Camouage - what works?Does it work? Weve had aew instances over the yearwhere it didnt seem to matter

I you are keeping still, camo will help you to conceal yoursel, buti you cant keep still, it doesnt matter what you are wearing, theyare going to see you, says Mark. You could be wearing one o thoseridiculous ghillie suits with all that hair hanging o them, but theywill still see you i you are moving around. Tey see movement.Most birds I think are colour blind or they have got poor colourvision. Also i you wait until the pigeons are just about settling, itdoesnt matter what you are wearing, they cant see you, because they

are ocused on not hitting the ground.

Weve asked Mark to take camo to a new level. He steps out o thepigeon hide in a hideous camouage mankini. Is this the emperorsnew clothes?

Yes, no problem at all, he says, and adds: But I am not sure Iam going to swing through properly.

Well come back to Mark later and see how hes getting on.Broadly it comes down to what birds and animals can actuallysee. Do the colours matter or is it more about movement?

Andy Crow has also been known to wear camo but today hesgoing to try and shoot a ew crows while wearing a hi-vis jacket(our budget couldnt stretch to two mankinis).

He stands up to shoot a pigeon. You cant get any brighter thanthis can you? he says, and down it comes. You wouldnt go pi-geon shooting, standing in a wood walking down a hedgerow inthis, but i you have a good hide, back to eldcrat again, goodhide, keep still, no trouble at all.

Staying low inside his expertly built hide, and even with the sunshining directly on him, the crows and pigeons are ambushed byAndy. He loves his camo but shooting is as much about under-standing your quarry.

O course being spotted is just one way o losing that shootingopportunity. Teres also your aroma. Sensible olk stalk with

the wind in their ace but you can be scent-ree shampoo and washes are big business in the United States but there are limits.

One o the closest things we know to a ox is Mike Powell. Weare only at his home in Devon or ve minutes when Mike spotsa rabbit. Tis is an ideal opportunity or the Sporting Riemaga-zine expert to show how the clothes he stands up in are as gooda camo as any.

He gets to within ve yards. I you watch animals you can seetheir reactions to what is going on, says Mike. When we used to shoot oxes with shotguns you could move out to them eitherin daylight or night by watching very careully what their reac-

tions were and reacting to their reactions. Clearly it isnt always going to work. You are not going to walk up to every ox or everydeer. But you can get away with it quite oten.

So how good is modern camo? I hide a series o camo and green

jackets in a hedge. Mike walks towards them rom 50 yards and seeswhich he spots rst. First is a bright green camo patter called Hard-woods - but that s because we conduct the test amid the browns oautumn. Next is a tweed coat at about 20 yards out. It is ollowed bya battered Barbour. Te winner is Rivers West in Mossy Oak.

For Mike, nothing beats being absolutely still. I you keep still it isalmost irrelevant what you are wearing, he says. I you keep stilllong enough, they will generally relax. Not always, but they will re-lax.

Back to Mark, who has been getting on with the pigeons, or thenal word. It is a wonder when I am dressed like this that I am ever
