points and a near triple-double from junior MARLON RIVERA led the FGCU men’s basketball team to a 53-point second half during a 89-78 win over Southeast Missouri, 89-78, in front of 2,011 fans at Alico Arena in its home opener on Tuesday night. The backcourt duo of Baker and Rivera combined for 44 points, as the Eagles’ 89 points were their most since entering Division 1 in 2007-08 and the most since Feb. 26, 2007 when they defeated North College and State, 99-62, at Alico Arena. Baker’s 10th career 20-point game came on 10-of-12 from the field and 7-of-11 from the charity stripe, as the Naples, Fla. product registered 13 points in the first half and 15 in the final frame. Rivera finished just one assist shy of the program’s first-ever triple-double, registering 16 points, 11 rebounds and a game-high nine assists in 33 minutes of action. Lost in the shuffle of the FGCU’s backcourt’s stellar play was redshirt sophomore Anthony Banks’ 16-point night that came in a foul-plagued 19 minutes. Banks knocked down 7-of-9 from the floor for his second straight 16-point game to start the season. FGCU shot 56 percent (33-59) from the field for the game, including a sizzling 59 percent (20-34) in the second half. The Eagles’ hot-shooting night was aided by 42 points in the paint and 20 assists on 33 field goals.

Game #3FGCU (2-1) - 74Grambling (0-4) - 70Nov. 20, 2010 at Hobdy Arena

GRAMBLING, La. - Senior REED BAKER sank seven free throws in the final minute, while junior TIM SNYDER (pictured) scored a season-high 21 points to help the FGCU men’s basketball team hold on for a 74-70 win at Grambling State Saturday evening at Hobdy Arena. The two-time defending Atlantic Sun free throw percentage leader, Baker sank 14-of-16 from the charity stripe on the night en route to his second straight 20-point game and the 11th of his career. Baker did a majority of his damage in the final 20 minutes, scoring 15 of his game-high 23 points while also adding eight rebounds. It was a good night for the FGCU post players, as well, led by Snyder’s 21 points that included 13 in the final frame. Snyder had his battles at the free throw line (5-14), but went 8-of-12 from the field, scoring in a variety of ways. Redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS celebrated his 21st

birthday with his sixth career double-double. Banks finished with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, highlighted by five on the offensive glass, despite battling foul trouble. Banks' 11th career five-plus offensive rebound game spearheaded a night in which the Eagles grabbed 17 offensive boards. The 17 offensive caroms and a 56 percent shooting clip (14-25) in the second half helped FGCU recover from a 26-of-46 effort at the free throw line and 21 turnovers. One game after scoring 53 points in the second half, FGCU poured in 49 in the final frame.

Game #4Arkansas (2-0) - 90FGCU (2-2) - 47Nov. 22, 2010 at Bud Walton Arena

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The FGCU men’s basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Arkansas club that used a 20-0 run in the opening five minutes of the game and 14 three-pointers to defeat the Eagles 90-47 on Monday night in front of 10,778 fans at Bud Walton Arena. Senior REED BAKER (pictured) led FGCU in scoring for the third straight game with a game-high 14 points, including 12 in the second half. Baker has finished in double figures in each of the first four games. The Razorbacks dominated inside and outside, as its top three interior players supplied 26 points and 27 rebounds in the absence of preseason All-SEC first team forward Marshawn Powell who sat out due to injury. Marvell Waithe led the Arkansas big men with 10 points and a game-high 13 boards. Seven different players helped Arkansas drill 14-of-30 shots from long range, as the Razorbacks shot 56 percent (35-63) for the game, including a staggering 64 percent (21-33) in the second half. Regarded as their premiere shooter in the nation by several media outlets, junior Rotnei Clark sank four three-pointers, including three during the team’s 20-0 run, en route to equaling Baker’s game-high 14 points. On the flip side, FGCU managed a measly 25 percent clip (15-59) from the floor and sank just 2-of-19 from three. The Eagles did reach double-digit offensive rebounds for the 31st time in their last 34 games, but lost the battle on the boards, 42-34.

Game #5Miami (4-2) - 87FGCU (2-3) - 75Nov. 27, 2010 at Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Despite a double-double from redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS (pictured) and another 20-point outing by senior REED BAKER, FGCU was unable to overcome a hot shooting performance from Miami en route to an 87-75 loss to the Hurricanes on Saturday night in front of 2,862 fans at Alico Arena. Miami sank 13 three-pointers and made 18-of-20 from the free throw line in the second half to improve to 4-2 on the season. The loss drops FGCU to 2-3 heading into the opening weekend of Atlantic Sun play when the Eagles travel north to Jacksonville for a pair of games. FGCU shot a solid 44 percent (26-59) from the field and made a season-high nine three-pointers (9-20), but was out-scored by 12 points from beyond the arc and 10 points at the free throw line. Miami finished 13-of-33 from long range and a scorching 24-of-27 at the line. The Eagles were able to stay within arm’s reach of Miami throughout the contest thanks to a season-best four players reaching double figures. Banks led all scorers with 21 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the year. Banks’ 11 boards were highlighted by nine on the offensive end, as the Eagles grabbed 15 for the game to finish with a 26-14 edge in points in the paint.

Game #6UNF (4-3, 1-0) - 81FGCU (2-4, 0-1) - 74Dec. 2, 2010 at UNF Arena

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Trailing by 20 points early the second half, the FGCU men’s basketball team rattled off a 21-4 run to climb within one possession down the stretch, but the UNF lead was too much to overcome as the Eagles fell to the Ospreys, 81-74, on the opening Thursday night of Atlantic Sun play at UNF Arena. Trailing 52-32 with its offensive struggling just four minutes into the second half, FGCU turned to preseason All-Conference forward ANTHONY BANKS (pictured), who rattled off the first eight points of a 13-0 run that brought the visitors back to life and trimmed the deficit to 52-45. After a UNF bucket broke the big run, FGCU closed to within three after a long range field goal from freshman Christophe Varidel, an old-fashioned three-point play by Banks and a pair of free throws from senior REED BAKER that made it a 56-53 game with 7:20 to play. UNF knocked down 5-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the win on the opening evening of conference play. The A-Sun’s second-best scoring duo entering the game, Baker and Banks combined for 37 points, including 23 over the second half push. Banks just missed recording his second straight 20-point game with 19 points and seven boards. Baker poured in 18 points, sinking 8-of-8 at the line to go along with six steals. FGCU’s season-best 28 points from the bench were boosted by Varidel’s career-best 16 points.

Game #7Jacksonville (6-1, 2-0) - 71FGCU (2-5, 0-2) - 56Dec. 4, 2010 at Veterans Memorial

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The FGCU men’s basketball team battled back from a slow start, but couldn’t hold on as Jacksonville used its athleticism and full court pressure to defeat the Eagles, 71-56, in an Atlantic Sun tilt Saturday afternoon at Veteran Memorial Arena. The Dolphins never let FGCU get into an offensive rhythm, limiting the Eagles to a 29 percent (17-59) shooting clip from the field while forcing the visitors into 20 turnovers. Redshirt sophomore ANTHONY BANKS (pictured) continued his strong play with 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the year. Despite the Blue and Green’s effort on the offensive glass, Jacksonville came away with a slight 46-42 edge on the boards. JU shot 42 percent (26-62) for the game and was also plagued by turnovers with 19. JU took control of the game right from the tip, taking an 18-2 lead by the 11:14 mark and forcing coach Dave Balza to call three 30-second timeouts along the way.
