Weight loss surgery is the fastest grow-ing elective surgery in the world. Be-cause of long wait times and a chronic shortage of bariatric surgeons in Cana-da, the only option for most patients is private health care. Some choose to pay for surgery out-of-country, also called “medical tourism.”

Melanie Wildman, President and CEO of Weight Loss Forever, warns patients to learn about the risks of medical tour-ism and recognize whether the company they’re considering is actually safe and able to provide you with proper care be-fore and after surgery.

It should raise red flags if some-one is willing to take your money and book a procedure without extensive preoperative testing, education and a comprehensive follow-up program in place prior to leaving the country. Does the company you’re dealing with have medical professionals on staff to provide ongoing care or are they merely selling you a surgery?”

No other company in Canada provides the support groups and extensive pre-operative and post-operative care pa-tients need. The support a patient re-ceives from Weight Loss Forever begins long before surgery, with mandatory no-

JULIE’S STORYAfter an unhappy marriage, Julie Creel-man, then in her twenties, found herself severely overweight and divorced with three kids. Feeling like she didn’t de-serve anyone’s attention or affection, she devoted her time to her children. For many years, she struggled with her weight, losing a little and gaining back twice as much. Finally, Julie met some-one who liked her just the way she was and instead of eating because she was upset, she began eating because she was content.

In 2002, she and her family moved to Canada and she continued gaining weight. While she had no major health issues, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure or sleep apnea, she couldn’t climb a flight of stairs without losing her breath and avoided traveling because she could barely fit into the seats.

Last February, when Julie, her husband and friends went to the Dominican, she spent most of her vacation in tears, dreading her bathing suit and the beach. Because she’d become an expert at hid-ing her feelings, no one knew how much the battle affected her.

“I was 430 pounds and I was devastat-ed. I came home and said, “You’ve prob-ably got 10 years left of being healthy and mobile before your husband is going to bury you,” Julie says. “I’d given up and truly lost all hope. On the inside I was just devastated and falling apart. I want people to know it isn’t over. There is a choice they can make for life.”

Julie discovered her choice last summer when she read an article about Weight Loss Forever in Fine Lifestyles magazine. She thought it was too good to be true, that it would work for someone who had to lose 50 pounds, but not for someone who had to lose 250 pounds. When she talked with her husband, she realized how much the situation affected him.

“He said, ‘What price do I put on your health? Do you think I want to be alone in 10 years?’ It was the first time he vo-calized he was scared. And I thought, ‘Who was I kidding?’”

Within two months, Julie had contacted Weight Loss Forever, spoke with other patients about their journeys, researched Dr. Pompa, contacted the Mayo Clinic where she trained, and enlisted a friend in the States to investigate the clinic in

person. When the research came back positive, her concerns about getting surgery in another country vanished. At 46 years old, she had the procedure September 21, has lost 150 pounds in just 6 months and is working toward her goal, which she says isn’t a number but is where she feels healthy.

“The genuine concern at the hospital was amazing; even in the States when I was paying for care privately, I never had that kind of care,” she says, adding that she’ll go back to Dr. Pompa and Dr. Rodas in a year for plastic surgery for ex-cess skin.

“This works and it’s permanent. It’s changed every aspect of my life,” she says. “I like me for the first time in 25 years and can finally say I’m proud of myself and where I am today. I can’t change the past but I can certainly move forward and be positive about how great

my life is now.”

KIM’S STORYAlthough Kim Heddon had always been heavy, her real battle with weight began after she had children and the struggle led to health issues, such as an under-active thyroid. As the weight piled up, she became trapped in a vicious cycle of trying one fad diet after another, watch-ing her scale climb and her self-esteem drop.

About 10 years ago, it became clear that diets and exercise weren’t working. Kim accepted it, deciding she would never turn to another diet unless it was per-manent. At a trade fair last year, Kim noticed the Weight Loss Forever booth. Intrigued, but sceptical, she approached Weight Loss Forever and asked about the “new diet they were trying.” When Kim heard it wasn`t a diet, she took their card and did some research on the Sleeve. Wanting to be sure, she also asked her doctor to look into the proce-dure, the surgeon and the facility.

“When we came back with our research, he told me if he was considering weight loss surgery, this was the company he would choose. If he had to pick a doc-tor, Dr. Pompa was the one he would go with and if he had to choose a facility, he would pick that one, too,” says Kim.

While Kim was concerned about travel-ing for the procedure, she was confident knowing Dr. Pompa is certified to prac-tice both in the United States and Mexi-co, has done thousands of surgeries and the staff at Weight Loss Forever were so

“I could have had the surgery in Canada but it would have cost an exorbitant amount of money, I would have been on a long waiting list and I would have had to travel anyway,” she says. “I was very impressed with the pleasant, relaxed at-mosphere and you are being taken care of by doctors—not nurses, doctors.”

On July 6, 2010, at 217 pounds, Kim got sleeved and is now down to 145 pounds. In addition to the weight loss surgery, Kim underwent plastic surgery—circular tummy tuck, partial leg lift and breast augmentation with implants—this April. While visiting her doctor for her post-operative appointments, she says he marvels at her surgical lines and says it’s the most beautiful work he’s seen in his practice.

“When I chose to do plastic surgery, there wasn’t any doubt I would go back with Weight Loss Forever; I knew they would never choose a plastic surgeon who didn`t complement them and the services they offer. Dr. Rodas specializes in people who have lost a tremendous amount of weight and he’s wonderful,” says Kim, who lost 2.71 kilograms of skin after the procedure.

“It’s the icing on the cake; why go through all that weight loss and not get it done? As you age and your metabo-lism slows down, it looks hopeless to lose weight but I found something that worked and I’m so thankful. I believe in Weight Loss Forever and the surgery so much. I finally reflect on the outside how

I’ve always felt on the inside and don’t have that weight dragging behind me anymore.”

We all remember our very latest Saskatchewan winter. How could we forget? Frigid. Stormy. Lingering… While most of us were turning up our thermo-stats, Lonny Forrester was turning his off… in the month of February! Why? Because Lonny’s home is insulated with spray foam insulation.

If your home’s framing is the bones of your house, then your insulation is the heart of your home’s construction. It is what keeps your home warm and com-fortable in the winter and cool in the summer while simultaneously acting as a barrier for environmental factors like wind and moisture. Without quality insulation, your home is simply a frame around your family. With winters like ours, it is also a very real necessity.

Lonny Forrester, owner of EnviroFoam, investigated their spray foam insulation while his sister was building a new fam-ily home. “My family and I visited their construction site just after the framing and insulating had been completed,” said Lonny. “Their 3,800 square-foot home was being heated for drywall con-tractors with only two space heaters. At minus-30 degrees outside, we all had to remove our jackets because it was so warm. That’s when I knew that spray foam insulation was the way to go when we built our own new home in Rouleau. Food, Coffee and Style

She was young and sophisticated. Her friends had already found a place to sit; they had pushed together several comfortable black leather chairs around a table, and were visiting. She turned to the barista and ordered a Caramel Macchiato.

Across the room a lawyer was meeting with a client. They were sitting on a sofa near the fireplace, away from the other people in the room. Documents were spread out on the table for discussion.

In the back corner a man in a suit sat, computer on his lap, holding a Skype call on the free Wi-Fi network.

The location was, of course, Subway.

WAIT. What?

When Scott Love and Bob Priebe opened Canada’s very first Subway Cafe on January 26, they expected to surprise people. It’s not that the Subway Cafe doesn’t have all the things that you would expect from any other Subway Restaurant—fresh and

healthy sandwiches, salads, and soups—no, the Subway Cafe is about all the things that no other Subway has.

Things like an upscale décor with a full coffee bar with an actual barista, serving Seattle’s Best coffee (one of the world’s leading coffee chains, owned by the world famous Starbucks Coffee). Or the spacious and luxurious eating area with black leather chairs, fireplace, and fireside lounge. Or the spacious outdoor patio with sun umbrellas and comfortable chairs.

“It is also important to us to run the business ourselves,” adds Priebe. “We work in this restaurant everyday, so everythi ng is maintained to the standards that we expect. We know that the levels of customer service are the best because we interact with our customers and staff continually.”

Jim and Angie Mamais opened their first Mr. Sub franchise in Regina in 1989. Today, they own and operate two Mr. Sub locations in Regina, and are known not only for the delicious food that they make, but also for their friendly smiles and excellent customer service.

Running two businesses is always a challenge, especially when you have two kids that play hockey, but the Mamais family takes it in stride.

“It is all worth it when we see our customers coming back day after day. We really get to know the people who come into the stores on a regular basis–they’re like family,” says Angie.

Treating people like family means great customer service, but it also means a great product. “Mr. Sub is a Canadian franchise, owned and operated in Regina. To me, supporting Canadian and local businesses means a lot,” adds Jim. “In addition, we use only the highest quality product in our sandwiches. We bake the bread right here in our store, and our products, along with everything else, are always fresh.”

Next time you’re hungry, stop by one of the Mamais family restaurants. They are both open for breakfast, and there is even a drive-through at the McDonald Street location for your convenience. They also cater events from 1 to 1,000 people for business meetings, school events, weddings, or whatever the occasion may be.
