What ideas did you come up with? Let’s make a list!
One of the most famous sermons that Jesus gave was the Sermon on the
Mount. One day, Jesus saw crowds of people had gathered to hear him, so he
went up a mountain to preach. His disciples came to him and Jesus spoke to
them and to the crowds below.

As well as teaching people through stories called parables, Jesus also gave speeches called sermons to tell people about God. Jesus was a very good teacher and people
travelled from places far away to come and hear him speak.
Let’s have a look at what else Jesus said at the
Sermon on the Mount...

Jesus spoke for a long time. He told the people the right way to approach God and how to treat other people. A lot of the things he said amazed the crowds.
One of the things he taught was that being rich, powerful and famous do not matter to
God. The people who are truly rich are those who are rich in the things that matter to God, such as kindness, compassion and generosity. Jesus taught that it would be
these people who would be blessed by God.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Here, Jesus is saying that those who are meek (which means gentle, patient and ready to forgive others) will be given
everything that they need by God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the
children of God.
This means that people who try to stop arguments and who treat people with understanding will become special people to God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of
righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
When you are persecuted, you are treated badly by other people for what you believe in. Jesus is saying that those who are
treated badly for believing in God will be blessed.

Don’t store up treasures on earth that can rot or be stolen by
thieves, but store up for yourself treasures in heaven.
In those days, people thought being rich was a sign of God’s blessing, but Jesus taught them that it is better to focus on God who is always there rather than on money that can quickly be gone.

You know that you must not murder, but I tell you that you must not even think of hurting others or taking revenge on
someone.
Jesus teaches his followers that your thoughts are as important as your actions. He says that it is just as bad to think about hurting
someone else as it is to actually do it.

Jesus taught many other things at the Sermon on the Mount but his most important message was that Christians should always treat other people as they would want to be treated. This means being kind, helpful and respectful to all people. The other important message was that Christians should always think about God and think about how He
would want them to act.
At the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave his followers a special prayer to pray called the Lord’s Prayer. This prayer would help them to remember what he had
taught them. Most Christians today know this prayer off by heart.

The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our sins, As we forgive those who sin against us, And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.
The Lord’s PrayerOur father in Heaven, We pray your name will always be holy and that what you want will be done here on earth, just like it is in heaven. Give us the food we need for today, And forgive us for all the things we have done wrong, just as we forgive the people who have done bad things to us, Don’t let us be tempted into doing bad things, And protect us from evil,Because the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours forever. Amen.
This is the traditional version.
This is what it means.
