promoting beauty and health from within. The

With the quest ion of a viable industry on

“cal i fornia horse racing is in a most chal lenging

Most racing fans are unaware that west coast

“the racing states in the east are bunched

“We’re going to give direct economic rewards

Spreadingits Wings

By Machel Penn Shull

M ost individuals dream of retir ing at

the age of 60 to 65. However, there

are some enthusiastic vis ionaries

that continue their dreaming and work ethic

later in l i fe with the abil ity of changing the

future and the l ives of those around them.

Carlsbad entrepreneur Ted Vallas fal ls into

the vis ionary category, affecting the l ives of

not only those he knows, but future travelers

in San Diego as well.

In 2012, San Diegans and other neighboring

residents wil l soon have the opportunity of

f lying out of Carlsbad’s McClellan-Palomar

Airport, with even a weekend direct f l ight to

Cabo San Lucas. With only 3 percent of this

airport’s use being employed for commercial

aviation, this wil l increase residents’ choices

Mcclellan-Palomar Airport to offer commercial flight destinations

including Sacramento, San Jose, Oakland, Las vegas, Phoenix and

cabo San Lucas. Kansas city, Missouri. Salt Lake city and Houston are

also scheduled for future availability.

and conveniences in air l ine travel and private

aviation.

Originally chosen to replace the Del Mar

airport in 1959, McClellan-Palomar Airport is

one of busiest s ingle runways in the U.S., with

approximately 200,000 annual operations

– according to Loudairport.com. Currently,

McClellan-Palomar Airport is mainly uti l ized for

privately funded aviation, including general

aviation and fl ight school opportunit ies open

to the public. Many private jet companies

capital ize on the airport’s excellent location,

including the well know Schubach Aviation

Company.

But thanks to Ted Vallas and his vis ionary force

in the aviation world, local residents

that cannot afford to charter a f l ight

wil l now have the option of – at the end

of 2011 – f lying to various commercial

destinations out of Carlsbad. California

Pacif ic Air l ines intends to add six

routes, which include Sacramento, San

Jose, Oakland, Las Vegas, Phoenix and

Cabo San Lucas.

McClellan-Palomar Airport’s General Manager,

Wil l ie Vasquez sees this expansion as a posit ive

one for local residents. “In terms of commercial

aviation, it wil l put some good use to our

terminal. Right now we only have one to Los

Angeles. This wil l give North County residents

the opportunity to f ly to more destinations,

EX

CLU

SIVE

including Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Those fl ights

wil l be offered starting only on the weekends.”

Vasquez also explained that the airport has

been receiving quite a few calls with interest in

when this wil l be happening, asking “Are they

ready to go, yet?”

Within f ive years, California Pacif ic Air l ines’

plan is to expand these destinations to at

least 10 cit ies that wil l reach into the Midwest

area, including Kansas City, Missouri, Salt

Lake City and Houston – offering residents the

luxury of access to more destinations and the

convenience of a closer airport. According to

CPA, “The new California Pacif ic Air l ines is the

long-held dream of North County entrepreneur,

Ted Vallas, who began his business

career in the 1950s.”

For some of us, dreaming is merely

a thought or a fantasy. But for Ted

Vallas and the Carlsbad community,

dreaming can be the expansion of a

vis ion soon to be realized not only by

Mr. Vallas, but for travelers f lying to

Cabo from North County on a sunny

Saturday morning without the hectic commute

through downtown San Diego or even across

the border. Apparently convient, air travel just

reached new heights. u

THE NEED

More than 300,000 acres of coastal

promontor ies and wetlands have been

preserved along the Cal i fornia coast

to-date; roughly def ining 469 mi les of the 840

spanning the Pacif ic. However, 90 percent of

al l coastal wetlands are forever gone, and only

3.5 percent of the coast has been deemed

as protected reserves; f rom LA to San Diego,

only 25 percent (approx. 15,000 acres) of the

histor ic coastal wetlands present ly remain.

Nonetheless, s ignif icant st r ides for natural

ecological processes have progressed within

the last 50 years; a culmination of efforts

result ing in the continued survival and

comeback of coastal habitat – as nature

intended. The Sur fr ider Foundation alone

has celebrated 150 documented victor ies

nat ionwide between 2006 and 2010 – 33

percent of which occurred in Cal i fornia; these

mi lestones range from coastal preservat ion

and beach access, to water qual i ty and a r ise

above plast ics.

According to the Foundation, “An

environmental v ictory is a decis ion made in

favor of the coastal and ocean environment

that results in a posit ive conservat ion outcome,

improves coastal access, or both.”

THE PLANSur fr ider act ively supports 30 campaigns in

Cal i fornia alone (72 nat ionwide), as ide from

its four main programs: A Rise Above Plast ics,

The Blue Water Task Force, Know Your H2O and

Ocean Fr iendly Gardens. Local act iv ism has

seen such efforts as:

• Unti l a new ordinance is devised, the

Solana Beach chapter was successful in a

Protecting Oceans, Waves and Beaches Since 1984

At their very core, the Surfrider Foundation advocates for coastal preservation. The vision began with three local surfers in Southern California, and has since grown to include more than 100 chapters in 15 countries worldwide.

temporary ban on the construct ion of new

seawal ls , which would have contr ibuted

to addit ional loss of beach along the

adjoining coast l ine.

• “Save Trest les” stopped a proposed tol l

road that would have destroyed the state

park and damaged the sur f .

• New offshore oi l dr i l l ing has been stopped in

the continental U.S. for the next seven years.

In relat ion to this , “Hands Across the Sand”

recently held i ts global in i t iat ive protest ing

new offshore dr i l l ing. In championing clean

energy solut ions for U.S. independence on

foreign oi l , the event was a visual message

of human sol idar i ty to our nat ion’s leaders.

A RISE ABOVE PLASTICSIn an effort to further educate the publ ic

about the harms of plast ic, the Rise Above

Plast ics (RAP) campaign – or iginat ing in San

Diego, the Foundation’s f lagship chapter –

act ively engages local decis ion makers in

pursuing a ban on both s ingle-use shopping

bags and polystyrene takeout containers; not

to mention a reduction on plast ic bott le usage

across the board.

“Central to our campaign is an attempt to

k i l l the demand for non-necessary plast ics at

the source, by encouraging the development

and use of ‘alternat ives’ and reduction of

packaging,” notes the Foundation. “We aim

to transcend the knee-jerk acceptance of

s ingle-use plast ic bott les or ubiquitous plast ic

shopping bags when better robust, reusable

and sustainable options exist .”

The campaign recently created a “Day Without

a Bag” – an annual event that began in 2010 as

a jumpstart to rais ing local awareness. To this

mi l l ion tons of plast ic swir l s , result ing in the death of

countless marine birds and mammals every year.

THE BLuE WATER TASK FORCEAs the Foundation’s most recognizable effort – a

pr imary research and water qual i ty monitor ing program,

The Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) works alongside San

Diego Coastkeepers in implementing a water monitor ing

effort to t imely alert sur fers, beachgoers, and off icials

in local communit ies about health-threatening water

qual i ty problems and to work toward solut ions. The BWTF

is able to measure bacter ia levels at both marine and

freshwater beaches, comparing them to federal water

qual i ty standards establ ished by the EPA to protect

publ ic health in recreational waters.

Just last year, Heal the Bay issued an al l -encompassing

report card for west coast beaches; much of San Diego

received an A+, except for Imperial Beach – as a result

of sewage presence from across the border. With much

success in rais ing publ ic awareness of coastal water

pol lut ion levels, the joint efforts not only issue t imely

advisor ies regarding unsafe condit ions at specif ic sur f

breaks, but have also increase awareness for the health

and safety of sur fers and famil ies, along with the local
