2) How effective is the combination of your main product with ancillary texts?

Digipak – Panel 1

• My front panel links visually and thematically with my music video; this is because the production focuses on the friendship between Jill and Joel and I consider the image I used to capture this – it shows a strong connection between the two performers illustrated by their facial expressions and body language.

• Additionally, the location of this photo is one of the locations we used to film. Therefore the target audience will be able to identify with the place. This image includes visual references such as cultural references – representing Norwich City, where the music video was filmed and also is representing Britishness.

• Furthermore, the middle panels are close up images of the two performers. This links generically with the music video as many indie pop artists use close ups in there music videos. For example, in Lorde’s video ‘Royals’ there is a close up shot of her. This is a similar image as to what is used on her album cover ‘Pure Heroine’. Close ups are a part of Goodwin’s theories.

Panel 4

• For the back panel I chose to use a black and white image as it is ambiguous compared with the rest of digipak, therefore it makes it more intriguing and persuades the target audience to buy it. The ambiguity links visually with my music video as it begins with a black and white visual of Jill and Joel (the actors/performers) walking past each other and then flashes back into a montage of happy memories but ends with black and white close ups of each performers faces looking back at each other. Thus, the audience can come up with their own interpretations of what happened between Jill and Joel.

• The last panel of my digipak represents the theme of nostalgia which is illustrated in the music video, when Jill and Joel bump into each other and it appears they don’t know each other anymore.

• Additionally, it could relate generically as some indie pop artists choose to use dark images within their music videos. For instance, the band ‘Foster the People’ uses a darker colour/tone within their music video ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ in contrast to also incorporating bright colours within the production.

• Overall, my first panel indicates a care free friendship; this is demonstrated by the montage of flashbacks – memories, in my music video. Alternatively, my back panel reveals more of a melancholic tone. Therefore, referencing a flashback on my front panel and a return to real time on panel 4 in my digipak exposes the narrative structure of my music video.

Section 2: Magazine Advert

My Advertisement

Screenshots from my music video:

• The image I used for my magazine advert, again I believe portrays their strong friendship which is demonstrated through the flashback/montage of memories Jill and Joel had displayed in my music video. The music video and poster both indicate they enjoy spending time together. – as highlighted in the screenshots from my music video. Therefore, the advert links visually with my music video. This image can be associated with my music video and also the digipak. Also, it shows a running theme of friendship is applied throughout my productions.

• Furthermore, again this image was taken in the same location (Mousehold) as used in the music video and in the digipak. This location is where we captured the strongest camera shots. Therefore, I thought it would be appropriate to use and would also appeal more to the target audience. Also, the location represents freedom.

• Therefore, the magazine advert emphasises the concept of a care free/happy friendship which is illustrated in both the music video and digipak.

• As well as promoting the artist ‘AnxiousAlibi’ in the music video, by including his name at the end and making the text bigger than the track title to signify the artist was more important than the song, the advert allowed me to promote him further by using a Facebook link to his actual page. This will update fans about what he is currently doing and any events coming up. Also, the use of star ratings may encourage the audience to buy the album and listen to the track.
