Welcome to the Financial Services sector: graduate and placement opportunities 2012

Careers, Employability and Skills (CES) have put together this resource to encourage students to engage with the early applications required for graduates and placement opportunities in the Financial Services sector.

Each section provides an illustration of organisations who work closely with CES and contributed information before the print run. For additional organisations students should regularly monitor opportunities added to the CES online vacancy database at www.qub.ac.uk/careers and also go directly to organisations’ own websites.

Some of these organisations will be attending the Administration, Finance & Management Fair, Tuesday 25 October 2011, 11am – 3pm, Whitla Hall.

Recruitment Process

Many organisations in the Financial Services sector start the recruitment process a year in advance of the graduate start date. From as early as August, organisations will advertise opportunities on their website and ‘be open’ to receive applications for next summer/autumn start.

What is the NI Accountancy Milkround? The Northern Ireland Accountancy Milkround is the recruitment term for the process of advertising and selecting graduates into training contracts supported by Chartered Accountants Ireland Ulster Society (www.charteredaccountants.ie). The NI organisations who participate in this milkround have all agreed to the process defined in the Graduate Recruitment - Code of Practice 2011 (see Resources section).

Additional Chartered Accountant Ireland training contracts for NI are advertised after the NI Milkround has taken place and many of these vacancies will appear on the CES website from February. The NI Milkround should not be confused with the Milkround.com student website. Students from any degree discipline can apply for an accountancy training contract. A CES preparation workshop will be available to students on Tuesday 4 October 2011, 4-6pm in the Student Guidance Centre. To reserve a place on the workshop go to the Events section of the CES website www.qub.ac.uk/careers

Training Contracts Great Britain and Republic Of IrelandMany organisations have ongoing year round recruitment however early application is advised. Check organisations and professional bodies websites for up-to-date vacancy information. See Resources section for Professional Accountancy publications and websites.

APPLY ONLINE

The opportunities included are merely a ‘snap-shot’ sample of the current vacancies which are already available online for you

to start applying to. Many more opportunities will come online throughout the year and it is important for you to regularly

check the websites of those companies you are most interested in. Careers, Employability and Skills maintain a database of

vacancies across the UK, Ireland and further afield. To access these vacancies visit the CES website www.qub.ac.uk/careers

Vacancies database. There are also various directories of graduate recruiters available in Careers and Employability Information Area

in the Student Guidance Centre

EARLY APPLICATIONS AND CLOSING DATES

Be careful not to miss out on some very early closing dates.

Note: Friday 28 October is the closing date for the Northern Ireland Chartered Accountancy Milkround and there are some even

earlier deadlines for similar opportunities in the Republic of Ireland.

Even though some organisations will not specify a closing date it is recommended to apply early. Applications will be processed

on an ongoing basis and the limited places will be allocated to successful candidates which means you could visit the

website at any time and find that no further applications can be accepted.

BDO - GBwww.bdo.co.uk/graduates

Not all big accountancy firms are the same. At BDO we’re building a strikingly different business, focused on exceptional client service. We employ exceptional people – and help them get on with the job, without needless bureaucracy. Our systems work to support our people, not the other way around. We’re looking for graduates who don’t fit the conventional accountancy mould. Talented people with the imagination and initiative to make a real difference – to be the difference that matters so much to our clients. We don’t want clones. Our people are diverse as our clients. We want individuals who can think for themselves, appreciate and respect people whoever they are, build relationships and take personal responsibility. Our training is as exceptional and individual as the people we recruit. Most study for the ACA, but we also offer routes to other professional qualifications. Training is tailored their needs and centred on first-hand experience. That’s why they get such excellent results. We offer opportunities in a range of exciting areas from tax to forensic services, with the chance to take real responsibility on projects alongside partners and colleagues. Refreshingly, our partners are known for their hands-on involvements, and mutual support is an essential part of our culture. Bank of Englandwww.bankofengland.co.uk

The Bank of England exists to ensure monetary stability and to contribute to financial stability. We are involved in a range of high-profile and complex activities – from setting interest rates and meeting the liquidity needs of the banking system, to managing the circulation of notes and mitigating threats to the whole financial system.

Because our work is demanding, we look for people with high levels of intellectual ability. However, not everyone has a background in economics, because the most important requirement for us is strong analytical ability and people at the Bank come from a broad range of academic backgrounds.

Vacancies

Graduate AnalystFew organisations play a more influential role in the UK’s economy than the Bank of England. As the country’s central bank, we are involved in activities that underpin the monetary and financial stability of the country - from setting interest rates, meeting the liquidity needs of the banking system, managing the circulation of notes, to mitigating threats to the whole financial system. Because our work is demanding and often high profile, we look for graduates with high levels of intellectual ability who can also demonstrate strong analytical and numeracy skills. The area of the Bank you will join as a graduate depends on your academic background and skills. Some areas of the Bank require specialist economics or technology knowledge, for example, but others are open to people from a broad range of academic backgrounds - including maths, finance, history, science and engineering subjects.

IT GraduateIf you’re looking for a career with genuine intellectual challenge, here’s your chance to join the high-calibre team that creates business-focused technology solutions for the Bank of England. Supported by the Bank’s award-winning graduate development programme, you’ll be contributing to a wide range of projects as part of our 200-strong Information Systems and Technology Division. It¹s a role that will see you working closely with internal customers across the organisation first gaining in-depth understanding of their often complex business needs, and then developing solutions that meet them as intelligently and effectively as possible.

Summer internships We offer 6-8 week undergraduate internships during the summer for first degree students in their penultimate year. We pay £65 per day for the internship duration. The main focus of your summer will be an individual research project. The range of projects is broad but will involve collecting and analysing data and working closely with economists and analysts. Previous projects have included: the relationship between the housing market and consumption; and alternative trading systems in equity markets. In addition you will have the opportunity to attend a variety of high-profile meetings and you may observe the pre-Monetary Policy Committee and pre-Financial Stability board. Seminars are also often given by prestigious academic speakers.

Postgraduate Sponsorship SchemeWe offer postgraduate internships and sponsorship to students who are looking to undertake postgraduate study in economics and/or finance, before joining the Bank. Students who are successful during the selection process will be offered: a 6-8 week internship during the summer after graduation for which they will be paid £85 per day; and sponsorship of MSc/MPhil fees for 1 year (or 1 year of a 2 year course) in either economics and/or finance, to be studied in the UK. Postgraduate job offers to join the Bank (after completion of postgraduate studies) and payment of £11,250 living expenses (paid in three installments) will be made to outstanding performers at the end of the summer internship. This scheme is subject to a number of conditions.

Entry Requirements

At least 300 UCAS points from three A-levels or equivalent (excluding General Studies). We are happy to accept mitigating circumstances and/or work experience in lieu of UCAS points. It is essential that candidates have, or are expected to achieve, a 2:1 classification. We accept applications from any degree discipline.

GRADUATE RECRUITMENT - CODE OF PRACTICE 2011The Code of Practice has been developed in relation to recruitment of students from The Queen’s University of Belfast and The University of Ulster. The Code is designed to apply to all member firms in Northern Ireland recruiting from these universities. Where necessary, please ensure your respective offices in RoI are aware of the Code. The Code does not apply where students are being recruited from universities outside of Northern Ireland. For the avoidance of any doubt, if your firm is recruiting from the two local universities in the timescale below the Code of Practice applies and therefore the dates below must be adhered to.

TIMESCALENo presentation or encouragement to students should be made prior to the suggested presentation and interview timetable.

Closing date for applications 28 October 2011Interviews and presentations to commence 14 November 2011Closing date for offer acceptance/rejection 2 January 2012Offers to be issued no earlier than 28 November 2011

NORTHERN IRELAND ACCOUNTANCY RECRUITMENT (MILKROUND)It is encouraging to note that there are an increasing number of Member firms (as well as a growing number of other employers) seeking to recruit within the Northern Ireland Accountancy Recruitment “(Milkround)”. As a consequence, instances of students having to decide between two presentations on the one evening have occurred. I would encourage member firms to make their own arrangements as a matter of priority for their presentations and interviews with the careers departments at QUB and UU. Please note the two universities cannot make arrangements until such times as this letter has been issued and firms will be booked in on a first come first e-mail basis. All offers of appointment following the presentation and interview period should give students a minimum of 2 weeks in which to accept or decline the offer and no offer should require a student to accept earlier than 3 January 2012. Where it has been decided not to make an offer to a student, this should be communicated to the student at the same time as offer letters are being issued to other students.

ON-LINE AND DIRECT APPLICATIONSIt is accepted that the on-line method is becoming a more popular form of application. Firms should ensure that procedures are in place to consider on-line and hard copy applications in an equitable manner. Closing dates for all methods should be advertised clearly. Technology should support easy access and use of the on-line method.

RECRUITMENT OTHER THAN DURING THE “MILKROUND”It is open to firms to interview and make offers to students who approach them on an individual basis at any time. Any offers, which arise from such interviews, should also give students a minimum of 2 weeks in which to accept or decline the offer.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIESAll firms should demonstrate commitment to equality of opportunity in employment as required by the Equality Commission and the Commission for Racial Equality.

FORM OF OFFERAll offers of appointment should be made in writing and should clearly state the terms of engagement and any conditions attached to the offer. After an offer has been made, firms should not initiate or encourage any further contact with the students until the offer has been accepted or declined. This includes any correspondence regarding the firm itself, acceptance of the offer or the proposed terms of employment. Students are being advised by the universities to reply promptly to all offers.

An Overview of the Financial Services Sector

Accounting & Financial Management

The BusinessEvery business, whether a huge multinational or one-man band, needs an accountant to ensure all the figures add up. Managing cashflow and monitoring profit and loss are key areas of work, but this is increasingly joined by the supply of financial information thatcould influence the strategic development of organisations.

The jobs‘Accountant’ is the name given to any professional with a relevant, nationally recognised finance qualification. The term ‘financialmanagement’ describes the work carried out by accountants working within a organisation such as a company or the public sector. In small organisations the work is diverse and multi-tasking is essential. In larger organisations there is a greater division of labourproviding the opportunity for specialisation. Training contracts usually last three years and include undertaking professional exams

The employersPublic Practice - firms of accountants, usually run as partnerships, that provide accounting services to many companies and individuals. The Big Four (KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and PWC) are full-service providers with offices throughout GreatBritain, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and beyond. The rest of the market is made up of small and medium-sized firms across the UK and Republic of Ireland that usually specialise in a particular type of work or local area.Commerce & Industry - most organisations employ accountants to carry out day-to-day financial management. Opportunities arenationwide.Public Sector - public sector organisations such as the National Health Service and Inland Revenue need accountants to manage thepublic’s money and invest it in public services. In the UK a cluster of jobs are available at Westminster with other available nationwide

ApplyingAny degree discipline is accepted. You’ll usually need good English and Maths GCSE grades plus an expected honours degree.Traditionally, public practice firms recruit throughout the autumn with someclosing dates in October and interviews in November. This timetable is becoming more flexible with some employers inviting applicationsall year round.

Banking & Investment

The businessThe banking and investment business is all about making money work as hard as possible. It’s borrowed and invested in a whole hostof different ways - the very last thing it’s allowed to do is sit idle. The financial markets are open 24 hours a day, straddle different timezones and have major centres in Hong Kong, New York, London,Tokyo and Frankfurt. London is important because its working daybridges that of America and the Far East.

The jobsThe ‘front office’ refers to the fee-earning areas of the business. Jobs in this area include advising on and implementing ways for clientcompanies to grow, in addition to trading financial products. Support services such as finance, human resources and operations ensurethe right people and the right money are in the right place at the right time. The technology division straddles the whole organisationand provides the infrastructure within which business takes place.

The employersInvestment banks - global firms that carry out the full range of banking and investment services. The biggest players are sometimesknown as ‘bulge bracket’ companies. Specialist finance houses - smaller organisations that specialise in a particular area of work such as corporate finance.investment management eg Fidelity Investments.Employers are often also classified by their country of origin. For instance, ‘American’ banks include Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Citi, while ‘European’ banks include Credit Suisse and Commerzbank

ApplyingTypical entry requirements are A grade GCSE maths, a minimum of 300 UCAS points and at least a predicted 2:1. Completion ofan internship is also rated highly by recruiters. Most employers in this sector use online application systems. They are renowned fortheir early closing application dates.

City Alternatives (Commercial Law, Management Consultants)

The businessHotbed of international finance that it is, the City offers many roles linked directly, or tenuously, to the investment business. Broadareas of work that consume graduates include law, management consulting, property and quantity surveying.

The jobsCommercial lawyers work with the investment bankers to get the best possible deal for their clients and ensure the contract complieswith the appropriate investment-related regulations. To qualify, law graduates are required to complete a one year full-time (or twoyear part-time) legal practice course before starting a two-year training contract. Non-law graduates must also complete a conversioncourse. Management consultants provide organisations with strategies to improve their business. They identify problems then suggestand implement solutions.

The employersLaw - in London the scene is dominated by large firms handling high value, often international, commercial transactions. Further afieldsole practitioners and high street firms handle work for small businesses.Management consulting - employers range from the consultancy divisions of some of the Big Four accountancy firms, to specialist organisationsproviding advice on specific areas, such as strategy or IT.

ApplyingCompetition for management consulting and law is fierce. Both sectors welcome graduates from any degree discipline but you’ll needtop class academic qualifications from a good university, usually at least 300 UCAS points and a 2:1 or first classification.

Insurance and Financial Services

The businessIncludes day-to-day financial management products for individuals, such as bank accounts, loans, pensions, credit cards and insurance. Some products and services, such as insurance and regulation, are also needed by companies. Recently the retail business has focusedon improving accessibility to these products through the internet and over the telephone. Financial regulators ensure a safe and fairservice for all.

The jobsA range of professional roles covering the development, marketing, sales and management of financial products. Actuaries work awayin the background calculating the probability a certain thing will happen so that premiums can be set for insurance-related products. It’s common to work on a specific product (eg credit cards), or in a business management function (eg marketing).

The employersFinancial services providers - big employers offering a range of financial services such as retail banking and savings accounts, etc. tendto be international groups, such as Santander with a network of branches across the UK. Call centres tend to be based on the outskirtsof regional towns and cities.Large international corporates - businesses that have built their name in a different sector but have then diversified into financialservices. Examples include Tesco and Marks & Spencer.Niche firms - offer specialist services such as actuarial consulting, risk management, underwriting and reinsurance. This group ofemployers recruits increasingly larger numbers of graduates particularly in the City.

ApplyingFor the majority of positions applications are welcomed from graduates with a 2:2 or above in any discipline. There is high demand forgraduates to enter a wide range of roles and to train for the appropriate finance qualification.
