Oh write my name Ratan

A bit about “Why File Services”• Efficient data management• Efficient disk space use:

• faster data storage and access (Tiered storage)• tidy up data by rearrangement (1s, 0s, unused storage spaces)

• Logical categorising of data*:• Sharing, access control and auditing• backup and restore• Virtual storage (storage pools…)

* not only in your network but across networks

Page 8: FileServicesRatan

Disk Management• You can also do the basics

• Format• Extend• Delete volume• Change Drive Letter

What is file server?• File servers are high-end computers that operate on networks to

store files, media, documents, folders, and databases. A file server is a central point of a network and is connected to all other networked computers. All other networked systems are known as clients and can access files on the server.

• Accessibility: with file server, its very easy for user in a local office to access files on the file server at the central office without going there.

There by improving the company output.

Page 10: FileServicesRatan

• Organization: its very important to have all your application and data store in one location. in case of any problem, it will be easy for you to secure one server than running all over the building tying to secure all the server.

• Time: Since man power in productivity is measure by time, by implementing file server, it is much faster to install an application once on a network - and copy it across the network to every workstation. by so doing saving time and energy.

Page 11: FileServicesRatan

• Cost: with the global economic uncertainty in today world, its very important for a company to implementing file server service ,because it will lower the cost of employing many administrator since must of the job can be perform by one man. also, by using sharing printer, plotters etc. will also save the company money

• Security: the Network Manager can allocate usernames and passwords to all users to try to prevent unauthorised access

• Dis: It can be frustrating to print to a printer in another room - and then find after a long trek - that there is no paper in the printer!

File Services (implement)

• File and storage services• File and iSCSI services

• File Server• Server Role• Branch Cache• Distributed File System• Data Deduplication• File Server Resource Manager• Network File System

Page 14: FileServicesRatan

Branch Cache

Page 15: FileServicesRatan

Branch Cache• Windows 2012 and later• Local File caching in branch office to

reduce network traffic in WAN links• 2 modes of caching- Hosted and

Distributed

• Setup a BranchCAche enabled Server in Main Office (Content Server):

• Install-windowsFeature fs-BrachCAche –includeManagementTools

• Setup Branch Office Cache (Infra, GPO)

• Configure Clients (GPO)

Page 16: FileServicesRatan

Hosted Branch Cache• Cache is set on a single host that serves

the local network• Centrally hosted• Required: A dedicated server

Page 17: FileServicesRatan

Distributed Branch Cache• Cache is set on a clients who have

already acceded the data• P2p storage• Windows 7 Ent, Ult, Windows 8.1

Page 18: FileServicesRatan

GPO ing

• Enable Hash Publication on File Servers:

• Comp conf\Policies\admin templ\network\lanman server: hash publication for branch cache

Page 19: FileServicesRatan

P-Shell ing• Install-WindowsFeature FS-BranchCache –

includeManagementTools• Hosted BC:

• Enable-BCHostedServer –RegisterSCP• Get-BCStatus to check• Preload Content from the BC-enabled Content Servers to the

hosted cache servers• Generate hash to stage data from content on each Content Server

{ Publish-BCFileContent or Publish-BCWebContent }• Export the staged data to a package { Export-BCCachePackage }• Import the package to each hosted BC server { Import-BCCachePackage }

• Something similar to DFS setup. Why you need: speeds up initial set up time

Page 20: FileServicesRatan

Clients• Enable-BCDistributed

• Set BranchCache Distributed• OrSet BranchCache Hosted Cache Mode (W7, S’08) Configure Hosted Cache Servers (W8,S12)
