BackgroundTurow, a coal-fired power station at the wes-tern end of Lower-Silesia at the border to Germany and the Czech-Republic, was built in 1962 and comprises 10 blocks. The blocks 1 to 6 have 260MW each and the blocks 7 to 10 have 200MVA each. The power station feeds the Polish 220kV supergrid, the 110kV net-work of the power station itself and the coal mine.

In 1993 the Polish Energy Authority decided to refurbish the Power Station.

For the blocks 4, 5 & 6, which are now undergoing refur-bishment, ABB Switzerland Utility Automation is delivering the Station Automation System (SAS) for the electrical part of the generator and the 6kV & 0,4kV switchgear. The main contractor, Alstom (Switzerland) Ltd., placed the order with us.

In the past ABB Switzerland Utility Automation has also been involved in the refurbishment of Turow P/S. The deliveries included generation protection REG216 for the blocks 1-3 & 8-10, a monitoring interface to the data eva-luation station at DIRE (Power Plant Dispatch Center) and the SCS100 for the control room at DIRE.

Substation Automation System for the Generators of Blocks 4, 5 & 6

Requirements: The control and supervision of the electrical part of the energy generating process is done at the same workplace as that of the thermal process. The handling of both the thermal and the electrical process has to be the same for the operators.

Solution at the bay level:The bay level comprises: Generation protection REG216 alarms and display of setfiles Generator AVR - Unitrol P remote control of excitation as well as voltage control Control and synchronization of generator circuit breaker Control of 220kV isolators and earthing switches Control of transformer cooling groups Control of transformer tap-changer Indication of transformer protection alarms Control and supervision of 36 feeders for the 6kV switchgear HBT function of 6kV infeed HBT function of 0,4kV distribution infeed as well as breaker control Indication of measurements registered by transducers with LON works interface

Solution at the station level:At this level there is only the station PC connected to the event printer and the hardcopy plotter.

OPC Server: the new interfaceOn the station side the SA System is connected via OPC interface to the ABB Maestro power station process control system (which is also a part of the refurbishment).

OPC (Object linking and embedding for Process Control) is an open interface standard used by a number of leading automation hardware and software suppliers worldwide. The benefits of OPC are more choices, easy standardized process data exchange, and plug-and-play implementation.

The OPC Client can access (read and write) predefined data on the Server which is connected via ScilComApp (wrapper for native COM-enabled access) to the MicroSCADA database.

DIRE Power Plant Dispatch CenterThe SA system for the units 4 to 6 is not the only work, which was done in Turow. Already on previous occasions Turow was an excellent partner for the realization of innovative ideas.

In 1994 ABB Power Automation received the order for a SA System for the power plant Central Dispatch Center DIRE. The system is installed in the main control room and collects all the information from switchgear inside and outside the power station as well as from all generator breakers.

The data are available on different pictures on the SCS100 screens (in hot stand-by configuration) as well as being transferred by RTU20 Mimic Controller to the mimic board.

ConclusionWith this project the Power Station Turow is now the fourth one in Poland which is equipped with the ABB SA System. It shows our capa-bility to supply systems, which allow an easy exchange of information between different control and supervision systems e.g. genera-tors, auxiliary switchgear thus facilitating the work of the operators. The project is realized in collaboration with ABB Automatyki Ltd. our partner in Poland.
