Tha Ms NicAmhlaigh, Bun-sgoil, air a bhith ag obair aig Campa Òigridh ann am Moldòbha o chionn deich

bliadhna. Chumar Là gun Èideadh le tabhartasan is chaidh £880 a thogail airson taic a chur ris an

obair aice. Tha sinn a-rithist air ar togail le cho fialaidh is a tha sgoilearan is luchd-obrach ri

carthannasan.

Ms Macaulay, Primary has been attending and supporting Youth Camps in Moldova for the last ten

years. A non-uniform day was held recently and £880 was raised to support her work. We are once

again stunned by the school’s generosity towards others.

Ball-lìn

Soirbheachas ann an Spòrs

Chluich sgioba nigheanan AS1 an-aghaidh Holyrood anns a’ chuairt dheireannach de dh’fharpais

Sgoiltean Ghlaschu agus bha iad soirbheachail. Nach iad a rinn math.

The SGG S1 now S2 Netball Team played Holyrood in the Glasgow Schools' League Playoff Final. This

is the first time that SGG has had a team finish in the top two of the league and the girls have done

very well to get here.

Annabel MacDonald (captain) , Alison Blain, Abigail Campbell, Iona Cochrane, Anna Horsburgh, Seona

MacLeod, Eilidh Michie, Sìleas NicGriogair, Evie Thomson and Mirren Ward.

Chan eil math dhuinn dhiochuimhneachadh mu na treasamh is na ceathramh bliadhna a bha anns a’

cheathramh àite anns an lìg acasan – iadsan cuideachd rim moladh.

In addition, our S3/4s also did very well to finish 4th in the S3/4 Division 1 League.

Mòd Ionadail Ghlaschu

Chaidh am Mòd a chumail Dihaoine 10 agus Disathairne 11 Ògmhios 2016 ann an Sgoil Ghàidhlig. Bha an

t-àite air bhoil le tòrr fharpaisean is fharpaisich. Thathar fada an comain na bha ga chur air dòigh, na

bha a’ cuideachadh air an latha is na bha ag ullachadh is a’ deasachadh na farpaisich.

The Glasgow Local Mod was held on Friday evening and Saturday. Many thanks are due to the

organisers, those who helped in any way on the day and anyone who helped prepare the competitors.

See below a letter from Angela Jenkins, Secretary of the Glasgow Branch of An Comann.

Can I please pass on the Glasgow Mod Committee's sincere gratitude to the following pupils for their

support and hard work at this year's Glasgow Mod. Not only did many give up their free time on the

Friday evening but they arrived early Saturday (8.15am) and just mucked in doing whatever was asked

of them. A real credit to the school as well as their parents.

Samuel Campbell S6 singlehandedly put every competition and it's prizewinners on the Mod Facebook

and Twitter accounts.

Anna Horsburgh and Sìleas NicGriogair were runners as well as keeping the noise level down outside

the library. (They were both there on the Friday and Saturday)

Duncan Mackenzie very ably took control of the cafe (Saturday)

Anna Jean Mackenzie and Ella Smith, kept the corridor outside room 2 and 3 quiet.

Anna NicGriogair (Friday and Saturday),Anna Smith, Seona and Catriona Macleod, Leila Urquhart and

Abigail Campbell (Saturday) were runners and also helped out with other various tasks.

Charlotte Cavanagh chaired the fiddle competition on the Friday night and did a wonderful job. She

also helped out in the cafe and tuck shop on the Saturday.

Abigail Cavanagh helped out in a variety of different tasks (tickets, cafe, tuck, runner) on the Friday

and Saturday night.

Mairi Macdonald took control of the tuck shop on the Saturday as well as selling the SGG CDs on the

Friday evening.

Carla Galanti chaired competitions on Friday night as well as a taking on a variety of different tasks

on the Saturday.

Rebekah Boyle chaired competitions on the Saturday. A huge thank you to Ms McEachen who

organised the rooms set up with pupils from the music department. That in itself is a huge and labour

intensive task for our committee and for that in itself I am deeply grateful. Furthermore many of

these pupils (Saturday volunteers) put the classrooms back to 'normal' when our Mod was complete.

(former pupils) Eilidh Jenkins and Moilidh NicGriogair volunteered their time also chairing and

adjudicating.

Thank you to all the teachers who supported pupils with their Mod pieces, helped out on the evening

of the Friday and Saturday (Mrs Sproat, Ms Buchanan, Ms MacKay and Mrs Morrison) and Office

staff for their patience with all the phone calls. ( I really hope I haven't missed anyone out)

Fios on Àrd-sgoil – 13 is 20 Ògmhios 2016

A special mention to Mrs Sproat and Ms Buchanan for all their help leading up to and on the days of

the Mod.

We are indebted to all our volunteers and I know the school has a House points system - if recognition

could be given as a small token of our gratitude our committee would be so very grateful.

Le gach dùrachd

Drama @ Ceòl ’s Craic

‘Briseadh Na Cloiche’

(The Breaking of the Stone)

Monday 13 June, 7pm

Webster’s Theatre, 416 Great Western Rd, Glasgow

Ceòl ’s Craic presents ‘Briseadh Na Cloiche’, an original Gaelic drama adapted

for the stage by actor / writer / director Iain Macrae.

This adaption of Gaelic author John Murray’s short story combines drama, mime

and live percussion to trace the protagonist’s journey from joyful courtship

through to the story’s harrowing conclusion.

The short drama will be followed by a panel discussion / Q & A session

featuring the cast and, we’re delighted to announce, the author of this highly

influential piece of Gaelic literature. (With simultaneous translation)

Join us afterwards for some live music and a complimentary drink.

This event marks a double first for Ceòl ’s Craic ; our first foray into film

making, as the drama is in the process of being turned into a short film, and our

first involvement in Glasgow’s West End Festival. www.westendfestival.co.uk

Day 1 - Oban to Barra - 0 miles

We will meet in Oban and take the ferry to Barra.

It might be easier for some to meet us in Barra

depending on where they are travelling from. Having

our tea on the boat, we will get to know each other

and continue our preparation in Barra. Final checks

of bikes and equipment plus a discussion of our

route. A great adventure awaits us! Accommodation

will be a hostel or camping.

Latha 2 - Barraigh - Tobha Mòr - 28

mìltean

A' chiad latha air an rothair agus thèid

sinn dhan Àrd Mhòr timcheall taobh siar

Bharraigh. Tha seallaidhean àlainn an

seo sa bhad ach tha na rathaidean gu

Day 2 - Barra to Howmore - 28 miles

Our first day in the saddle and we start by cycling

on the west side of Barra past the Atlantic Ocean

on easy roads. Our first rest comes fairly quickly as

we take the ferry to Eriskay. We then follow the

roads, across the causeway to South Uist and

Fios on Àrd-sgoil – 13 is 20 Ògmhios 2016

math furasta. Beagan fois air an aiseag

a dh'Èireisgeigh agus air a' chabhsair gu

Uibhist a Deas. Leanaidh sinn na

rathaidean ann an Uibhist a Deas le

cothrom stad aig àitean inntinneach,

cafaidhean agus bùthan. Bidh sinn a'

fuireach aig Tobha Mòr no eile.

onwards stopping now and again at interesting spots,

shops and cafes. We will stay at Howmore or

nearby.

Latha 3 - Tobha Mòr - Beàrnaraigh -

32 mìltean

Sìos gu tuath mar a chanas iad. Tro

Uibhist a Deas, Beinn a' Bhaoghla agus

Uibhist a Tuath air cabhsairean agus

rathaidean sàmhach. Tha a’ bhan againn

cuideachd cuimhnich ma bhios duine sam

bith sgìth no feumach air taic. Stadaidh

sinn aig àitean sònraichte air ar slighe le

cothroman gu leòr fois a ghabhail. 'S e

an treas latha às dùbhlanaiche mar sin

nì sinn air ar socair. Àite-fuirich ann am

Beàrnaraigh.

Day 3 - Howmore to Berneray - 32 miles

Flat roads and a wind hopefully behind us through

South Uist, Benbecula and on to North Uist.

Remember that we are also accompanied by our van

for all of the journey in case anyone needs just a

wee bit extra support. We will stop and rest fairly

often, keeping the team together and to see the

sights of the islands. We are now developing a

rhythm to our cycling. Accommodation in Berneray.

Latha 4 - Beàrnaraigh - Sgaladail -

31 mìltean

Tha an latha a' tòiseachadh le aiseag

tro Chaolas na Hearadh. Slighe àraid

eadar creagan agus sgeirean. An uair sin

tha An t-Ob far a bheil bùthan agus

goireasan. Thèid sinn air taobh an iar na

Hearadh far am faic sinn tràighean

mòra (cothrom air reòiteag) agus

seallaidhean cha math 's a gheibhear

Day 4 -Berneray to Scalladale- 31 miles

We start the day with the ferry through the

Sounds of Harris over to Leverburgh. It's an

interesting route through skerries and islands. We

make land at Leverburgh where we can stock up on

any supplies we need. Our route takes us round the

west side of Harris where there are some huge and

beautiful beaches (ice cream opportunity) and views

as good as you will get anywhere. We can eat our

lunch on the beach and afterwards continue to

Fios on Àrd-sgoil – 13 is 20 Ògmhios 2016

àite sam bith. Gabhaidh sinn ar lòn faisg

no air tràigh agus an uair sin dhan

Tairbeart, prìomh bhaile na Hearadh.

Tha am bruach as doirbhe as dèidh seo -

An Cliseam. Chan eil e ro dhona ged tha

agus le rothairean aotrom, gun bhaganan

orra, nì sinn a' chùis ann an 30

mionaidean. As dèidh seo - sìos fad an

rathaid gu Sgaladail agus frasan blàtha!

Tarbert, the main place in Harris. A few miles after

Tarbert we are faced with the biggest challenge of

the whole route - The Clisham. It genuinely isn't too

bad though and with our bikes carrying very little

(it's in the van) we should get to the top in about 30

minutes.. After this it's downhill the whole way to

Scalladale and showers.

Latha 5 - Sgaladail - Na

Geàrrannan - 35 mìltean

Bidh sinn a' leantainn air ar slighe le

fios nach eil bruaichean mòra romhainn -

deagh naidheachd! An sgioba ag obair

còmhla, taic bhon bhus agus luchd-

stiùiridh agus fit 's fallain, thèid sinn gu

Na Geàrrannan tro mhòinteach

Leòdhais. Leis na rathaidean math, nì

sinn deagh adhartas. Bidh cothrom

againn stad aig Na Tursachan agus Dùn

Chàrlabhaigh.

Day 5 - Scalladale - Na Geàrrannan - 35 miles

Safe in the knowledge that there are no major hills

in front of us, we continue into Lewis. The team will

be working well by now and we are on bigger roads

meaning we don't have to deal with passing places.

These roads will allow us to make good progress. Of

course, we will have a chance to stop at Callanish to

see the standing stones and at Carloway for the

broch. We will stay at Geàrrannan or nearby.

Latha 6 - Na Geàrrannan - Rubha

Robhanais - 28 mìltean

An latha mu dheireadh air rothair agus

bidh spionnadh againn air a' cheann-

uidhe - Rubha Robhanais aig ceann tuath

Eilean Leòdhais. Cumaidh sinn air na

prìomh rathaidean agus deagh theans

gum bi a' ghaoth air ar cùlaibh fad an

turais. 'S cinnteach gu bi dannsa no dhà

Day 6 - Na Geàrrannan to the Butt of Lewis -

28 miles

Our last day in the saddle and with the end in sight

we will cycle the good roads of the west side of

Lewis. As we are heading north east, there is a fair

chance that we will have a following wind making the

journey easier and more enjoyable. Now doubt there

will be plenty of celebrations when we reach the end

of our journey - the lighthouse at the Butt of Lewis.

Fios on Àrd-sgoil – 13 is 20 Ògmhios 2016

ann aig deireadh an turais - An Taigh

Solais os cionn na mara.

Bidh sinn a' fuireach ann an

Steòrnabhagh.

We will have come far, cycled in amazing places and

made many new friends. It will have been well worth

it.

Later, we drive to Stornoway for food and

relaxation and a well-earned rest!

Latha 7 - Steòrnabhagh - Inbhir

Nis/An t-Òban

An aiseag a dh'Ulapul agus draibheadh a

dh'Inbhir Nis. Ma bhios feum, faodaidh

sinn beachdachadh air taic gus faighinn

air ais dhan Òban no Glaschu/Dùn

Èideann.

Day 7 - Stornoway to Inverness/Oban and home

We take the ferry to Ullapool and drive onwards to

Inverness. If there is a need, we can consider

support with onward travel for those going to

Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Aims

To cycle from Barra to the Butt of Lewis as a team

and visit various places on the way as well as making

new friends. This will be a personal and team

Fios on Àrd-sgoil – 13 is 20 Ògmhios 2016

pearsanta agus buidhne agus tro

mheadhan na Gàidhlig.

challenge and will be Gaelic medium throughout.

An Turas

Chan e reis a tha seo. Tha sinn ag amas

air turas tro na h-Eileanan Siar le

caraidean ùra, tron Ghàidhlig, agus eòlas

a chur air na diofar àitean air an t-

slighe.

‘S e dùbhlan a bhios anns an

rothaireachd. Bidh meanbh-bhus againn

airson bagannan agus daoine mar

iomchaidh.

Bidh stiùiriche le teisteanas leis a’

bhuidheann fad an turais agus a’ gabhail

cho-dhùnaidhean air slighe, astar agus

nithean eile.

The Journey

This is not a race. The aim of the trip is to travel

through the Western Isles with new friends, in a

Gaelic medium environment and learn about and

enjoy the various places on the way.

The cycling will offer a challenge to all participants.

We will have a minibus with us which can carry

luggage and support the group as required.

A qualified cycle leader will accompany the group at

all times and take decisions on routes, distances,

timings and other factors which affect the

participants

Taic

Tha bus againn a bhios a’ giùlan

bhagannan mar iomchaidh agus iadsan

feumach air fois. Cha bhi sinn a’

dèanamh seo ach ma tha feum air. Tha

dùil againn an turas a dhèanamh air

baidhc.

Cha bhi am bus leis a’ bhuidheann fad na

h-ùine ach bidh e a’ stad ann an àitean

sònraichte agus ri fhaighinn air fòn ma

bhios feum.

Bidh dithis stiùiriche os cionn an turais;

aonan sa bhus agus neach eile leis a’

bhuidheann.

Support

We will have a support vehicle with us which can

transport luggage as required and those in need of a

rest. We don’t intend to use our vehicle to

transport people unless this is necessary. We intend

to complete the journey on cycle.

The support vehicle will not accompany us on the

road but will stop and meet us a certain points and

can be summoned by phone if necessary.

Two members of staff will lead the trip; one in the

support vehicle and the other leading the group.

Fios on Àrd-sgoil – 13 is 20 Ògmhios 2016

Àite-fuirich

Tha sinn an dùil fuireach ann an

ostailean ionadail agus a' campadh.

‘S dòcha gum bi aig cuid ri champachadh

ri taobh na h-ostail le cothrom air na

goireasan. Bidh teantaichean againn.

Accommodation

We intend to use local hostels for accommodation

and cooking. Other members of the public will most

likely be at the hostels although we will endeavour

to book private rooms for our group.

Depending on each location, if necessary, some

members may be required camp adjacent to the

hostel and have access to its facilities. Tents will

be provided.

Biadh

Tha am prìs a’ toirt a-steach

biadh. Bidh sinn a’ tabhann bracaist, lòn

agus dìnnear gach latha le suipear air an

fheasgar. Feumaidh com-pàirtichean

biadh sam bith a bharrachd a

cheannach.

Food

Food is included in the price. We will provide

breakfast, lunch and dinner each day as well as a

supper in the evening. Any additional food required

must be provided by participants.

Slighe rothair

San fharsaingeachd, tha an t-slighe air

rathaidean sàmhach. Bidh neart na

gaoithe agus uisge sam bith na nithean

as motha a bheireas buaidh air a’

bhuidheann. Bidh sinn a’ dol, an dòchas,

leis a’ ghaoth.

Tha pàirtean ann far a bheil èiridh ann,

gu sònraichte anns Na Hearadh. Tha

leathad deas air an Tairbeart thairis air

bealach agus tha an Cliseam cas airson

aon mhìle. Ma tha sinn a’ fuireach

aig Rèineagadail, tha bealach eile ann

Cycle terrain

In general, the route offers easy cycling on quiet

roads. The strength and direction of the wind and

precipitation will be the main factors affecting the

group. In general, our direction of travel should

allow us to use the wind to our advantage.

There are a few significant hills on route,

particularly in Harris. There is an ascent south of

Tarbert to cross to the east of the island and the

Cliseam ascent, north of Tarbert is steep and

sustained for a mile. If we stay at Rhenigidale,

there is also a significant ascent over the bealach to

get to the hostel.

Fios on Àrd-sgoil – 13 is 20 Ògmhios 2016

gus faighinn dhan ostail.

Bidh taic ann bhon bhus againn

dhaibhsan nach eil airson na leathadan

seo a dhèanamh air rothair.

San fharsaingeachd, ‘s iad rathaidean

caola ann am Barraigh ‘s Uibhist. Tuath

air an Tairbeart, tha na rathaidean dà-

fhillte agus beagan nas trainge.

Tha sàbhailteachd nar prìomhachas agus

nì sinn cinnteach gum bith luchd-rothair

a’ siubhal ann an dòigh freagarrach fad

an turais.

Our support vehicle can assist where participants do

not want to attempt these ascents.

In general the roads are off the single track,

passing place variety in Barra and Uist. North of

Tarbert and into Lewis the roads are two way and

slightly busier.

Safety is our top consideration and we will ensure

that participants cycle in an appropriate and

responsible fashion at all times.

Neart & Ullachadh

Chan fheum na com-pàirtichean a bhith

nan lùth-chleasaichean airson an

dùbhlain seo. Bu chòir dhaibh a bhith

eòlach air rothaireachd agus

làimhseachadh baidhc gus nach bi latha

fada san dìollaid ro dhoirbh.

Tha sinn den bheachd gum bi an t-slighe

comasach dhaibh le ullachadh

ceart. Chan eil seo idir a’ ciallachadh

prògram trèanaidh agus bu chòir dhaibh

slighean fada a dhèanamh ro làimh.

Tha e gu math nàdarra a bhith sgìth air

turas mar seo no uallach mun latha

romhpa. Bheir sinn taic do gach neach.

Tha bus againn airson taic ma tha e a

dhìth.

Fitness & Preparation

Participants do not need to be elite cyclists to take

this challenge on. They should be familiar with

cycling and bike handling however so that a long day

in the saddle is not too much of a shock.

Our view is that young people will be able to cycle

the entire route, with the right physical and mental

preparation. That doesn’t mean a dedicated training

regime prior to the trip but it does mean some

longer cycles to build up awareness of tiredness and

with their bike.

It’s perfectly normal to feel tired on a trip like this

or nervous about the next day. We will support

young people throughout the trip.

Our support vehicle can carry luggage if required.

Fios on Àrd-sgoil – 13 is 20 Ògmhios 2016

Uidheamachd

Tha rothair, ann an deagh staid, a dhìth

airson an turais seo. ‘S e rothair-turais

as freagarraiche ach bidh rothair-

rathaid sam bith freagarrach.

Tha rothair-slèibhe cuideachd

freagarrach fhad ‘s a tha taidhrean

rathaid agus deagh shuidheachadh air

an dìollaid. Mar nas èifeachdaiche am

baidhc, ‘s ann nas fhasa a bhios an

turas. Chan eil allsachadh a dhìth no

freagarrach air an turas seo. Bhiodh

allsachadh aig a’ chuibhle chùil na

bhacadh.

Bidh sinn ag ullachadh ar rothairean air

a’ chiad fheasgar ann am Barraigh.

Tha taidhrean rathaid riatanach agus

chan eil taidhrean slèibhe ceadaichte.

Bidh seacaid agus briogais dìon uisge

agus gaoithe a dhìth mar a bhios

miotagan, clogaid, dòigh giùlain bàthair,

uidheamachd a bharrachd agus

speuclairean grèine.

Tha aodach fuadain (co-thàthte!)

freagarrach agus briogais goirid a’

fàgail an turais nas cofhurtaile!

Equipment

A bike in good condition and familiar to the cyclist is

a must for this trip. The ideal bike is one designed

for road touring although any dedicated road bike

will be sufficient.

Mountain bikes with road tyres and a comfortable

cycling position are also appropriate. The more

efficient the bike, the easier the journey will

be. Therefore suspension is not an advantage or

requirement on this trip. In fact, any rear

suspension in particular would be a significant

disadvantage and slow progress.

The first evening in Barra will see us make final bike

preparations.

Road cycling tyres are mandatory and off road

mountain bike tyres not permitted.

Other equipment should include a wind proof and

waterproof jacket and trousers, cycling gloves,

helmet, some method of carrying luggage, cycle

spares and sunglasses.

Lightweight, synthetic clothing is ideal and cycling

shorts always make the journey more comfortable in

the nether regions!
