COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION
COMPARTMENT: 216
ENTRY YEAR: 2011 Compartment Acreage: 1,273
County: Emmet Revision Date: 6/4/2009 Stand Examiner: Harig Legal Description: T34N R4W Sec. 28, 33, 34 Management Goals: To provide for the protection, integrated management and responsible use of a healthy, productive and undiminished forest resource base for the social, recreational, environmental and economic benefit of the State of Michigan. Soil and Topography: This compartment is rolling to very steep. Dominant soil type is Blue Lake - Leelanau Association. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: State ownership within the compartment is contiguous with private property surrounding a majority of the perimeter. The surrounding area is lightly developed farm/residential. Unique, Natural Features: None Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None known. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: No surface water in this compartment, therefore no fisheries concerns.
Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment contains mostly upland hardwoods with a few areas of aspen and grassy openings. Much of the compartment has already been treated. Treatments of forested areas will maintain hard mast producing trees and non forested stands will be treated to maintain the openings and preserve the apple trees present. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of ice-contact and glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between 200 and 400 feet. The Devonian Antrim Shale and Traverse Group subcrop below the glacial drift. The Antrim and Traverse are quarried for cement products and stone. Gravel pits are located in the area, and there is good potential. The nearest oil and gas production, the Antrim Shale, is located six miles to the south. The Antrim Shale is absent in this area and there is no known oil and gas potential. Vehicle Access: Access is good throughout the compartment. Survey Needs: The proposed treatments bound private property. Some survey assistance may be needed. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: This compartment has several miles of snowmobile and Motorcycle trail as well as the North Country Pathway. Fire Protection: Additional Compartment Information:

Present stand is mostly poor quality, multiple stem trees. Do patch and/or strip cuts to create canopy gaps (30' - 50') to encourage regeneration. Reduce canopy to approximately 70%.

DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS
Conservation Area SCA = Special Conservation Area
HCVA = High Conservation Value AreaERA = Ecological Reference Area
An aquatic or terrestrial area of the State that contains physical remains of human occupation. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade. Such sites may be identified by Natural heritage data from the State Historic Preservation Office. Proposed treatments in this compartment will be implemented in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of these sites. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, no further detail about location is available.

SCA
A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210.
