HOLY COMMUNION If you find it difficult to walk to the front of the Church to receive Holy Commun-ion, please notify one of the ushers before Mass that you would like a priest to bring Communion to you.

Celebrating over a Century of Faith and Education

St. Barbara Parish is a Roman Catholic community celebrating a century of faith in the Bridgeport area. Our faith community welcomes all people, helping them grow spiritually through liturgy, prayer, and education, and socially through activities for all ages. Our school takes great pride in fostering these values in our children. We give witness to our faith by sharing with each other our God-given gifts and talents. We nourish and sustain our faith as a family by celebrating the sacraments and the presence of the risen Lord among us in the Eucharist.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR AND PRINCIPAL

RENEW MY CHURCH

Summary: The overwhelming major ity expressed the desire to keep St. Barbara School open. They wanted St. Barbara to be given time to expand. A minority were open to the idea of working with St. Therese by sharing resources. With the exception of only a few, no one wants St. Barbara School to close or be com-pletely taken over. We would like to work together to find a solution for both schools. Keeping St. Barbara School OPEN St. Barbara needs more time to see the results of marketing strategies. Marketing was not a priority in the

past. It is only in the last two years that St. Barbara has hired a Marketing Director. The Tax Credit scholarship program, which the Cardinal strongly advocated, should be given time to

work. We have already reached out to several CPS families who chose St. Barbara as their school of choice.

St. Barbara is a authentic Catholic school, with a majority of students who are Catholic. It is currently via ble and has potential for growth.

Several Santa Lucia students have already transferred to St. Barbara and several more are inquiring about transferring.

St. Barbara is an ethnically diverse school. Families drive in from throughout the city and suburbs to send their children to St. Barbara. This diverse culture needs to continue.

Closing St. Barbara does not guarantee that current students will enroll at St. Therese or any other Catholic school. Families may consider other options, such as CPS selective enrollment or charter schools.

St. Barbara has always served the community and has consistently maintained the school campus (parking lot, gym, lower hall, etc). There are no add-ons or additional construction needed.

The majority of St. Barbara graduates attend Catholic high schools (St. Ignatius, De La Salle, St. Lau rence, etc.)

We cannot turn our back on Catholics. Many will feel that the Archdiocese has betrayed Catholics for a school that attracts families where only a small percentage will convert.

According to the Archdiocese, St. Barbara’s Aspire scores exceed those of other schools in the area. Why would the Archdiocese want to close a school that is mainly Catholic with high test scores?

Keeping St. Barbara school open shows that the Archdiocese values a well rounded Catholic education over only academics.

Aspire test scores prove that St. Barbara has the potential of being a Blue Ribbon school in the near future. St. Barbara became stagnant for several years due to the departure of a long time principal and the 1 year

tenure of a principal that left a negative impact on the school community. The new administration has been working hard to restore and expand the school. More time is needed.

St. Barbara is the only Catholic school west of Halsted Street and marketing efforts have been targeting the west side of Bridgeport, McKinley Park and even portions of Brighton Park.

St. Barbara is strategically located near the Orange line and one block off Archer Ave. Transportation is very accessible; it is near the expressway and major bus routes.

St. Barbara School is financially sound and has never been in debt to the Archdiocese.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, As you know, our Renew My Church parish meeting was held this past Monday evening. We would like to give you a summary of feedback we have received from the attendees at the meeting. The following is just a summary of the comments written on the questionnaires collected at the meeting on Monday. Any email and letters that were written will be forwarded directly to the Archdiocese.

Please consider remembering

St. Barbara Parish in your will.

First Friday Masses May 4th

* 8:30 a.m. Mass (in Church) * 6:00 p.m. Mass (in Church) * 6:45 p.m. Exposition

A Mass of Healing will be said this Tuesday, May 1st, at 6:00 p.m. in Church. This Mass is for the intention of all who need health blessings. Be sure to join

us for this special Mass which takes place the first Tuesday of every month. If there is anyone whom you would like to especially remember at this Mass, please submit their name to the rectory at (312) 842-7979.

Working with St. Therese Working with St. Therese would assist them with their lack of space, and would provide St. Barbara with

additional resources. We should find a way to work together without closing St. Barbara School St. Therese should consider sending their waiting list students to St. Barbara, assuming that those students

and their families want a Catholic education. Some parents will be open to the idea of partnership and collaboration but will strongly oppose St. Barbara

School closing. Additional Concerns/Questions The Archdiocese will lose not only students but many parishioners because of the drastic changes. Why doesn’t St. Therese explore expansion to Santa Lucia or All Saints/St. Anthony, both of which are

closer to their school. Santa Lucia and St. Therese have a shared history as well. Instead of closing down schools, why don’t schools with waiting lists share those lists with neighboring

schools? This process is moving too fast. More time is needed before making proposed comprehensive changes. Why would the Archdiocese allow St. Jerome to build new facilities under the To Teach Who Christ Is

campaign when St. Barbara School already has everything St. Jerome is planning? To Teach Who Christ Is is a diocesan campaign and the Cardinal should therefore have the authority to halt new con- struction until a decision has been made.

Why hasn’t St. Therese explored the option of expanding to St. Jerome? By merging schools with completely different identities, it will be difficult to find common ground on

many issues. Will parishioners and school families affected leave for other denominations due to drastic changes? Many have heard that other parishes/schools have pulled out of Renew My Church. If others can, why

can’t we? Why doesn’t the Archdiocese combine parishes by geographic area? By doing so, you will find common

ground among merging parishes. For example, St. Barbara and St. Mary of Perpetual Help already share resources and have a similar identity. St. Therese and Santa Lucia have a shared history. St.

Gabriel and Nativity of our Lord can continue to work together. Why haven’t students on the St. Therese waiting list considered attending another area Catholic school?

Are they not seeking a Catholic education? Submitted to the Renew My Church Consultant on April 24, 2018. Rev. Wojciech Artur Marat Mrs. Nicole Nolazco
