MAY 2016 | FINE MUSIC | FOREWORD 前言

After a break of two years, Artist-in-Residence is back! This special series aims to build a platform for established musicians to showcase their all-rounded talent. As Artist-in-Residence, Zhang Ying is in the limelight this month as Radio 4’s featured artist. You can hear her play solo pieces and see how she collaborates with other musicians to present a variety of works written for the pipa. In her pre-recorded solo recital on 12 May, there is a mix of the more standard wen (civil) and wu (martial) repertoires, and works with geographical associations. For the live recital on 26 May, it’s a ‘Zhang Ying and Friends’ programme that demonstrates her versatility. Book your ticket now to join the excitement in the studio.

This month, there is another Studio One recital which is equally fascinating. The story goes like this. Lio Kuok-man is the Assistant Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra. As a Hong Kong-trained musician, his first home-coming concert with the Orchestra has a special meaning. One day, we were talking about that tour and he wanted to see if some players from the Orchestra might come in to do a studio recording during the first day of their stay in Hong Kong. The idea was further developed into the possibility of involving our own RTHK Quartet, and making it open to a studio audience. So, here is it with a live-broadcast chamber recital entitled A Philadelphia - Hong Kong Encounter which will take place on 18 May at 8pm at Studio One, Broadcast Drive. The recital is presented by RTHK Radio 4 in association with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Book your ticket now!

On the following two evenings at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall, the full Philadelphia Orchestra will present two exciting programmes. All tickets are sold out. You are welcome to tune in to Radio 4 for the live broadcasts or log on to our website for the programme archive. The first concert will also be filmed by RTHK TV for broadcast in September on RTHK TV 31.

As a prelude to RTHK’s Philadelphia Orchestra coverage, this issue of FM brings you Stacey Rodda’s recent interview with the Orchestra’s sensational Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Kathy Lam’s conversation with the Macau and HK–groomed pianist/conductor Lio Kuok-man, and music critic Oliver Chou’s special profile of this great Orchestra.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to our connection with schools. Students from 20 primary and secondary schools have taken part in the Fine Music DJ@Schools competition, organised by the Music Office of LCSD in association with RTHK Radio 4. Through the medium of radio drama, they were given a chance to try out on the promotion of classical music. The competition will be broadcast in R4 Buddies. In the programme, winning teams will also share their unique experience of preparing and presenting the dramas. The 20 clips have been uploaded onto Facebook. You are encouraged to view and click to decide which schools get the most ‘Likes’! Flashback of the event is on p. 19.

Leading the Orchestra for the First Time

SR : There must be huge pressure when you meet an orchestra for the

first time. Do you remember your first time with The Philadelphia?

YNS : I never tire of telling the story of my childhood memory of listening

to a Philadelphia Orchestra recording of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth

Symphony, under the baton of the great Eugene Ormandy. I

was very taken by this piece. In December 2008, when I took

the podium to make my debut with the Orchestra, conducting

that very piece, I felt that something very special was happening.

Later I heard that the musicians also felt this strong connection.

So when I was selected by The Philadelphia Orchestra as its next

Music Director, I knew inside myself that this relationship was right

at this moment, for this Orchestra and for me – I felt that the stars

were aligned.

SR : How would you describe your relationship with the Orchestra?

YNS : I have felt the closest of bonds to the musicians of the Orchestra

since my debut, almost as if we had been working together all our

lives. We have a special musical partnership, a deep connection

that I can only describe as magical. When I step in front of these

musicians there is a mutual respect and desire to work together,

as well as a very distinct and palpable energy. We are united in

our goals – to make the ultimate in music. It is this remarkable

relationship that has enabled us to accomplish, with so much joy,

all we have done so far and all we will do in the future.

SR: Stacey Rodda

YNS: Yannick Nézet-Séguin

The Importance of New Music

SR : Many orchestras have deep musical roots in specific repertoire. Is

American music often on the menu?

YNS : For me, it is important that we reflect the past, present, and

future of American music in the overall mix of our programming.

These works incorporate uniquely American sounds, including

jazz, Broadway, spirituals, and film. Our recent performances of

Gershwin’s American in Paris are an example of the past, as were

our incredible performances of Bernstein’s MASS in 2015. Last

fall we presented powerful performances of Hannibal Lokumbe’s

One Land, One River, One People, commissioned specifically for

the Orchestra, and a good example of the present day. And next

season we will add electronica, a look into the future, with Mason

Bates’ Alternative Energy.

SR : What is your position on commissioning new works?

YNS : I believe strongly in this important aspect of our legacy, which

is to champion and premiere new repertoire. This longstanding

commitment to new music goes all the way back to the very

beginning of the Orchestra. It is critical that we carry on this

tradition because not only does it add new works to the repertoire

for all orchestras to perform, it also gives us the chance to feature

our stellar musicians and create showpieces for some instruments

that may be featured less often for solos.

Going on Tour to Asia

SR : In 2014, the Residency of China & Tour of Asia marked your

inaugural tour with The Philadelphia Orchestra – the Orchestra

served as the United States’ first cultural ambassador to China in

1973 under Eugene Ormandy. What memories do you have from

that tour and what did you learn from it?

YNS : The first tour with an Orchestra is very special, and the 2014 Tour

of Asia was no exception. It was the debut to the world of our

relationship and it was also incredibly special for me to see how

audiences in Asia respond to this Orchestra that has a long history

in of representing the United States to the world. We were all very

happy and proud. And I learned how knowledgeable audiences

are about the music, how attentive they are in concerts, and how

enthusiastic they are about sharing their passion. It has been more

than 10 years since the Orchestra has been in Hong Kong — I

really look forward to bringing the Orchestra to kick off our tour in

Hong Kong!

SR : What goes into your thought process when planning a programme?

YNS : It is a process of curating the concerts and overall season,

balancing the artistic themes I want to establish with input from

our musician and board artistic committees, taking into account

what we hear from our audiences, and making room for new

repertoire to balance the traditional. We want audiences to hear

familiar works and to experience new music but in fresh contexts.

I also focus on the overall health of the Orchestra, programming

repertoire that benefits the sense of sound the musicians and I

strive to achieve together. And, I am very engaged in developing

the programmes for the dates when I am not on the podium

in Philadelphia. I think about what is best suited for our guest

conductors to continue the themes of each season, a way for

our audience to follow along on our journey. I am fortunate in this

respect, also, to be working with conductors and artists who are

engaged with us and participate in the whole artistic picture.

SR : Take us through the music for the Hong Kong concerts: Brahms’

high-octane ‘Pastoral’ Symphony No. 2; the colourful symphonic

suite Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov; Mahler’s orchestration

of the darkly-hued Beethoven ‘Serioso’ Quartet; the Austrian

symphonic excellence of Bruckner’s ‘Romantic’ Symphony…

YNS : For our tours it is important to present what the Orchestra does

best. I have a strong affinity for both Brahms and Bruckner. We

have done all four Brahms symphonies in Philadelphia so now we

share them with the world, last year in Europe with Brahms’ Third

Symphony and this year we bring his Second Symphony, perfect

vehicles for our sound. Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony is perhaps

his most approachable, and a wonderful display of our playing

tradition.

Scheherazade is a piece that The Philadelphia Orchestra recorded

many times over the years, so it is part of our history and a chance

to display our Russian side. It is a real orchestral showpiece! And

the Beethoven is an extraordinary way of discovering the virtuosity

of our strings!

Future Visions

SR : You want to be at the cutting edge, so what are your visions for the

future of The Philadelphia Orchestra?

YNS : We recently announced a new long-term plan for the community

that I am very excited about. Our HEAR (Health, Education,

Access, Research) is a series of collaborative learning initiatives

that will create dynamic community programmes around health,

music education, and access to the Orchestra, with an additional

research component. This work, along with our cutting edge

LiveNote app, all are designed to bring people closer to the music,

which is so important to our future.

SR : Where’s the best place to get dim sum in Philadelphia?

YNS : Many people think Bing Bing is the best place to get dim sum in

Philadelphia. However, I understand that it is hard to find authentic

Hong Kong dim sum unless you are IN Hong Kong. So I am

looking forward to tasting the real thing!

Lio Kuok-man, the 34-year-old conductor who graduated from

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with first class

honours in piano performance, was appointed as the Assistant

Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra two years ago after

being the top prize winner in the June 2014 Evgeny Svetlanov

Conducting Competition in Paris. Now, he is starting The

Philadelphia Orchestra’s Asian tour with the renowned American

orchestra and Hong Kong will be their first stop.

Kathy Lam talked to Lio Kuok-man about the Orchestra’s

Asian tour and a special chamber music concert that has been

organised for Hong Kong music lovers.

The Philadelphia Orchestra will present two concerts at Hong

Kong Cultural Centre on 19 and 20 May 2016. He clearly

remembered that he first heard the live performance of this

American orchestra while he was a student. He waited quite a

long time outside the ticket office in order to get a student ticket.

After the concert, he told himself that it would be great to

cooperate with such an amazing orchestra one day. Now his

dream comes true.

In addition to the two main concerts, Lio Kuok-man has also

prepared a special gift for classical music fans in Hong Kong. He

will play Dvořák’s Piano Quintet with two musicians each from

The Philadelphia Orchestra and the RTHK Quartet at Studio One

of RTHK Radio 4. It will not be merely a chamber music concert,

but also a gathering. Professional musicians from various cultural

backgrounds will share their thoughts on music during the

concert.

As a conductor, Lio needs to have a good understanding of the

demands of orchestra players. Playing chamber music gives him

a chance to listen to and communicate with players. It, to some

degree, shortens the distance between conductor and players.

Even though Lio is quite busy now, he still spends much time and

energy playing chamber music with his partners.

Lio is undoubtedly one of the most prominent young conductors

in the world. After being appointed as the Assistant Conductor of

The Philadelphia Orchestra, he has frequently received invitations

from major orchestras and opera houses. The most recent one

was from the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. He conducted

The Maid of Pskov, one of Rimsky-Korsakov’s early operas. It

was Lio’s debut in Russia.

War-Time Aid

The first connection was in 1940, a good 76 years ago, through a ‘Gala Symphony

Concert’ to raise fund for war-torn China, which had been fighting alone for almost

three years. The concert was by no means a routine charity show for musicians

but was actually a star-studded event. The Orchestra was taking a break after its

grilling recording sessions for Fantasia, the legendary animation film produced by

Walt Disney, in which the Philly Orchestra played 7 of 8 soundtracks, including the

famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Bach, arranged and conducted by Leopold

Stokowski. Stokowski took part in the China Aid Council concert in Philadelphia on

21 March 1940, and was joined by Eugene Ormandy, who had succeeded him as

Music Director in 1938, also wielding the baton. Violinist Josef Szigeti and cellist

Emanuel Feuermann also performed. Hu Shih (胡適), a literary giant in 20th century

China and ambassador to the United States at the time, addressed the audiences

with a word of thanks.

But there was not a word in the media about the concert, until 33 years later.

‘We are old friends. You supported us in the 1940s and we are grateful. China does

not forget her friends,’ said a Chinese host to the visiting Philadelphia Orchestra

during its historic tour in 1973 to the country for which they had once raised funds.

The person who made that remark to maestro Ormandy, then 73 years old, backstage

after the Philly’s third of four Beijing concerts is none other than Jiang Qing (江青), the

ferocious Cultural Revolution protagonist and wife of Chairman Mao Zedong (毛澤東).

No orchestra anywhere has the same musical connection to this part of the world as does The Philadelphia Orchestra.

The first China tour of 1973

There was no better choice than The Philadelphia Orchestra for that 1973

China tour. Early that year, the Orchestra had performed at the second

inauguration of President Richard Nixon, who himself was on an ice-breaking

tour to the Middle Kingdom a year before. But Ormandy and his players did

far more than the London Philharmonic under John Pritchard and the Vienna

Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado had done during their China debuts a

few months earlier. Instead of sight-reading the works from the host, the Philly

musicians, along with pianist Daniel Epstein, rehearsed and performed the

Yellow River piano concerto at the Saratoga Festival before the tour, and

recorded it afterwards. The record on RCA, which also includes San Pei, also

known as, March of the Workers and Peasants, marking the first Chinese

orchestral works performed by a major western orchestra for commercial

release.

But what was not put on the vinyl record was an impromptu rehearsal where

Ormandy was invited to conduct the host orchestra playing the second

movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Conductor Li Delun (李德倫),

handed him the baton after the first movement and, as Harold Schonberg of

the New York Times noted, ‘The Central Philharmonic sounded like a different

orchestra’.

Laughter and Appreciation

According to Yim Hok-man (閻學敏), Principal Percussionist of the Hong Kong

Chinese Orchestra who was then with the Central Philharmonic, the gathering

of the two orchestras was full of laughter, especially during the exchange of

gifts. ‘We presented a large gong to them with our orchestra’s name and date

on it. They were thrilled.’ The Philadelphia percussionist Anthony Orlando

recalled they did use the gong once in Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

But the sound quality did not quite fit and so it has remained in the Orchestra’s

special collections.

The 2005 Tour

The remarks on the Chinese gong were made during The Philadelphia

Orchestra’s visit to Hong Kong in 2005 under then–Music Director Christoph

Eschenbach, and Orlando was among 24 in the roster who had been on the

1973 China tour. On this 2016 tour, the number of veterans from earlier tours

drops to just six, including the percussionist.

Long gone is the Cultural Revolution, so are Ormandy and Madame Mao, but

not The Philadelphia Orchestra’s connection with this region. In a big way,

China still has in mind its ‘old friend’ by playing host three years in a row

(2012 - 2014) through a residency programme for The Philadelphia Orchestra,

which in 2011 had gone into temporary bankruptcy as a result of the financial

crisis at the time.

A New Director and a New Direction

A new page has been turned with Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin

taking over as Music Director in 2012. Born in 1975, the Montreal native

couldn’t have been a part of the 1973 historic visit but makes his connections

in many other ways.

The 2014 China tour, Nézet-Séguin’s inaugural overseas tour with The

Philadelphia Orchestra, is a case in point. Unlike 1973, the Orchestra now

had players from the mainland and Taiwan. Both Associate Concertmaster Fu

Ying and Principal Cello Ni Haiye are from Shanghai, and violists Chen Che-

hung and Rachel Ku from Taiwan. Instead of a revolutionary work with political

tunes such as the East is Red, they played Oscar laureate Tan Dun’s nostalgic

Nu Shu. Tan’s work was played not only in Beijing and Shanghai, but also in

Changsha, its place of origin.

The 2014 tour took the 100-strong ensemble to cities around Hong Kong,

including Shenzhen, Taipei, and Macao, but didn’t actually visit Hong Kong,

despite our connections with The Philadelphia Orchestra. The latest Hong

Kong connection with the Orchestra is Lio Kuok-man (廖國敏), one of our

most accomplished locally trained musicians, who has been an Assistant

Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 2014. Further back, the late

Ling Tung (董麟), Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic from 1978

to 1981, began his career with The Philadelphia Orchestra as a violinist from

1958 to1964. Somewhere in the middle is this writer’s connection with The

Philadelphia Orchestra’s now defunct archive. My two-day visit in 2002, thanks

to the Asian Cultural Council, turned out to be the last due to budget cuts.

But the released clippings and house programmes, including the invaluable

1973 and 1993 China tours, have become a part of our musical collections

ever since.

The Current tour and New Connections

For all parties concerned, the 2016 tour is therefore a timely reconnection for

Hong Kong with the legendary ‘Philadelphia Sound’ at the debut concerts of

its dynamic Music Director. Nézet-Séguin is well aware of the lustrous string

sound of the Orchestra developed under Stokowski and has kicked off the

current season with a programme dedicated to Fantasia of 1940, the year

of the first Philly connection with those who have now become ‘old friends’.

Since 1989, the New Generation concerts, organised by the Hong

Kong Composers’ Guild, have been encouraging music creativity among

young composers in Hong Kong by providing a platform for performance

and exchange of musical ideas. Composers submit their works through

a jury-panelled call-for-scores and shortlisted works are presented by

professional musicians in a concert recorded and broadcast by Radio 4.

This year’s New Generation explores the instrumentation of the saxophone

octet, made up of two soprano saxophones, two alto saxophones, two

tenor saxophones, and two baritone saxophones. Six shortlisted works

will be performed by the Hong Kong Saxophone Ensemble, which has

performed many times locally and overseas. You will also be able to listen

to my new commissioned work, since I had the honour of being named

the winner last year.

The concert will be held on 2 June (Thu) at 8pm at RTHK Studio One.

Please come and hear the birth of the creative product of Hong Kong’s

young composers with a fascinating ensemble.

‘Fine Music DJ@Schools’ is a two-part project that aims to promote classical music with school children. In Part One, from September

2015 to February 2016, Radio 4 colleagues visited 30 schools to promote classical music, radio drama, and introduce the duties of our

colleagues. In Part Two, 20 schools, including primary and secondary schools, joined the ‘Classical Music Radio Drama Broadcast

Training & Contest’, held at the RTHK studios on 28 March and at the Cultural Activities Hall at Tsuen Wan Town Hall on 10 April.

The four radio dramas were written by conductor and music critic Chu Chun-wai.

In the Part Two training section, Raymond Chung from Radio 4, briefly explained radio drama and invited students to demonstrate

various sound effects and roles. After that, the schools were divided into four groups and received intensive training from

our colleagues, to enhance their radio drama skills and prepare them the best performance in the contest. We had three

adjudicators, Ip Sai-hung Jet, Richie Lam, and Jimmy Shiu. All radio dramas were filmed. The videos, which include

performances on the dizi and saxophone, will be posted on R4 Buddies’ Facebook. Champions of the contest will be

invited to be the guests of honour on this programme that same day. Raymond Chung, host of R4 Buddies, will announce

the most Facebook ‘Likes’ and other reactions to the performances on the 14 May programme. This project was

presented by Music Office, Leisure and Cultural Services Department. RTHK Radio 4 was the Associated Presenter.

MAY 2016 | FINE MUSIC | COLUMNS 專欄

Our local conductor Elim Chan has been appointed as the new Chief Conductor of the NorrlandsOperan in Umeå, Sweden. The announcement was made on 13 April, and the contract begins in Autumn 2017 for a three-year term.

‘I still vividly remember the magic and warmth exuding from the Norrlands Opera Symphony Orchestra during the first moments I shared the stage with them.’ Elim Chan recalled, ‘I am eager to embrace and cultivate their shared spirit and curiosity to bring the scores alive.’

Elisabet Ljungar, Director of Music at NorrlandsOperan, said that what impressed her most about Chan was her immense focus and total devotion to the music. ‘She has a natural style of leadership that creates a feeling of involvement and affinity.’

Chan astounded the world when she was the first female winner of the Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition in 2014. As a result, she was appointed Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. In Spring 2016, she was personally invited by the renowned conductor Valery Gergiev to conduct the Mariinsky Orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia. She will be making her debut at the Lucerne Festival with the Orchestra-in-Residence this coming August. Her North American debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will take place in 2017, as well as a return visit to the Hong Kong Philharmonic. She made her debut with the HK Phil in December 2015.

Have you ever thought that working in an orchestra could lead to hearing loss? A British violinist is suing and claiming compensation from the Royal Opera House (ROH) after a rehearsal for his hearing and career loss.

Violist Chris Goldscheider claims that in 2012, during a rehearsal for Wagner’s Die Walküre, the blasting noise from the brass section behind him left him with ‘acoustic shock’, which is resulted when a sudden, unexpected loud sound occurs near the ear. According to court documents seen by the BBC, peak sound levels reached to about 137 decibels, roughly the same volume produced by a jet engine. Goldscheider described his hearing as ‘irreversibly damaged’. The ROH, on the other hand, denies it has responsibility in this case.

Could such a case be regarded as ‘occupational deafness’ if it happened in Hong Kong? According to Sandy Lai, audiologist from the Occupational Deafness Compensation Board, ‘occupational deafness’ is caused by exposure to noise above 85 decibels occurring over a prolonged period of time, and for at least 8 hours a day. In Goldscheider’s case, it is regarded as a ‘work injury’ since his hearing loss was caused by a sole incident. Currently 29 types of occupations are specified as ‘noisy occupations’, but the list does not include musicians. Lai said that if musicians are exposed to excessive noise for over 8 hours per day, they are advised take a 15- to 30-minute break every two hours. They may also use earbuds that can reduce the decibels to protect their hearing.

Radio 4’s exciting ‘Artist-in-Residence’ series returns. This long-standing series aims to showcase established musicians in pre-recorded and live programmes. To open the series is a distinguished performer who you might have seen in Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s concerts, sometimes among the Orchestra members at the centre of the stage, sometimes as the focal point in concertos in front of the whole ensemble. Apart from orchestral performances, she also appears in various solo and chamber concerts, aiming to educate the audience about the truly historic musical instrument. Our ‘Artist-in-Residence’ this month is pipa player Zhang Ying.

Winner of the Silver Award for Pipa Specialism, Youth Section, at the first Chinese Instrumental Music Competition, and the First Prize in the Youth Section at the ‘Longyin Cup’ International Ethnic Instrument of China Competition (Pipa), Zhang Ying’s performance has been praised with such descriptions as ‘well-grounded’, ‘powerful’, ‘natural’, ‘subtle’, ‘flexible’, and ‘superb’. But in the first place, Zhang Ying never imagined herself to become a professional pipa player. She started learning the pipa at the age of four and, as she said to me, ‘her teachers were the lamps unto her feet’ and the key to what she has become. They not only helped her master her technique and deepen

Shing Chun-hay

her musical understanding, but also were stepping stones to her development. Many of them became Zhang Ying’s teachers after she was introduced to them by her previous teacher. Zhang Ying admits, without any links in this chain, she might have dropped out of her musical path with the pipa. By lucky coincidence, the path opened up itself for her.

It led her to the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. In 2004, while Zhang Ying was applying for postgraduate study, the Orchestra happened to be recruiting a pipa player. She applied for it. She received offers from both graduate school and the Orchestra. As a result she studied and worked at the same time, obtaining her Master’s degree after an arduous process of five years. She recalls, not without a laugh, ‘I lost so much hair on the desk writing my thesis!’, but she felt herself lucky to have had the opportunity. In her second year of joining the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, she made her solo debut as a concerto soloist, supported by the full 80-member ensemble, joined on stage by gaohu virtuoso Yu Qiwei. Flattered as Zhang Ying felt for the occasion, she was, even more nervous, and told herself she must do it well. After the performance, she was very excited as if she had passed a test. It is an unforgettable experience for her to this day.

Zhang Ying’s musical path with the pipa has led her to many places.

And this month, it leads her to RTHK, where she will perform in two

concert programmes. For the recorded programme based on the

origin and development of the instrument, she has selected various

classics as well as pieces with ethnic flavours, including Spring of

Tianshan (Xinjiang), Dance of the Yi People (Sichuan), King Chu

Doffs His Armour, and of course the classic of classics, Ambush

from Ten Sides, which Zhang Ying says her hands can play almost

automatically because she has been playing it from a very young

age. This programme will be broadcast on 12 May (Thu) at 8pm.

As for the live concert, with its focus on the pipa, Zhang Ying will

experiment with many modes of musical collaboration. She has

invited friends to join her on stage and will play Send Me a Rose

accompanied by hand drum, Song of Horse Herding with zhongruan

and daruan, and The Heroic Little Sisters of the Grassland with piano,

among other works. A brand-new attempt will be the pipa and dance

performance of Story — Inspired by the Tang Poem ‘Song of the Pipa’.

In this piece, Zhang Ying will work with a dancer from the Hong Kong

Dance Company on reconstructing the touching scene that inspired

the poem, written by Tang poet Bai Juyi about his meeting with a

woman playing the pipa. There will be many more surprising musical

collaborations, but enough previews for now. Come to experience

them live at RTHK Studio One at 8pm on 26 May (Thu).

Special thanks to Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra for their kind permission to Zhang Ying to participate in this performance.

SUNDAY OPERA

In the month of May, Sunday Opera comprises one of the world’s most famous love stories, a baroque music drama on a royal

domestic subject, a tuneful Italian grand opera about a Venetian ballad singer’s sacrifice for love, a rare early Wagner comedy

based on Shakespeare, and a dramatic adaptation of a Russian literary classic.

Sundays 2:00pm

1 May : Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette

The celebrated story of the young lovers of Verona has been set to music by many composers

for more than three hundred years, notably as a dramatic choral symphony by Berlioz, as a

fantasy overture by Tchaikovsky, as a full-length ballet by Prokofiev, as a Broadway musical

by Bernstein, and as operas by Bellini, Gounod, Zandonai, and dozens of other distinguished

musicians.

The subject was just of the kind that would stimulate the interest of Charles Gounod (1818 -

1893). Shakespeare’s poetic imagery is particularly suited to the composer’s melodic sensibility.

The French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré places its focus almost entirely on the

two lovers, thus limiting the function of the original plot and the subordinate characters. There

are several scenes of great lyrical beauty, especially the five magnificent love duets, one in each

act, on account of which the opera was an immediate triumph when it was premiered at the

Théâtre Lyrique of Paris in April 1867. Gounod was aged 49.

In the recording selected for your enjoyment, Romeo is sung by Corsican tenor Roberto

Alagna, Juliette by Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu, Friar Laurence by Belgian bass-

baritone Jose van Dam, and Mercutio by British baritone Simon Keenlyside. They perform with

an international cast of singers in the supporting roles together with the Chorus and Orchestra

of the Capitole of Toulouse conducted by Michel Plasson.

8 May : Vivaldi’s Griselda

Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) was the most celebrated of all the Italian Baroque composers

and certainly one of the most prolific. In addition to his more than 500 concertos and numerous

instrumental, vocal and sacred works, he also composed 94 operas, of which about 20 survive.

Born and brought up in Venice, Vivaldi was trained in a seminary and was ordained a priest at

the age of 25. He took up appointment as Music Master in the Hospital of Mercy, an orphanage

where boys were trained for the trades and girls as singers and instrumental players. Under his

tutelage, the choir and orchestra of the orphanage became widely acclaimed in Europe. For his

fiery red hair, he was nicknamed ‘The Red Priest’.

Vivaldi achieved international fame with the publication of his first set of violin concertos in 1711

and the premiere of his first opera in 1713.

He reached the peak of his reputation and popularity with the creation in 1726 of a set of

concertos known as The Four Seasons, which is generally recognised as the first programmed

composition in classical music. In the 1720s, the composer began a close relationship with

soprano Anna Giro, for whom he wrote all the principal female lead roles in his mature operas,

including Griselda, which was premiered in Venice in May 1735.

▲ The cover of the vocal score of Liebesverbot drawn by Franz Stassen

The music of Griselda was set to a libretto by the great Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni, using

an older text as the basis of his plot. The central character is a woman with admirable virtues of

patience and loyalty. In a series of cruel tests, her royal husband tries her fidelity and endurance

to prove her worthiness as queen.

Our recording features mezzo-soprano Marion Newman in the title role, bass Giles Tomkins as

the King, soprano Carla Huhtanen as the Princess, and tenor Colin Ainsworth as a noble knight

of Thessaly. The Opera in Concert Aradia Ensemble is conducted by Kevin Mallon.

15 May : Ponchielli’s La Gioconda

For more than fifty years from the 1840s, the history of Italian opera was dominated by the

genius of Giuseppe Verdi. Amilcare Ponchielli (1834 - 1886) was one of the very few composers

who managed to create a work of distinction with lasting artistic value and popular appeal.

Such a work is La Gioconda, a romantic grand opera full of memorable melodies and brilliant

scenic effects.

Set to a libretto by Arrigo Boito based on Victor Hugo’s melodrama, La Gioconda tells the story

of a woman, a street ballad singer in Venice, who sacrifices her own life to enable her lover,

a Genovese nobleman and sea-captain, to be reunited with his former betrothed. There are

spectacular scenes of a Venetian carnival, the burning of a large ship, and the famous ballet,

‘The Dance of the Hours’.

Spanish diva soprano Monserrat Caballé, singing the title role, leads a fabulous cast including

Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, Greek mezzo-soprano Agnes Baltsa, American baritone Sherill

Milnes, and Bulgarian bass Nicolai Ghiaurov. Bruno Bartoletti conducts the London Opera

Chorus and the National Philharmonic Orchestra.

22 May : Wagner’s Liebesverbot

Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883) began his career at the age of 20 as Chorusmaster at the

theatre in Würzburg after studying at the University of Leipzig and taking lessons in harmony

with Theodor Weinlig. In that same year, he composed his first complete opera, Die Feen (The

Fairies), which imitated the style of Weber and Meyerbeer. It was never performed in Wagner’s

lifetime. A year later, in 1834, he took up appointment as Music Director at the opera house in

Magdeburg. There he wrote Das Liebesverbot (The Ban on Love), set to his own libretto based

on Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. This work was produced at Magdeburg in 1836. It

was a disastrous failure and closed after a single performance. It was not fully staged again until

2008 in the United States and has been heard only a few times, mainly as a curiosity.

In the absence of the king of Sicily on a state visit, the Regent Friedrich imposes a ban on love

to secure a better state of morals. Claudio, found guilty of breaking the law, is condemned to

death. His sister Isabella pleads for mercy and Friedrich hypocritically demands the price that

she gives herself to him. Isabella sends in her place Friedrich’s abandoned former mistress

Mariana. The villain’s duplicity is thus revealed, and a measure of free love is restored when the

king returns.

A radio studio recording made in 1963 will be played. Isabella is interpreted by soprano

Hilde Zadek, Claudio by tenor Anton Dermota, Friedrich by bass Heinz Imdahl, and

Marianna by soprano Christiane Sorell. The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation Chorus

and the Grand Orchestra of Radio Vienna perform under the baton of Robert Heger.

29 May : Alfano’s Risurrezione

The name of Franco Alfano (1876 - 1956) is likely to be permanently associated with

Puccini’s ever-popular but unfinished Turandot, which Alfano completed in 1926 with

a magnificent finale. Alfano himself was Italy’s leading composer in his own right who

enjoyed great success during his lifetime with several of his own works. A graduate of San

Pietro a Majella Conservatory of Naples, Alfano pursued further composition studies in

Leipzig. From 1918, he was Director of the Conservatory of Bologna, from 1923 Director

of the Turin Conservatory, and from 1947 to 1950 Director of the Rossini Conservatory

of Pesaro.

In 1902, Alfano was in Paris to compose two ballets for the Folies Bergère. While there

he saw a dramatization of Tolstoy’s Resurrection (Resurrection) that appealed to him

profoundly as a subject for an opera. He at once commissioned a libretto from Cesare

Hanau and set to work on the music, which he completed in 1904. The opera’s premiere in

Turin in November of that year was a resounding success and the work was given in many

cities of Europe and America with leading singers of the time. Its thousandth performance

was celebrated in Naples in 1951. A youthful work, Risurrezione is recognised as Alfano’s

masterpiece.

Katiusha, an innocent country girl, has been seduced by Prince Dimitri and is pregnant

with his child. She does not have the courage to confront the nobleman. After the death

of her baby, she falls into evil company and is unjustly condemned for prostitution and

murder. The remorseful Dimitri follows her to Siberia, obtains pardon and liberty for her

and proposes to marry her. Katiusha refuses, for she has found a new purpose in life in

helping her fellow-prisoners, and believes that only a total renunciation of their guilty past

can they find redemption and resurrection.

Katiusha is potrayed by famous Italian singing actress Magda Olivero; Prince Dimitri is

sung by tenor Giuseppe Gismondo. They perform with a large supporting cast of singers

and the Chorus and Orchestra of Radio Italiana Turin conducted by Elio Boncompagni.

In May’s Jazzing Up (Cantonese programme), Jackie Ip brings some big name jazz artists, including Ray Charles, Michael Brecker, and more recordings played by father-son group, to his Hong Kong jazz audience. Stay tuned every Sunday at 11pm.

Joshua Redman,

▲ Les Six at the Eiffel Tower (left to right) - Germaine Tailleferre, Francis Poulenc, Author Honneger, Darius Milhaud, (playwright) Jean Cocteau, and Georges Auric (1921)

MAY 2016 | FINE MUSIC | COLUMNS

Livia Lin

By the end of World War I, long-standing empires fell and

much of Europe was destroyed. When peace was finally restored

and the world rehabilitated, avant-garde ideas caught on with

European artists in the post-WWI era, challenging old-fashioned

theories such as romanticism, nationalism, and impressionism.

This new generation was inspired by progressive artists to

explore the emerging new styles. Coincidentally and ironically,

the heightened disparity in artistic directions at the dawn of the

20th century left a positive impact on the future of modern art.

Saturdays 5:00pm

In France at the turn of the century, composers such as Camille

Saint-Saëns and Claude Debussy established and defined

French classical music as neoclassical and impressionistic. While

their musical styles were unique, the composers also showed

the influence of late Romantic composers, particularly Richard

Wagner. There was one exception, however, Erik Satie, a close

friend of Debussy, who did not conform to these prevailing trends.

Having a deep aversion to the grandeur in Wagnerian style,

Satie deliberately composed humorous and light-hearted works,

bearing titles like Three Pieces in the Shape of a Pear, evidently

mocking the overly meticulous notions of others. Despite not

gaining popularity among the masses, Satie’s works were well-

received by younger composers, who showed admiration for his

eccentric musical approaches. In the late 1910s, Satie began to

gather these young composers in mutual artistic support, forming

the predecessor of Les Six, called Les nouveaux jeunes, with

himself as the mentor. These composers would later become

champions of new directions in French compositions.

In fact, it was another avant-garde advocate, French playwright

Jean Cocteau, who officially established Les Six in January 1920.

The six composers involved were Georges Auric, Louis Durey,

Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, and Germaine

Tailleferre. As the chief of Les Six, Cocteau, who wished to restore

candor and simplicity in French art, imposed this concept on

the group. However, as much as they belonged to a collective,

their artistic tastes were greatly dissimilar. Honegger lauded the

music of Wagner while most others found it distasteful. On the

other hand, Milhaud was an advocate of the work of Arnold

Schoenberg, which French audiences did not find pleasing.

With such divergence among the members, it is not hard to

imagine that the partnership of Les Six was short-lived and their

collaboration was minimal. The only joint-effort output involving all

six members was a set of short piano pieces titled L’Album des

Six. A year later, five members of Les Six collaborated again to

compose music for Cocteau’s ballet Les mariés de la tour Eiffel (The

Wedding Party on the Eiffel Tower). From then on, there were only

three more works produced, in which part the group participated in

collaboration with other composers outside of Les Six.

Nonetheless, the individual output of each ‘Les Six member’

was substantial. The effects on the 20th century avant-garde

movements left behind by these compositions, and that of Erik

Satie was abiding. John Cage, Marius Constant, and Philip

Glass, to name a few, were fueled by these French composers

to push the boundaries of creativity and stimulate modern music

in unique ways. The innovative spirit of Les Six and Erik Satie

continued to catalyse the development of music to date.

Relish the fruits of maturity. Erich Korngold and Gustav Mahler first met

as a child of nine and an acknowledged genius in his late 40s. Both

Korngold’s melancholy Violin Concerto and Mahler’s Das Lied von der

Rachel Lai

As a teenager, my curiosity was easily fulfilled thanks to the greatest

invention in the world: the internet. Through the internet I met my first

(virtual) boyfriend who lived half-way around the world and, to this day,

I don’t know what he looks like. Besides meeting friends, I also got to

explore a lot of new music genres through the internet. And when I

ultimately discovered jazz… it was much more exciting than having an

actual boyfriend.

Speaking of jazz, what intrigued me most was that sleek, handsome-

looking instrument: the alto saxophone. I personally think that

the sax is the most distinctive and

expressive instrument after human

voice. It could sound soulful and

mellow, bright and dazzling, or wild

and crazy. In the bossa nova song

Corcovado, ‘Quiet Nights of Quiet

Stars,’ by Tom Jobim, Stan Getz

even made his sax sound like an

elephant!

Not only was I a curious teenager, my

passions and impulsions were wild as

the wind. When my father said he would

reward me for getting a distinction in

my Grade 8 piano exam, guess what?

I asked for a saxophone. At last I

brought one home, but then public

exams were coming up shortly. Then I

went to college, then I studied abroad,

then I got a job…. Now it’s been over

10 years, and my beloved sax still lies

lonely in its case, little used and virtually

brand new.

In this year’s New Generation concert, the Hong Kong Saxophone

Ensemble has been invited to be the guest performer. With all the new

works written specially to highlight the instrument’s uniqueness by young

talented composers, my passion will surely be rekindled. Will I ever have

a ‘date’ with my saxophone?

The story is to be continued…

〈Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars〉

Saxophone Ensemble,
