Liquid Filter Bag Basics
Filter Bags Advantages
Ease of installation
Low cost
Simple to operate
Quick change of the filter bag
Filter Bag technology emerged strong in the 1960’s and 1970’s offering the following advantages:
Versatile across varied industries, applications and operating conditions
Competes and compliments other filter methods
Filter Bag Systems
Open Systems Low pressure or gravity Adaptor Head Filter Bags Tie-on filter bags
Closed Systems Pressurized Housings Pumped fluid Wide range of filter bags
Adaptor Head and Tie-on Filter Bag
Open system No support for the bag Low pressure and low flow rate Usually single pass Minimal capital investment cost
Types of Filter Bags Mesh and Felt Drawstring or clamped bags Adaptor head filter bags
Closed System
Pressurized Filter Bag system
Traditionally uses a pump Includes a pressurized filter housing Accommodates higher flow rate and greater
pressure Single or multiple pass through the filter Side stream or full flow High dirt loading Easy change out system Many bag styles available
Closed Filter Bag System
Made up of three main components:
The filter vessel
The restrainer or support basket
The filter bag
Filter VesselStandard Sizes
Size is determined by understanding the application
Viscosity Flow rate Temperature Pressure Dirt loading Desired Micron retention Micron distribution of contaminate
Vessel TypesSide Entry: Fluid enters vessel through the side
Simple construction Economical Fasten the lid with a band clamp or swing bolts
Vessel TypesTop Entry:Fluid enters the vessel through the top
Lid acts as the hold down mechanism for the bag
Easy change out Better bag sealing
Vessel Types
Duplex
Two separate systems share the same inlet and outlet
Double the filtration capacity by increasing the surface area
Use of isolation valves allow a change-out without interrupting process flow
Vessel TypesMulti Bag
Used in high flow or high dirt applications
Optional inlet and outlet configurations
Many lid constructions available for ease of use
Housing anywhere from 3 to 24 filter bags
Restrainer BasketPerforated or mesh stainless steel construction
Creates a “bypass free” environment A seal is created between
the bag and the basket and the housing
Provides critical support for the bag
Bag can not withstand thepressure and flow without the basket support
Filter Bag
Made up of three basic elements
