RELIEVING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Week 9 23rd June 2014 Welcome to Week 9. What a term it’s been! If the kids are feeling a little exhausted the following could be why. In the last 8 weeks we have had students and staff involved in: the school Anzac Ceremony, K-1 Cross Country, Mother’s Day stall, School Athletics Carnival, NAPLAN, Soccer at Hay, District Cross Country at Jerilderie, boys in Sydney at Riverina Football, girls at Riverina Netball, Stage 2 Excursion to Phillip Island, Reconciliation Week, the Football and Netball GALA Day in Deniliquin, UNSW Science test, SRC Royal Day, District Athletics at Berrigan, Stage 3 Excursion to Canberra, Zone Cross Country in Deniliquin, Debating at Barham, boys Soccer at Deniliquin, Paul Kelly Cup at Albury, the Local Land Heroes book writing project. We have welcomed Work Experience students and a CSU Prac student. The Staff have been involved in L3 Training sessions via Video Conference, Focus on Reading training sessions via Video Conference and LMBR training at school and at Narrandera. Somewhere in all of this we have fitted in 8 weeks of teaching and learning.
This week is just as busy with students involved in the Lions Club Public Speaking competition today, Reports going home tomorrow (Tuesday), the 4/3 Aussie Day on Wednesday, the SRC dress-up day on Friday and we say goodbye to Bronny Cole.
Semester 1 Reports Student reports go home tomorrow – Tuesday. Students’ achievement and progress in class is assessed by their teacher(s). Teachers use a variety of ways to assess students and make judgements of their students' progress throughout the year, as determined by the expectations described in each Key Learning Area (KLA) syllabus.
Twice a year teachers report to parents on students’ achievement. Assessment is reported on a 5 point achievement scale using A-E or the word descriptors; Outstanding, High, Sound, Limited and Basic. A grading of ‘C’ or ‘Sound’ means that your child is ‘on track’ in relation to what they are expected to learn at this point in their Stage. Students are grouped in ‘Stage’ levels in NSW primary schools, these are Early Stage 1 (Kinder), Stage 1 (Year 1 & 2), Stage 2 (Year 3 & 4) and Stage 3 (Year 5 & 6).
Please read teacher comments carefully and if you would like to make an appointment to see your child’s teacher in regard to any aspect of their report, please contact the school. Positive Behaviour in the playground As part of our whole school Positive Behaviour for Learning approach, this term has seen a new reward system implemented in the playground. Teachers have been handing out ‘tickets’ to students who they have seen endeavouring to follow our whole school behaviour expectations of “Be Respectful”, “Be Responsible”, “Be a Learner”. This term 39 students have been rewarded with a canteen voucher. Throughout the whole term there has only been 1 student who has received an award twice. It has been wonderful to see so many students demonstrating positive behaviour choices in the playground. This reward system will continue next term.
Uniform With the onset of the colder weather, we had noticed an increasing number of students wearing clothes other than uniform. Following a few reminders last week, it was terrific to look out at morning assemblies and see an increase in the number of students wearing correct uniform. Our uniform colours are brown and gold. Winter uniform does not include leggings or state sporting jumpers. We do have 2 businesses selling FPS uniforms in town. Please be sure to write your child’s name on uniform items so that we can ensure they are returned if they are lost. Paul Kelly Cup Last Friday our girls and boys Paul Kelly Cup teams headed to Albury to compete in the first round of competition. Both teams put in great efforts and made it into the Semi-finals. Unfortunately they were beaten which means they now bow out of the competition. Congratulations to all of our girls and boys on their efforts. They did our school proud. Regional Athletics The Regional Athletics Carnival was scheduled for today. However, it was postponed due to a forecast of poor weather. Please note that it has now been rescheduled again. The new date is Monday 4th August. Notes regarding the Regional Athletics Carnival have been sent home with those students who will be involved. Farewell to Mrs Cole Sadly this week is Mrs Bronwyn Cole’s last week at Finley Public School. Bron is transferring to Southern Cross School. She is looking forward to being close to her family but sad to be leaving Finley and the friends she has here. Bron has taught many students at FPS over the last 11 years. Her professionalism and her dedicated and caring way with all students has been outstanding. We really will miss Bron!
Next term Miss Melanie Dodd will be working with 4/3C. Melanie has been teaching 2L this term and has already developed a rapport with many of the students in 4/3C.
Bron’s last day is Friday. We wish Bron, Brendan and their boys all the very best as they move on to the next chapter in their life. Ms Williams returns from leave next term Next term we welcome Ms Williams back from Maternity Leave. Melinda is very keen to return to school and is looking forward to working with all of the students, staff and parents. I am very much looking forward to returning to teaching my class. P&C A reminder that the P&C meeting is on tonight, in the staffroom. Please note the earlier time of 7pm due to Winter. All welcome. I hope everyone has a terrific week and that all of our students have a great holiday. School resumes for students on Tuesday 15th July. Amanda Lyons (Relieving Principal)
