OurGraduateProgramLaunchedinthefallof2007,ourprogramoffersstudentstheopportunitytostudyineitherClinicalPsychologyorPsychologicalScience.Ryerson'sgraduateprograminPsychologicalScienceoffersaninnovativecurriculumthatcombinestraininginbasicandappliedresearch.TrainedandrecruitedfromtopuniversitiesinCanada,theUnitedStates,andaroundtheworld,thecorefacultybringarigorousandstudent-centeredapproachtoscientifictraining.Basedinadepartmentknownforitsexperientialandcareer-focusedlearning,theprogramtakesadvantageofitsdowntownTorontolocationthatincludesproximitytomajorsitesforpracticumtrainingandcollaborativeresearch,andoffersstudentsaccesstoworld-classtrainingopportunities.Eachyear,thegraduateprogramreceivesapproximately250applicationsfor16spots(8PsychologicalScience,8Clinical).Wehaveadiversestudentbody.Ourcurrentstudentsrangeinagefrom21to43yearsold.Approximately87%arefemaleand13%aremale.Twenty-sevenpercent(27%)self-identifyasdiverse(e.g.,mentalorphysicaldisability,LGBTQ,visibleminority).MoststudentsidentifytheirbackgroundasEuropean;however15%reportanAsianbackground(e.g.,MiddleEast,EastAsia,SouthAsia,SouthEastAsia),and1%reportamixedbackground.OurstudentshailfromtopuniversitiesacrossCanada,andbringwiththemadiversityofresearchbackgrounds.

PsychologicalScienceMissionStatementThePsychologicalScienceprogramoperatesundertheoverallmissionofRyersonUniversity:ThespecialmissionofRyersonUniversityistheadvancementofappliedknowledgeandresearchtoaddresssocietalneed,andtheprovisionofprogramsofstudythatprovideabalancebetweentheoryandapplicationandthatpreparestudentsforcareersinprofessionalandquasi-professionalfields.Asaleadingcentreforappliededucation,Ryersonisrecognizedfortheexcellenceofitsteaching,therelevanceofitscurriculum,thesuccessofitsstudentsinachievingtheiracademicandcareerobjectives,thequalityofitsscholarship,researchandcreativeactivity,anditscommitmenttoaccessibility,lifelonglearning,andinvolvementinthebroadercommunity.ThemissionofourgraduateprograminPsychologicalScienceisconsistentwiththemissionofRyersonUniversityinitsemphasison(1)theintegrationofbasicandappliedknowledge;and(2)knowledgetranslationanddissemination,strikingabalancebetweentheoryandapplication.

Once logged on, click the Options tab at the top of the window.

Click on the Settings tab to the left. Once at the settings window, turn on the checkboxes for “Enable Forwarding” and “Don’t leave copy on server”. Then type in your new Psychology email address, which will be in the following format:

ComprehensivePaperRequirementOverviewStudentswillberequiredtodevelopanoriginalresearchquestionthattheywilladdressviaatheoreticalpaper.Theformatofthepapershouldbemodeledafterarticlespublishedintop-tierpsychologyjournalsthatpublishreviewarticles.InordertomeettheComprehensivePaperRequirement,studentswillberequiredtogowellbeyonda“standard”reviewoftheliteraturetoaddresstheresearchquestion.Forexample,studentsmay:

• Offeracritiqueofaleadingtheory• Reviseanexistingtheory• Conductacomprehensivereviewthatintegratesexistingliteraturesinnewwaysor

answersimportantquestionsthathavenotbeenaddressedbeforeintheliterature• Critiqueanexistingmethodologywithproposalsforinnovation

AlthoughstudentswillnotberequiredtosubmittheirpaperforpublicationinordertopasstheComprehensiveRequirement,thepaperwillbeevaluatedforitspotentialtomakeacontributiontotheliterature,thoughnotnecessarilyinatop-tierjournal.Inordertomeetthebreadthrequirement,thetopicforthepapermustnotoverlapsubstantiallywiththestudent’sdoctoralthesisresearchorMAthesisresearch.Inaddition,thecontentofthepapershouldnotoverlapsubstantiallywithpaperssubmittedaspartofgraduatecoursework.Thepapermayrelatetoresearchconductedinothercontexts(e.g.,aresearchpracticum).TopicsmustbeapprovedbytheComprehensiveRequirementCoordinatorandbythestudent’sComprehensiveRequirementCommitteebeforeanyworkisundertaken.Paperswilltypicallyrangeinlengthfrom35to40pages(double-spaced)beforereferences,tables,figures,andillustrations,thoughthespecificlengthandscopeofthepaperwillbedeterminedbythestudent’sComprehensiveRequirementCommittee.AllarticlesshouldbepreparedaccordingtoguidelinesinthecurrentAPAPublicationManual.Asthisisindependentworktowardsdegreerequirements,assistancewiththepreparationofthepaperinanyformmustbeacknowledgedandapprovedbytheComprehensiveRequirementCommitteeandtheComprehensiveRequirementCoordinatorinadvance.Process1. 4. Tracksubmissionsandadherencetodeadlinesandwillberesponsibleforwrittennoticesofanydeviationfromdatesoutlinedinthispolicy.

ComprehensiveRequirementCommitteeEachstudentwillhaveacommitteethatconsistsoftworeaders.ReaderstypicallywillbemembersofYSGS(eitherfull-timefacultyoradjunctfaculty)butinexceptionalcircumstancesotherreadersmaybeapprovedbytheComprehensiveRequirementCoordinator.Atleastonememberofthecommitteemustbeafull-timememberoftheDepartmentofPsychology.InconsultationwiththeComprehensiveRequirementCoordinator,eachstudentwillsuggestpossiblereaders.TheCoordinatormayalsooffersuggestionsforreaders.TheCoordinatorwillmakethefinaldecisionintheselectionofCommitteemembers,andwillcontactpotentialreaderstoaskiftheywouldbewillingtoserveoncommittees(studentsmayalsocontactpotentialreaders,ifdelegatedbythecoordinatortodoso).

STUDENTAPPEALS,COMPLAINTS,ORCONCERNSAllstudentshavetherighttoappealtheirfinalgrades,academicstanding,orboth.TheProgram’sappealpolicyisoutlinedinPolicy152ofRyerson’sAcademicSenate,whichcanbefoundathttp://www.ryerson.ca/senate/policies/pol152.pdfandAppendixK.Policy152detailstheproceduresforgraduatestudentswhowishtoinitiateanappealconcerningeitheracoursegradeoracademicstanding.Acceptablegroundsforappealingacoursegradeinclude:(a)prejudice;(2)medical;(3)compassionate;(4)coursemanagement;and(5)proceduralerror.Ifastudentwishestoinitiateanappealbasedonclaimsofprejudice,thestudentmustconsulttheDiscriminationandHarassmentPreventionOffice.TheOfficewilldoanassessmentandmakearecommendationtotheGraduateProgramDirectorbeforetheappealproceeds.TheOfficewillalsodeterminewhethertherearesufficientgroundsforanappeal.Ifitisdeterminedthatthereareinsufficientgrounds,theappealmaygoforwardonthegroundsofCourseManagement.AcademicAppealsmaybemadeatthreelevels:theprogramlevel,theYeatesSchoolofGraduateStudieslevel,andtheSenatelevel(i.e.,totheSenateAppealsCommittee).ThePolicyoutlinesforstudentstheprocessforinitiatinganappealateachlevel,directsstudentstowheretheywillfindtheparticularformsandinstructionsforeachlevel,thedeadlinesformakinganappeal,andtheprocessbywhichthedecisionismadeandcommunicatedtothestudent.Ifastudentwishestoappealagrade,s/heshouldfirstspeakwiththeinstructorinformallytoattempttoresolvetheissue.Thisshouldbedoneassoonaspossibleafterthecircumstancesarise.However,theremaybesomesituationsinwhichthestudentisnotabletodiscussthematterwiththeinstructor,inwhichcase,thestudentwouldspeakwiththeGraduateProgramDirector.If,afterspeakingwiththeinstructor,theissueisnotresolved,thestudentwouldbringthemattertotheGraduateProgramDirectorforassistanceifs/hewishestopursuethematterfurtherbeforeinitiatingaformalappeal.Theprogrammustrespondtothestudentwithin10workingdaysofreceiptoftheappealwhethertheappealwasgrantedordenied(inwholeorinpart).Iftheissueisnotresolvedattheprogramlevel,thestudentmayfileanappealwiththeYeatesSchoolofGraduateStudies.Thisshouldbedonewithin10workingdaysofreceivingthedecisionattheProgramlevel.TheAssistantRegistrar,GraduateStudies,willthenforwardtheappealtotherespondent,whohas5daystorespond.AHearingPaneloftheYeatesSchoolofGraduateStudiesAppealsCommitteewillbeestablishedtoreviewthematerial,heartheappeal,makeadecision,andcommunicatethedecisiontothestudentinwriting,statingclearlythebasisonwhichthedecisionwasreached.Atthislevel,thestudentmaybringonerepresentativeoradvocate,includinglegalcounsel.IfthestudentwishestomakeanappealtotheSenatelevel,thestudentmustsubmittheappealtotheSecretaryofSenatewithin10workingdaysofreceiptoftheYeatesSchoolofGraduateStudies-levelresponse.TheSecretaryofSenatewillestablishaPaneloftheSenateAppeals

REMEDIATIONTRAININGPLANS

Themajorityofstudentdifficultiesaremanagedonaninformalbasis.TheProgressReportFormisjointlycompletedbetweeneachgraduatestudentandthestudent’sprimaryresearchsupervisorthreetimeseachyeartoreportonprogressintheareasofresearch,coursework,practica,andprofessionaldevelopment.Inaddition,practicumsupervisorscompletetheEvaluationofPracticumStudentFormattheendofeachpracticum.Theseformsaresignedbythestudent,thestudent’sresearch/practicumsupervisor,andtheDirectorofPsychologicalScienceTraining,andserveasformalmeansoffeedbacktostudentsaboutanyconcernsabouttheirperformance.Thesemethodsincluderecommendationstoaddressanyoutstandingissuesoverthereportingperiod.Forexample,asupervisingfacultymembermayrequestthatthestudentreduceproblembehaviours(e.g.,notmeetingdeadlines)orincreasedesirablebehaviours(e.g.,schedulingtimetowriteupthethesis),andprovidespecificremediesorsuggestionstocorrectanyissues.Atimelineforcorrectinganyproblemsalsoisprovided.ItisexpectedthatanyissueraisedinaprogressreportwouldalsohavebeendiscussedwiththestudentpriortotheseformalmethodsoffeedbacksothatthestudentisawareofandfullyinformedoftheProgram’sconcerns.Iftheseinformalmethodsofperformanceappraisaldonotleadtoimprovementsinthegivenproblemarea(s),oraproblemisofamoreacuteorseriousnature,amoreformalprocedureisimplementedtoaddresstheconcern.Thefirststepindevelopingaremediationplanistoidentifyanddefinethemoreseriousorongoingproblematicbehaviour.Theseproblematicbehavioursareonesthatinterferewiththestudent’sprofessionalfunctioningandmayinvolve:

• Aninabilityorunwillingnesstoacquireandintegrateprofessionalstandardsintoone'srepertoireofacademicorprofessionalbehaviour

• Aninabilitytoacquireacademicorprofessionalskillsinordertoreachanacceptablelevelofcompetency

Studentsmayexhibitbehaviours,attitudes,orcharacteristicsthat,whileofconcernandrequireremediation,arenotunexpectedorexcessiveforstudentsinagraduateprogram.Problemstypicallybecomeidentifiedwhentheyincludeoneormoreofthefollowingcharacteristics:

TheRyersonUniversityCodeofAcademicConductappliestotheacademicactivities,bothonandoffcampus,ofallstudents(graduate,undergraduateandcontinuingeducation)enrolledincoursesattheUniversity.Ryersonstudentsareresponsibleforfamiliarizingthemselveswiththispolicy.TheRyersonUniversityCodeofAcademicConductdefinesacademicmisconduct,theprocessestheUniversitywillfollowwhenacademicmisconductissuspected,andtheconsequencesthatcanbeimposedifstudentsarefoundtobeguiltyofmisconduct.
