Did you know most of our neighbors who use the food bank are the working poor? Many, many people in our community struggle with “food insecurity” and don’t know from day-to-day where they will get the food they need for themselves or for those they care for—like children and disabled family members. Our Food Bank does this amazing work daily!
When asked if they would rather receive food or money, they respond, “BOTH!” They can purchase in bulk, they can get some great deals! And, much of the fresh produce is from local gardens!

Change! Why do we dread it, I wonder. I looked it up in my 1984 Webster’s Dictionary. The first two transitive verb meanings for “Change” are “to make different: Alter” and “to give a totally different form or appearance to: Transform”. The first two noun meanings are “the act, process, or result of changing” and “substitution of one thing for another”.
Those definitions don’t seem so scary. We alter things all the time. Quilt makers turn perfectly good pieces of cloth into lovely and functional bed coverings. We transform things a lot also. Don’t you have ice cube trays or an icemaker in your freezer? What about this? Do you change your clothes after you get off work? I sure do. I can hardly wait!
Yet, we resist change all the time. We buy the same cereal or dish soap or detergent we have always gotten. We travel the same route to work or church. We go to the same grocery store or movie theater or bookstore. We watch the same programs on TV until they are canceled, but there are usually re-runs, so no problem.
We seem to grow up and lose the sense of adventure we had as children. Or, in the case of the church, we start to doubt that God is with us all the time, and is looking out for us. We notice the people who are missing, and fail to see the old and new people that are here with us. Time marches on and the face of the church is being altered. Our neighborhood is transforming. The needs of our neighborhood are in the process of changing. We need to be brave and embrace the changes that are happening now, as we transform into the First Christian Church that will be. Rest assured that God will not change and will be with us for all time. It is we who are being transformed and God will guide us along the way.

BUSHELL SCHOLARSHIP
Heesook Yoo has been a
three year recipient of a
Bushell Scholarship.
Heesook served as our
Regional Moderator until
this past May. She grad-
uated from Seattle Uni-
versity School of Theology and Ministry in
June and was ordained at the Lake Washing-
ton Christian Church in Kirkland, Washington
on July 14. It has been an honor to be a part of
her spiritual journey and we will continue to
pray for her as she continues her journey in
ministry.
Karen Ferguson is studying at Claremont
School of Theology in Claremont, California.
Karen will continue to receive a Bushell
scholarship until she graduates.
The Bushell Scholarship is now being
administered by the Disciples Seminary
Foundation in Claremont, California. The
reason for moving the administration of the
scholarship is to ensure long term manage-
ment of the scholarship process. The legacy
of George and Kathryn Bushell is good
hands.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS—COMING IN AUGUST!
Sunday, August 12TH We’re planning our annual church picnic!! I know—how fun is
that!?! The church will be supplying the main course. We are asking folks to bring their
favorite side dish, salad, or dessert! We’ll also have lemonade and iced tea. If you’d like
other beverages, please bring them!
There will be games, music, fun and a few surprises! Mary briefly considered a water
balloon fight with the balloons and water balloon filler we have in the back room—
but our wonderful board reeled her back down to earth (at least a little!).
So, it’s sure to be a really wonderful day filled with fun, laughter, and a reasonably-well
behaved group! How much more fun could we have? Feel free to invite folks you know—
or would like to know better!

Retreat Redux?
We had an amazing time at our retreat in June! Why are we bringing it up now? Because, if you weren’t able to join us—or you were only able to be there for one day and not both—or you went to both days and are just wish-ing for MORE—we have great news!
August 12th and 19th we’ll be going over some of the highlights we gleaned from our retreat and our amazing facilitator, Rev. Kara Markell! We’ll have a chance to reflect on where our church has been and some of the great things we’ve done as we brainstorm and work together to plan for what will come next! We need your voice!

Organizers from the National Korean American Service and Education Consortium (NAKASEC) and affiliates have been working to counter much of the negative stereotypes about immigrants and refugees that have been communicated of late. The bike riders will be riding from Seattle, Washington to San Diego, California to bring attention to the issues of immigration and refugees. Along the way, the riders will be welcomed in communities and share some of their stories.
That’s where we come in! On Thursday, August 2nd, they will be on the second day of their journey, from Tacoma to Olympia. We are inviting people from all over our community — from faith communities to groups who are passionate about social justice—especially as it relates to immigration and refugees.
We are greeting the riders in Sylvester Park Thursday afternoon. They are due to arrive by 5pm. So, bring your welcome signs supporting immigration and refugees, and your welcome smiles! Then, we’re inviting all the riders, their support vehicle folks, and the entire community to the church for a potluck supper!

GUEST SPEAKER IN AUGUST
The first Sunday in August, we will welcome our Regional Minister, Rev. Sandy Messick! This will be the first time we’ve had a visit from Sandy since the Regional Assembly, when we voted to merge with the Montana Region. That means we will get a chance to “Name that Region”! As you know, the Northwest Region no longer aptly describes us. We will have a chance to visit with Sandy and maybe suggest a new name for our region. Bring your creative thoughts and ideas and join us for a great day with our regional minister!
THE DISCIPLES WOMEN’S MINISTRIES
It is with great joy and thanks that Pastor Amy has agreed to lead a Bible study, starting on September 13TH, the second Wednesday of the month at 1-2pm in Sacred Space. The study will continue once a month September through June, on the 2ND Wednesday. Everyone wishing to attend may do so. No need to ‘sign -up’, no business to conduct, no lunch to eat—just food for the soul. All
women and men are welcome. We hope and pray that this change will be a great benefit for us all.
There will be an elders’ meeting Sunday, August 5th after service. Grab some coffee and a snack, and join us in the library.
This month’s board meeting will be Wednesday, August 8TH at 6pm in the church library.
Beginning in August 2018, there will be a congrega-tion of the Montana Region, congregation of the Northwest Region, or a related issue held up in pray-er each week for seventeen months. Please join us in praying for: Pastor Jeff Johnson, United Christian in Grays Harbor serves the homeless in their area. Please pray for their mission to others and for an increase in church attendance so they may continue to serve.
