Can you believe it is nearly spring? To
celebrate, the Taihape Community
Development Trust (TCDT), together
with the Cancer Society, is organising
the Spring Fling 2018. A variety of
events and competitions including
(but not limited to) a Baby Animal
Fair, a colouring in Competition, find
the mystery item in a shop window,
and a Community BBQ at the Outback
to close off the Spring Fling 2018.
More about these events and further
activities can be found from page 26
onwards. Don’t forget to register for
the Baby Animal Fair and the
Community BBQ!
This Newsletter has been printed
from our office at the Taihape Town
Hall. Previously it was the Rangitikei
District Council that printed for us at
no charge, and Taihape Area School
also helped us with the July issue. This
month however, the Taihape
Community Development Trust
secured funding from the Four
Regions Trust towards the purchase
of a large printer/copy machine that
will be able to print the newsletter for
Taihape.
This printer now ‘lives’ at our office
and trustees would like to take this
opportunity to say, ‘Thank you!’ to
the Four Regions Trust for their
generous donation.
Our next bit of news involves our
website: www.taihape.co.nz.
Redesigned by our local graphics
designer Raquel Duncan of PIKI
Design; if you’re wondering who’s
done such a brilliant job in drafting
the listings, she’s the one. If you’re a
local business owner/manager or part
of a sport club or group, please get in
touch with us and we’ll make sure
you’re listed (cont. p3).

You will be asked to register and then

On that note, we would also like to
add to this newsletter, by including a

After a couple of years in recess Keep
Taihape Beautiful (KTB) is back in
business & keen to continue with
projects. We are working with
council’s Parks & Reserves Team
Leader Athol Sanson on beautifying
the Taihape Ward & developing new
projects working with other local
groups.
Our most recent project, where we
assisted with funding & hands on
planting of the Gretna Corner
gardens, was extremely fulfilling. It
has made a great visual impact and
provided necessary safety
improvements with lower growing &
well-placed plants. We are indeed
indebted to Athol for showcasing
local plants grown from locally
sourced seeds & the foresight to
make our gardens quite unique. We
are certainly keen to see the
continued planting in the remaining
gardens in the CBD and know our
gardens are well cared for on Athol’s
watch.
Our next project will see us
participate in the ‘Keep New Zealand
Beautiful’ Clean Up Week. In
alignment with World Clean Up Day,
Keep New Zealand Beautiful have
partnered with G.J. Gardner Homes,
to bring a bigger and better annual
Clean Up Week. This is the largest
national clean-up event in New
Zealand, with almost 40,000
volunteers taking part in 699 events,
nationwide in 2017!
With support from The Taihape
Community Development Trust,
Taihape Garden Club & Taihape
Rotary, along with other Clubs,
organisations & schools keen to sign
up, KTB intends to make this event all-
inclusive of the Taihape Ward
residents. This not only gives
everyone the chance to ‘do their bit’
toward making the town sparkling but
also gives that sense of pride in being
part of an easy and affective project.
Taihape’s Birthday, Saturday the 15th
September has been nominated as
our clean-up day. What a great way to
celebrate the towns 124th birthday –
we look forward to seeing everyone
out celebrating & making a
difference.
Registration on the day will be at St
Davids Church in Huia St starting at
10.00am otherwise contact Jan
Byford on 388 0194.

On Thursday the 2nd of August
Taihape Police held a recruiting and
information day at Taihape Area
School. Members of the Armed
Offenders Squad, Dog section along
with a Liaison Officer attended with
Taihape Police Staff. This was a
successful day as several students
expressed an interest at joining the
Police. Taihape Police manned the
BBQ and provided a sausage sizzle
and during lunch time played the
students in a game of basketball. The
game was a close one with the
students winning by a narrow margin.
We would like to thank Bonds
Jewellers and Lasercraft Signs and
Engraving for sponsoring a Trophy
and Taihape Four Square for
sponsoring the BBQ. This trophy will
be known as the Sports challenge and
will be contested between the
students and local Police a few times
during the year and each time it will
be a different sport.
Police would like to remind the
community that they need to advise
Police of any crime or suspicious
activity no matter how minor it may
be. We encourage anyone with
information to contact the local Police
or alternatively report anything
anonymously to Crime Stoppers on
0800 555 111.
Your local Police are happy to speak
with anyone and provide advice or
assistance and as I said in a previous
letter If you see one of us out walking
the beat or at the station feel free to
approach us for a chat as we want to
work with the community to make it
a safer and better place.
We have recently received complaints
about various scam phone calls.
Police advise anyone who receives
one of these type of calls to not pass
on any personal information over the
phone or purchase any vouchers as
some of the callers are requesting. It
is advised that you hang up
immediately and report the incident
to Police.
Constable Jonathan Jarvis and his
family recently made the move to
Taihape from Auckland and are
settling in well. Feel free to say hello
if you see him out and about.
Police again want to remind people to
drive to the conditions due to this
time of year and allow extra time for
your journey.
Regards,
Constable Justin Moore

Hi everyone,
I thought it may be helpful to provide you with regular updates on what is happening
in the real estate market in our region. The following commentary is hot off the
REINZ latest statistics monthly report. I hope you find it helpful when making your
all-important real estate decisions.
Compared to July 2017:
• Rangitikei District Median Prices increased from $172,000 to $215,000
• The volume of sales also increased from 20 to 22
The Manawatu/Region median price trend is increasing strongly, with the volume
trend showing signs of upward movement. The House Price Index has had the
second strongest increase over the past month of all the regions along with the third
highest twelve-month increase.
Bindi Norwell the REINZ CEO reported: “The Palmerston North market is currently
very advantageous from a seller’s prospective and agencies are reporting they are
desperately short of listings. There is strong buyer interest and prices are holding
up. Interest is mainly driven by 1st home buyers and owner occupiers looking to
upgrade. Sales volume will pick up as listings start to increase which hopefully will
be the case in September when Spring arrives.” (Source: REINZ Report)
Our office in Taihape has been busy over the winter period with buyers from the
bigger cities looking to purchase for down-sizing, investment or to have a base in our
central region. We anticipate activity to increase as we head into Spring and
Summer.

The TCDT, would like to thank
the following organisations in
providing grants towards
activities & events that were
organised for our community in
the previous 8 months:
Gumboot Signage taken to the
Next Stage
Fabulous results have come from
the first three Gumboot Sign
Workshops however, due to lower
participation than hoped, the Trust
is going the next step: Using four of
the completed works, Darryl
(Lasercraft) is collaborating with
Trust member Gary Johnson who
runs the Whanau Hobby Hut each
Wednesday night. Together they
will complete four signs so that the
Taihape public can see the finished
works.
After this further funding will be
sought and the fourth workshop
with Richard Aslett can go ahead.
Approximately twenty signs are the
Trust’s goal for Gumboot Day 2018
and everyone is encouraged to
come along and create long lasting
and fun signs to light up Taihape’s
No.1 Calendar event. We will keep
you posted!

Taihape Birthday Coming up!
Did you know that the first settlers
arrived in Taihape in 1894? By that
time the main centres in New
Zealand were already established
and it was from the relatively
‘civilised’ cities of Christchurch and
Wellington that a second wave of
pioneering families would set out
for the isolated, rugged hinterland
of the North Island. This ‘move’ was
initiated by the Farm Improvement
Settlement Scheme. It was not easy
to find employment in the 1890s
and a scheme was set up by
Government to enable settlers
without great financial backing to
take up smaller areas of land by
lease with the option to buy. As a
consequence, a group of people got
together in Christchurch and
formed an association for farm
settlement. They named
themselves the Collinsville
Cooperative Settlement
Association.
Two of the members left
Christchurch to select the best
location from those made available
by the government for settlement.
After inspection, they
recommended the site in the
Rangitikei that was destined to
become Taihape.
On the 15th of September 1894 the
first families arrived and
established themselves in what was
to become Hautapu Street (the
main street). Not all of the original
settlers remained in Taihape,
however one year after settlement,
the first settlers celebrated the
anniversary of their arrival of the
previous year and this became an
annual event for many years.
Over the years Taihape grew
steadily and a major influence on
the town was the Main Trunk Line.
The government had long planned
for it to come through Taihape. As it
advanced northward from
Wellington, many of the towns
ahead of it boomed – and died. But
not Taihape!
