Recently, three impressive shows were staged in RTHK Studio One. A Philadelphia – Hong Kong Encounter played host to four distinguished musicians from The Philadelphia Orchestra who joined with Hong Kong’s own RTHK Quartet. The chamber music concert was filmed and will be shown on RTHK TV 31 and 31A on 9 July (Sat) at 11pm. The second concert was the Artist-in-Residence recital of Zhang Ying. It was a friendly occasion when Zhang’s music partners gathered for an inspiringly varied programme that put the pipa into the limelight. The third concert was New Generation 2016 which this year saw seven new works written specially for the saxophone. You can listen again to these three Studio One shows on Radio 4’s website: www.rthk.hk/radio4.

Last month I mentioned Radio 4’s efforts in the promotion of new music. In fact, following ‘New Generation 2016’, the line-up goes on in July and August. This month, we welcome a group of primary and secondary school students to R4 Buddies to share their experiences in music composition as part of LCSD’s ‘New Energy of Wind and String’ A Music Composition Animateur Scheme. Of course, there is also the return of our annual global music composition showcase – the International Rostrum of Composers. Tune in for Tang Lok-yin’s insights as she discussed the many new works that she’s heard during her recent trip to Poland. Looking back to Hong Kong, you may like to know that Doming Lam will be 90 next month. On 29 August (Mon), you can hear a special concert entitled Doming Lam’s Piano Classics at AC Hall. Livia Lin tells you more in ‘Coda’.

Let’s give a round of warm applause to Sibei Weng as she takes the stage this month as our second featured ‘Artist-in-Residence’ this year. The gifted flautist has been associated with Radio 4 on a few occasions. She has appeared in Music of Friends and was soloist at the 2010 and 2013 ‘Christmas Concert in the Park’. Don’t miss her two recitals. In fact, you are most welcomed to be in her studio audience on 14 July (Thu)!

近日,一號錄播室舉行了三場精彩演出。在費城―香港‧音樂邂逅

中,四位來自費城樂團的優秀樂手,與香港電台弦樂四重奏同台

演出。音樂會視像版將於7月9日(星期六)晚上11時,在港台電視

31及31A播出。第二場是張瑩的駐台演奏家音樂會,這位出色的

琵琶好手與她的一群好友合作送上一套變化多端的曲目。第三場

是音樂新一代2016,當晚有為薩克管而譜寫的七首新作面世,想

上月,我曾經提及香港電台熱心推動現代音樂。事實上,繼「音

樂新一代」後,7、8月份我們還會陸續送上與新音樂有關的節

目。本月,一群參加康文署「管弦新動力」音樂創作培訓計劃的

中、小學生,會亮相四台插班生分享他們嘗試譜曲的心聲。此

外,當然不得不提每年為你呈獻的國際作曲家交流會議。今年

有鄧樂妍從波蘭帶來多首作品,為你揭示當今現代音樂創作的面

貌。至於香港方面,作曲大師林樂培將於8月慶祝九十大壽。8月

29日(星期一),你可以在大學會堂欣賞到樂培培樂―林樂培鋼

琴作品展演。凌崎偵在Coda中會提及是次盛會。

熱烈歡迎今年第二位「駐台演奏家」翁斯貝登場。第四台聽眾對

這位天才橫溢的長笛好手應該不會感到陌生。她曾亮相於「室樂

雅聚」,又分別於2010和2013年「聖誕園林音樂會」中擔任獨

奏。她為我們準備了兩套節目,7月14日(星期四)在一號錄播室的

現場演出,實在不容錯過。

A Philadelphia - Hong Kong Encounter費城 — 香港•音樂邂逅

On the evening of 18 May, four musicians from The Philadelphia Orchestra teamed

up with the RTHK Quartet at Studio One for an evening of chamber music. Lio Kuok-

man, Assistant Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra, who recorded his first piano

recital (Young Music Makers) for Radio 4 some ten years ago, opened the chamber

concert with Ricardo Morales, Principal Clarinettist of The Philadelphia Orchestra, in

the performance of Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, Op. 73.

They were followed by the RTHK Quartet, Le Hoai-nam (first violin), Winty Wan (guest

second violin), Elvis Chan (viola) and Laurent Perrin (cello), who joined Ricardo Morales

in a performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A, K. 581. Even with only one rehearsal

before the concert, their collaboration was perfect.

The finale of the chamber concert was Dvořák’s Piano Quintet, Op. 81, performed by

three members of The Philadelphia Orchestra and two members of the RTHK Quartet.

Lio Kuok-man was the pianist along with two players from The Philadelphia Orchestra,

Ying Fu (violin) and Burchard Tang (viola), and two members of RTHK Quartet Le Hoai-

nam and Laurent Perrin. The concert concluded with big smiles on both the musicians’

and the audience’s faces.

The chamber concert will be broadcast on RTHK TV 31 & 31A on 9 July (Sat) at 11pm.

5月18日晚上,香港電台一號錄播室人頭湧湧,到處都

是知音人。他們有的是費城樂團的擁躉、有的是廖國敏

的粉絲、有的是香港電台弦樂四重奏的忠實聽眾,更有

以上三項皆是的樂迷。當天,費城樂團的四位樂手,聯

同香港電台弦樂四重奏送上一次叫人難忘的演出。

廖國敏,澳門人,多年在香港生活和學習,十多年前在

香港電台首次錄音,演奏鋼琴。他對「樂壇新秀」節目

印象猶新。今天,他是費城樂團的助理指揮,鋼琴造詣

比當年更成熟,叫觀眾聽得如痴如醉。廖國敏在音樂會

先與費城樂團的單簧管首席里卡多•莫拉里斯合奏舒曼

的幻想曲,作品73。其後,香港電台弦樂四重奏的李

海南(第一小提琴)、雲凱弦(客席第二小提琴)、陳子信

(中提琴)和貝樂安(大提琴),與里卡多•莫拉里斯合奏

莫扎特的A大調單簧管五重奏。即使他們只能夠在音樂

會當天第一次見面和綵排,演奏仍然有高度的默契。音

樂會最後一首作品是德伏扎克的鋼琴五重奏,作品81。

廖國敏演奏鋼琴,加上由來自於費城樂團的傅贏(小提琴)、

鄧思恆(中提琴)和香港電台弦樂四重奏的李海南與貝樂

安所組成的室樂組合,博得全場觀眾掌聲。

這場音樂會將於7月9日(星期六)晚上11時在香港電台電

On 26 May at 8 pm, RTHK Studio One was packed with an enthusiastic audience. They had all come to see a virtuoso pipa player, Zhang Ying. She is a member of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and holds a master’s degree in pipa from the China Conservatory. Dressed in a bright red lace qipao, Zhang teamed up with her friends to perform six marvellous pieces, from traditional to modern compositions. There was also an autograph section after the concert, the audience was reluctant to leave!

5月26日晚上8時,香港電台一號錄播室擠滿了熱情的觀眾,他們都是為了琵琶演奏家張瑩而來。張瑩是香港中樂團的

樂師,又在中國音樂學院取得碩士學位。當晚她與一眾藝術家朋友為大家送上六首精選作品,其中有古曲,也有現代創

作。音樂會後在香港電台廣播大厦還有簽名會,依依不捨的觀眾再次把大堂擠得水洩不通呢!

Do you feel you made any breakthrough in this new composition? 是次創作有新突破嗎?

I made many breakthroughs, and had many ‘first’s! It was my first time writing for saxophones, first time completing an octet work, first time writing a fast dancing piece… and of course, my first commission! Please give me more commissions if you read this! Commissions certainly inspire breakthroughs!

有很多突破,有很多第一次。第一次為薩克管創作,第一次完成八件樂器的作品,第一次讓節奏熱烈舞動……更是第一次獲委約創作!希望有更多機會獲委約吧!委約很能啟發突破!

How well do you think the HKSE communicated your piece An Anticlimactic Bassdrop II? HKSE如何恰當地傳達你的作品〈走為上策II〉中的理念?

The HKSE did a reasonably good job. The motifs were expressed with the appropriate gestures and the (anti-)climaxes, being the paramount element, were handled sensitively. I would have to say though, with that the performance would have benefited with more structural articulation. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful experience working with the HKSE.

我十分滿意HKSE的表現。他們輕易地做到了各動機所需的音樂表情,並在最重要的元素―反高潮―中下了苦工;若結構上更為流暢便是錦上添花了。與HKSE合作可算是一次精彩的經驗。

When the ‘New Generation 2016’ concert took place on 2 June in RTHK Studio One, audience members heard

what happens when a young composer encounters the energetic Hong Kong Saxophone Ensemble (HKSE): great

music and heart-felt laughter resulted. Guided by our fun and engaging hosts Leanne Nicholls and Radio 4’s Raymond

Chung, we had an evening of musical discovery. Here our young and talented composers talk about their experience.

「音樂新一代2016」已於6月2日在一號錄播室舉行。年輕作曲家遇上活力充沛的Hong Kong Saxophone Ensemble,

再加上兩位生鬼司儀黎燕欣和鍾子豪,比賽在一片笑聲中完成!究竟一眾別具才華的作曲家對是次比賽有何感想?

What was your most unforgettable experience throughout the course of this competition? 是次比賽有甚麼最難忘的經歷?

To me, listening to others’ works was the most unforgettable experience. Composers at different universities have different concepts about writing pieces. Every composer has his/her own style of music composition.

令我最難忘的是可以欣賞其他參賽者的作品。來自不同院校的同學對創作的看法可以有很大分別,每位作曲家都有其獨特的創作風格。

What would you say are your creative goals for the future? 你期望在未來的創作路上有甚麼發展?

I would like to explore different styles and approaches to music composition so that I can gain more musical and technical vocabularies to express myself in the music.

我希望在未來能不斷嘗試寫作不同的風格,或者用不同的方式去創作,從而豐富自己的音樂詞彙和鍛練技巧及創意,使自己能更有效和有創意地在作品裡表達心中的想法。

What was the inspiration for your work? 是次創作靈感從何而來?

To me, the saxophone is the best instrument to depict and represent our Hong Kong voice. My piece, Clamor, was inspired by my experience of walking around Mongkok while listening to the noise and all our interactions as a whole soundscape.

對我而言,薩克管的聲音更加貼近我們香港人的聲音。這首作品〈喧〉刻劃了我對旺角街頭聲音的印象和幻想。

In one word, how would you describe your musical style? 你會利用那個字形容你的創作風格?

Colourful!

Composing is like painting. I love working on the harmony. In the middle of my work, Stormy Sea, parallel major block chords are used in the main melody with a ‘glissando’ accompaniment, producing a special tone colour.

「色彩洋溢」!

作曲就像繪畫。在〈驚濤駭浪〉的中段,主旋律用上平行大調和弦,再配合滑音的伴奏,製造了豐富的顏色。

What was it like to compose for a saxophone octet? 為薩克管八重奏作曲有難度嗎?

A gourmet once challenged different chefs with one egg; writing a saxophone octet was like cooking with eight eggs! With very few past ‘recipes’, to avoid being too plain and too eccentric at the same time is indeed challenging.

某食家曾以一隻蛋考驗名廚;薩克管八重奏就像用八隻蛋煮餸。過往「食譜」甚少;避免單調,同時別煮得蛋不似蛋,實屬一大挑戰。

Starting 3 July, Raymond Chung and I will present the latest new music compositions from all around the world in a series of nine episodes of ‘International Rostrum of Composers 2016’ (in Cantonese). In mid-May, I represented RTHK and the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild at the 63th ‘International Rostrum of Composers’ in Wrocław, Poland. Organised by the International Music Council, the Rostrum brought together 27 national radio networks from four continents to listen to the 55 new works that were written within the past five years. A selected work, plus another nine recommended works and the selections from the Young Composers’ Category will all be included in the radio programme.

Please tune in to Radio 4 every Sunday night at 8pm to experience the power of modern music!

今年5月,「國際作曲家交流會議」在波蘭城市弗羅茨瓦夫舉行。踏上旅途之前,我先後與香港作曲家聯會和香港電台第四台的同事商討

帶到歐洲的香港新音樂作品,讓本地年輕作曲家的創作有機會在世界各地的電台播放。

弗羅茨瓦夫是一個很美麗的古樸城市,藝術氛圍令人樂而忘返。在這裡跟一群熱愛新音樂的同業一起聽新作品,是一件賞心樂事。由國際

音樂理事會主辦的「國際作曲家交流會議」今年已經是第六十三屆,有全球來自二十七個國家和地區的電台代表,帶來五十五首新曲,所

有作品都是近五年內的創作。在一連五天的交流會議中,我們逐一欣賞這些錄音,逐一評分,又跟各與會代表交流分享,更參加了由大會

精心安排的活動,包括到瓦烏布日赫(Wałbrzych) 的克雄日城堡遊覽,以及出席新電子音樂節 (Musica Electronica Nova Festival) 的音樂

會。我十分享受這次難忘的音樂之旅。

這項每年一度的活動,讓不同國家的廣播組織代表匯聚一堂,分享現代音樂的錄音。一如以往,交流會議完結前由代表投票選出一首優勝

作品、九首推介之選,以及多首在年青作曲家組別得票最高的作品。這些樂曲將交由各代表帶回電台為各地的聽眾播放。由7月3日起,一

連九個星期日晚上8時,在「國際作曲家交流會議2016」節目裡,我和鍾子豪會介紹這些來自全球各地的精選新音樂,敬請收聽!

Young Music Makers Take Stage in Macau

Summer is a season for sunshine, the beach, cold drinks, travelling and … good music!

Seven Young Music Makers who joined the event last year, were selected by adjudicators Nancy Loo,

Christopher Pak, and Jimmy Shiu to perform this month in Macau at the unique Mandarin’s House.

These talented young players will take part in the MYSO Music Festival, organised by the Macau

Youth Symphony Orchestra. Representing some of the most outstanding performers of the younger

generation are: Chan Kai-him (huqin), Chan Tin-chi (guzheng), Cheung Wing-lam (soprano), Lee Kin-tat,

Alfred (horn), Leung Ka-lok (pipa), Liu Chi-man, Elise (marimba), and Liu Tung-bo (bassoon).

The recital will take place in the Mandarin’s House. It was built in 1869 by the father of the renowned

Chinese scholar, Zheng Guanying. Sun Yat-sen visited this mansion frequently to discuss politics with

Zheng Guanying. It was also where Zheng completed his masterpiece Words of Warning in Times of

Prosperity. This historic residential complex occupies an area of 4000m2 and is now listed as part of

the Historic Centre of Macau and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Mandarin’s House, where many

cultural events are held, is open to the public. It is a wonderful opportunity for our Hong Kong young

players to perform there. Hope to see you in Macau!

樂壇新秀耀濠江 林家琦

每年6至7月,都是莘莘學子畢業的月份。多位去年參

與「樂壇新秀」的年青演奏家,有的快要中學畢業,

亦有剛踏進社會大學的。在接受新挑戰前,七位新秀

將於本月10日到澳門,參加由澳門青年交響樂團主辦

的「青交音樂節」,與濠江的音樂愛好者分享美樂。

七位由「樂壇新秀」評判 ― 羅乃新、白得雲和蕭樹勝

挑選出來的演奏者,他們都是不同器樂和年齡界別的

精英份子,包括陳啟謙(胡琴)、陳天姿(古箏)、

張穎琳(女高音)、李建達(圓號)、梁家洛(琵琶)、

廖智敏(馬林巴琴)和廖冬保(巴松管)。

是次演出將安排在澳門龍頭左巷的鄭家大屋舉行。這

建築物已被列入澳門歷史城區和世界遺產名錄。面對

阿婆井前地的鄭家大屋,由中國近代名人鄭觀應的父

親始建,最早的建築日期可追溯至1869年。昔日孫

中山亦經常在這大宅與鄭觀應商論政事,而鄭觀應也

在此完成他的舉世名作《盛世危言》。鄭家大屋佔

地4000平方米,現對外開放,還不時舉行各種文化

活動。是次一眾本地樂壇新秀獲邀在這歷史建築物演

出,機會實在難得。屆時希望你能蒞臨支持!

多位參與是次演出的新秀,還會在7月16日亮相於「四

台插班生」節目,與聽眾分享演出點滴!

From Drought to Plenty

Think back 25 years or more to Hong Kong’s well-earned dubious reputation as a cultural desert.

Fast forward to today when there’s such a demand for performance space that it’s famously frustrating to hire a concert venue in the city.

25 years ago, who would have envisioned a time when there would be so many teen cellists crowding our subways with their instruments that the MTR would have to make special arrangements to move musicians and instruments from one end of town to another.

As recently as the turn of the 21st century, who would have believed that the Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic would be of such international renowned that he would also be the Music Director of the New York Philharmonic! Bravo to the vision of Y. S. Liu and the late Daniel Ng.

The Prize-Winning Idea

26 years ago, I was proposing that Hong Kong become home to an Asian Youth Orchestra. Many laughed. Many, many more shared our vision of the city as a regional arts hub. Funds were raised. Artists from around the world signed on. To date more than 25,000 young musicians in Hong Kong and beyond have auditioned for the now celebrated Asian Youth Orchestra, winner of Japan’s Praemium Imperiale and the Nikkei Asia Prize for Culture and Community.

Good on Hong Kong for making this possible to the benefit of a new generation of music teachers and performers who now collaborate across Asia and the world, inspiring yet the next generation of young musicians in this circle of life.

Who would have thought it possible? Hong Kong alive, well and flourishing as an Asian Cultural Arts Hub!

With apologies to Rogers and Hammerstein, the Hong Kong hills are alive with the sound of music.

Today’s Players and Tomorrow’s

While I might like to take some credit for this development, the real credit goes to the AYO alums who’ve seen what can be done when borders are crossed and they begin to share their knowledge and experiences with yet the next generation of youngsters aspiring to make music and have fun doing it.

And so, once again, for the 26th year and counting, the Hong Kong hills are alive with the sound of music. ‘Tis the season for the Asian Youth Orchestra.

The New Season Begins

As you read this story, 110 musicians are coming together in Hong Kong for AYO’s annual Rehearsal Camp and Summer Festival at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where we’re Orchestra in Residence.

18 are from Hong Kong, a remarkably inclusive number given the competition from countries and territories with much larger populations. 26 will be coming in from the mainland, 28 from Taiwan, 13 from Japan, 1 from Macau, 2 from Indonesia, 4 from Korea, 5 from Malaysia, 4 from the Philippines, 3 from Singapore, 5 from Thailand, and 1 from Vietnam.

Nine hours a day for three weeks they will have the privilege – if exhausting opportunity – to study with AYO’s outstanding artist-faculty of professionals from the Baltimore, Bergamo (Italy), Hamburg, Hong Kong, National, Venice and Leipzig orchestras, Brussels’ La Monnaie Opera, Milan’s La Scala, the opera theatres of Genoa and Vienna, and the Boston Conservatory.

No matter how you look at it, these are some mighty high profile world class musicians from world class trend setting organisations. Imagine the opportunity to study with Claudio Abbado’s Concertmaster, the Monnaie Opera’s legendary Concertmaster, or the Concertmaster of Hamburg’s NDR. And these are just the violin coaches!!!

It was an extraordinary experience to play with 600 people all together in the Orchestra and choir for AYO’s 25th anniversary concert last year!! The Beethoven Symphony #9 was amazing!!!

Once again music brought us together. No matter how long it’s been since we’ve seen each other or a new friend we just met, there is no distance when we are making music together as one!

AYO is truly something that most of the people will never forget in their life, the love and the life experienced here is just going to make you a better musician and a better human being!

Six weeks living with music. I could see exactly how much more I want

to be as a musician, a violinist. AYO opened a deeper and wider way of

feeling the music, teaching me so many things about music and orchestra

playing that no one told me before.

AYO has given me many friends from far corners of East and Southeast

Asia, with many different cultures, different languages, but having the

same passion for music. We have built beautiful friendships, shared a lot

of things together, and they have given me inspiration in playing music

too.

It means so much for me, my family, my school, and my country. And

just for me, AYO gave me many laughs and tears, as well as excitement,

exhaustion, nervousness, happiness, and surprises.

23 years! It is a long time and many good things happen in my life,

When I saw Mr. Pontzious facing me in person again, it took me back

to the beginning of my AYO experience in the blink of an eye. It made

me able to see the path of my life with all the details in it. No matter

how I see my life, everything is rooted back to AYO and the audition

in 1992 in Hanoi. It was the only turn in my life that led to where I am

today! My greatest fortune was to have met Mr. Pontzious and AYO.

A Showcase of Music and Talent

AYO’s repertoire this year will highlight the brilliance of virtually every member of the Asian Youth Orchestra. From the relaxed, cheerful moods of Antonín Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony to the waltz in 5/4 time (introduced by the cello section) to the deeply moving finale of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, the Pathétique, our programme on 6 August, under the direction of Maestro James Judd, is a study in contrast and gorgeous colours. Listen especially to the viola section lead in to the first movement Allegro, the clarinet solo in the Adagio mosso, and the powerful brass of the third movement theme.

Our 5 August performance of Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man will showcase the brilliance of our brass and percussion sections. The elegant sounds of our AYO strings and the many woodwind and string solos in Copland’s Appalachian Spring will tear at your heart. I feel quite sure that you won’t want to miss our voyage through The Planets of Gustav Holst. Not an astronomical voyage, you understand, but an astrological voyage of discovery requiring the full force of our 110 AYOers and the 24-member women’s chorus required for the closing moments of Holst’s Neptune.

Our Hong Kong concerts will kickoff our annual three-week concert tour, taking us from Hong Kong to Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai, to Singapore and Hanoi, to Taipei and Chiayi City (Taiwan), to Nagoya, Ayase, and Tokyo, Japan. We will be performing 18 concerts in 27 days. In Japan, the performers will have the benefit of homestays in Ayase that will introduce Japanese life to our members.

Learning to Love Music

Again and again we’re asked what it is that makes AYO so special, what sets this ‘Hong Kong family of musicians’ apart from other orchestras. To answer that question we are delighted to share a few comments from our members.

It is raining heavily. A languid morning on the day of the interview. But I am slowly enlivened when I see Sibei, she

is looking radiant, despite having taken the 9am ferry from Macau to Hong Kong. She lives in Macau, but comes to

Hong Kong often. I cannot resist asking: is it tiring to travel back and forth so frequently between these two places?

‘A bit tough at the beginning when I was not used to being on the ferry, but I’m used to it now. I like Hong Kong

very much. It’s a vibrant city and I have many friends here. So I feel very happy every time when I come, no matter

what weather. I just love this destination.’ She also adds that she would put the one-hour travel time to good use,

arranging her schedule and sorting out her thoughts. Sibei always has the ability to see the bright side of things.

The Happy School Years

Her optimistic personality, I believe, must have helped her through the highly rigorous musical training. She started

learning the piano at four, and started to learn the flute only after entering the elementary section of the Shanghai

Conservatory of Music. After that, she took off to Germany, studying with and being mentored by numerous

maestros including Karlheinz Zoeller, András Adorján, the legendary Aurèle Nicolet, Andreas Blau, Emmanuel

Pahud, and Michael Hasel. She gained her Meisterklasses Diploma, after graduating from the Berlin University of

the Arts and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Munich. The years of study were not without difficulties, but

she remembered them as happy days rather than anything difficult.

Music Has To Be Natural

Sibei’s father had very much to contribute to her optimism. This ‘noble, righteous and

optimistic person’ — as how she described him — not only taught her life principles,

but has also had immense influence on her music. Weng Zhenfa is her father’s name

and is a renowned sheng virtuoso. He often emphasises to her the importance of the

‘breath’. ‘He shows great respect to the law of universe and the law of nature. The most

unforgettable thing he has told me is: technique has to be natural, so does music.’

Sibei is fully convinced of this, and so when I ask why there are only so few Chinese

flautists in the world’s greatest orchestras and if the Chinese are more disadvantaged in

playing the flute, she replies very surely, ‘This has certainly nothing to do with race.’ She

analyses that the Chinese did not have a sufficiently systematic approach of teaching

good technique and, in turn, the ‘breath’. Here she makes an interesting suggestion

that the Chinese could actually be easier to excel in flutes, ‘because we are spiritual and

meditative and have been practising the martial art of qi gong (the working of air) from

ancient times. We have very good understanding of it.’ She herself has set an excellent

example of that, her virtuosic flute playing earning her prizes from international contests

including the famous ARD International Music Competition, Munich, and admittance to

the prestigious Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Academy as the first Chinese woodwind

player in the Berlin Philharmonic’s history. She can surely rival her Western counterparts.

訪問當天早上,大雨滂沱,委實令人提不起勁。不過當我和翁斯貝坐下,看見她容光煥發的樣子,我也精神抖擻起來。

她乘早上9時的船從澳門到來,我問現時定居澳門的她,經常往返港、澳累不累?「一開始是有點辛苦,因為不適應船的

感覺,但現在已經習慣了。香港是我非常喜歡的一個地方,很豐富多彩,這裡也有很多朋友,所以每一次到香港來,不管

是怎麼樣的天氣,我的心情總是很好,因為很喜歡這個目的地。」她還告訴我,在一小時船程裡可以準備行程、整理思路

等,其實還頗實用。翁斯貝總是能看見事情美好的一面。

樂觀的學習年代

樂觀的性格,相信為翁斯貝在嚴格的音樂訓練中提供了不少優勢。她四歲學鋼琴,考入上海音樂學院附屬小學後才接觸長

笛,其後遠赴德國,拜師於多位長笛大師包括卓拿、亞多楊、尼高利、布勞、巴活、希素爾等。她畢業於德國柏林藝術大

學和慕尼黑高等音樂學院,更獲頒德國「大師班最高文憑」。學習過程並非沒有困難,但回想起來,她更認為那是一段很

快樂的日子。

講求氣息 講求自然

翁斯貝的樂觀個性,爸爸佔很大功勞,她形容爸爸「正直樂觀,品格高尚」,除了在為人處事上教導她,更在音樂方面給

她深遠影響。翁爸爸翁鎮發是吹奏笙的大師級演奏家,教懂她「氣息」的重要。「他是非常尊重宇宙自然法則的人,印象

最深的是他一直跟我說:『方法一定要自然,音樂也是一樣。』」翁斯貝深信這點,所以當我提出:為何在世界頂級樂團

的華人長笛樂師很少?華人在吹奏長笛方面是否比較吃虧?翁斯貝毫不懷疑地回答,「跟人種肯定沒有關係」,關鍵在於

以往中國沒有一套系統,教導好的吹奏方法,而方法歸根究底與「氣息」相連。與其說華人吃虧,她更認為華人吹長笛可

能更出色,「因為我們中國人是非常有靈性,也是非常有悟性的人,而且我們自古以來就有氣功、氣息,研究得很透徹。」

我非常同意,翁斯貝就是很好的例子,一流的長笛演奏為她贏得著名的慕尼黑ARD國際音樂大賽獎項,她更曾經獲選入享

負盛名的柏林愛樂樂團學院,成為柏林愛樂樂團歷史上首名華人木管樂手,與西人樂手絕對能夠分庭抗禮。

兩場豐富節目

翁斯貝曾於2010和2013年在第四台「聖誕園

林音樂會」亮相,分別與管弦樂團和管樂隊合

作,令樂迷印象深刻。本月的兩場「駐台演奏

家」節目轉轉口味,她將會以獨奏和室樂形式

與聽眾分享音樂。錄音音樂會於7月7日(星期

四)晚上8時播放,當中邀得香港鋼琴家曾捷麗

同台,曲目網羅多個時代、多種風格的作品,

由長笛版本的貝多芬「春天」奏鳴曲,到法國

作曲家慕其的經典奏鳴曲「牧神的長笛」,其中

亦有巴赫的A小調無伴奏組曲,與現場音樂會

中C.P.E.巴赫的A小調無伴奏奏鳴曲正好互相

呼應。現場音樂會則於7月14日(星期四)晚上

8時舉行。當晚,選來當代中國作曲家黃安倫

的「舞詩」,以及英國作曲家莫爾一首富爵士

韻味的作品,更有澳門樂團大提琴首席呂佳加

入,聯同曾捷麗送上德布西和韋伯精彩的長

笛、大提琴與鋼琴三重奏。

面對這麼多要準備的曲目,翁斯貝的態度是:

寓工作於娛樂。「音樂的世界非常美好,就算

是下輩子讓我再選的話,我必定再選音樂。」

翁斯貝對音樂的熱愛,是那麼的自然而然,是

一種快樂。

Two Programmes of Wide-ranging Repertoire

Many listeners must still remember Sibei’s impressive

performances with an orchestra and a wind band

in Radio 4’s ‘Christmas Concert in the Park’ in 2010

and 2013. After these grand settings, she turns to solo

and chamber intimacy in the two programmes of this

month’s ‘Artist-in-Residence’. She is joined by the

equally impressive Hong Kong pianist Cherry Tsang

in her recorded programme broadcast on 7 July (Thu)

at 8pm, which is made up of pieces from various eras

and styles, from an arrangement of Beethoven’s ‘Spring’

Sonata, Mouquet’s classic ‘La Flûte de Pan’, to Bach’s

unaccompanied Partita in A minor, an echo of this is his

son C.P.E. Bach’s Sonata in A minor, also unaccompanied,

which will appear in the live concert on 14 July (Thu). In

addition, the live evening concert includes works with

Chinese and jazz ambiences by contemporary composer

Huang Anlun and British composer Mike Mower. Lu Jia,

Principal Cello of the Macao Orchestra, will join Sibei and

Cherry Tsang in trios by Debussy and Weber.

And that means a lot of pieces to prepare. But Sibei thinks

the work is fun. ‘The world of music is so wonderful. If I am

given the chance to choose again in my next life, music

will still be my choice.’ Sibei’s love of music is a most

inherent and natural one, and one that makes her happy.

The Ringstrasse in Vienna is one of the most magnificent boulevards in the world – a concentration of architecturally stunning buildings, palaces, and parks. The ‘Ring’ is 5.3 kilometres of sheer extravagance built towards the end of the 19th century. This iconic boulevard boasts a number of grand buildings built in a range of old-world styles. It has been labelled the consummate expression of Viennese urbanism. Today, the buildings that stand there – from the Vienna State Opera to the Museum of Fine Arts - are among the most impressive sights in the city of Vienna.

The State Opera was the first building of importance to be completed on the boulevard in 1869, built in the style of the Neo-Renaissance. Majestically gracing the Ring Boulevard, the Vienna State Opera is indisputably one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. In April, May, June, and September, many opera and ballet performances are screened live on Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz in front of the building on a 50m² screen for all to see and hear for free.

Vienna was already the music capital of the world at the time of the Ringstrasse, and music continued to flourish – from the waltzes and operettas of the Strauss dynasty and Franz Léhar, to Gustav Mahler, who as Director, revolutionised the Vienna Court Opera (before it became the Vienna State Opera) - to the modernity of Arnold Schönberg.

Statues of Goethe (whose poetry was set to music by almost every major Austrian and German composer from Mozart to Mahler), Schiller (whose Ode to Joy appears in the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth and who was Schubert’s initial inspiration as a composer of songs), and Mozart (arguably the most gifted musician in the history of classical music) also grace the ‘Ring’.

The Burgtheater (National Theatre) was built in the New Baroque style. With its distinguished company, it has held a leading position in the dramatic arts of the German-speaking countries.

Recent productions from the famed Vienna State Opera …

On 5 July, the first performance of a new production of Janáček’s The Makropulos Affair at the Vienna State Opera with Jakub Hrůša making his VSO conducting debut (recording date 13 December 2015). It is all about the recipe for a secret potion that will extend the life of one who drinks it. Emilia, now 337 years old and still young and beautiful, has made frequent use of this potion. However, she now realises that immortality does not bring human fulfilment, for it is only the finiteness of life that makes it precious.

On 12 July, Janáček’s Jenůfa will be performed for the first time in its original Czech language at the Vienna State Opera (recording date 10 April 2016). Jenůfa depicts an introspective rural community whose rules and traditions governing one’s place in its society lead to violence and murder. Jenůfa is expecting Števa’s child, but has so far managed to keep it a secret. Števa’s stepbrother, the farmhand Laca, also loves Jenůfa. In a fit of jealous rage, Laca slashes Jenůfa’s face, ruining the beauty that enabled her to win Števa. Jenůfa gives birth to her child in secret at the house of her stepmother Kostelnička. Števa ignores Kostelnička’s pleas to acknowledge the child as his son. Laca is now her only hope: he has long since asked for forgiveness for his misdeed, and would be prepared to take in Jenůfa. However, he is appalled to learn that she has had a child by Števa. Kostelnička hatches a shocking plan …

In addition to Puccini’s Tosca on 19 July, and Manon Lescaut on 2 August, Puccini’s Turandot on 26 July will be heard in a new production with Gustavo Dudamel making his VSO debut (on 28 April 2016, recording date 5 May 2016). In his last, unfinished opera, Giacomo Puccini once again takes up the theme of love and death - on the one hand Turandot, for whose love men have to die, and on the other Liù, who dies for love. Between them is Calaf, who solves the riddle and overcomes Turandot.

普魯斯事件》。劇中的愛瑪利亞因服了長生不老藥活了三百多歲,然而她發現不

朽、有限的人生更是寶貴。這齣是維也納國家歌劇院的全新製作,亦是指揮家哈

魯沙在歌劇院的首次亮相。

今年4月,捷克語版楊納傑克的作品《耶奴法》在維也納國家歌劇院首演。7月

12日的節目將帶大家重溫這場演出。《耶奴法》講述農村姑娘耶奴法悲喜交集

的愛情故事,情節包含著愛恨、暴力和謀殺。耶奴法起初經歷與斯泰瓦的失敗愛

情,卻為他生下兒子。劇情發展下去錯綜複雜,最後釀成悲劇結局。

浦契尼名作《托斯卡》將在7月19日的節目中播出。這位意大利知名作曲家的另

一部作品《曼儂•雷斯高》亦安排在8月2日播放。在7月26日的節目裡,有杜達

美在維也納國家歌劇院首次亮相,指揮全新製作浦契尼的歌劇《杜蘭朵》。《杜

蘭朵》是浦契尼最後一齣作品,講述杜蘭朵公主、卡拉夫王子和侍女柳兒之間跌

宕起伏的故事,愛與死亡的主題貫穿始終。

Wong Wai-ming was one of the Founders of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in 1989 and the first Concertmaster, a position he held for 10 years. He was also a teacher of violin and viola at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) from 1996. In addition to his activities in the realm of classical music he was a familiar pop soloist. Cantopop music lovers in the millions heard him play. He was the most sought-after soloist in pop releases and concerts in Hong Kong, working closely with Joseph Koo, Paula Tsui, Jacky Cheung, and others. The beautiful solo passages in the Cantopop music recordings of Half Moon Serenade, Do You Know I am Waiting for You? and many more were played by him. Despite his being always in demand, he always kept himself ‘low profile’. We called him ‘Ah Ming’ – Wong Wai-ming.

On 31 May, Wong Wai-ming died at the age of 58. Cellist Ray Wang, a colleague of Wong at the HKAPA and a friend who he had known ‘Ah Ming’ for over 30 years, said that Wong withdrew from their yearly performance last year due to his deteriorating eyesight. Wang described him as ‘generous’, explaining that the versatile musician not only donated money to set up the first chamber music scholarship in the HKAPA, but also devoted his time to various musical fields. ‘He was quiet, but [his presence] was felt throughout all of us. He had many friends…,’ said Wang.

Over the years, Wong also helped many students develop into accomplished musicians. Matthew Leung, currently a music teacher in St. Paul’s College, studied with Wong for 13 years. ‘Quite often Mr. Wong told us that giving a good performance is not a matter of the violin quality, but the tone control. And that is why Mr. Wong never chose any branded European violin. Yet his tone colour was often sweet and sonorous.’ He also pointed out that Mr. Wong was willing to provide his students guidance and a lot of performing opportunities.

Wong is dearly missed by his family, colleagues, students and music lovers.

黃衛明是1989年香港小交響樂團的創團成員之一,擔任了首任樂團團長達十年。他自

1996年於香港演藝學院教授小提琴和中提琴。除了古典音樂之外,無數粵語流行曲愛

好者都曾不經意地欣賞過他的演奏。他是流行樂壇上最炙手可熱的小提琴手之一,曾

灌錄過多張流行音樂唱片,並參與如顧嘉煇、徐小鳳和張學友等演唱會。在〈月半小

夜曲〉、〈你知道我在等你嗎?〉等粵語流行曲的錄音中,優美的提琴部份都是由他

演奏。縱使他無人不曉,為人卻十分低調。人人稱他「阿明」— 黃衛明。

黃衛明於5月31日離世,享年五十八歲。同於香港演藝學院授課的大提琴家王磊認識

黃衛明超過三十年,他稱每年會與黃氏合作,但去年黃氏卻因為視力減退而影響演

出。王磊以「慷慨」形容黃衛明,除了捐獻金錢成立學院的首個室樂獎學金,黃氏亦

毫不吝嗇地在不同音樂範疇花費心力。王磊表示「他為人文靜,但總在我們心中佔上

重要地位。他擁有很多朋友……。」

黃氏桃李滿門,多年來培育了不少出色的音樂家。現於聖保羅書院擔任音樂老師的梁

承恩,師隨黃衛明十三年,他表示:「黃老師常說演奏水準的高低並不在於小提琴的質

量,而是在於對音色的控制。因此他演奏時選用的並不是甚麼歐洲名琴,但拉奏出的音

色卻非常甜美,鏗鏘有力。」他亦指出黃老師經常提攜後輩,給予他們很多演出機會。

黃氏的家人同事和學生均十分懷念他。第四台向他的家人致以深切慰問。

Our July listing consists of two Italian works of early 20th century, one extremely popular and the other virtually unknown. They

are complemented by three comedies in French, German, and Russian of distinctly different character and style.

3 July : Puccini’s Madama Butterfly

Exoticism was an important ingredient in the recipes of success of many opera composers of the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of the best works produced in that period were set to stories with Africa, the Middle East, India, Sri Lanka, and other remote countries as background. By the beginning of the 20th century, interest was extended to China and Japan. Of the latter, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, Messager’s Madame Chrysantheme, Mascagni’s Iris, and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly are outstanding examples.

Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924) cherished Madama Butterfly as the favourite among his own operas, describing it as his most deeply-felt and inspired creation. It is a highly focussed intimate psychological drama, full of carefully observed motivations and the poetry of small, delicate things. The quality of its music is very high on the technical level, especially in the continuous flow of melodies, ingenious harmony and innovative orchestral texture. It contains the most beautiful aria for soprano, the most passionate love duet, and the most poignant death scene among all Puccini operas.

The US naval lieutenant Pinkerton takes a Japanese wife, Cio-Cio San, whom he calls ‘Butterfly’. After a brief period living together in Nagasaki, he returns home, leaving her pregnant with a child. Pinkerton has been away for three years and the American Consul Sharpless brings Butterfly news of his long-awaited return. Upon arrival, Pinkerton comes with his new American wife expecting to take his young son to his home country. Cio-Cio San agrees to give up the child if Pinkerton would come to receive him later that day. As the remorseful naval officer arrives at the house, she cuts her own throat with her father’s harakiri knife.

The recording to be presented by Rupert Chan features an excellent Italian cast led by fabulous soprano Renata Tebaldi in the title role, tenor Carlo Bergonzi as Pinkerton, mezzo-soprano Fiorenza Cossotto as Butterfly’s faithful servant Suzuki, and baritone Enzo Sordello as Consul Sharpless. The chorus and orchestra of the Santa Cecilia Academy of Rome perform under the baton of Tullio Serafin.

10 July : Respighi’s Belfagor

A generation younger than Puccini, Ottorino Respighi (1879 - 1936) was a violist, composer, musicologist, and pedagogue. He was acknowledged to be the first Italian composer after Domenico Scarlatti whose reputation does not rest solely on opera. He became internationally famous for his trilogy of great orchestral tone-poems: The Fountains of Rome (1916), The Pines of Rome (1924), and Roman Festivals (1929); and he was recognised as one of the most brilliant orchestrators of his generation, having perfected his craft after a brief period of study in 1900 with Rimsky-Korsakov in St Petersburg.

Respighi was appointed as professor of composition at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Rome in 1913, holding the post for twenty-three years until his death at 56 in 1936, during which time he also served as Director of the Conservatory for three years from 1923 to 1926. Amidst his busy teaching duties, Respighi found time to compose some 35 orchestral tone-poems, suites and concertos; 13 choral, cantata, and vocal solo pieces; and 17 chamber and instrumental solo works and sonatas. For the stage, he produced five ballets and nine operas, of which Belfagor, a comedy in two acts with a prologue and an epilogue, is his fifth. It premiered at La Scala of Milan in 1923 with considerable success. The work, however, has been rarely performed in subsequent years.

Belfagor had its origins in the form of a short novel by the Renaissance Florentine political philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli. It was adapted into a stage comedy by Luigi Morselli and then re-written as a libretto for Respighi by Claudio Guastalla. The protagonist, Belfagor, is an archdevil sent to the human world by

Satan. His mission is to discover if marriage, the union between man and woman, is truly a hell for mankind, as so many people arriving in the afterworld claim. To accomplish his task Belfagor, disguised as a nobleman with a lot of money at his disposal, has to find a wife and spend ten years with her. The plot evolves around Belfagor’s experience as husband to the young Candida who maintains a close relationship with her former sweetheart Baldo. Only a miracle can resolve the complicated situation.

The title role is interpreted by baritone Lajos Miller, Candida is portrayed by celebrated soprano Sylvia Sass, and Baldo the lover is sung by tenor Giorgio Lamberti. The Hungarian Radio and Television Chorus and the Hungarian State Orchestra perform under the direction of Lamberto Gardelli.

17 July : Massenet’s Chérubin

Between 1773 and 1791, the multi-talented French playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais wrote three plays that evolve around the clever, quick-witted, and enterprising character named Figaro. The first, The Barber of Seville, was adapted into an extremely popular opera-buffa by Gioacchino Rossini. The second, The Marriage of Figaro, through the marvellous music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the brilliant libretto of Lorenzo da Ponte, became one of the greatest operas ever written. As for the third, The Guilty Mother, a number of attempts had been made by later composers but none succeeded in making any impact on the operatic repertoire.

In mid-1902, Jules Massenet (1842 - 1912) attended a performance of Le Chérubin, a new play by Francis de Croisset. He immediately asked the author for the rights to set it to music and reached an agreement with Croisset on the same day with regard to the new opera’s structure, plot, milieu and other details. The 60-year old composer set to work with unusual enthusiasm. Since his youth, Massenet had acquired the habit of rising early and composing from 4 in the morning till midday. For Le Chérubin, he was known to work no fewer than 12 hours a day, and sometimes more. The music was completed in late 1903, and the opera was premiered in Monte Carlo in February 1905 with remarkable success.

The plot of Croisset’s comedy is a light-hearted extension of Beaumarchais’s original Figaro plays. The central character, Chérubin, is the same Cherubino of Mozart’s masterpiece. The action takes place soon after the wedding of Figaro and Susanna. There are festivities in celebration of Cherubino’s 17th birthday and first military commission. A farcical romp ensues, brought on by Cherubino lusting after each of the female characters and causing chaotic confusion.

This opera contains some of Massenet’s most shimmering, charming music and has encouraged a number of important revivals and recordings in recent years. In the edition we are presenting for your enjoyment, the title role is interpreted by mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade; Chérubin’s tutor, the Philosopher, is sung by bass Samuel Ramey; the Spanish dancer L’Ensoleillad, with whom Chérubin is infatuated, is portrayed by coloratura soprano June Anderson; and Nina, Chérubin’s true love, is performed by soprano Dawn Upshaw. The Bavarian State Opera Chorus and the Munich Radio Orchestra participate under the baton of Pinchas Steinberg.

24 July : Nicolai’s Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor (The Merry Wives of Windsor)

Otto Ehrenfried Nicolai (1810 - 1849) was born in Konigsberg, Germany. He showed exceptional musical talent at an early age. Resentful of being exploited as a child prodigy, he tried to escape from home several times and finally succeeded at the age of 16. He worked as an itinerant pianist making his way to Berlin where he began his serious study of music under the distinguished teacher Carl Zelter.

Following initial success as pianist and composer, Nicolai accepted appointment as Music Master at the Prussian Embassy in Rome, where he began to compose operas set to Italian librettos in the bel canto style modelled on Bellini. In 1841, he moved to Vienna to be the Principal Conductor of the Hofoper. It was largely through his efforts and guidance that the Vienna Philharmonic was established. In 1848, he completed Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor (The Merry Wives of Windsor), his only opera set to a German text. The work had its premiere in March 1849 in Berlin. It was a resounding success and Nicolai was invited to accept appointment as Hofkapellmeister of the Berlin Staatoper. On 11 May 1849, only two days after he assumed office, he collapsed and died from a stroke. On the very same day of his death, he was elected a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts. He was only 39 years of age.

Solomon Mosenthal’s libretto for The Merry Wives of Windsor follows the plot of Shakespeare’s comedy faithfully. The enormous fat knight, Sir John Falstaff, imagines he could win the love of both Mistress Ford and Mistress Page simultaneously. The two ladies work out a plan to punish their arrogant wooer, first by dumping him into the Thames; then forcing him to flee in a servant-maid’s clothes; and finally making him suffer the pinching and beating by youngsters disguised as elves and fairies.

The role of Falstaff is assumed by bass Karl Ridderbusch, that of Mistress Ford by soprano Helen Donath, Mistress Page by mezzo-soprano Trudeliese Schmidt, and Master Ford by baritone Wolfgang Brendel. The Chorus and Symphony Orchestra of Radio Bavaria perform under the direction of Rafael Kubelik.

31 July : Shchedrin’s Dead Souls

Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin (b. 1932) created a highly original re-orchestrated version of Bizet’s Carmen Suite for a ballet commissioned by his wife, prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, which was first performed at the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre in March 1967. In scoring this work, Shchedrin replaced the entire woodwind and brass sections with four large batteries of percussion instruments producing an extraordinary range of sounds in novel combinations. He also introduced in his treatment of Bizet’s melodies and rhythms ingenious touches of humour and surprise. The Suite made the composer instantly famous in the West as many top-ranking orchestras competed to feature it in their programmes.

Shchedrin, now 83, enjoys an enviable reputation as Russia’s foremost living composer, with an impressive list of works comprising volumes of symphonies, concertos, orchestral suites and pieces, chamber and instrumental ensembles, vocal, and choral music. He is among the most decorated and honoured musicians both under the former Soviet and the present Federation regimes. For the stage, he has written so far 5 ballets, one musical comedy, and 6 operas, of which Dead Souls is the second in this particular genre.

Based on Nikolai Gogol’s novel in poetic prose, Dead Souls is a politico-social satire criticising the corrupt practice in Tsarist feudal Russia whereby a wealthy landowner could purchase the identities of serfs whose recent deaths had not yet been recorded in the census, thus increasing the face value of his possessions. In those days, the number of serfs under one’s ownership was counted as part of one’s wealth, and wealth equalled power and influence. The plot of the opera describes the experience of the protagonist Pavel Chichikov and the characters he encounters as he travels around the country collecting dead serfs’ souls to be sold for profit to landowners who covet such possessions. Shchedrin imbues his score with satirical humour and biting sarcasm true to the spirit of Gogol’s original novel.

We shall play for you a Moscow Bolshoi recording featuring baritone Alexander Voloshilo in the role of Pavel Chichikov. His clients in the dead souls trade are sung by mezzo-sopranos Larisa Avdeyeva and Galina Borisova, tenors Vitaly Vlasov and Vladislav Pyavko, and baritone Boris Morozov. They are supported by the Moscow Chamber Chorus and the Chorus and Orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow. Yuri Temirkanov is the conductor.

放暑假,同學又怎能錯過去「camp」的機會呢?一如以往,節目團隊7、8月份將遊走港九新界,分別到訪亞洲青年管弦樂團在

香港演藝學院的音樂營,又會到康文署的渡假營舍,探訪每年一度音樂事務處的「夏日音樂營」。這兩個充滿音樂氣氛的夏日

營,每年吸引不少來自亞洲各國和本地年輕音樂好手參與。營內每天從日出到日落進行排練,十分充實,讓樂手發掘箇中樂趣和

滿足感。這也引證為何大部份學員每年再度報名,盡情享受這段艱苦而又難忘的菁葱歲月!

New music works and interviews are scheduled in R4 Buddies (in Cantonese) for the summer, with a special treat on 17 July of the highlights of LCSD’s ‘New Energy of Wind and String’ A Music Composition Animateur Scheme this year. Also, our Buddies will visit the two of the most important and exciting summer music camps: the Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) Rehearsal Camp and Music Office’s Summer Music Camp.

Scaling New Heights in Zheng Music

With over 2,500 years of history, the zheng is still an important instrument in the world of Chinese music. Generation after generation of musicians have contributed to its advancement, developing the instrument, and enriching its repertoire. In this concert, renowned zheng virtuoso Wang Zhongshan showcases a variety of zheng music ranging from solo and trio, to ensemble and concerto. He performs classics including Dance of the Yi’s, In the Deep of the Night, and He Zhanhao’s Sad Memories of Lin’an with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, joined by zheng player Luo Jing and the Hong Kong Professional Zheng Ensemble. Sunwook Kim Plays Brahms

Praised for his ‘great naturalness’ and ‘infectious energy’ (Gramophone), pianist Sunwook Kim first captured international attention when he won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2006, playing Brahms’ magnificent Piano Concerto No. 1. This is the piece he revisits with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta under the baton of Alexander Liebreich, who is hailed as one of the most exciting conductors of his generation. Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony, inspired by the famous Rhine river, brings the

programme to a rousing close.

誰與「箏」鋒

古箏擁有超過二千五百年歷史,經過無數時代變遷、發展和改良,至今

依然在中國音樂佔上重要席位。在這場音樂會中,被譽為「箏壇聖手」

的古箏大師王中山,將聯同閻惠昌指揮的香港中樂團、箏演奏家羅晶與

箏音樂,帶來古箏獨奏、三重奏、小組合奏和協奏曲多種形式的演出,

曲目包括經典的〈彝族舞曲〉、〈夜深沉〉、何占豪的〈臨安遺恨〉

等,呈現誰與「箏」鋒的本色。

布拉姆斯第一鋼琴協奏曲

《留聲機》雜誌盛讚韓裔鋼琴家金善昱的演奏「質樸自然,能量勢不可擋」,他於2006年在享負盛名的里茲國際鋼琴

比賽中贏得冠軍,一舉成名。當年演出的比賽曲目 ― 布拉姆斯第一鋼琴協奏曲,將會在他和香港小交響樂團合作下

再度上演,夥拍當今其中一位最炙手可熱的指揮李布拉赫同台演出。此外,舒曼因萊茵河而得啟發創作「萊茵」交響

曲,樂曲把音樂會推向高潮迭起的尾聲。

Enjoy the unique essence of French music in this evening with maestro Yan Pascal Tortelier, best known for his impressive interpretation of the French repertoire. Under his baton, the Hong Kong Philharmonic performs Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales and Debussy’s famous Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Hong Kong Children’s Choir Pre-Tour Concert 2016

Every year, the Hong Kong Children’s Choir goes on summer tour to introduce Hong Kong culture and its young talents to the world. This year’s destination is Portugal, the Choir participates in the Lisbon International Youth Music Festival. Led by Music Director and Principal Conductor Kathy Fok, along with conductor and accompanist Dominic Lam, the Choir gives us a preview of its tour programme to our local audience. The ‘Friends of Radio 4 Society’ welcomes a new member! Although we welcome new members every month, this ‘new member’ is a little bit different: he is the new-born son of the Society’s administrator Anna Wong.

Anna and her husband broke the news to me last November as a good surprise. Although Anna looks quite petite, she gave birth, on 31 May, to a son that weighs 7 pounds and 10 ounces. Simply an unthinkable task, but Anna says the delivery is ‘quite a comfortable experience’!

So here we welcome Alvin, the delightful son of Anna and family. During Anna’s leave, the committee of Society has gladly taken over on daily administration. With grace we offer our blessings to the family.

In January, the New York Philharmonic appointed Jaap van Zweden as its new Music Director. While there has been much speculation on whether Jaap van Zweden’s leadership in the HK Phil will be affected, such worries can finally be put to an end. On 9 June, the Orchestra’s Chairman of the Board of Governors, Y. S. Liu, announced that van Zweden has extended his contract as Music Director with the HK Phil for three additional years – beginning in 2019 through the end of the 2021 - 2022 season.

‘I always think that every player of the HK Phil is a gem, and together each of these highly talented musicians makes a wonderful orchestra,’ said van Zweden. The Dutch conductor also expressed that it was his honour to continue his tenure as Music Director. ‘We have many more exciting projects yet to come.’

Van Zweden’s appointment in the New York Philharmonic will take effect starting in the 2018 – 2019 season, and he will be moonlighting ‘across the Pacific’, leading the two orchestras simultaneously. Michael MacLeod, Chief Executive of the HK Phil, however, sees it as a great opportunity for the Orchestra to share the same conductor with the New York Philharmonic. ‘Jaap van Zweden will be leading two great orchestras in two great cities,’ he said.

In the coming 2016 – 2017 season, van Zweden will appear in nine HK Phil music programmes, including Wagner’s Siegfried, the third installment of the Orchestra’s four-year Ring Cycle project; Mahler’s First, Third and Sixth symphonies; Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony; and Schubert’s Ninth Symphony, ‘The Great’. In October, van Zweden will also lead the Orchestra in a three-city concert tour to the mainland Chinese cities of Shanghai, Tianjin and Beijing.

今年1月,當梵志登被委任為紐約愛樂新音樂總監時,樂界一直揣測他會否離開港樂,

不過此憂慮終於劃上句號。港樂董事局主席劉元生於6月9日宣佈,梵志登再與港樂續約

三年,新合約任期將由2019延至2021 - 2022年樂季完結。

梵志登表示:「我經常說港樂每一位樂師都是耀眼的寶石,這些賦有才華的音樂家走在

一起,組成一支出色的管弦樂團。」梵志登亦指出與港樂合作是他的榮幸,更表示未來

「還有更多令人期待的計劃」。

梵志登成為紐約愛樂音樂總監的合約將於2018 - 2019年度樂季生效。屆時他將越洋同

時率領兩支樂團。港樂行政總裁麥高德則對於港樂能夠與紐約愛樂共享同一位音樂總

監,感到十分榮幸。他表示:「梵志登將於兩個大城市領導兩個水準超卓的樂團。」

在2016 - 2017樂季裡,梵志登將於港樂的九個音樂會中指揮演出,包括港樂歷時四年

的旗艦節目《指環》系列第三部曲《齊格菲》,馬勒的第一、第三和第六交響曲、蕭斯

達高維契的第八交響曲,以及舒伯特的第九交響曲「偉大」。今年10月,梵志登亦會率

領樂團到上海、天津和北京三個中國內地城市進行巡演。

The other day, I ran into Nancy Loo at the station. Her name should not be foreign to Radio 4 listeners. Aside from hosting two programmes over the weekends, Miss Loo is also an actress, writer, and most importantly, a highly-acclaimed pianist. With performance appearances all over the world, she has developed a wide range of repertoire, ranging from traditional to contemporary classical music, as well as Chinese music, sacred music and even film scores. It is this breadth of music that has made her one of my favourite pianists.

Chit-chatting to see what Miss Loo has planned for the summer, she told me she would be presenting a piano recital in August with works by composer Doming Lam (‘Master’ Lam). A forerunner and pusher of new music development in Hong Kong, ‘Master’ Lam has been called ‘The Father of New Music in Hong Kong’. In his compositions, avant-garde techniques merge perfectly with traditional Chinese flavours in creating an unprecedented style of contemporary classical music. The piano suite New Renditions of Ancient Melody and Insect World for Chinese orchestra are two among many of ‘Master’ Lam’s masterpieces.

Looking back, it was decades ago when Miss Loo first played the music of ‘Master’ Lam. Miss Loo told me that she had not seen the complete score of New Renditions of Ancient Melody, of which she was to give the premiere performance, until the dress rehearsal; and that while they were rehearsing, ‘Master’ Lam was still making revisions to the music! Of course, it all went well in the end. Ever since then, Miss Loo has performed the piece solo, as well as in arrangements with various ensembles, including Chinese orchestra, earning the recognition of ‘spokeswoman’ for ‘Master’ Lam’s piano music.

樂壇「二」寶 — 林樂培、羅乃新

Double Treasures – Doming Lam and Nancy LooLivia Lin 凌崎偵

早陣子筆者在電台偶遇鋼琴家羅乃新 (Miss Loo )。相信第四台聽眾對她的

名字都不會感到陌生。作為鋼琴家,Miss Loo 不但曾於世界各地演出,所

演奏的作品種類更是非常廣泛 ― 由傳統到現代古典音樂、聖詩、中樂,甚

至電影配樂,你都會聽到Miss Loo 的演奏。

Miss Loo 說8月會演出林樂培鋼琴作品展演音樂會。有「香港新音樂之

父」之稱的林大師,作品以巧妙的中西混合曲風而聞名,他為中樂團創作的

《昆蟲世界》,以及鋼琴獨奏組曲《古曲新譯》便是其中的代表作。原來當

年為大師首演《古曲新譯》的正是Miss Loo!她還跟我分享了一則趣事。

在首演音樂會前,年紀輕輕的Miss Loo 從未與這位赫赫有名的作曲家合作

過。眼見演出日子漸近,Miss Loo 只收到零零碎碎的樂譜片段,令她大

為緊張,擔心至演出之時仍然未有完整的樂譜。首演最終能順利完成,而

Miss Loo 更成為彈奏林大師鋼琴作品的不二人選。

常言道,「家有一老,如有一寶」。香港的古典音樂界能有這兩位「老」前

輩,實在是我們一眾後輩的福氣。筆者在此向兩位音樂家一直以來為香港音

樂界所作的貢獻,說聲感謝!
