Fronthaul Life Cycle – Understanding the need
Construction / Installation
Commissioning / Acceptance
Maintenance / Troubleshooting
Optimization
Construction/ Installation is not the first phaseA significant amount of planning went into site selection which installers must be aware of
Installation is typically performed by multiple teams, cooperating to deliver a quality site
Commissioning / Acceptance verifies construction before starting the maintenance phase

What challenges are faced when installing the fronthaul?Service Provider Perspective
• Consistency in testing• Need to increase installation quality to avoid maintenance problems from
the start• Optimizing and improving the installation process to reduce delays• Improving contractor efficiency to improve the cost model
Contractor Perspective
• Improve Quality to reduce “free” re-work• Make the documentation deliverables easy to produce to accelerate
ticket close out• Improve efficiency to improve project profitability

Job Manager …
is a workflow tool included in the TBERD-5800 at no additional cost
executes test plans created prior to going to a job site making it easy to load test templates
provides customizable job guidance
improves quality and efficiency via repeatability
makes it easy to close out jobs by summarizing reports from multiple tests
Job Manager …
is not required to run a test
is not a paid feature or subscription service
does not dictate parameters or pass/fail criteria for specific tests
does not require a test plan administrator
does not force a workflow, it’s only a checklist
What is Job Manager?

Benefits to creating a test plan before testing
Reduce Typing Guide Technicians
Ensure the job is Done Right
Summarize Status
Create complex jobs with multiple tests
Fill out job info once before getting to site
Eliminate the need to fill in info at the job site
Step by step checklist
Ensure all tests are done
Visual guides embedded in checklist provide guidance
Single summary report provides comprehensive proof all tests pass
All test details still available in the reports
Avoid time consuming manual documentation steps
Make every tech an expert just by following the plan

Job Manager in DetailCreate a single close-out report containing the status of all tests
Load jobs from a file imported onto instrument
Job information applied to all tests
View each required test in the plan
Saving test reports moves status of each step from To Do to Pass, Fail, or Complete
Launch each test
Customizable guidance

Tech CreatedEach technician creates a test plan for his own jobs
Saves time at the job site
Delivers maximum flexibility
Who owns the test plans – you decide?
3rd Party CreatedTest plan communicates what needs to be done
Manager or project leads create them
Increase consistency and alignment on job tasks
Automatic Job CreationAPI lets you directly create test plans

Checking VSWR as part of RAN Installation
What is VSWR?
Voltage Standing Wave Ratio, is a measure of how efficiently radio-frequency power is transmitted from a power source, through a transmission line, into an antenna.
In an ideal system, 100% of the energy is transmitted.
In real systems, some of the power is reflected back toward the source (like an echo).
Reflections cause destructive interference.
VSWR measures these voltage variances.
Values closer to 1 are better.

The importance of Diversity Imbalance
Measure receive power levels on 4 antennas to ensure similar levels

Detecting PIM as part of RAN Installation
What is PIM?
PIM stands for Passive Intermodulation. PIM is the generation of interfering signals caused by nonlinearities in components of a wireless system. Two signals mix together and cause interference.
This usually happens anywhere that two different metals come together.
It is caused by rust, corrosion, loose connections, dirt, oxidation, and any similar contamination. Even nearby metal objects can cause PIM.
Two RF signals relatively close in frequency are required to trigger PIM effects. The higher the power used, the greater the PIM signals generated.
Interfering signals can raise the noise floor and block desired signals. End effects include dropped calls, decreased system capacity, and decreased data rates.
How do we detect PIM?
Connect to the RRH and instruct it to transmit at maximum power.
Use receiver to listen for interference.

Passive Intermodulation (PIM)
Set threshold and bandwidth
Measured by transmitting a test signal and calculating slope of min hold
Pass/Fail on up to 4 antennas
Visualization of PIM in spectrum analysis

• Verify installed satellite antennas have no “blind spots” are not blocked from line of sight to satellites
• Run a 12 to 24 hour CNO Spectrogram to confirm good signal strength from multiple satellites in diverse sky plot positions

TB/MTS 5800-EPP (Ethernet Peering Partner) is a layer 1 traffic reflector▫ Supports reflecting RFC 2544, Y.1564 or QuickCheck Tests over the cable
All cable diagnostic test results are integrated with Job Manager
3 main test
1. Cable Length – is the cable under 100 meters2. Cable Wiremap – are pin-outs correct3. Shield ground continuity test – did I crimp it
down correctly?
