When the Lansing Chamber o Commerce held itsrst Annual Dinner on January 15, 1912, it wasdesigned to combine the business o the Chamberand an evening o socializing. A century later, 800business leaders gathered in the Lansing Centeron February 22, 2012, to celebrate the 100th
Annual Dinner. The mission o the Annual Dinnerand the Chamber, ormed in 1901, has remainedpretty much the same.
For 110 years, the Chamber has been dedicatedto helping employers and businesses in the regiongrow, said 2012 Chamber Board chair NancyMcKeague. As the years have passed, one thingthat has never waivered has been the role o theChamber in economic growth and job creation inour community.
The 100th Annual Dinner was rich in history, in-cluding attendance at the event by 12 past boardchairs, historical photos, videos and a commem-orative program.
As has been the tradition or100 years, a highlight o theevening was the recognitiono excellence in the businesscommunity, with the award-ing o the Community Service,Outstanding Small Business
and Legacy awards.

expecting one or two tables o people to show upat a local restaurant. Much to his surprise, 250people showed up and went out in the communityto do nice things or others.
Bob and his riends have since had 10 similarevents. 300 were involved with the most recent
gathering in February, now known as ePIphany-Now.
People divided up into 40 teams and perormedsuch acts as buying fowers and giving them tohospital nurses, shoveling snow, visiting elderlypeople, buying gasoline and paying or parking, said Homan
Bob Homan is the public relations manager atthe Wharton Center or Perorming Arts. He has a

Bekum America Corporation is the rst companyin the Lansing region to take advantage o a Stateo Michigan export initiative, and the result couldmean a signicant international market expansionor the company. The Williamston-based manu-acturer o blow molding machinery has beenseeking an entrance into the India marketplace,
which had proven to be a challenge. A visit byrepresentatives o the Michigan State Trade andExport Promotion Program (STEP) helped Bekumdown the path to opening a promising new traderelationship.
The amount o inormation they (STEP) presented
was almost mind boggling, said Steve London,Bekums Chie Operating Ocer. That rst meet-ing certainly got us excited.
The Michigan STEP program is designed to spurjob creation by empowering Michigan small andmedium-sized enterprises to export their products.STEP provides direct reimbursements to qualiedsmall and medium-sized export companies todevelop or expand export-related activities. STEPunds can be approved or export marketing-relat-ed activities.
By working with STEP, Bekum was able to securea grant that covered up to hal o its expenses toattend PLASTINDIA, the third largest plastics showin the world..
I was amazed by the speed and the number omeetings which took place, as well as the needor high quality manuacturing equipment in In-dia, said London.
London met with a number o companies that arein need o the type o machinery manuactured atBekums 115,000-square-oot-acility which cancreate packaging or household goods products. There are several ollow-up meetings scheduled
as a result o the time in India, and Bekum alsohas been receiving requests rom Indian compa-nies or machinery quotes. It credits the STEP pro-
gram or assisting in the India project with valu-able counseling and guidance.
The grant application process assisted Bekum todevelop a solid plan with clear goals or Bekumto realize and enjoy success in the India market-place, said London.
The Lansing Regional Chamber o Commerce iscoordinating local STEP eorts as host o STEPsCentral Michigan Regional Export Network (REN),
which consists o 18 counties: Ingham, Eaton,Clinton, Clare, Isabella, Gratiot, Midland, Sagi-
naw, Shiawassee, Arenac, Bay, Genesee, Tus-cola, Lapeer, Huron, Sanilac and St, Clair. LRCCsrole is to coordinate communication with clientcompanies or training, development o exportroadmaps and plans, and connections to publicand private service providers involved in globaltrade.
London has a helpul suggestion to companiestaking a look at the STEP program:
Get engaged early. STEP has a tremendousamount o resources which help companies toexport their products.

The Capital Region International Airports PortLansing Global Logistics Centre has been grantedNext Michigan status by the Michigan EconomicDevelopment Corporation (MEDC) Strategic Fund, meaning the Lansing airport is currently the onlyairport region outside o Detroit to receive the spe-cial tax development incentive status.
The Next Michigan designation provides accessto signicant state tax incentive opportunities toassist the Capital Region Airport Authority in re-cruiting businesses that create new jobs in theMid-Michigan area.
This Next Michigan designation is an important
new development tool or our region, said Rob-
ert Selig, Executive Director o the Capital Region
Airport Authority. The Capital Region Airport Au-
thority has invested over $25 million in airportacilities and services in recent years, all ocused
investments that prepare our airport to make Mid-
Michigan more competitive in global trade devel-
opment. The new tax incentives were granted by
the state because o the cooperative eort made
by regional leaders.
Capital Region International Airport Granted Next Michigan Status by MEDC
In the application or Next Michigan status, the
region estimated that a ully developed Port Lan-
sing Michigan Development District could create2,530,836 square eet o new building space,
expand the taxable value o property (currentlynot on tax rolls) in the City o Lansing and DeWittTownship by $190 million, and generate $9.5million in additional tax dollars to the cooperatingcommunities. The total economic impact to theregion could increase by $126 million over thenext 15-20 years, and stimulate the creation o1,575 new jobs in the area.
