Dear Colleague,

I’m pleased to present the educational program for the inaugural 2013 ACMS Regional Meeting in beautiful San Diego, California.

The program is carefully designed to provide practical and broad knowledge to enhance your practice of Mohs surgery and cutaneous oncology, in a more intimate, problem-based, discussion-oriented atmosphere. The regional meeting is constructed to touch on similar overarching educational topics as the annual meetings but provide it in a different setting.

In addition to our great ACMS-member speakers, guest panelists from the disciplines of dermatopathology and radiation oncology will address us during certain sessions:

Saturday Dr. Prabhakar Tripuraneni, a Radiation Oncologist from Scripps Clinic joins moderators Drs. John Albertini and Fiona Zwald in the session, Practice Gaps in Cutaneous Oncology: Melanoma & SCC. Discussion topics include: Optimal Biopsy Techniques for SCC/MM & Definitions of High Risk SCC, Optimal Imaging Techniques & Adjuvant XRT for High Risk SCC, and SLNBx for SCC & MM: Management of Immunosuppression for High Risk SCC Patients. Dr. Tripuraneni will also join Tumor Board as a guest speaker. You won’t want to miss out on these dynamic sessions.

On Saturday afternoon, guest speaker Michael J. Camilleri, MD, a Dermatopathologist from the Mayo Clinic will join the ACMS again with moderator Dr. Christian Baum in the session, Dermatopathologic Challenges: Difficult Cases from the Mayo Clinic. Always a popular session, this should help enhance our diagnostic skills.

On Sunday afternoon, Get Your MOC Here! Maintenance of Certification for Skin Cancer, moderated by Dr. Matthew Mahlberg, will define the appropriate work-up and management for patients with certain types or risk factors for skin cancer, identify appropriate surgical and pharmacologic management options for patients with skin cancer, as well as allow participants to claim Maintenance of Certification credits for attending.

Special thanks to the Regional Meeting Committee members, Drs. John Albertini, Scott Fosko, J. Ramsey Mellette, and Chris Miller for their valuable insights and hard work planning this dynamic program. Also, thank you to Drs. Marc Brown and Fiona Zwald for their vision and dedication in establishing the ACMS Regional Meeting.

Dear ACMS Member,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I welcome you to the inaugural Regional Meeting of the American College of Mohs Surgery.

I hope you have been looking forward to this week as much as I; to join with colleagues to learn and share with one another for the benefit of our patients in a thought-provoking, collaborative setting. My sincere hope is that you are able to take much away from this meeting, which will resonate long after in your own practice.

Being in beautiful Coronado Bay, you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to see and experience the area. Loews, our host hotel, is located a short distance from downtown Coronado and offers free shuttle service (page 10) and numerous recreational options including golfing, tennis and biking for your enjoyment. This is an ideal location to relax and enjoy some time “outside of the classroom” with your colleagues, including morning yoga with ACMS (see details on page 10)! Stop by and visit our great exhibitors located in the plenary foyer during the meeting.

Learning ObjectivesUpon completion of the Regional Meeting, participants should be able to describe the latest advances in the treatment of skin cancer, discuss recent research findings in the area of Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology, and explain new techniques in reconstruction that promote optimal surgical outcomes.

Specific learning objectives, upon completion of the ACMS Regional Meeting include:

• Identify critical anatomic landmarks and structures that impact tumor excision, functional and cosmetic reconstruction of the nose, eyelids, ears, lips, face, genitalia, extremities and nails/digits;

• Compare current reconstructive outcomes and techniques with experienced master surgeons to critically analyze and improve their cosmetic and functional results;

• Incorporate new and established surgical procedures to reconstruct Mohs defects of the nose, eyelids, ears, lips, face, scalp, extremities and nails/digits;

• Identify the histologic features and hallmarks of various cutaneous malignancies, from common to rare;

• Identify the standard of care treatment for difficult/high-risk cutaneous tumors as well as interdisciplinary approaches to treatments and the prognostic characteristics of the tumor;

• Identify how patient characteristics (particularly immunosuppression) change appropriate treatment regimens;

• Recognize the importance of mitoses and other negative histologic features in melanoma staging and prognosis;

• Incorporate the new staging system for melanoma including sentinel lymph node status into patient counseling and therapy;

• Incorporate the new staging system for squamous cell carcinoma including biopsy technique, Breslow thickness, and the possibility of sentinel lymph node biopsy/status into patient counseling and therapy;

• Identify diagnostic and technical challenges in dermatopathology associated with Mohs micrographic surgery;

• Prevent, recognize, and treat surgical complications;

• Distinguish the more rare but complex and sometimes devastating complications associated with cutaneous surgery and particularly advanced reconstruction.
