Dear Readers,

As spring arrives in Southern California, we are once again blessed with an abundance

of sunshine and a local landscape that is in full bloom; from the desert and mountain terrain,

to the sun and surf along the coast, we are reminded of why San Diego is our home.

With the New Year well underway, our March issue is aimed at inspiring and

encouraging you to simply live well; from personal fitness to sustainability and social

responsibility, life is lived spherically, and with great purpose.

In looking forward to a full social calendar this season, I’d like to briefly take a moment and thank

our partners, guests and staff for their support at our recent Spring Xposure Fashion Show; benefiting

the San Diego Police Historical Association. The evening was well attended, featuring local fashions

and TV personality Leonard Simpson of Fashion ForwardTM. For upcoming events, check out our

Social Calendar on page 18.

Enjoy!

W ith an ever-present Mediterranean climate

year-round, Southern California’s natural

bounty of fresh fruits and produce is one

of the many luxuries we are afforded. And with an

abundance of local farms, fruit-stands, and farmer’s

markets open on a weekly basis, we enjoy choice pick

when it comes to selection and varieties available for

our menus.

In further exploring our great county, here is a

tour of several great neighborhood finds in terms of

local farms and farmer’s markets. We encourage you

to always shop and eat locally for the finest selections

of fruits, vegetables, meats, flowers and farm goods.

Where were you in 1980? Katie Shull and

Trudy Tunstall were busy launching Lemon Twist

Fruit Stand, which has become a scenic landmark

in Rancho Santa Fe over the last 30 years. With

seasonal produce boasting fresh local strawberries,

organic citrus, tomatoes, floral arrangements and

raw honey, there are many reasons why locals shop

this enchanting fruit-stand and gift shop.

In 2007 Lemon Twist burnt down during the

Witch Creek Fires. However, in 2011, Robin Shull,

son of Katie Shull, launched the business once

again, rebuilding their family’s legacy.

According to robin Shull, “This year is exciting

because we are fully back since the fires and are

excited to serve the community once again as a

local farmer that cares about their customer’s

wants and needs.” Lemon Twist is also a full service

florist, gift shop specializing in gift baskets, candied

popcorn, homemade jams, local olive oil and many

other items that are made locally by farmers in

San Diego. Lemon Twist relocated their ranch to

Pauma Valley after selling the land to Lennar in

2000, now known to us as “The Crosby.”

KEyS CrEEK LAvEnDEr FArMLocation: Valley CenterWeb: keyscreeklavenderfarm.com

Located in valley Center, a mere 40 minutes or

so from Coastal north County, is a breathtaking

lavender farm — Keys Creek Lavender Farm,

previously known as Lavender Fields. Imagine

vibrant fields of lavender spread out over eight

acres of land. You can enjoy a picnic for two in the

midst of this idyllic scenery or high tea to celebrate

spring during the month of March. Interested in

taking a tour? Here are the details:

Q. How does one schedule a tour?

Keys Creek: Keys Creek Lavender Farm offers

both public tours (for families and individuals) and

private tours (for groups). We are committed to

keeping Friday, Saturday and Sunday available for

individuals, couples and families. Public tours are

free of charge and reservations are not required.

Public tours are only available during the bloom

season (May-June) at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on

Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Since we are also a

popular tour group destination, private tours are

offered during the week and must be booked in

advanced.

Q. What can we expect from your tour?

Keys Creek: The tour is led by a docent and

includes a “walk and talk.” The walking tour,

typically 30 to 45 minutes, takes participants along

the eastern side of the property. There they are

able to view the essential oil distillery, see different

varieties of lavender, experience the labyrinth

and mediation garden and finally stop for a bit of

shopping at the farm store. Keys Creek Lavender

Farm is a commercial flower farm and the terrain

can be somewhat challenging. We ask visitors to

wear closed, flat footwear for the tour. We also

recommend bringing water and sun protection.

Finesd.com 27

Q. Are you a private events location?

Keys Creek: Yes! We have recently completed

our private events location. Brides looking for a

picturesque, country setting have really enjoyed

holding their event at our lavender farm. We can

accommodate groups of up to 180.

SiESEL’S OLD FASHiOnED MEATSAnD iOWA MEAT FArMSLocations: San DiegoWeb: iowameatfarms.comHours: Mon - Sat, 9 - 6; Sun, 10a.m. - 6

Looking for that perfect filet or rib-eye for your

family dinner or backyard barbecue? Siesel’s Old

Fashioned Meats and Iowa Farms have both been

serving the San Diego community for over 44 years.

With an excellent staff of top quality meat cutters

with years of service and experience, both markets

contribute to the joys of cooking and eating —

noting that both should be enjoyed and done well.

According to Stan Glenn, meat supervisor at iowa

Meat Farms, here are a few comments and tips from

a “master meatcutter.”

Q: If someone brings in a recipe, how do you steer

them in the right direction?

Glenn: When we review a recipe, the first thing

we will look at is the cooking time and method.

That will tell us which cut is appropriate. Errors

are much more common than you would think.

Cookbooks, magazines, the internet, and the Food

network are all guilty at times (some are worse than

others, i.e., “Cooks illustrated”). There can also be

some confusion in regional names for different cuts.

There is also a tendency towards “overkill” by some

chefs; that is, they specify expensive cuts, when less

expensive ones are not just more economical, but

better suited to the recipe. Our aim is to send the

customer off with the best cut for that particular

recipe. When they prepare that recipe and it makes

them happy, then we are happy!

Q: How long have you been in business and why is it better to buy meats straight from a butcher than at a corporate grocery store?

Glenn: We have a saying: “Buying meat in a grocery

store is like going to the dentist to have your eyes

checked!” The way we thrive in the marketplace is

by offering better products than anyone else. Our

focus is always on quality first, and price second.

We are specialists. We know which product is the

best, where to find it, and how to cut it properly. We

LIVE this business, and we are serious about what

we do.”

With over 300 cuts of meats and a staff ready

to serve you, don’t hesitate to check in at their two

locations to help you serve the perfect recipe for

your next gathering or family dinner.

The Chinos family has been profiled in almost

every magazine in Southern California, even the

infamous “new yorker” for their amazing selection

of multiple varieties of produce. From an era that

relies on word-of-mouth and reputation, you will

not find a website listed for Chinos Farms. To find

updated listings of their local home-grown produce,

you must find out the old-fashioned way: make a

telephone call and listen to a message of the daily

listings. With such a famous farm here in San Diego,

The Chinos list at the local farm’s bureau some of

their local produce, including: tomatoes, squash,

squash blossoms, beans, shell beans, dried beans,

melons, cucumbers, sprouts, greens and lettuces,

celery root, carrots, turnips, parsnips, salsify,

radishes, brussels sprouts, okra, onions, Jerusalem

artichokes, peppers, herbs, strawberries, strawberry

figs and Concord grapes.

Mille Fleurs’ Chef, Martin Woesle has been

buying vegetables daily from the Chinos Family

for the past 27 years; and as such, speaks volumes

about why the farm remains successful.

“The produce is fresh picked daily, with many

specialty items and multiple selections of the same

vegetable,” notes Chef Martin. “Instead of just

serving regular carrots, you have many different

types and variations of each vegetable. I have been

going there daily since 1985.” f

The Bestowal

In donating a pair of shoes for every one purchased, TOMS has provided more than two million of the world’s impoverished children with its classic canvas slide through their ‘One for One’ campaign. With bridal, prom, and holiday collections well received, the shoe designer now welcomes its newest spring designs, with the addition of ballet flats in vibrant shades of velvet suede.

M aking a difference one step at a time, or as

Blake Mycoskie, founder and chief shoe

giver of TOMS, would say — a concept

of giving ‘One for One,’ has set in motion a cause-

center mission for business unlike any other; for

every purchase of TOMS shoes, another is donated

to a person in need. A derivative of “tomorrow,”

TOMS simply seeks to offer a better future for

impoverished children; a theme that continues to

inspire brand loyalists and those hoping to make an

impact on the world around.

While vacationing in Argentina several years

ago, Mycoskie became inspired with the idea — an

“aha” moment that has truly impacted the lives of

millions globally. During his visit, he took note of

the many children walking barefoot in the small

villages along harsh terrain. The Texas-native and

former “Amazing race” contestant also became

aware of the evident health issues — soil-inherited

diseases, such as ring worm, podoconiosis (or simply

“mossy foot”), and tetanus, that can be absorbed

through exposed skin; especially in regions laden

with silica-rich soil. TOMS, as a result, helps to

prevent such disease and increase basic hygiene

standards, allowing youth to attend school, work,

and simply dream of a brighter tomorrow.

In further raising awareness to the impact a pair

of shoes can truly have, TOMS’ 5th Annual “One

Day Without Shoes” event — slated for April 10,

2012 — asks the world to go without shoes for a

day; the event has previously yielded more than

250,000 participants and more than 1,600 events

worldwide.

According to Mycoskie, “The problem is large

but the solution is simple. Wearing shoes and basic

hygiene can prevent both infection and disease due

to unsafe roads and contaminated soil. By imagining

a life without shoes, we can all contribute to the

awareness of these conditions, which is why we ask

everyone to join TOMS and participate in ‘One

Day Without Shoes’.”

“Putting shoes on in the morning is an every day activity that we take for granted,” notes Blake Mycoskie, founder and chief shoe giver of TOMS. “For many of the children that receive shoes from TOMS, it is their very first pair that they can call their own.”

Argentine farmers for the past several hundred

years. As the inspiration for the canvas and cotton

fabric shoes, styles now include a Wrap Boot,

Stitchouts, Cordones and Botas; the sole is rubber,

and the brand offers several vegan styles as well.

new this spring, the “Spring Simplified”

collection is inspired by the minimalistic lifestyle

of musician and artist, Lenny Kravits, who takes

us back to the basics of being thankful for having

the mere “gift of life.” The campaign draws from

Kravits’ dedication to follow the mindset of creating

an environment of “low-impact living, and reminds

us that simplifying our environment unburdens

our minds, and our lives,” freeing ourselves to give

back. in addition, TOMS introduces their posh and

trendy ballet flats in an array of styles and shades;

from burlap neutral tones to velvet suede in vibrant

pinks and sapphire blues, giving avid followers

more of a selection to participate in the ‘One for

One’ program.

As Mycoskie reflects on the number of shoes that

have been donated and the impact of how the brand

has progressed in becoming an international fashion

house of stylish comfort, he humbly indicates how

“TOMS is extremely [modest] to say that [we] have

given over two million pairs of shoes to kids in need

with the ‘One for One’ model. [And], because this

model has been so successful in addressing the need

of shoes for children, it became apparent that it

was the most obvious of these needs considering

that most cases of blindness and visual impairment

can be prevented.”

TOMS Eyewear — a program launched in the

summer of 2011 — addresses the issue of visual

impairment and blindness; in true TOMS tradition,

each purchase provides a donation through medical

treatment, prescription eyeglasses and sight-saving

surgery, administered by its first Sight Giving

Partner, Seva Foundation. Surprisingly, visual

impairment is the seventh-largest health disability

in the world, with nearly 90 percent living in

underdeveloped countries.

providing a type of luxury that most of us take for

granted — a healthy lifestyle. Each donation without

question has helped establish a stronger foundation

for underprivileged children, placing them on the

road to success, “one shoe at a time.” f

W alking through the lower ninth district

of New Orleans is, in a lot of ways, like

walking through the ruins of an historic

Roman city. It has a distinct feeling of emptiness

and desolation, as if history had outrun the place

and made it into a museum before its time. At the

very edge of the district, caught in a groin between

the Mississippi River and the Greater New Orleans

Bridge, is Common Ground Relief Center.

As its location implies, Common Ground Relief

Center is not your typical non-profit. Founded in

the immediate aftermath of hurricane Katrina,

the organization was primarily focused, at first, on

environmental rehabilitation and oil spill mitigation.

Several tankers had split open during the storm,

and their contents were widely distributed across

the lower ninth ward (New Orleans’ largest district).

Soil damage was so endemic that, to this day, lead

deposits are too high to allow for safe planting, and

raised beds have become the default approach for

all garden operations.

Thomas Pepper, current director of Common

Grounds, has been living in New Orleans since

before the flood. During our interview he took me

over to the bookshelf and picked out a paperback

called “The Great Deluge.” The cover showed a

picture of the lower ninth one day after the flood.

A barge had made its way over the levies, and had

come to rest about 100 feet from an old Victorian

two story. “That’s the house we’re in now,” he said,

pointing to the Victorian. “The water was up to the

second floor.”

In the months and years following Katrina,

Common Grounds evolved into much more than an

ecological restoration project. “We were supplying

thousands of meals to flood victims and had our

clothing distribution tents set up after the water

subsided,” says Pepper. Volunteers were recruited

to the center from all over the world to help with

reconstruction projects like gutting damaged

property, building houses, and establishing

community gardens. “The average was about

2,500 volunteers a year,” he explained. “But we are

expecting more this year.”

To accommodate the high volume of volunteers,

in 2009 Common Grounds acquired a headquarters

on Deslonde Street in the west side of the lower

ninth. The house was severely damaged during

the flood, but restored several years later. Now it

has its own vegetable garden and a cross section

of landscaping that runs along the home’s eastern

façade. Up to around 20 volunteers can board there

at a time, and about 30 more in the house next

door, which functions as an extension of the main

headquarters and the office for the new legal clinic.

The Common Ground legal clinic emerged as an

alternative for low-income families or community

members who were, for lack of an attorney, rendered

helpless or displaced during the rebuilding process.

Legal advice is offered on an income-based sliding

scale, and the clinic, originally open only six hours

a week, is now open for seventeen. Many residents

lost their insurance papers or succession claims in

the flood, or lost money due to contractor fraud.

“You had guys who would come in dressed in

suits and tell people that they could rebuild their

house for cheap,” says Pepper. “But they were just

scam artists. Some of them did a bad job, and some

of them wouldn’t even touch the houses.”

Nearly seven years after Hurricane Katrina, the

lower ninth ward of New Orleans is still struggling to

recover itself. There is currently only one school in

the entire area, serving kindergarten through eight

grades; and one high school which has been talked

about, but remains un-built. Until a few years ago,

a grocery store was not even present in the entire

district, so locals were forced to purchase all of

their food from nearby gas stations or convenience

stores. It will be a very long road to recovery for

New Orleans, but with the aid of organizations like

Common Ground, and of volunteers from all over

the world, there is hope that the city will one day

thrive again. F

Rising star and celebrity actress, Amanda

Baker — most notable for her roles as ‘Babe

opera “All My Children,” as well as her role as ‘Jolene

Crowell’ from “General Hospital” — recently stopped

for a one-and-one with FINE Magazine during her

photo shoot at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Baker

will be joining Leonard Simpson at this year’s “Show

Biz Style, the Party” as a celebrity guest and model;

the event is a charity fashion soiree to be held on

March 9, benefitting local military families. Additional

Q: Amanda, How were you approached to

partake in this charity event, and what made

you decide to get involved with this particular

foundation?

Baker: Leonard [Simpson] has been

a dear friend of mine for a few years

now and he approached me about

being part of the charity fashion show

this year. I co-hosted with him at his

2010 Best Dressed Fashion Show and

benefit gala and was honored to be a

part of it so naturally I said yes to this

event. I’ve continually been involved

with charities and feel that giving

back is so important and have always

wanted to be a part of something

commemorating military families.

My grandfather and uncle are retired

military and I have a first cousin who

was stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Q: In selecting events where you will be

making a celebrity appearance, how do you

also go through the process of selecting roles

that you feel will benefit your career?

Baker: I feel that it’s very important

to continually grow as an actress. It’s

one thing to be able to play the girl

next door and southern belle, whom I

can relate to, but I also love choosing

roles that challenge me. These types of

roles really show your range and what

you’re capable of as an artist. I’m also

Q: What projects are you currently working

on that you can share with our readers, and

where can we look forward to seeing you in

the future?

Baker: I had a short film debut at the

end of last year called, “The Birds

of Anger,” that was part of a Film

Festival on G4TV that gained a lot of

recognition in several media outlets,

one being “The New York Times.”

I also have a horror film coming out

called, “Lizzie,” that’s based off of the

murders of Lizzie Borden. Look out

for me in a few national commercials

as well!

Q: Lastly, what do you love most about being

an actress?

Baker: I’ve always loved performing

ever since I was a little girl. I love

being able to explore new characters

and become someone else. Seeing the

A growing trend among world travelers, ‘vacations with

a purpose’ (or simply ‘voluntourism’) extends the unique

opportunity to further engage social responsibility; while

on vacation, tourists can impact local communities with

a variety of volunteer projects through various non-profit

organizations. And according to several travel surveys and

polls, it appears this trend has been gaining in popularity

over the past decade; the Travel Industry of America has

previously noted that 55 million Americans have participated

in ‘voluntourism’-type vacations at least once during their

lifetime, and that more than twice that number had plans to

do so in the near future as well.

Whether you are helping to build schools in the Andes or

hospitals in eastern Europe, even repairing trails and roads

in Nepal, many non-profit organizations offer year-round

programs and projects for tourists to assist during their stay.

Here are two such programs, featuring worldwide travel with

the opportunity to lend a hand at the same time:

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

T he opportunities to ‘vacation with a purpose’

are plentiful around the globe with Habitat

for Humanity, building safe, affordable

housing for the low-income in poverty-stricken

areas. Caring individuals eager to help can donate

time and talent, anything from pounding nails to

financing expertise for a construction site; all of

which makes a difference in prospective families’

lives, while offering a life-changing experience

for anyone volunteering. Vacationing this way

contributes something to others less fortunate but

has an added benefit of being able to immerse

oneself in another country and culture — fusing

giving while seeing the world in the process.

Interestingly, Habitat for Humanity has

operations in 80-plus countries and has helped

more than two million people worldwide to-date.

loads of six people, while the other takes no more

than 16, providing the least environmental impact.

On a mission to simply conserve the natural

landscape of Hawaii and its surrounding waters,

Wild Side Hawaii’s volunteer projects assist with

the collection of gathering data onboard and

underwater — a type of field study that focuses on

marine mammals, turtles and coral reef research

programs; including whale and dolphin research,

surveying the reef to monitor the health of the

ecosystem, along with animal identification

and numbers. And while participants have the

opportunity to observe sea life up-close, even

photographing species and snorkeling with turtles,

it is the scientific data collected that is critical and

necessary for conservation and animal well-being

around the island.

The fundamental difference in Wild Side

excursions is further set apart by their sustainable

eco-tourism focus combined with scientific and

educational goals. Manager Elizabeth Hartford

describes it as ‘edutaining’ – a unique fusion of

education and entertainment as volunteers and

passengers observe whale behavior or dolphin

pods. By limiting group size “our goal is to promote

sustainable tourism over time,” says Hartford.

“After all, we don’t want to love nature to death.

Plus, small groups allow our staff and volunteers to

take photo identification of dolphin populations or

record animal behaviors that are used for scientific

purposes.”

“We take education and stewardship very

seriously and work closely with the Wild Dolphin

Foundation,” she adds. “We train our volunteers

to participate in the research we perform. Some

volunteers come for a day; some for six to eight

weeks. Volunteers have included a high school

student, other marine biologists, a physicist, a stay-

at-home mom, and professions in between. We

teach them to record behaviors and do population

counts. Some species have very small numbers

and are put on the endangered lists because of the

information we provide, and our volunteers are

indispensable in this.”

‘Vacationing with a purpose’ in the waters around

Oahu can profoundly impact volunteers. “Some,”

notes Hartford, “even become our staff.”

c ore fitness as seen through Yoga and

Pilates, can hold tremendous outcomes

in shaping our physical being; not to

mention the ever-popular Kegel exercises that have

been used and thought to work the pelvic floor. But

in taking this idea another step further, it is the

awareness of the deepest pelvic floor muscle that

can offer even greater health and fitness benefits.

With the encouragement of Dr. Theresa Nesbitt,

OBGYN — an author and health advocate known

as “the movement doctor,” I’d like to share with you

this very concept in the hopes of raising awareness

and interest in the toning of our pelvic floor.

You cannot change your body without first

changing your brain; and we cannot look at an

old concept in a new way until we are shown how.

Most people do not know they need help with their

core until noticeable outcomes surface; including

protruding lower abs, leaking or incontinence,

falling organs, back pain, decreased sexual pleasure

and endurance.

As a personal trainer, I have spent years correcting

postures and sculpting bodies; but it was not until

I learned about our true core — which includes

the pelvic floor, when it clicked. I was immediately

intrigued, but did not understand the relevance of

these muscles, as they cannot be seen. The pelvic

floor muscles have the highest resting tone of any

muscle in the body, even the heart. As they cannot

be seen, the pelvic floor is involuntary and is not

trained directly.

The core consists of two layers — inner and

outer; the inner layer contains and compresses

internal organs, as the outer layer wraps and

a Journey To The cenTer oF

From the inside out, core training and fitness seeks to stabilize the regions around the spine, pelvis, and shoulder girdle for added physical support; as a result, ease of movement is gained for extremities and pelvic organ function, along with the added bonus of posture correction, sexual health and performance, and simply looking better in your clothes.

reinforces the inner core. Think of an open suitcase

with a heap of clothes: when you close the suitcase,

the inner core is activated; when you flip the locks

and wrap the straps — that is like the outer core,

stabilizing and strengthening. The right order is

imperative; as you do not want to pull on the straps

until you have closed the suitcase good and tight.

The inner core is the canister made of the

diaphragm (on top), the thoracolumbar fascia (on the

sides) and the pelvic floor muscles (on the bottom).

They all activate involuntarily and in unison. The

outer core is comprised of the abdominal muscles

— which can be directly and voluntarily controlled

and trained.

It is important to note that you train the

awareness of the inner core which includes the

pelvic floor.

So how do you train your awareness? If you read

this far, you have already started. You also use a

lot of imagery when practicing simple movements

— especially everyday movements. It is like when

a baby sees an object, he/she makes his body stiff

and reaches for it; when the brain sees and/or

makes a picture the inner core fires, the brain is

chemically going to change to initiate a movement

throughout the nervous system/motor system. This

activates the innermost layer of your pelvic floor,

and packs the suitcase providing you have flipped

the locks (correct anatomical position); now you can

train the straps on the suitcase, your abs!

There is NO CORE, without the FLOOR! F

Backyard Vacations has developed an astonishing

array of visual pleasure on which to feast one’s

eyes. “We left all the large trees situated on the side

lot that has become the outdoor space you see here,

and arranged other vegetation around it,” says

developer and designer, Justin Cummings.

Incorporating sustainable practices in water

management, materials, and lighting, the 6,000

to 8,000 square feet of backyard garden space is

energy-efficient and built to last decades, using

the latest technology. Pool water is heated by solar

panels mounted at the rear of the property and

LED Kitchler lighting is amply positioned to profile

plantings, trees, and social space to maximize effect

while using energy efficient spiked lamps and tiki

torches.

The pool is stunning with hand painted

tiles in luxurious rich blues sporting irises and

fronds edging the pool circumference, providing

compelling contrast to the orange brick paths that

surround it. Additionally, blue-blazed tiles provide

accents on several step series to continue the theme

throughout the area. Several natural gathering

spots for socializing effectively provide comfortable

outdoor living while offering panoramic views. In

fact, the slope of the ground on which this resort-

style, garden terrace rests is one of its captivating

features.

At the back of the property sits a lovely outdoor

fireplace at the highest and most prominent

elevation, beckoning as a natural gathering

destination. One can easily imagine a roaring fire

on a chilly night, with smoke rising out of the blue-

blazed chimney. Serving as a beautiful combination

incorporating both old and new vegetation, along

with stylistic adaptations like low side walls that

outskirt the environs, the theme of preservation

is consistent throughout. Indeed, even the wall’s

blending of stucco punctuated with intermittent

brick face in key spots, reinforces the impeccable

attention to detail that is consistently reflected in

Cumming’s design expertise.

“We are a ‘one-stop’ outdoor shop,” says

Cummings. “This was a dream project for me

because we designed and implemented all aspects

of it. When we take on a project, the ultimate goal

is to create a beautiful space the client desires, but

also one that will be easy to maintain and offers

longevity,” – all in an effort to fuse outdoor beauty

with sustainable landscaping.

Backyard Vacations can customize an entire

or partial outdoor living space. As a full-featured

landscaping business, they design and build fire

pits, outdoor kitchens, pools and spas, natural and

living ponds, cabanas, edible gardens and fruit

efficient irrigation and drip systems as well. As

w hen was the last time you went online

to find a personal trainer? If your

answer was, “Actually, not long ago,”

you are not alone. Recent statistics indicate that

nearly 10 million Americans a month are taking to

the search engines of the Internet to find a health

and fitness professional. Between the ads for local

gyms, the infomercials for home workout programs,

and the goals saved somewhere on the refrigerator

doors of our minds, the pressure to succeed in

getting healthier is intense, and the maxim holds

that working with a personal trainer helps people

reach their goals faster. After all, there is no one

regimen that will work for every person, as every

person has their own history, lifestyle, limitations,

and strengths.

In fact, the only three elements to any workout

routine that have been identified to work for every

person are intensity, variety, and consistency. The

reason programs like the vaunted P90X are so

successful is, first, the broad range of exercises

and disciplines included within. Second, they are

often far more intense than the average individual

has experienced before, and, finally, their design is

such that a home user is encouraged to daily do the

workout. While this format can work for a lot of

people, there are those that need daily interaction

with others in their exercise routine, that need

someone to tailor a program specifically for their

body types and fitness goals, or that simply do better

when working out somewhere outside the home.

Enter the good folks at YourTrainer.com, an

optimized website designed to help trainers connect

with the people who want to find them.

really, honestly, bad Internet presence of the fitness

industry, the more I realized, people on both sides of

the table needed help connecting,” explains Jeffrey

Swett, YourTrainer’s founder. What he discovered

online was a disorganized landscape where some

national trainers crowded out local professionals,

the big gyms pushed individual trainers further

down on search result pages, and a general lack of

order that made the search for a trainer a frustrating

exercise.

The theory behind YourTrainer.com is simple:

create a site where people can browse trainer profiles

based first on location, and then on factors such as

interests, rates, and credentials, among others. And

because the trainers pay for membership on the

site, viewing and connecting with them is free for

clients. That is right, you read that correctly. Unlike

a dating site, this is completely free to you, the

client. And because they believe that the personal

connection between trainer and client is the number

one indicator of future success in reaching fitness

goals, YourTrainer suggests clients contact two or

three trainers before committing to one.

The site was launched late last year, and as a

new presence in the industry, the number of area

trainers is small and growing rapidly. Because it is

currently lean in content aside from trainer profiles,

the YourTrainer staff is committed to filling it out

with high-quality articles, offers, and resources from

and for both trainers and clients. Their stated goal

is to create a robust site where people can connect,

increase their knowledge base, and find more tools

to help them reach their goals and set new ones.

Losing weight, gaining muscle, and improving

endurance and flexibility is hard work, and the

right trainer can make a world of difference. F
