Amateur All-Age: “An Amateur All-Age Stake at a Spaniel Field Trial shall be for all dogs at least six months of age on the day of the trial at which the stake is judged. A person shall be considered an amateur if he has not attempted to receive any part of his livelihood from the training, handling or showing of field trial or hunting dogs in the calendar year of the trial or the preceding calendar year. Dogs running an Amateur Stake must be owned by an amateur and handled by an amateur.” CKC Sporting Spaniel Field Trial

Rules & Regulations, Chapter 10, section 6

12.1 Eligibility 12.1.4 The dog declared the winner of the last National Amateur Championship Stake shall be invited to compete in the stake. Pursuant to this regulation and until otherwise ordered by the Board of Directors of The Canadian Kennel Club, entry of dogs in this stake shall be confined to the following: (a) A dog which has placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th in an Amateur All Age Stake at a CKC approved Trial held under these rules hosted by a member club in good standing with the Canadian National Spaniel Field Trial Association (CNSFTA will be qualified for the following 2 National Amateur Championship Stakes). (b) All dogs which have previously won this Stake.

Entry Fees: $220.00 per dog, listing fees for dogs not registered with the C.K.C. is $8.85 per event unless an ERN has been applied for. No dog will be allowed to compete unless fees have been paid.

Listing Fee: A listing fee as established by the Canadian Kennel Club must accompany the entry of a dog for which a Canadian Kennel Club individual registration number or Event Registration Number (ERN) is not shown on the entry form. Event Registration Number: All dogs that are foreign born and foreign owned require an event registration number (ERN) to enable them to be awarded titles by the CKC. Dogs may be entered as “listed”; however, an ERN must be obtained within 30 days of obtaining points, awards or scores to avoid cancellation. Application forms may be obtained from the Field Trial Secretary.

Non-Member Participation Fee: An annual fee for awards and titles will be charged to a Canadian non-member of CKC. The fee will match the ERN fee. In order to protect the awards/titles earned, the non-

member will have the option to become a CKC member or pay the non-member participation fee. Failure to comply within 30 days of notification will result in all awards and titles being cancelled. NOTE: it is less expensive to become a CKC member than to pay this fee each year!

Notes for the Gallery (Spectators) & Competitors

In accordance with The Spaniel Field Trial Rules and Regulations an article of BLAZE ORANGE clearly visible above the waist, must be worn by all persons in the field. NO exceptions.

For a close-up view of the event we suggest that you follow along behind the Marshall in the “Gallery”. If you choose to do so, please obey the instructions of the Field Trial Marshall at all times.

Follow the Marshall's instructions and keep close behind the Marshall and do not string out in a long line, or spread out overly far from the center line.

If the gallery has advanced down the field, spectators must not travel down or across the field to catch up—rejoin at the start of the course.

Avoid loud talk, applauding or noise while the dogs are working, as it could disturb birds or dogs.

Children are welcome, but please keep them within the gallery at all times.

Noncompeting dogs must not be on the grounds (except in the parking area), and should be leashed when not kenneled.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages is not permitted on the field trial grounds. DO NOT LITTER. Your assistance in keeping the grounds clean will help ensure that we will be allowed to use them another time.

Absolutely NO SMOKING anywhere on the grounds and NO OPEN FIRES.

On behalf of the Calgary English Springer Spaniel Club and the members of the

Amateur Field Trial Committee I would like to welcome you to the 2014 Canadian

Amateur Spaniel Championship. Members of the Amateur National Field Trial

Committee have worked hard over the last year to ensure that all of the handlers

can enjoy the very best trial possible, both on and off the field. We want to thank

all of you for attending this year’s Amateur. We look forward to catching up with

all of our friends in the trial community and watching you and your dog work.

We want to extend our heart-felt gratitude to all of the sponsors and contributors

for their assistance in making this event a success.

2014 Gun Team Captain Kevin Stewart It is indeed an honor to have been selected to Captain the 2014 Canadian Amateur National Spaniel Championship.

Since 1989, l have enjoyed gunning field trials in

Canada and the United States and as I participate

in field trails, I am grateful for the help from family

and friends. My wife Carolyn and I live in

Bearspaw, near Calgary and own two springers.

We hope everyone will thoroughly enjoy the trial.

I have assembled an excellent gun team and we will endeavor to provide the best opportunities to showcase your dogs. I would like to thank Kevin Stewart, the Calgary English Springer Spaniel Club and the Trial Committee for inviting me to shoot the National Amateur Spaniel Field Trial Championship. I have been married to my beautiful wife Audra for 28 years, and have raised our four children and many springer spaniels in Fallon, Nevada. I bought my first springer spaniel in 1981 and have been hunting over them ever since. I currently have three fine dogs that I enjoy hunting with every chance I get. I got into the field trial game in the late 90's and started shooting at trials a few years later. I have had the pleasure of shooting in both U.S. Nationals and the Canadian National. I have had the honor of shooting with some of the best

trial guns in the game and would like to thank; Gordon Breitbarth who asked me to shoot my first field trial, Alex Stewart, Roger Thorne and Kevin Stewart all who have spent countless hours coaching and counseling me on the fine points of field trial gunning. I have had the pleasure of shooting many trials in the beautiful Calgary area and know that this National will be hosted by a group of dedicated spaniel folks who put on really great trials. Looking forward to seeing you all there, and wish the best of luck to everyone.

I have been around dogs and guns most of my life. In the past fifteen years, I have had the opportunity to enjoy the patient mentorship of some of the best gunners and dog men around: a rare experience.

For me, it is a real honor to be part of the 2014 National gun team. I consider it an privilege to shoot for the dogs and their handlers. Good luck to all competitors

Will Pick, Wisconsin

Home, for my wife Wendy and I, is a farm in southwestern Wisconsin where we live along with our four Springers. I am not always sure who is in charge, the dogs or us, but we usually manage to find a middle ground. My father who started me hunting and shooting when I was very young has always had Springers, so I grew up hunting with them and have been around them all of my life. I make my living as a residential home builder. When not involved in work or dog games, I am an avid bowhunter and have hunted throughout the U.S. & Canada for many different species of wild game. I got into shotgun sports when in the late 90's I was competing with my spaniels in hunting competitions

and my shooting was holding my dogs back. I made a goal to improve and started taking lessons and competing in sporting clays competitions where I still travel and compete on a regular basis,this year being selected to the 2014 all American team. I am also an NSCA

certified wing and clay shooting instructor and work with numerous wing and clay shooters at my range on my farm to help them improve they’re skills I was introduced to trial gunning, when at a training session I was shooting for some trialer friends of mine, and my shooting caught the eye of Lea Ames. Lea was nice enough to stay after the training session and asked me if I would be interested in shooting trials. Lea introduced me to trial gunning and he along with Alex and Kevin Stewart, Waldo Prock and others too many to mention have coached me along to where I am today, running my dogs in trials and shooting wherever I am invited to shoot. I am honored to be selected to shoot the 2014 Amateur National Spaniel Field Trial Championship and have had the privilege of shooting with most of the members on the team, so I know that we will all do our best to help all of the handlers and their dogs to do well. A sincere thanks for your vote of confidence and good luck to all.

I have been involved in ESS Field Trials since 1990, when I returned to Canada from England with my first Springer Spaniel. It’s been my privilege to own and compete with 3 Field Trail Champions, FTCH Magnum of Stanthorn, FTCH Bushbuster’s Dan and FTCH Just for the Hell Abitt. The highlight of my Field Trial career came in 2004 when I fortunate enough to place second in the 2004 National Spaniel Field Trail Championship in Regina SK with FTCH Just for the Hell Abitt (Buckwheat). In 2005, along with Mike Nolan, I judged the National Spaniel Field Trial Championship in Quebec. I began

shooting at Springer Field Trails 2003. In 2010, I was a member of the Gun Teams for both the National Spaniel Field Trial Championship and the National Amateur Spaniel Field Trial Championship. It is an honor to be asked to shoot the 2014 National Amateur Spaniel Field Trial Championship and I want to wish all the competitors the best of luck.

I live in Great Falls, Montana. I have owned and hunted Springers for more than 30 years. I have been involved with spaniel field trials and hunt tests for over 25 years.

MICHEL BOURDEAU QUÉBEC – CANADA

I grew up in a small village south of Montréal near the USA border. My love for

the outdoors was instilled at an early age on my grandfather’s and uncle’s farms

hunting ruffed grouse through the forests. When I was sixteen I had my first

introduction to hunting dogs. They were beagles and coon hounds, owned by my

uncle and older friends at the local club, where we trained, held field trials and

hunted rabbits, foxes and coyote.

At a young age I left my native soil to pursue my studies for a career at sea. These

kept me away from hunting for some years. Springer Spaniels came into my life in

1988 when I bought my first puppy as a family dog for my daughter.

Optimistically I hoped to use him for hunting upland game. Sadly the dog was not

a field breed Springer. I had a lot to learn!

My hunting dog club interests led to attending Spaniel Field Trials where I saw

what well trained Spaniels could do and I got really interested in participating in

Field Trials. Shortly thereafter, I acquired my second Springer, this time a field

bred Springer Spaniel pup I named Blaze. My first field trial as a participant was

in a minor stake in 1994. I became hooked on the trailing game and have been ever

since despite a disaster at my first field trial in an open stake. Over the years I have

carried out all of the various jobs associated with putting on and running field

trials. Back in those days, due to the demands of my profession, I wasn’t able to

train and trial as much as I would have liked.

In more recent times and now retired, I’ve had the opportunity to own and handle a

number of Springer Spaniels and to be active in training and trialing. I championed

some of my dogs and in 2005 had the High Point Open dog. I have judged several

field trials in Canada and the United States.

Every Fall I religiously and extensively hunt my dogs on wild birds including

ruffed and spruce grouse, woodcocks and ducks. So over those years, having run

and used my dogs for both trialing and hunting, I am fully aware of the value of a

great high quality gun dog and of the teamwork required in both trialing and

hunting.

I am flattered to have been nominated again by the Calgary English Springer

Spaniel Club this time to judge the 2014 Canadian National Amateur

Championship. I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been chosen by my

colleagues to judge that Trial. It is an event with a storied history. I look forward

to sharing that task with my co-judge Cindy.

CINDY GOODE WILSON NEW YORK – USA

I was born and raised in New Jersey; I moved to Colorado in 1976 and bought my

first Springer. I joined the Rocky Mountain Springer Spaniel club and got hooked

on Springers. I really have to thank John Phillips, Ron Fiebig, for teaching me so

much about the dogs and their natural abilities. For the longest time myself and

Dave Scott and Pete Davis was the Rocky Mountain club, putting on trials and

helping new people learn the sport. I travel around the Rocky Mountain interclub

trials with FC and AFC Fawnhaven’s Shining Doc and AFC Fawnhaven’s

Increditable PA meeting lot of new people and having lots of fun. I field trialed

ever since as an amateur until 2002 when I married Gary Wilson who owns

Sunrise Kennels in Canisteo New York. I then became a professional dog trainer.

My latest friends include FC Sunrise Zang and his off springs FC FTCH Sunrise Z

Man that received a 2nd place in the Canadian nationals in 2010. As a pro I have

trained and ran several great dogs to their titles. I have judged trials from coast to

coast and have seen many different conditions all over this country. The one thing

that is consistent is a good working spaniel that uses it nose and work with his

friend to find the dinner for the night. Thank you everyone that asked me to watch

their dogs. I am looking forward to judging with MICHEL BOURDEAU, he is a

great person very knowable about dogs and hunting and always make you feel

welcome at his trial.
