Dear Parents,

FIRST COMMUNION – 19th AUGUST

"The Eucharist is such a great gift. That's why going to Mass is so important. Going to Mass not just to pray, but to receive Communion, the Bread and Body of Christ. It saves us, forgives us and it makes us one with the Father”

Pope Francis What a beautiful celebration of First Communion for our children last Sunday. The terrible wintery morning didn’t hamper the wonderful spirit that permeated the morning.

I would like to thank Ms Monteleone again in her capacity as Religious Education Leader, Ms Meagan Baldwin and Ms Amanda Pacella, the Year 4 teachers, for their hard work and support of the programme and for their wonderful preparation of the children. My thanks to the musicians and the angelic voices of members of our school choir for also supporting this year’s communicants. My thanks also to Fr Joe for making the day such a memorable one.

Finally, on behalf of our School community I’d like to extend our congratulations to all the children who received the Holy Eucharist for the first time. They all contributed so beautifully and reverently and we can certainly be proud of them. We hope and pray that these children have wonderful memories of this occasion and that it will be a profound spiritual experience for them, an experience that will significantly move them forward in their faith journey. May they always feel the love and presence of the Lord throughout their lives. I encourage our community to keep these children in your prayers.

BOOK WEEK DAY Arrgggggh….. Ahoy there me hearties and landlubbers. It made me timbers shiver when I saw the wonderful costumes and the joy of the children as they participated in yesterday’s book parade and the ‘Pirates vs Mermaids’ production.

Pirate Luisa, Pirate Sue Pirate Maria Pirate Butters I’d like to thank our Literacy Leader, Ms Maria Lontos, for her wonderful work in preparation for the Parade and organising all the wonderful book awards and of course to the judges who had the unenviable task of choosing two award winners from each class. My thanks also to the wonderful MC’s that hosted the morning. As mentioned, we have another two names that will become synonymous with the GREAT duos of all time – Lennon & McCartney, Simon & Garfunkle, Martin & Lewis and Batman and Robin. We now have Koulaxizellis & Catalano joining the pantheon of famous duets!! Great job Peter and Frank! ** A photo page is included in this Newsletter PIRATES VS MERMAIDS - PLAY In a week already full of highlights – the pinnacle of the week could very well be the wonderful production of ‘Pirates vs Mermaids’ performed by members of one of the school’s lunchtime clubs, the Performing Arts Club. I’m actually short of words to describe the immense pride I have for the wonderful performance by the children involved. It was clearly evident in their performance that they were thoroughly enjoying the experience of presenting to a live audience.

In preparation for the ‘Pirates vs Mermaids’ performance, the children embarked on an exciting, rewarding and challenging theatrical journey that will equip them with a range of

performance, production and personal skills. There is no doubt, that a feature of this experience for the cast members was that it allowed them to discover new talents and take pride in their efforts. It also helped to develop enthusiasm, confidence, self-esteem, communication and social skills, all of which were showcased yesterday!

The beauty of yesterday’s performance was that ALL the children in the school were able to contribute to the performance including our wonderful choir. I’d like to extend my thanks to Mrs Buttifant for her outstanding efforts in guiding the children throughout their preparation – amazing!!

LONG SERVICE LEAVE Commencing Long Service Leave next Monday is Ms Meagan Baldwin (Year 4). Replacing Meagan during her Leave will be Mrs Maria Perre. We extend our best wishes to Meagan and hope that she will have a relaxing end enjoyable time whilst on Leave. Meagan will recommence her duties on the 22nd October. MRS CAROLINE GALEA VISITS I was delighted to be able to escort the new principal of Holy Name, Mrs Caroline Galea through the school last Thursday. I was able to introduce her to each class and I know that the children were very excited to meet Mrs Galea and are all looking forward to her start at the beginning of Term 4. Caroline was able to stay for morning tea and was able to meet staff casually. There will be a number of transition visits and meetings over the next few weeks. On her next visit, Caroline will be meeting with members of the School Leadership team. STUDENTS AS TEACHERS The tables were turned when one of the best staff meetings ever was held this week when Students became Teachers!!

One of the many Student Lunch-Time clubs we have at Holy Name is the ‘Coding Club’ – currently available for Year 5 and Year 6 students. Mr Ling and Mr Catalano facilitate the club, but they are the first to admit that many of the students have excelled in their knowledge and understanding of ‘coding’ even beyond their own expertise!

Some students from the Coding Club were invited to share their knowledge at this week’s staff meeting. Imogen, Patrick and Tom delivered their insights and their learnings to the staff last Tuesday. Not only did these students confidently share their understandings with the teachers but spent a great deal of time preparing for their talk by having very engaging slides. The students spoke eloquently about their goals and achievements. We can all be very proud of these students who clearly showed great confidence and were able to clearly articulate their learnings.

M.A.D. BOWLING NIGHT - LEAN MEAN BOWLING MACHINES There were dramatic scenes at Keon Park Bowl where the inaugural MAD BOWLING Night was held last Thursday night. The night was won by one of the most amazing bowlers of ALL TIME, his style breathtaking, his skill level astounding, his calmness under pressure unbelievable and to be better known from here on out as Mr G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time) and won in awe-inspiring fashion by ………… ME!! I have to admit I pulled off what was, a miraculous victory by bowling well above my own expectations AND everyone else’s for that matter!! A few dads entered the competition brimming full of confidence but soon realised that their amazing scores playing Wii Bowling didn’t translate to the real thing!! The night revealed that tenpin bowling was a contest brimming with rivalry, psychological drama and styles of bowling never seen before! There was lots of ordinary bowling and some extraordinary bowling!! Not all dad’s bowled, with the spectators being very creative with their sledges and ‘supportive’ comments, especially when one of the dad’s sustained a strained hamstring and groin! I certainly can’t reveal all in this ‘Report’, but simply to say that, ‘What happens at a M.A.D Bowling Night Stays at the MAD Bowling Night”!!! On a serious note, a prime goal of M.A.D is to develop a sense of fellowship amongst our dads, and this was certainly reflected in the wonderful way that our dads related to one another, and where friendships were further consolidated and established in the context of being proud of being a part of the Holy Name community.

PARENTS AND FRIENDS MEETING – FETE FOCUS MEETING LAST NIGHT

I attended my final P&F Meeting and was again touched by the enthusiasm and commitment by this small band of parents who perennially devote many hours of energy to raising funds for the children of Holy Name Primary School. As we move closer and closer towards the Fete on 18th November, I encourage you all to take part in these meetings where possible, but at the very least, volunteer for one of the many tasks that will need to be completed in the days before and especially on the day. Obviously, the more volunteers there are, the less work that falls upon the shoulders of others!

FATHER'S DAY CELEBRATION

Straight after school next Friday, 31st August, we will be having a Father's Day Celebration. We'll be conducting a Sausage Sizzle and the afternoon will include some organised games and activities. Soft drinks and water will also be available. It would be fantastic to see as many dads as possible being able to come along and share a fun-filled afternoon with their children who attend Holy Name Primary School. The event is scheduled to end at 5.00pm. Please note that this event is ONLY for children currently attending Holy Name school. ** (Unfortunately, on this occasion no pre-schoolers or secondary-school students) A notice was sent home today to all families via the eldest child. Please check your child’s bag. SCHOOL PUNCTUALITY My thanks to all those families who have obviously made an effort to be at school on time this week. The response has been great to see and I encourage you to consolidate the routine in forthcoming weeks. Nick Marinelli Principal

MEDIA NEWS – PRESTON LEADER, 21st AUGUST, Page 3 I’m excited to share with you the following article about Chloe’s winning poster design for Rail Safety Week. It appeared in this week’s edition of the Preston Leader, on page 3.

IF EVERYONE knew the stay behind the yellow line message as well as Chloe Hidalgo, then safety

around trains wouldn’t be an issue.

The Holy Name Primary School student (pictured) has won the Metro Trains’ annual Rail Safety Week

poster competition. Her poster highlighted the importance of standing behind the yellow line as a

train approaches.

The competition, open to Grade 5 and 6 students from across Melbourne, encourages students to be

safe around trains. Chloe said she was shocked and overwhelmed to be named the competition’s

winner.

She earned a school visit last week from Metro’s community education unit and Dumb Ways to Die

characters for a special presentation of her prize. She received an Xbox One console and a Dumb

Ways to Die showbag.

Communion for the first time.

I would like to sincerely thank all those that worked so hard in preparing our students,

especially Ms Amanda Pacella and Ms Meagan Baldwin. I’d also like to thank all the staff that helped out, to our choir an extra special thanks and also to Father Joe for

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES STAFF MEETING

On Tuesday 21st August, three passionate students presented to the staff at Holy Name their learnings in the area of Digital Technologies. Through the Bloxels app, they

demonstrated their skills and knowledge for creating video games in the classroom. They were able to explain the aims of their games, challenges that they have overcome

and reasons for having this program in the school curriculum.

Over the past two terms, 15 students in Year 5 and 6 have committed one lunch time a week to work collaboratively to create their own original games. They have invested

a great deal of time and effort into their games collaborating with and teaching each

other.

Great news. Our Telstra Kids Digital Kits have arrived. We are delighted to announce our success in applying for a Telstra Kids digital kit.

Telstra Kids helps kids across Australia connect to a digital future by building STEAM skills. Huge thanks to Manuela Fernandez and Annette Bevilacqua from Telstra, who is

the referrer, for applying for the funding for us. We are very excited to share in the million dollars the Telstra Foundation provides each year to help kids connect to a digital

future.

Parents, please ensure you are aware of the amount of screen time children are spending, especially if they have technology like iPads and laptops in their bedrooms.

Children are telling other students and teachers how late they are up playing games and using technology, which is a huge concern.

It is likely that many children spend more time in front of screens than parents realise, especially with so many new screens that entertain. It might seem like a big task to

reduce the amount of time children spend in front of screens, but every small step is a move in the right direction. Fifteen minutes less screen time a day can soon get you

to your goal.

FAREWELL TO NICK Please mark in your diaries…….. on Friday, 21st September, there will be a special

assembly to farewell and thank Nick Marinelli at 9:30am in the Hall.

This will be an opportunity for the school to acknowledge and thank him for his hard work over the past three terms. All parents are welcome to this assembly and following

this at 10:00, there will be a morning tea organised by the P&F in the Interactive Learning Centre (ILC).

Reflection of the Week

Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone's face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment?

Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions.

I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.
