Series 3: Writings, 1916-1980
The third series, Writings, consists of 83 folders arranged in four subseries: printed matter;
lectures; categorized sermons; and uncategorized sermons and addresses. Categorized
sermons were originally part of a filing system containing twelve topical groups.
Uncategorized sermons and addresses do not have topical grouping numbers and therefore
are listed by title or original folder designation. Most sermon and address notes are hand-
written outlines, not full-text discourses. All undated sermons and lectures in this series

have been assigned the date range of circa 1920-1970. A searchable, itemized inventory of

Series 4: Data on Methodist Bishops, circa 1810-1985
The fourth series consists of 311 folders containing documents written by and about
Methodist bishops. William C. Martin created this filing system at the beginning of his
episcopal ministry as a resource for studying the lives of Methodist bishops and the roles
that they played in leading the church. To this historical data, Bishop Martin added personal
correspondence with, small publications by, photographs of, news clippings about other
bishops, and five folders of information about himself. In the list that follows, the
parenthetical notes (e.g.- “E 1918”) were copied from the original file folders and indicate
the year in which each man was elected to the office of bishop.
