Humidification
Humidification is the artificial regulation ofhumidity in home environments, industrial
environments, and health care applications such asartificial respiration.

HumidificationTo be comfortable, people require a certain amount of
ambient humidity -- not too high, and not too low.
Adequate humidification in a manufacturingenvironment stabilizes moisture in wood, paper, and
textiles.
In all environments, humidification reduces fire riskand while making the area feel comfortable.

Humidification Terms
Absolute humidification is expressed in grams ofmoisture per cubic volume of air
Relative humidification is expressed as a ratio betweenthe amount of moisture currently in the air and the
maximum moisture the air could hold beforecondensation occurs

Comfortable Range
A typical comfortable level of relative humidification is
between 35% and 50%. Excess humidity can cause thegrowth of mold or fungus. Too little humidity can
cause static discharge or the accumulation ofunwanted dust, contributing to allergies.

Humidity
Humidityis the amount of water vapor in the air.
Humidity indicates the likelihood of precipitation, dew,or fog. High humidity makes people feel hotter outside
in the summer because it reduces the effectiveness
of sweating to cool the body by reducingthe evaporation of perspiration from the skin.

Absolute Humidity
Absolute humidity is the quantity of water vapor in a
given volume of air, expressed by weightThe most common units are grams per cubic meter
y More technically, absolute humidity on a volume basisis the mass of dissolved water vapor, mw, per cubic
meter of total moist air, Vnet:yAbsolute humidity ranges from 0 grams per cubic
meter in dry air to 30 grams per cubic meter when thevapor is saturated at 30 C

SpecificHumidity
Absolute Humidity
Specific humidity is a ratio of weight quantities of water
vapor to dry air, such as 1:200, for example.
Relative humidity is the percentage of water vapor inhow much of it the air, in its current condition of
temperature and pressure, can possibly hold

y Most popular type thatproduces cool mist
y Water blown through wet pador filter through fan
y Dust and bacteria getstrapped on the filter
y
Energy efficienty Keeps germs and dirt from
the environment air
y However needs periodicallycleaning
y Also release cool mist
yUtilizes fan to blow waterthrough a diffuser to producefine droplets
y No filter is used

Comparison ofhumidifier
Humidifier Vaporizer
y Humidifiers are actually
machines, that are used tomoisten or humidify the airin the house.
y These are normally used incooler climates, when due to
the usage of heater, the air inthe house becomes too dryfor comfort and also, itbecomes very difficult tobreathe.
y Vaporizers also help in
moistening the dry air in thehouse, but vaporizers realizehot vapor into the air
y Vaporizers heat the water andthen release vapors. On the
other hand, humidifiersrelease cool moisture dropletsinto the air

Humidifier Vaporizer
y Humidifiers emits cold
vaporsy humidifier disperses the
harmful natural minerals intothe air
y Whereas on the other hand,
there are chances of mold orbacteria growing
y Vaporizers emits hot vapors
yvaporizer always has warm orboiling water in it
y vaporizers however, thesenatural minerals aredeactivated
y vaporizer kills bacterias andthere is no growth of mold, asboiling of the water kills thebacterias

Working principle
The humidifier is a flow-through type
where the water flows through the humidifier and drains
out; or it may be a reservoir type which uses areservoir of water and a rotating drum to introduce themoisture necessary for humidified air.
-

31/49
Working principle
Flow-through humidifiers may be mounted to the airreturn duct and connect to the hot air supply off the
furnace by using a humidifier supplytakeoffductThe supply takeoff bypass duct diverts some heated airto the humidifier by taking advantage of a naturalpressure differential between the supply and returnsides of the furnace
The warm air absorbs moisture from the evaporator padinside the humidifier and returns to the warm airstream through the cold air return duct and furnace.

Components.Contd.
y Water Tap / SupplyLine:A water supply line for thehumidifier is tapped into an existing water pipe source.
y Water Inlet Orifice: The orifice reduces the water flow to
the humidifier inlet valve for economy.y Water Inlet Valve: This valve allows water to flow to the
humidifier based on demand. The valve is usuallyelectrically controlled by a solenoid controlled by thehumidistat. The solenoid is usually low voltage powered by
a transformer mounted to the furnace.y Water Feed Tube: Distributes water to the distribution
trough under the top cover and feeds water to theevaporator pad.

Components.Contd.
y Evaporator Pad (media): This is the water collectionmedium that holds the water briefly as it is evaporated
to create humidified air.y Drain Pan: Water flows through the evaporator pad
and into the drain pan where it then flows into ahousehold drain.
y AirD
amper /AirDuct: Some models have an air ductfrom the hot air side that supplies air to the humidifier
mounted on the cold air return. If the home hascentral air conditioning, then a damper is required.

Components ater tap
y First things first and thehumidifier needs water. This will be provided bytapping into an existingcold water supply lineclose to the humidifier.Once tapped, the
flexible copper water linewill run to thehumidifier.

Components
Water Inlet valve assemblythewater supplyflow
needs to be controlled.
This is done by awater inletorifice andan inlet valveassemblycontrolled byan electric solenoid.
The solenoid iscontrolled bya humidistat (sort oflike a thermostat forhumidity).
-

37/49
Components
Water Inlet valve assemblyWhen the humidistat says
to increase humidity, thesolenoid opens and
supplies thewater feedtube. When thehumidistat says thehumidity level is good or
when the furnace shutsdown, the solenoid shutsoff, stopping water flowto the humidifier.
-

Components
Inlet feed tube and troughThe water inlet feed tube runs
from the water inlet valve tothe top of the humidifier. Itconnects to the top cover(held in place by knurlednuts) and delivers water to a
water distribution troughlocated directly under the topcover.
The water distribution troughallows the water to flowevenly to all portions of themedium, which in this case isthe evaporator panel.

Components
Evaporator PadThe pad's purpose is to
disperse water evenlywhich facilitatesevaporation and alsocollects any mineraldeposits from the water. After a season of use themetal pad will be coated ina white powder from the
minerals in the water.Although these pads cansometimes be cleaned, it isbest to have them replacedevery heating season.

Components
Drainy With flow-through type
humidifiers, anyunevaporated water from theevaporator pad runs off intothe drain pan and flowsthrough to a household drain.
y This is a key feature of f lowthrough humidifiers, sinceunlike reservoir humidifiers
(ultrasonic or impeller /drum types) where waterstands for a period of time,flow-through humidifiers willnot allow bacteria to develop

Components
Humidistaty The humidistat is like a
thermostat. You set athermostat for a specifictemperature and when that
temperature is reached, thefurnace turns off.y Same with ahumidistat. You set it for adesired humidity level(usually 30% to 45%) and
when the humidifier reachesthat level of humidification, the water supply is turned offby the solenoid water valveassembly.

Benefits ofHumidifier
y Makes air moist, which help relieve cold, cough, fluand hay fever symptoms and keeps lungs more elastic.
y
Susceptibility to infection is reduced drastically, bykeeping the mucus membranes of throat and nasalpassages moist and thus, allowing the tiny hair inboth, to obstruct the dust and bacteria.
y
Relieves and prevents dry, scratchy skin and lips.

Benefits ofHumidifier
y Reduces static electricity, thus prevents tiny shocksreceived from touching people and certain objects. Theproblem of static electricity occurs generally in winters,
when the air is dry. It can be very annoying, when it chargesdoorknobs and metallic furniture. Static electricity candamage electronic appliances too.
y Helps prevent wooden floor from buckling and separating
by hydrating. It keeps the furniture in good shape as well.y Improves the atmosphere and air quality in home, thus
moisturizing the respiratory system, which is beneficial forasthma sufferers.

Selection ofthe humidifier
y Size ofthe Humidifier
If you want to humidify your entire home you maywant to consider a whole house humidifier as this willlikely be the easiest solution. But if you live in anapartment or if you only want to use it in certain rooms
you should consider a portable humidifier. You can
either move it around from room to room, whereveryou need it, or you can get a couple to keep in the mainrooms of concern.

Selection ofthe humidifier
y Type ofHumidifier
There are two basic types of humidifiers, warm misthumidifiers and cool mist humidifiers. Warm misthumidifiers heat the water which kills bacteria andprovides a warm mist. These units typically don't use afilter because of the heat. They can also warm the air a
bit so they are better either during the cold months orin a cooler climate.

y Cleaning and Maintenance
Before you choose a humidifier it is good to know what
type of cleaning and maintenance will be involvedwith it. The quality and mineral content of your watermay impact the level of necessary cleaning for the unitto run properly for a long time.
Some units require a cleaning every couple of days orevery week. Some units use humidifier filters to helpcontrol mineral build up and bacterial growth.

Selection ofthe humidifier
y HumidityControl
Humidity levels around 45 percent is best. If thehumidity is too low it can cause issues, but if thehumidity level is too high it can also cause problems. Some humidifiers come with a built-in humidstat tohelp control the humidity level in your home, keeping
it at an ideal level.

y Noise Level
For some people the noise level isn't a big issue but forothers it may be, especially if it will be used in thebedroom during the night. All units will make a littlesound, but ultrasonic and warm mist humidifiers aregenerally quieter than an evaporative humidifier
because of the fan it uses. Read reviews and look forone that lists low noise if this may be of concern.
