Colorado caughtSafety tech overhaul coming for Holden Colorado as our exclusive photos reveal

SPY shots of Holden’s updated Colorado utility and Colorado 7 large SUV reveal the forthcoming facelifted versions should be equipped with vital driver assistance and safety equipment that would bring the workhorse models into line with rivals.

GoAuto has obtained images of the complete range of Colorado variants undergoing development trials. These include base cab-chassis through to top-spec Z71 dual cab, as well as the seven-seat Colorado 7 SUV, with all but the entry-level ute appearing to have new forward-facing camera technology installed.

If such technology makes it through to a production facelift model, the broader range has a chance of attaining

a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating that only the flagship dual cab and seven-seat versions currently offer.

The extra hardware can be clearly seen mounted at the top edge of the windscreen and, if it brings the capabilities of other manufacturers’ systems, the updated Colorado is likely to have adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assistance and critical autonomous city/pedestrian braking.

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) favours vehicles fitted with self-braking technology, and has highlighted the obvious safety benefits of vehicles that have been proving the systems in testing.

In addition to the extra tech, the development vehicles partially reveal the new look of the Colorado, including its LED headlights, aesthetics that align with the Chevrolet styling evolution and a refreshed grille that features the single bar with slots

have also been given a tweak with a dark smoked lens for the Colorado 7, although little else seems to have been altered at the rear.

The facelift would be the first major makeover for the current Colorado and Colorado 7, which were both launched in Australia in 2012.

Continued from previous pageAn updated version of the Colorado

has not yet been confirmed for Australia, and Holden product communications manager Mark Flintoft explained that the sighting of development vehicles does not necessarily herald the arrival of new Australian products.

“Holden regularly conducts engineering work in collaboration with other GM markets,” said Mr Flintoft. “These vehicles are part of a global testing trip, taking advantage of the warm weather and challenging Australian driving conditions.”

While car-makers routinely conduct cold-climate testing in the northern hemisphere at this time of the year, Australia’s hot climate enables engineering teams to continue their full range of extreme weather testing.

“Holden is committed to leveraging the GM portfolio to bring the best vehicles to Australia and ensure our

product range remains relevant and exciting, however we have nothing to announce at this time,” Mr Flintoft said.

However, he did not rule out a new Colorado for Australia and went on to explain that the company is always improving the safety features of global and Australian-market cars, including the forward-facing camera technology as revealed in the development vehicles.

“This is a technology that is present in GM vehicles across the world and facilitates features such as lane departure warning and forward collision alert,” he said.

“Safety is our first priority and something we’re always looking to improve.”

If a new Colorado is imminent, it will be one of the last to join a veritable one-tonne ute update frenzy that rolled out through 2015, with almost all key players in the light-commercial ute segment introducing new or updated models.

With a major improvement to safety and driver assistance kit, the Colorado will be given a significant boost in the increasingly popular market.

Despite its age, the Colorado continues to be a strong player in a market flooded with fresher faces. While Toyota careered ahead in 2015 with a whopping 35,161 sales of its HiLux, Ford’s Ranger managed second place with 29,185 and the Mitsubishi Triton found 25,338 homes. The Colorado still managed fourth place and 18,520 registrations.

Its sustained performance has been in part thanks to a steady succession of updates including the introduction of a limited-edition kit-boosted LS-X in October 2015, which followed the heavily tricked-out Z71 that arrived in June.

Holden in the wings asGM confirms two newconcepts for Delhi expo

Subcontinental drift

By RON HAMMERTONGENERAL Motors has confirmed two new Chevrolet concept vehicles will be revealed at the 2016 Delhi motor show in India on February 3, perhaps providing a stage for the latest collaboration between GM India and General Motors Australia Design.

As GoAuto has reported, the Holden-based studio is warming up to pull the wraps from its next vehicle for GM’s global network, apparently in the first half of this year.

Now GM has confirmed the biennial Auto Expo Delhi will host the debut of a pair of concepts, including a mini crossover vehicle that the Indian press has dubbed Beat Cross.

The Indian subsidiary of GM this week released a teaser image of the vehicle, showing the familiar Chevrolet face with twin grilles and LED daytime running lights and driving lights.

The other concept remains under wraps, with speculation in India that it could be a near-production version of the Adra small SUV concept that originally surfaced at the same show in 2014, or perhaps the next generation of the Spark-based Beat hatchback.

The Adra was designed in collaboration between GM’s studios in Melbourne and India, with the final

vehicle fabricated in Holden’s prototype workshop.

Holden designers have played a mentoring role to the fledgling Indian studio in Bangalore, and everything suggests that the collaboration is continuing, with one or perhaps both of the upcoming concepts at Delhi having Australian input.

Whatever the Delhi show holds, it appears to be important to GM, with a who’s who of senior executives reportedly set to catch the corporate jet to India for the event.

GM is known to be working on a new family of small vehicles for developing markets including India, China, Brazil and Mexico.

GM International Operations

president Stefan Jacoby announced last year that the new global vehicle family would have several body styles and would be built in India for the domestic market and for export to other developing markets.

Mr Jacoby promised that the vehicles would feature “striking styling that has never been seen here before”.

GM is spending $US1 billion ($A1.45b) in India to upgrade and consolidate its manufacturing at its Talegaon plant, near Mumbai, in Maharashtra state, in readiness for the new product splurge that it hopes will double its Indian market share by 2020.

Holden designers set tobe outed as part of teambehind all-new sportscar

Aussie hand in Opel GT

By RON HAMMERTONHOLDEN’S GM Australia Design is believed to have had a hand in the development of Opel’s new GT sportscar concept that will foreshadow the latest step in the new design philosophy for Opel and its sister brands Vauxhall, Holden and Buick.

To be fully revealed at the Geneva motor show in March, the GT has been teased in a brief video featuring Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann who promised to reveal more in a second instalment on January 21.

“Take a look at Opel with a new pair of eyes,” Mr Neumann says in the video, as the camera zooms into his left eye to reveal a “vibrant red wheel” that forms part of the GT’s design.

GoAuto understands that the GT is not the only imminent GM debutante in which Holden’s design team has had a role, with another expected to break cover in India early next month.

Although the Opel GT is said to be a design study, it is likely to turn up as a production car in the next few years, not only for Opel and Vauxhall but also

Holden and perhaps Buick. It would be the third Opel sporstcar to

carry the GT moniker, with the Kadett-based GT coupe in production from 1968 to 1974, and then the American-built, Pontiac Solstice-based GT convertible from 2007 to 2009.

The latter, manufactured in Delaware, was also shared as the Saturn Sky in the US and the Daewoo G2X in South Korea before it met its demise during the global financial crisis. This vehicle was never made in right-hand drive, so had no chance for Holden’s line-up in Australia.

The new version, however, might well be one of the 24 new models to be rolled out by Holden by the end of the decade, mostly likely sitting above the Astra-based Cascada.

GM’s British brand Vauxhall has issued a similar release about the GT, suggesting that it could very well be produced in right-hand drive.

At this stage, Holden is all quiet on the GT, with product communications

manager Mark Flintoft telling GoAuto that the company had nothing to add to the Opel disclosure.

He did point out, however, that the Melbourne-based GM Australia Design was well hooked into GM’s global design organisation, and thus working on a number of projects for GM partners around the world.

The previous two Opel GTs were front-engine, rear-wheel-drive designs, raising hopes that the newest edition will be a true high-performance rear-drive sportscar, perhaps based on the same lightweight rear-drive platform as the Holden-designed Buick Avenir large sedan concept shown at last year’s Detroit motor show and the Buick Avista sports coupe concept that made its debut last week in Detroit.

Both cars were awarded the Eyes On Design award for the best new design at the show.

New lightweight platformused for GMC’s large SUVcould turn up in Australia

All eyes on Acadia

By RON HAMMERTONGENERAL Motors has slashed more than 300kg from one of its large SUVs in North America, the GMC Acadia, with the adoption of a new lightweight platform that could provide some clues to a possible new Opel-built seven-seat family wagon for Holden.

Less truck and more car, the latest Acadia is still a big bus, at 4917mm long and 1916mm wide, but now light enough, at 1794kg, to employ a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine as its base powerplant.

Launched at last week’s Detroit motor show, the Acadia is believed to sit on GM’s new C1XX crossover vehicle architecture that also underpins the new Cadillac XT5 luxury SUV and, potentially, Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse.

American pundits believe C1XX is a variation of the front/all-wheel-drive E2XX mid-sized car platform – the replacement for the current Epsilon 2 medium car architecture – that forms the basis of the new Chevrolet Malibu and next-generation Opel/Holden Insignia.

This design employs a transverse-mounted engine and transmission,

high-strength steel monocoque body and independent suspension all-round.

There is no suggestion that the Acadia will be foisted onto export markets – GMC remains a largely North American brand – but GM chairman and CEO Mary Barra is on record as saying Opel will build a large SUV alongside Insignia in Germany by the end of the decade.

This “joint flagship” with Insignia will be made in right-hand drive for Britain, opening the door for a Holden version.

With Holden’s ever closer relationship with Opel and its British twin Vauxhall – not to mention Australia’s thirst for SUVs – logic suggests this product will make it to Australia under Holden badges soon after the European launch.

And if C1XX and E2XX are indeed closely related, it should be no problem to run a C1XX-based SUV down the same line as Insignia at the Russelsheim plant in Germany.

This same Opel vehicle is also likely to turn up in global markets as a Buick, as the American brand is also now

closely aligned with Opel/Vauxhall.Buick is thought to be working on a

new-generation Enclave SUV, replacing the current-generation model that is built on the Lambda platform.

It is unclear if the new Opel large SUV and next Enclave will be one and the same, but they almost certainly will be directly related under their skin.

In Australia, the Opel-built vehicle might well be expected to replace the outdated, Korean-built Captiva, which is the oldest vehicle in the Holden line-up.

This new SUV would go into battle against Ford’s Territory replacement – thought to be the Canadian-built Edge – and Toyota’s Kluger, among others.

Like Edge, GM’s new-generation Acadia largely dispenses with previous ‘Yank tank’ construction methods and employs a modern press-hardened, high-strength steel monocoque that permits thinner and lighter components without affecting body rigidity or crashworthiness.

The designers also took the opportunity to reduce the overall dimensions, cutting the overall length by 182mm.

A smaller, lighter vehicle meant engineers could substitute a smaller, lighter four-cylinder engine for the base variant.

FCA Australia ‘excited’ byprospect of 527kW V8 fortop Jeep as ute given nod

By RON HAMMERTONJEEP is preparing to shoehorn Chrysler’s most powerful Hellcat V8 engine into its Grand Cherokee large SUV to create a supercharged beast capable of blowing its European SUV rivals off the road.

The American off-road vehicle manufacturer also appears to have given the green light to its long-awaited ute based on its next-generation Wrangler.

Both vehicles were mentioned by Jeep CEO Mike Manley in discussions with journalists at last week’s Detroit motor show.

Although Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Australia has no official word on either product, it says it would welcome both with open arms.

Confirmation that Jeep is preparing a new high-performance Grand Cherokee above the current 344kW 6.4-litre SRT8 performance flagship came in a brief video interview with Mr Manley posted by an American blogger on YouTube.

Asked if Jeep could fit the supercharged 6.2-litre Hellfire V8 from the Dodge Charger and Chrysler Challenger into the Grand Cherokee, Mr Manley fired back that not only could it be done, but he had approved it for production.

Belting out 527kW of power and 881Nm of torque, the Hellfire Hemi blown V8 would give the Grand Cherokee the raw engine performance to surpass of all its rivals’ current mass-produced high-performance SUVs, including Mercedes-AMG’s 430kW/760Nm GLE63 S AMG, the 423kW/750Nm BMW X5 M, 419kW/800Nm Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and 405kW/680Nm Range Rover Sport SVR.

Although no name or timeline was mentioned by Mr Manley in the video interview, some American publications are betting on the badge Trackhawk – a play on Jeep’s Trailhawk trail-rated nameplate.

The current fourth-generation Grand Cherokee shares much of its architecture with the 2012 W166

Mercedes ML-Class and has been on the Australian market for five years.

A hi-po Hellfire engine version might be Jeep’s way of keeping the fire alight under the large wagon as it enters its twilight years.

FCA Australia corporate communications manager Andrew Chesterton told GoAuto last week that Jeep Grand Cherokee sales in Australia already had a high uptake of high-performance sales, with about 27 per cent of all sales going to the flagship SRT8.

“Needless to say, if such a vehicle was to come about, with more power, many of our buyers would appreciate it and we would be very excited to take it,” he said.

Honda Australia no closerto getting hold of a utilityas new Ridgeline emerges

No RHD for Honda ute

By TIM NICHOLSONHONDA Australia is no closer to having a pick-up in its line-up, with confirmation that the freshly revealed second-generation Ridgeline will remain a left-hand-drive-only proposition.

The all-new workhorse was unveiled at last week’s Detroit motor show and will replace the original version that went on sale in the United States in early 2005, soldiering on with a number of updates before Honda stopped production in mid-2014.

Speaking with GoAuto, Honda Australia public relations manager Melissa Cross confirmed that the new Ridgeline is solely for left-hand-drive markets and will not be making an appearance Down Under.

The car-maker’s Australian director Stephen Collins told GoAuto at last

year’s Tokyo motor show that Honda Australia was “always pushing” for right-hand-drive production of vehicles such as a pick-up and a large SUV, but added that it was unlikely in the medium term.

“It is very, very tough,” he said. “But I have got to say when there is an opportunity we will definitely put our hand up for it. The obvious issue is trying to get another right-hand-drive market where we can amortise the cost.

“So the short answer is we never give up but it is pretty difficult.

“There is nothing on the short-term or mid-term horizon that we could say we can get that out of the US and in right-hand drive and share the cost – but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stop trying.”

Developed by Honda R&D Americas and to be built at the Lincoln, Alabama plant, the new Ridgeline carries a more traditional-looking mid-size pick-up design than its predecessor, ditching the

high-walled cargo bed and featuring a more car-like front-end design.

Honda says the new cargo bed is 137mm wider and 102mm longer than the model it replaces and has the only four-foot-wide (1220mm) flat bed space in its class.

The tray features a dual-action tailgate hinged at the bottom and along the left side, a 400W AC power inverter and a unique external audio system that Honda says is a first for a pick-up.

The system uses six exciters – an audio signal processing technique – housed in the bed walls, rather than normal speakers, pumping out sound from the pick-up’s head unit.

A lockable ‘in-bed trunk’ provides a secure storage space, a fully flat floor and a drain plug for easier cleaning.

Striking show car shapesnew design direction forHonda’s US luxury brand

Precision instrument

By TIM NICHOLSONHONDA’S luxury arm Acura uncovered its edgy Precision concept at the Detroit motor show last week, previewing the brand’s future design direction.

According to Acura, the striking four-door concept points to a “bolder, more distinctive future for Acura vehicle design” and, depending on the response, could end up as a flagship production model for the American-focused Lexus and Infiniti rival.

Acura and Honda have previously shared some models, including the NSX supercar that will arrive in Australia later this year, as well as the Japanese-market Legend that is sold in the United

States as the Acura RLX. In 2014, Honda Australia elected not

to introduce the new Legend after poor sales of the fourth-generation version and slowing demand for large luxury cars.

Instead, the local subsidiary opted to launch a flagship Sport Hybrid variant of its Accord mid-sizer to fill the gap. In Japan, the Legend is only available in Sport Hybrid guise.

It remains to be seen if Acura and Honda will continue to share future models, but if they do, the new design aesthetic could surface on the next-generation Honda Legend.

The Precision concept was designed by the Acura Design Studio in California, and according to the car-maker was produced to express the Acura DNA of “precision crafted

performance”.Acura global creative director Dave

Marek highlighted the influence the Precision concept will have on future Acura product.

“The Acura Precision concept is more than simply a concept vehicle, it is a design study model that literally will shape the direction of all future Acura products around our Precision Crafted Performance DNA,” he said.

“The Acura Precision concept is the leading edge of a renewed commitment to delivering Precision Crafted Performance in every facet of the product experience and creating a powerful and very exciting direction for the next generation of Acura models.”

Exclusive VLF Automotive Force 1 takes 555kW fight to niche sportscars in US

By DANIEL GARDNERBOUTIQUE American brand VLF Automotive last week unveiled a potent new supercar at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, dubbed the Force 1, which shares the mighty 555kW/928Nm 8.4-litre V10 of the Dodge Viper.

Its sculptural and edgy bodywork was penned by former Fisker Automotive boss Henrik Fisker, who after selling off the assets of the Fisker Karma electric supercar last year to China’s Wanxiang has now re-emerged with his new company VLF Automotive, which appears to be focusing on sportscars with large-capacity internal-combustion engines.

Mr Fisker co-founded the company

with industry heavyweight and former General Motors vice-chairman Bob Lutz and manufacturing authority Gilbert Villarreal. The company title borrows the initial of each founding member’s surname.

The Force 1 doubles the VLF Automotive line-up, joining the 6.2-litre V8-powered Destino super-sedan that also debuted at the show, cementing the Danish designer’s new direction with the low-volume American car-builder.

With a $US300,000 pricetag ($A418,000) the Force 1 goes up against models such as the accomplished,

established and far cheaper Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Spyker C8, Aston Martin Vanquish and the Viper with which it shares its engine, but VLF says its latest creation delivers “the best performance in its price class”.

Its carbon-fibre construction has kept weight to about the 1500kg mark, allowing the Force 1 to accelerate to 60mph (96km/h) in 3.0 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 351km/h, but still provides a “luxurious contemporary interior for two people”.

Americans buy up cheap cars in record numbers, but how long can it last?

By RON HAMMERTONUNITED States light vehicle sales that soared to a record 17.4 million vehicles in 2015 are forecast to edge higher again in 2016 on the back of hefty manufacturer incentives, easy credit, low fuel prices and high consumer confidence.

But some US motor industry analysts are warning that the current car sales boom is showing cracks, with incentive spending by manufacturers reaching an average of 8.8 per cent of new car price or about $3000 a vehicle, and more than 40 per cent of new-car buyers taking out loans, many tempted by cheap interest rates.

The worry is that the flood of lease cars from five straight years of growing sales are due back on the market in the

next few years, putting strains on the new-vehicle market.

As well, some of the US’s major export markets are weakening, causing a logjam of some vehicles at factories.

US National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) chief economist Steven Szakaly said on the eve of the Detroit motor show last week that the US should enjoy its seventh successive year of automotive sales growth in 2016, with sales rising about 2.0 per cent, to 17.7 million units.

“We are living peak auto sales right now, and we will see one more year of that growth in 2016, but only because of rising incentives that will keep consumers coming into showrooms,” he said.

“The real worry now is whether we’re starting to pull sales ahead from future years.”

According to Autoblog, Kelley Blue Book estimates Chrysler and Volkswagen

poured money into incentives last year, with Chrysler reportedly forking out incentives equivalent to 14.5 per cent of new-car price, and VW not far behind, on 13.7 per cent.

This is said to be approaching the levels of the recession that followed 2008’s global financial crisis, and prompted by growing inventories due to a drop in exports to some markets.

In contrast to the blooming US, some South American markets have suffered a reversal.

Even in Australia, where the overall market grew 3.8 per cent last year, sales of American-sourced vehicles flatlined, with sales of Jeeps falling almost 20 per cent on 2014’s record 30,408 sales.

Global economic stability from a slowing of the Chinese economy and other factors could also rattle US consumer confidence.

New drop-top adds John Cooper Works treatment but local launch not firm

Works kit for Mini Cabrio

By DANIEL GARDNERMINI has thrown its John Cooper Works performance-honing kit at its recently revealed Cabriolet, bringing the same 170kW engine and sharpened chassis recipe found in the hard-top JCW that arrived last year.

The JCW Cabriolet is yet to be confirmed for Australian launch, but BMW Group Australia corporate communications general manager Lenore Fletcher told GoAuto the company would introduce the model if it were made available.

“Yes of course we would like to see it here,” she said. “Is it finalised? No it is not finalised.”

The standard Mini Cabriolet is due to arrive in Australia during the second

quarter of this year, but Ms Fletcher said that if the JCW version was to make it Down Under it would not be at the same time as its Cooper and Cooper S siblings.

“It will be later in the year, were it to arrive,” she said.

For the wind-in-the-hair JCW, Mini has duplicated the equipment from the hatchback, starting with its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit, which takes power and torque up from the 141kW/280Nm of the Cooper S to 170kW and 320Nm respectively.

With its extra output, the hottest convertible can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds when fitted with the standard six-speed manual gearbox, or 6.5s with the optional six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

It cannot keep up with the lighter

hatchback JCW, which gets to the 100km/h milestone in 6.1s or 6.3s with a manual gearbox, but it is 10 per cent more powerful than the previous Mini Convertible JCW, beating the superseded manual by three-tenths and the auto by an even wider 0.6s.

Despite having more power than any Mini before it, the new JCW Cabriolet is also one of the most efficient to date, using 6.5 litres of petrol per 100km on the combined cycle, or 5.9L/100km when equipped with the automatic shifter.

The JCW lets everyone know that it is producing more power than its siblings with a louder sports exhaust system, which Mini says is even easier to enjoy with the roof down.

New Competition Pack adds power, potency toM3 and M4 turbo twins

BMW boosts M3, M4

By DANIEL GARDNERBMW fans who missed out on the strictly limited M4 GTS are being offered a taste of the vicious tuned-up coupe with a new Competition Pack that brings sharpened dynamics and more power for the M4 coupe, convertible and M3 sedan.

The package will be available to European customers from the second quarter of 2016 and while the package has not yet been chalked for Australia, BMW’s history of offering the feistiest hardware in its portfolio makes it a likely candidate Down Under.

BMW Group Australia corporate communications general manager Lenore Fletcher told GoAuto the car-maker was keen to add the Competition Pack to the list of M4 and M3 options,

but there was “no confirmation as yet”.Pricing is also yet to be confirmed

in Europe, but with a significant dose of extra kit, upgraded versions will certainly carry a premium over less-exclusive M3 and M4 variants, which kick off in Australia at $139,900 plus on-road costs for the M3.

Headlining the Competition Package is a power boost, which takes the 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine up by 14kW to 331kW and cuts the 0-100km/h dash by 0.1 seconds across the board.

With the extra power, the M3 and M4 coupe get to 100km/h in 4.0 seconds, while the slightly heavier M4 convertible takes a little longer at 4.3s.

Despite the extra output, fuel consumption has actually fallen from 8.8 litres per 100km to 8.3L/100km in the case of M3 and M4 coupe, while the M4 convertible’s efficiency improves from 9.1L/100km to 8.7L/100km.

The power upgrade is complemented by a chassis revision that starts with a new set of forged wheels identical in design to the exclusive M4 GTS, but where the GTS wheels measure 19 inches at the front and 20-inch at the rear, the performance pack wheels are 20 inches all round and lack the orange embellishments.

Underneath, the Adaptive M Suspension has been fettled with three reconfigured Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes, while the springs, anti-roll bars and dampers have all been uprated along with a reprogram of the DSC and Active M Differential.

BMW has also modified the M sports exhaust for a “potent sound” and “added emotional resonance”, and differs from the standard equipment with black chrome tailpipe trims.

BMW’s i Vision Future Interaction showcasesinnovative technology

Tech-laden i8 Spyder

By DANIEL GARDNERBMW chose the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this month to debut a new i8 Concept Spyder that showcases a host of innovative technologies such as autonomous driving, gesture control and environmental information sharing.

The protractedly named Concept Car BMW i Vision Future Interaction is based on the i8 Spyder that was recently confirmed for production, but goes further by removing the doors as well as the roof.

In addition to the more obvious aesthetic changes, the show car hides a variety of new comfort and driver assistance features starting with an interior rethink, which brings an elongated 12-inch dash-mounted screen,

twin-spoke steering wheel and organic seats with Siamese base cushions.

The new larger monitor relays information to both occupants from the extensive range of electronic systems fitted to the concept.

An autostereoscopic instrument cluster allows the driver to see the most important vehicle information in three dimensions and is complemented by a head-up display.

Like the production version already available in the BMW 7 Series, the concept also has the option to control

on-board functions without touching the various screens or panels, with the AirTouch gesture control system.

A series of hand motions are detected by cabin sensors to negotiate the large screen menus that appear as a layout of tiles rather than a more conventional list. Touch sensors hidden under the leather of the centre console, which connects the two seats, can also be used to select options.

VW’s new Transporter van and MPV range offers better safety, economy, value

T6 raises the bar

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISVOLKSWAGEN has reskinned its long-lived Transporter range, bringing lower prices, an improved and more car-like cabin, new advanced driver safety technology and additional variants into the fold.

For now, the all-diesel-powered T6 starts from $36,990 plus on-road costs for the TDI340 SWB (short wheelbase) manual, which is $1700 less than its immediate predecessor, and extends to $49,090 for the TDI400 LWB (long wheelbase) with a dual-clutch DSG auto and 4Motion all-wheel drive.

An entry-level TDI250 Runner will surface early this year, with the yet-to-be-confirmed pricing expected to match the previous version’s $31,990 driveaway mark.

On the people-mover front, the seven-seater Multivan TDI340 SWB DSG and nine-seater Caravelle TDI340 LWB DSG kick off from $49,990 apiece – the latter listed at $700 less than the outgoing version – and top out at a cool $80,490 in

salubrious new LWB Executive TDI450 DSG guise, which is a luxury tilt at the hire-car and hotel-run markets.

About 80 of the Generation Six launch editions at $74,990 have also landed, brandishing special two-tone paint, Alcantara trim, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, power sliding doors, adaptive cruise control and more.

As far as facelifts go, the T6’s is subtle, but the headlights, grille and bumpers are different, as are the tailgate sheetmetal and tail-lights. Essentially the T6 is a heavily modified version of the T5 series launched a dozen years ago and revamped in 2010.

Volkswagen says it has the largest

number of body styles and variants in the Transporter’s class, with 14 two-seater vans in regular, medium and high-roof configurations, four cab-chassis models (one single-cab three-seater and three double-cab six-seaters), two Crewvan five-seater wagons, six seven-seater Multivans (six-seater Executive flagship excepted) and a single nine-seater Caravelle bus.

Some of the more powerful models also offer a Haldex Gen-V 4Motion all-wheel-drive system in lieu of the regular front-wheel drive.

The T6’s wheelbases are identical to the preceding version (SWB: 3000mm, LWB: 3400mm), with their corresponding lengths being 4890mm and 5304mm respectively. Customisation is key, with the various shapes and sizes meaning there is between 5.8 and 9.3 square metres of cargo space in the Transporter High Roof LWB. The Multivan sits 20mm lower to the ground than the van.

T6 raises the barContinued from previous page

As with the previous model, all Australian-spec versions employ variations of the 2.0-litre common-rail direct-injection four-cylinder turbo-diesel unit. Automatic engine idle-stop is now standard across the range, resulting in fuel consumption cuts of up to half a litre per 100km.

The TDI340 produces 103kW of power at 3500rpm and 340Nm of torque from 1750-2500rpm. The TDI400 ups that to 132kW at 4000rpm and 400Nm from 1500-2000rpm, while the Multivan’s headline TDI450 BiTurbo with low- and high-pressure turbos delivers 150kW at 4000rpm and 450Nm from just 1400-2400rpm.

Transmission choices are as before – six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch DSG with Sport mode and Tiptronic function. The combined average fuel figures vary between 6.5L/100km (TDI450) to 7.7L/100km (TDI340) in vans, and 7.2-8.2L/100km in the cab-chassis.

The forthcoming TDI250 Runner Van is expected to pump out about 75kW and 250Nm.

Like before, the front end features MacPherson struts and coil springs

while the rear uses semi-trailing arms with coils and an anti-roll bar. The steering system is hydraulically powered rack-and-pinion, with an 11.9m turning circle in the SWB van and 13.2m in the LWB. Brakes are 308mm discs up front (TDI400/450: 340mm) and 294mm in the rear.

Van payloads vary between 1014kg and 1236kg (low roof), and 1172-1281kg for the cab-chassis, with the latter’s 202mm ground clearance some 20mm shy of the vans.

The big news inside is the redesigned dashboard, bringing with it Volkswagen’s latest multimedia touchscreen (in two sizes) with apps connectivity, allowing a reversing camera to be offered.

Furthermore, there is an improved layout and better storage solutions. In the people-mover versions, a more car-like presentation and finish is offered in right-hand drive for the first time, greatly boosting the appeal of the Comfortline and Executive.

On the safety front, Multi-Collision Brake (which prevents additional impacts after an accident), Fatigue Detection (with a cup of coffee icon warning in the instrumentation) and four airbags are standard, while an optional Driver Assist package brings blind-spot monitoring, automatic headlights/wipers, foglights with cornering capability and power-folding mirrors, among other items.

Autonomous emergency braking (known as City EB in VW-speak) is only available on the Highline.

Every model comes with a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, a driver’s seat height and lumbar adjuster, Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming, touchscreen multimedia, air-conditioning, remote central locking, power windows and cruise control, while a rubber floor surface is included in the Crewvan.

No TDI for now as VW’s redesigned Caddy launches in Australia, from $28,190

Petrol position

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISPETROL-ONLY versions of the new Volkswagen Caddy have been launched in Australia ahead of the diesels that, although currently unavailable due to the company’s global emissions cheating scandal, are still slated for a second-quarter release.

Kicking off from $28,190 plus on-road costs for the long-wheelbase Maxi Van TSI220 manual, the redesigned range of Polish-built commercial vehicles and people-mover variants promises significant improvements to performance, economy, efficiency, refinement, practicality, safety and comfort.

Central to all that is a new 92kW/220Nm 1.4-litre direct-injection four-cylinder turbo engine as per the Golf, bringing with it a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission option in lieu of a standard six-speed manual – the first time buyers can specify a petrol auto in the series.

Previously diesel only, the Caddy gets DSG petrol primarily to do battle with the increasingly popular Renault Kangoo in 78kW 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-speed auto format, although the VW compact van starts at $28,990 plus on-roads for the short-wheelbase TSI220 DSG – $5500 more than the French van.

A 62kW/160Nm 1.2-litre four-cylinder TSI160 Caddy Runner manual will arrive early this year as the new

entry-level van, offered in a single-spec manual for about the same price as the outgoing version that retailed for $22,990 driveaway.

No auto will be made available in this configuration. It will also be followed by 75kW 1.6-litre and (circa) 110kW 2.0-litre TDI turbo-diesel models – traditionally the best sellers with well over 80 per cent of all volume – completing the MY16 Caddy rollout.

More information about these will be divulged soon.

Nevertheless, Volkswagen has high hopes for the 1.4 TSI, since it offers sizeable efficiency upgrades, even compared to the old 1.2 TSI manual, as well as cheaper pricing than the TDI DSGs. It averages 6.0 litres per 100km (manual: 6.2), representing an 11 per cent decrease in fuel consumption, while its 92kW/220Nm output marks a 20 and 26 per cent increase in power and torque respectively.

Petrol positionContinued from page 18

The new larger petrol drivetrain with DSG availability reflects the Caddy’s adoption of Volkswagen Group’s up-to-date MQB modular transverse platform drivetrain technology, though this new C4 generation is really only a heavily modified version of the Mk3 2KN-series van that surfaced in 2004.

Consequently, it gains a raft of upgrades, including automatic engine idle-stop (under the Bluemotion badge), Multi Collision Braking (that applies post-impact braking to mitigate further damage), Fatigue Detection (a coffee cup icon in the instrumentation) and – on the Caddy people-movers – second-row curtain airbags.

Additionally, driver-assist devices such as autonomous braking (known as City EB) are available, as are adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.

Everything else is as per the previous Caddy, meaning two wheelbase dimensions (2682mm and 3006mm Maxi), the latter resulting in a 47mm-longer body for a one-cubic-metre boost in cargo space.

With 1779mm in overall length, the SWB’s business end is rated at 3200 litres, 1000 litres under the Maxi, which

offers 2249mm to play with. The standard van has a single sliding side door (double on Maxi), while barn or tailgate openings are the choices out back.

There is also a Maxi Crewvan with five seats and a configurable capacity of between 3950 and 4130 litres. For the first time, the Crewvan’s side door windows can slide open.

Moving on to the Caddy people-movers, with five seats there is 730 litres of cargo space available, 200 litres more than in the seven-seater Maxi version.

Where applicable, all rear seats can be removed to raise capacity to 3030 litres (Maxi: 3880L), while creating a level floor area of 1781mm (Maxi: 2250mm). Payloads start at 750kg, and can reach 850kg-plus, depending on the model.

The front-drive platform employs the old Golf V’s beefed-up MacPherson strut front end, while a leaf-spring set-

up on all variants brings strength as well as a flat rear floor section.

Stylistically, the Caddy looks similar to its MY11-15 2KN predecessor, with most body panels shared, save for the redesigned headlights, grille, bumpers, tail-lights and lift-up tailgate sheetmetal.

The people-mover versions also gain smaller mirrors, instead of the obviously van-like items that continue in the commercial variants. There is far greater differentiation inside too, with what VW calls a “more closed look” to the now more angular dashboard.

A redesigned and more car-like fascia in all models steps up with fresh instrumentation, the belated inclusion of a glovebox as part of an improved storage set-up, and more contemporary trim.

No Peugeot vans comingbut Sime is studying casefor extra Citroen models

Citroen van expansion

By DANIEL GARDNERPSA Peugeot Citroen’s local distributor Sime Darby Motors is considering the introduction of larger light-commercial vehicle offerings to sit above the Berlingo, despite dropping the Peugeot-branded vans last year.

While Peugeot has not “walked away” from the segment, it is more likely the Citroen side of the sister brands will expand its commercial range, following the positive reception for the latest Berlingo small van.

Speaking to GoAuto at a Peugeot and Citroen drive day late last month, Sime Darby Motors Group PR and communications manager Tyson Bowen explained that there was scope for commercial vehicles larger than the current single offering, such as the Citroen Dispatch and Relay vans sold in overseas markets such as the UK.

“There’s options above and below Berlingo out of Europe and some of them just won’t work here,” he said. “Jumpy is the smaller one below the Berlingo in Europe. There was consideration but that style of van here doesn’t really resonate.

Whereas above I think there’s room for us to look at that.”

Peugeot has previously offered the Partner small van and larger Expert, but the pair were pulled after failing to attract a strong audience. Mr Bowen explained the company’s strategy was to redefine Peugeot as a more passenger-focused brand, while Citroen would continue to carry the commercial coat of arms.

“The reason we stopped selling the Peugeot light commercials earlier (last) year was because of the strength of the two brands and what the market thinks,” he said.

“When they think of Peugeot, not many think of commercials at the moment (but with) Citroen they do – and you play to your strengths.”

While Citroen is the clear favourite for large van additions, Mr Bowen said both marques needed careful consideration before any new vehicle could be finalised

for the Australian market.“Even on the Peugeot side,” he said.

“For both brands we’ve got to look at it all. They have separate teams but they are all being driven by the same thoughts – customer support and competitiveness. If we get those things right, then there is potential.”

Mr Bowen went on to explain that adding a new model to the local line-up was not as simple as it could be with passenger models, and the size, weight and specialised nature of commercial vehicles caused other challenges that needed to be worked through.

“Bigger vans need infrastructure and investment. You’ve got to look at how you can roll those things out without putting undue strain on the dealer network and start selling car that we can’t support,” he said.

French brand boosts LCVstable with 12-seater busversion of LWB FWD van

Master bus for Renault

By ROBBIE WALLISRENAULT Australia has introduced a modified bus version of the Master, the French car-maker’s largest light-commercial van.

The Master Bus is priced from $59,990 plus on-road costs and has swapped out cargo space for seating for up to 12 people.

Renault’s latest addition will compete against the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Bus, LDV V80 Bus and the segment-leading Toyota HiAce Bus.

Based on the L3H2 long-wheelbase Master van, it uses the same 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine teamed with a six-speed automated manual transmission.

Driving the front wheels, the diesel engine is compliant with Euro 5 emissions regulations and produces 110kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

The Master van comes with a 1252kg payload, 2500kg towing capacity and is rated to carry 200kg on its roof.

The new bus version comes with a rated 3.9-tonne gross vehicle mass (GVM), and 1880mm of headroom, which Renault says is enough for an average-sized Australian male to stand fully upright without his head touching the ceiling.

The passenger seats are accessed through a left-side sliding door, and on the rear are two barn doors that use a 270-degree opening function that allows the doors to fold back against the body sides to help loading.

Three seats in the front are teamed with nine in the back, consisting of two seats in the second row, three in the third (divided by a centre aisle) and four across the back.

Behind the last row of seats is a luggage area with 3500 litres of space.

Each seat is fitted with seatbelts, while two seats are fitted with Isofix connections and child seat top tether straps.

Other features include a glazed emergency hatch in the roof, reclining seatbacks for the two middle rows, hard-wearing vinyl flooring, original equipment-quality interior trim mouldings, durable and soft two-tone grey jacquard fabric seat facings that match the front seats, and an auto side step below the sliding door that slides out when the door opens.

A passenger compartment air-conditioning unit is also provided, in addition to the front-mounted unit.

The bus will be offered with two option packs: a $3590 Premium Pack and $7990 Luxury Pack.

US authorities rejectVW emissions plan

By DANIEL GARDNERVOLKSWAGEN’S proposed solution to the unfolding diesel emissions scandal in the United States has been rejected by the Californian Air Resources Board (CARB).

In November last year, the German car giant submitted details of how it planned to reverse the emissions test cheat device that was fitted to thousands of 2.0-litre diesel engines in the US, but after reviewing the plan the Californian authorities are not satisfied that it goes far enough.

According to the official letter of rejection, Volkswagen’s submitted recall strategy fails to include all information as laid out in a previous demand from CARB and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with gaps in almost all required fields.

While Volkswagen had touched on the necessary areas in its proposal, CARB says the plan lacked detail and contains gaps, proposed repairs do not have enough detail to evaluate for feasibility, and their effect on performance and durability is not adequately outlined.

The letter also claims the VW emission recall plan would fail to correct the problem “in an expeditious manner”, and as such, an official notice of violation (NOV) accompanies the letter of rejection, identifying 75,688 vehicles that do not conform to Californian law.

Renault raid

Fraud investigators raid offices over VW-style issueBy TIM NICHOLSON

FRENCH fraud investigators last week raided three of Renault’s main sites, including its Paris headquarters, in a bid to determine whether there are anomalies with the car-maker’s emissions reporting.

It follows the ‘dieselgate’ scandal that has engulfed the Volkswagen Group since late September when it was discovered that some of the German auto giant’s models across a number of its brands had been fitted with a device that cheats emissions testing.

Renault Group’s shares fell by as much as 23 per cent late last week after French union officials confirmed that the sites had been searched, reportedly wiping €5.8 billion ($A9b) from its market value.

About 25 Renault models are being independently tested by the French Homologation Authority to determine whether they have been fitted with a so-called cheat device that results in lower emissions when under test.

This is part of a wider test sample of a number of car-makers, including PSA Peugeot Citroen.

Renault said in a statement that as of the end of December 2015, four of its vehicles had been tested, and no defeat device had been discovered.

The statement explained that the French Agency for Energy and Climate,

which is the main contact for the testing commission, “already considers that the ongoing procedure would not reveal the presence of a defeat device on Renault’s vehicles”.

The car-maker described the testing as “good news for Renault” and said it was part of its corporate plan to further reduce emissions.

“The ongoing tests open the way for improvement solutions for future and current Renault vehicles, presented in its Renault Emissions Plan which is aimed at improving the energy performance of our vehicles,” the company said.

Last month Renault released a statement reaffirming its commitment to reducing emissions and announcing an additional €50 million investment into developing systems to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

In last week’s statement, Renault confirmed that the General Directorate for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control – similar to the ACCC – had visited the car-maker’s corporate headquarters in Boulogne-Billancourt, as well as the Renault Technical Centre in Lardy and the Technocentre in Guyancourt as part of its investigations.

FCA Australia cuts up to$2500 from Jeep’s babySUV, now from $28,000

Jeep Renegade price cuts

By DANIEL GARDNERJEEP has reduced prices across the range of its new Renegade SUV, cutting between $1500 and $2500 in a move made less than three months since the model’s launch here.

The American car-maker raised eyebrows with the pricing of the new compact soft-roader when it launched in October, with its $29,500 entry level much higher than a number of perceived rivals.

Early adopters of the smallest seven-slot model need not feel penalised, though, as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Australia has pledged to make up the difference with all existing customers with a cash-back card to the value of the price reductions.

At the opening price point, the 1.6-litre manual Etorq Renegade Sport now starts from $28,000 – $1500 lower than before – however the company says further savings are on offer with a $29,000 driveaway price.

Moving up to the 1.4-litre MultiAir Sport brings a six-speed automatic transmission and a turbocharged engine for $31,000 plus on-road costs ($32,000

driveaway), marking another $1500 price cut.

The single Longitude variant is not offered as a driveaway deal but with a new price of $33,000, the 2016 forecourt price similarly represents a

$1500 reduction over the 2015 fee.Above that is the Renegade Limited,

which shares the 1.4-litre MultiAir four-cylinder petrol and six-speed auto, but adds more equipment for a new price of $36,000, which is a significant $2500 less than the previous figure.

At the top of the pack is the Renegade

Trailhawk which brings a nine-speed auto, a host of toughened off-road equipment and bags of Jeep styling tweaks, as well as the beefiest engine of the line-up – the 2.4-litre MultiAir 2 Tigershark petrol.

It, too, has received a $1500 price cut, now starting from $40,000.

VFACTS figures show the Renegade managed only 51 sales in its first full sales month (November) and 87 in December.

By comparison, in its first full month, Mazda sold 1396 CX-3s, while Honda found homes for 1081 HR-Vs. In December, the CX-3 finished off the year with more than 1200 sales for the month, while the HR-V added 837 new registrations.

Auto-maker presence atCES highlights increasingemphasis on technology

By DANIEL GARDNERWITH modern cars relying more than ever on complex electronics to remain safe, efficient and fun, the world’s mainstream automotive brands are increasingly turning to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to show off their latest hardware and software.

Hosted each year in Las Vegas, the CES is the world’s largest tech show, sprawling over three main locations across the city with the 2016 show experiencing the greatest automotive brand presence since it started in 1967.

Alongside the high-definition internet televisions, robots and smartwatches, more than 10 of the world’s most recognisable car brands had something to show off, from autonomous driving technology to an increasing focus on what some are calling “the internet of things”.

Audi revealed an evolution of its Virtual Cockpit high-resolution screen technology which is now curved, larger and has spread to the centre console, moving all climate and comfort controls

to a large touchscreen in addition to the all-LED instrument cluster.

The German car-maker also showcased an innovation that takes the same LED screen technology outside the car and into a set of tail-lights that can modulate in brightness and colour far more flexibly than regular LED diodes.

Even moving images are made possible with what is effectively a screen in place of regular tail-light clusters, and for the show Audi had arranged a mesmerising flame pattern displayed in the shape of the boot lights.

As well as its i Vision Future Interaction project (see page 13), BMW brought a second i8-based concept which explores the possibility of a mirrorless car, replacing the conventional door and rearview mirrors of its hybrid sportscar with miniature cameras. The images are consolidated into one image, which is displayed where the regular reflected rearward image would normally be seen.

Mercedes-Benz made an appearance with a pop-up version of its Mercedes Me store, one of which will be coming to Melbourne next year, as well as a sneak preview of the information

and communication system that will keep occupants of the next E-Class entertained.

As previously reported, VW showed up with an autonomous electric van called the Budd-e, and it also rolled out its e-Golf Touch which previews a new large 9.2-inch touchscreen control system that will be finding its way into compact VWs in the near future.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced the fourth generation of its Uconnect infotainment system, reporting better performance and smartphone compatibility that will roll out in new models this year. The car giant demonstrated the improved version of its system in a 2016 Dodge Challenger Pursuit police car.

While not attending as a standalone brand, exclusive British marques Bentley and McLaren still managed a presence at the show. Bentley teamed up with in-car-audio authority Monster to produce a Continental GT V8-based “Monster by Mulliner” showcar that is as pleasing on the ear as it is on the eye.

Toyota accelerates workon connected car tech

By DANIEL GARDNERTOYOTA used the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this month to present a significant innovation in autonomous driving technology – a new map-generation system that captures information from a vehicle’s surroundings.

Cars equipped with cameras and sensor banks store images and information as they negotiate all driving environments, and send the data back to a command centre where it is collated and used to generate an up-to-the-minute map.

That fresh information can then be redistributed to other vehicles for a more reliable reference. The system is beneficial to more conventional GPS and navigation equipment, but is of particular importance to autonomous vehicles, which are more dependent on the latest information.

Using regular cars to gather information is far more efficient and faster than previous methods such as Google’s street-view cars, which use more specialised equipment to gain information as they travel around the world’s roads.

While Toyota’s approach uses more basic equipment and has a higher risk of errors, a far greater number of vehicles will return more information, allowing multiple references and data cross-checking and the correction of mistakes in the collation process.

Blue Oval details its latest connected tech projectsAutonomous Fusion at Mcity

By TUNG NGUYENFORD is preparing to triple its fleet of autonomous-drive prototype vehicles based on the Fusion (Mondeo) Hybrid, taking the total up to around 30 as it ramps up its activities in the fast-growing area.

Detailing its latest connected technology projects at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this month, Ford also said it was deeply involved in developing vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, nurturing a partnership with mobile communication service providers.

It also said it was head-hunting a new generation of “innovators”.

The fleet of about 20 new autonomous vehicles will be fitted with lidar (laser radar) sensors, which scan the environment up to 200 metres ahead, and feature a lightweight and slimmer design, cutting the number of required

sensors per vehicle from four to two.Ford technical leader for autonomous

vehicles Jim McBride said the increase in size of Ford’s autonomous vehicle fleet will result in more comprehensive testing and faster development times.

“Adding the latest generation of computers and sensors ... helps bring Ford ever closer to having a fully autonomous vehicle ready for production,” he said.

Ford has been testing autonomous vehicle technologies since 2005 and was the first major manufacturer to test its vehicles at the University of Michigan’s Mcity autonomous driving park, which opened in July last year.

Ford is also focusing its efforts on the burgeoning vehicle communication technology, announcing a new vehicle-to-home connection that will utilise a system called Ford Sync Connect.

The system will allow users to remotely lock and unlock a car from anywhere, locate their car via GPS, remotely start the vehicle, and view information including fuel levels and tyre pressure from their smartphone.

Dealer group joins in withnew car-rental concept forride-share drivers, couriers

AHG’s ‘Splendid’ move

By NEIL DOWLINGAND JOHN MELLOR

PremiumGoAutoNews

AUSTRALIA’S biggest dealer group, AHG, is partnering with an innovative new car-rental concept for small-business operators which plans to have “thousands” of its cars on Australian roads by the end of this year.

The company, called Splend (a play on splendid and lend), already has more than 300 vehicles with clients in the mainland states and is expanding daily.

One of its partners is the ride-share business Uber.

The business model is built around providing vehicles for people who want to become part of the online companies that are recruiting drivers for car sharing such as Uber.

But it is also for drivers attracted to new online services that are getting into having people use their private cars for courier services with online ordering and tracking along the lines of Uber as well as services running errands for customers booking online like Sherpa and Zoom2u.

The company, which started last year,

provides a range of cars for a fixed weekly fee to approved buyers with a good credit record. The fee starts at around $275 a week and renters can use the car for work or leisure. This covers the vehicle purchase as well as scheduled maintenance, registration and all insurances.

There is an upfront fee of $275 to cover administration. Drivers pay for fuel and tolls.

There is a limit of 1000km a week (52,000km a year) after which additional fees apply. The car can be handed back at any time and the arrangement ceases without penalty. Fees apply for vehicles that require reconditioning to bring them back to prime condition.

Splend’s website suggests that drivers can clear $1000 a week working 40 hours.

Splend’s principal, Sydney-based

Chris King, told GoAutoNews Premium that AHG will sell, service and maintain the fleet in each state. He said the AHG link “is a very good option for us”.

As part of its growth, Uber will soon base 25 Nissan Leaf electric vehicles in Canberra through Mr King’s car-rental business.

Splend terms itself a vehicle solution provider for small businesses and is particularly suitable for sole traders operating Uber or similar ride-share or delivery application businesses.

It is the new-age glove to Uber’s grip on Australia’s taxi-alternative, ride-share market but is not limited to moving people.

“We don’t compete with car-rental companies because we don’t have short-term rents,” Mr King said from his Sydney offices.

“And we’re not an alternative to most leasing arrangements because we don’t arrange novated leases and we are involved in the training of drivers.”

But Mr King said the rental rates were cheaper than leasing or hire-car businesses.

Splend, financed by a group of four private businesses, buys its vehicles and arranges all the maintenance, insurance and driver assistance.

Splend has a similar structure to breeze.com in the US that exclusively uses Toyota Prius cars, although the business model is different. It is also compatible with new apps for Australian parcel delivery companies such as Sherpa and Zoom2u, creating an additional income for customers.

Proposed changes set outto prune factory controlsover car dealers in China

China dealers’ big win

Continued from previous pageMr King said the concept gets

prospective ride-share business owners into cars immediately and does not lock them into a contract.

“It’s a fully maintained operation and there’s no contract – the cars can be rented and returned any time after four weeks and we only need two weeks’ notice to end the arrangement,” he said.

“We have staff that provide assistance to the customer and this includes training and ongoing support for the customer to ensure they succeed.

“The training and support is included in the rental price. For us it means we are helping a small-business owner

improve his or her business and that is good for everyone.

“Customer service is very important to Uber. We also ensure the customer is a safe driver by fitting a device that measures acceleration, braking, speed and cornering. It’s there so we can help them become better drivers.”

Splend has an incentive program that gives a Tesla sedan for a month to customers who show the best improvement.

Cars are purchased by Splend and are generally priced from $35,000 to $45,000.

“We could have bought a fleet of cheap cars,” Mr King said.

“But this is a full-time job for

customers and it is important that the cars are new, have a quality look and are reliable and fuel efficient. So we chose the more expensive cars.”

Splend’s fleet comes from Hyundai, Nissan and Mitsubishi. Mr King said the current models include the Hyundai i40 diesel, Nissan X-Trail diesel and Mitsubishi Outlander petrol.

“All the cars are low-emission vehicles and we have 100 per cent offsets through GreenFleet,” he said.

“We are also putting 25 Nissan Leaf electric vehicles into Canberra. The Leaf has a range of about 160km and Canberra suits an EV because it has a lot of charging stations and it’s small compared to other cities.”

IT HAS taken the communist government of China to achieve for that country’s dealers something about which dealers in capitalist countries can only dream.

A position paper by the Chinese Government proposes changes to the fraught relationship between car-makers and dealers that take huge power away from car-makers and puts dealers firmly back in charge of their businesses.

A wide-ranging discussion paper from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, which oversees the sales of cars within China, proposes the removal of controls on car dealers by the factories, controls that are the bane of dealers in the west.

These include: canning the setting of sales targets on dealers; banning car-makers from forcing dealers to take on unpopular models; banning car-makers from forcing dealers to take on excess inventory; extending dealer agreements from one year to three or five years;

and banning the enforced selling of insurance to car buyers.

One key rule change is that dealers will be able to sell new cars of any brand without the permission of the car-maker and they will be able to source the cars and spare parts from other dealers.

This will allow the smaller domestic brands to sell their cars through the larger established dealer networks selling more popular brands rather than having to build their own independent networks.

The effect of the changes will weaken the control car-makers have over their dealers. Car-makers will no longer have the power to decide who sells their vehicles and the price at which they can

sell them. Dealers will be able to bypass car-makers and sell cars of all brands to each other.

China-based industry analyst Yu Jianliang told the Financial Times: “This is really good news for car dealers and will reduce their business risk.”

Li Yanwei, an analyst at the China Automobile Dealers Association, which represents 22,000 car dealers, told the Wall Street Journal that the proposal was a “breakthrough” that would shatter the monopoly that car-makers held over the selling of cars in China.

Mr Li told the WSJ: “At present wholesales prices are usually higher than retail prices and the losses are mostly undertaken by dealers.”

‘In the poo’

Bird poo damages new ’Stangs, forcing prep rethinkBy RON HAMMERTON

THE bane of car owners everywhere – bird poo – has forced Ford Australia to rethink its new-car import preparation procedures after two new Mustangs were dive-bombed and damaged by feathered fiends at Melbourne’s Webb Dock after being unloaded from a ship bringing them from the United States.

The pony car paint was damaged by the droppings after protective plastic wrappings had been removed to comply with Australia’s quarantine laws.

The issue came to light when an anonymous person called a Melbourne radio station to say that dealers were having to repair the paintwork.

The incident was confirmed by Ford brand communications manager Neil

McDonald who said only two cars had been damaged. He explained that the protective “wrap guard” on the horizontal surfaces of the cars had been removed from the shipment of Mustangs as part of the bio-decontamination process to ensure no unwanted seeds or other nasties enter the country.

“Two cars then suffered bird dropping damage while they were on the docks after the wrapping came off,” he said. “As a result we’re looking at the process to better understand how this can be avoided.”

By TIM NICHOLSONTOYOTA Australia says that with a strengthening line-up and more fresh models on the way, it can maintain its current annual sales level of more than 200,000 units beyond the closure of its local manufacturing operations in late 2017.

Official VFACTS figures show the Japanese car-making giant topped the Australian sales charts for the 13th consecutive year in 2015, with its haul of 206,236 passenger cars, SUVs and light-commercial vehicles marking the 11th time it has exceeded 200,000 sales.

And Toyota Australia executive director of sales and marketing Tony Cramb is confident the company can maintain its current sales volumes into the future.

“When we look at our forward forecast we don’t imagine going under 200,000, and while the market is as strong as it is now, we can’t imagine dropping down below 200,000,” he said.

Toyota’s 2015 market share of 17.8 per cent was the only to make double digits. Its sales volume was more than 92,000 units ahead of second-placed Mazda, which finished with a 9.9 per cent share.

Toyota was the top-selling brand in

every state and territory, the market leader in SUV, passenger car and LCV sales, and with a vehicle at the top of the table in nine market segments: small cars, medium cars, sportscars, large SUVs, upper-large SUVs, 4x2 and 4x4 utilities, light buses and vans. It also came within 54 units of first place in the light segment.

The last time Toyota dipped below 200,000 sales was in 2011 when the company shifted 181,624 units, a 15.4 per cent dip over its 2010 result due in part to stock shortages caused by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

In the past 10 years, Toyota’s overall market share has dipped from 20.5 per cent in 2005 to 17.8 per cent in 2015, but Mr Cramb said he was not concerned about the downward trend, and identified shifting consumer preferences and solid competition as key reasons for the lower share.

“I don’t see it as a problem,” he said.

“I think it is wonderful in a number of different ways. Firstly, for the customer in Australia to have such choice is fantastic for them. It shows that we have seriously good competition in many segments and it also shows that the market itself is changing by its very nature.

“There are segments like small SUV where we don’t even have an entrant. That is a big segment now. It didn’t even exist when we had 20-plus (per cent) share. The market itself is changing, moving away from traditional big six (cylinder) family cars. It’s moving into small cars and SUVs.

“Small cars we are doing great, pick-ups we’re doing great, SUVs we’re doing great. But there are segments of that market that are growing that we are not even represented in which we need to deal with.”

By DANIEL GARDNERHYUNDAI has confirmed that its forthcoming three-model electrified Ioniq hatchback range will kick off globally with the conventional hybrid version, which is due to arrive in Australia in the second half of the year.

The South Korean car-maker has been slowly releasing details of the all-new eco-car range since the Ioniq name was confirmed late last year, but it has now released more comprehensive information about the initial hybrid variant, which will be followed by plug-in hybrid and all-electric versions.

In addition to the basic outline of its 1.6-litre petrol-electric powertrain with six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, Hyundai has detailed more features that it claims make the hybrid hatch more fun to drive than its rivals.

For a start, its 32kW/170Nm permanent magnet synchronous electric motor has been optimised with the use of thinner-gauge steels, while square-section copper wire reduces core and copper efficiency losses.

A range of up to 120km is possible in electric-only mode, and when combined with the 77kW GDI four-cylinder engine, combined torque is boosted to 265Nm when in first gear for maximum acceleration. In gears two to six, torque drops back to 235Nm.

The result is sportier, more regular car acceleration and driving characteristics and not the “rubber band” acceleration experienced in other hybrids, according to Hyundai.

Two modes allow the driver to select a particular driving style: Sport mode, which holds higher engine revs for more responsive acceleration; and Eco mode, which upshifts gears earlier to save fuel.

Other range-boosting features include flexible body panels that change shape at speed to reduce aerodynamic drag to 0.24Cd, while the Ioniq suspension set-up is tuned specifically to work optimally with a specially developed 17-inch Michelin tyre.

Hyundai has not yet released fuel economy figures but says a closed-wheel design with “curtains” on the front wheels, active air flap ducts, low-drag diffuser and smooth underside all contribute to “the world’s best hybrid fuel efficiency”.

TESLA 2015 DELIVERIESTESLA Motors delivered a record-setting 17,192 Model S vehicles in the final three months of 2015, and combined with a further 208 units of its new Model X SUV, racked up 50,580 worldwide deliveries for the year.

Although the Californian EV-maker was quick to downplay surpassing its 50,000-unit target as an indication of financial success, the number of Model S units delivered to customers in Q4 2015 is nearly double that of the previous record quarter, and 75 per cent more than the same period in 2014.

MURTAUGH TO LEAVE CHINA’S QOROS AFTER LESS THAN A YEAR IN TOP JOBBy TERRY MARTIN

VETERAN global automotive industry executive Phil Murtaugh will leave fledgling Chinese auto-maker Qoros at the end of this month after less than a year in the top job, citing personal reasons.

Well known in Australia in previous roles as head of Asia-Pacific operations for both General Motors and Chrysler, Mr Murtaugh, 60, joined Qoros in February last year, charged with improving sales and establishing the company as “a recognised and successful iconic brand”.

Launched in 2007, Qoros produces cars in China under a 50:50 joint venture between Chery Automobile and Singapore-based Kenon Holdings, which was spun off from Israeli investment firm

Israel Corporation a year ago.The car-maker, which has bold

plans for exports into Europe and is a frequent subject of rumour in relation

to the Australian market, said in a statement that chairman Anning Chen will take on the role of acting CEO, supported by vice-chairman Dan Cohen and “a reinvigorated operational management team”.

Mr Cohen was one of a succession of CEOs of the now-

defunct electric vehicle infrastructure company Better Place (also supported by Israel Corporation), replacing Australian Evan Thornley early in 2013 but then overseeing the EV company’s liquidation a few months later.

The announcement of Mr Murtaugh’s departure coincides with a restructure

at Qoros, which according to a report in London’s Financial Times has now created two new business units: one focused on electric vehicles and another looking at alternative business models to car ownership and self-driving technologies.

Commenting on the management shake-up, Mr Cohen was quoted as saying: “What was missing and what the shareholders were hoping to see were, one, higher sales, and secondly we wanted to see a car company that is not just another (manufacturer) – that is a unique player … That was very difficult and slow to develop.”

Chinese reports also quote Mr Chen as saying that Mr Murtaugh’s resignation came after a period of negotiation.

Lotus expects new super-light, speedster-style 3-Eleven to be master of the ’RingBy RON HAMMERTON

LOTUS predicts its fastest model, the 3-Eleven, will be capable of a sub-seven-minute lap of Germany’s Nurburgring, putting it in rare company with supercars such as the Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce and Porsche 918 Spyder.

Officially, only four cars have managed to crack the seven-minute barrier on the 20.8km Nordschleife track that is regarded as the definitive test of vehicle speed and handling competence.

Based on the Elise but with a super-light speedster-style open body, the 3-Eleven is now on sale in the United Kingdom, with first deliveries scheduled for March.

Production will be limited to 311 units, with none destined for Australia, at least via official importer European Automotive Imports.

The 3-Eleven comes in two varieties – Road and Race – with the latter weighing just 890kg and powered by a 336kW/450Nm version of Lotus’ highly

modified, Toyota-based supercharged 3.5-litre V6.

It is said to be capable of blasting from zero to 100km/h in about three seconds and on to a top speed of 290km/h.

The slightly heavier (925kg) and less powerful (305kW) Road version makes the 0-100km/h dash about four tenths of a second slower, but that still puts it in Porsche 911 GT3 league.

Announcing the start of sales in the UK, Group Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales said few cars on the market could match the 3-Eleven in looks, speed and lap times.

“The 3-Eleven is the perfect car for a fast lap at the Nurburgring and is a sub-seven-minute car in favourable conditions; a time like this puts the 3-Eleven firmly into hypercar territory,” he said.

Lotus says the 3-Eleven Race is already the fastest car ever tested at the company’s Hethel test circuit, lapping

in 1:19.5 minutes. At Nurburgring, the fastest lap by

a production car is said to be a 6:48.0 by English-built road-legal racecar, the Radical SR8LM in 2009.

Its less serious stablemate, the Radical SR8, earlier achieved a 6:56.08 lap in 2005, while more recently the hybrid petrol-electric Porsche 918 supercar did it in 6:57.00 and more recently again, Lamborghini’s Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce stopped the clocks at 6:59.73 last year.

Lotus has not said when it might tackle “the green hell” with the 3-Eleven, or who will drive it.

A massive rear wing, race-style front splitter, twin front canards and sculpted bodywork on the Race version are said to generate up to 215kg of downforce, making the sportscar capable of cornering with lateral acceleration of 1.5g.
