Walking With God

Page 2: First Edition WWG

THE WORD The Bible is God’s Word and it’s alive! When we read God’s Word, it’s God speaking to us and we can hear from Him every single day. Jesus said we should live by every word that comes from God’s mouth, as it sustains us (see Matthew 4:4). To help you hear from God on a daily basis, we have a reading program to direct you through the entire book of John in the New Testament. If you read all of the passages listed, you’ll make it through the whole book in four weeks. Go at your own pace, but we encourage you to read and hear from God every day.

L.A.M.P “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105 NIVThere are four things to do when we read the Word in the selected passages:LISTEN – Listen attentively to hear what God is saying to you.APPLY – Apply what you read and hear to your life. How will you live it? MEDITATE – Take the time to let what you hear sink in. How does this change how you think and see things?PRAY – Begin to talk with God about what He has said to you. Take the time to thank Him, being completely open and honest with Him.

DEVO Direct Encouragement Via OthersThe Bible says to “...encourage one another daily” Hebrews 3:13 NIV. So, each day in WWG, we include a word of encouragement from others who have already walked many places with God. Their insights and lessons inspire us and help us to realise that we’re not alone on this amazing journey.

STAND sectionTake the time every day to pray and make a stand via prayer. “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective” James 5:16 NIV. What an incredible way to impact yours and others’ lives, affecting our world.

GOD OUR HELPERI remember when I was young and was involved in a serious car accident. A car hit us from behind and we rolled a number of times down a bank. The car landed on its roof and we had to crawl out through the windscreen. If we had not been stopped by a tree we would have rolled down another cliff and possibly have been seriously injured.

You know, it’s true what they say—when you think you are going to die, your life flashes before you. As we were rolling I was praying for God to save me. I called out to Him at that time. Yet when I left hospital, all thoughts of God ceased.

Daily when people are faced with life threatening situations, or are depressed, lonely or frightened, they call out to God. Yet when things are going smoothly, they forget about Him until they run into another stumbling block.“I look up to the mountains-does my help come from these? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!” Psalm 121:1-2 NLT.

Go to Him in bad times and in the good times too.

OPEN ARMSWhen I think about God the Father and His love for us, I am amazed that our God, the creator of this universe, would desire nothing more than to have a close relationship with His creation. Yes, that’s you and me.

Hebrews 4:16 NIV says:“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Thinking about this reminds me of a child who runs confidently and without hesitation straight into his parent’s arms. He does not hesitate or think of any danger because he knows that in his parent’s arms he is secure. We can approach God with that same confidence because the Bible tells us He is our “Abba Father”, meaning Daddy. Whether we have been wounded, hurt, let down or have been the instigators of hurt, we can at all times approach Him and His grace with confidence.

As it says in Psalm 103:17 NIV:“That from everlasting to everlasting, the Lord’s love is with those who fear Him.” So remember your Heavenly Father loves you, and His arms are open for you to run into at all times.

JUST KEEP SWIMMING!The other day I was watching the movie ‘’Finding Nemo’’ with my children. In the movie there is a delightful character called Dory, afish with a short-term memory loss. Life is interesting for her friend Marlin, another fish who is desperately looking for his son Nemo.

The pair journey through the ocean and find themselves in difficult, dangerous and hopeless situations. Dory in all her innocence and obliviousness to what is going on around her bursts into a song… “Just keep swimming… just keep swimming…!” Your circumstances might also look difficult, dangerous or even hopeless – let me encourage you today to find your strength from God who says, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT

Keep praying, keep pushing through, keep loving, keep thanking … His strength, peace and joy will come.

THE PEACE OF GODOne of the most important things we could ever do in this world is pray. There is nothing else that we can do in our daily lives that will impact us as profoundly as prayer. Personal prayer is like a child speaking with a Father. This is personal, not public. This is intimate, not exposed to the public. When a child of God approaches his Heavenly Father, God listens. Go into that quiet place.

“He makes me lie down his green pastures, he leads me besides the still waters, and he restores my soul.” Psalm 23:2 NIV

When I was young, I used to go to a place called the waterfall. It was a little park in the Essex countryside in England. I would sit for hours, watching the swallows and dragon flies skim gracefully across the lake, as the water plunged over the waterfall. The peace of the waterfall stayed with me through my teenage years and all through my life. As we spend time with our Heavenly Father, so the same peace rejuvenates, refreshes and creates in us a desire for more of Him and His peace.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” John 14:27 NIV He is waiting for you.

PRAYER—POWERFUL AND LIFE CHANGING!I heard an amazing story from the man himself, who was stung by poisonous jelly fish in Mauritius and should have died. But in a state somewhere between life and death, as the doctors tried but failed to save him, he prayed the Lord’s Prayer (remembered from childhood). As a result, during that death experience he had a life-changing encounter with Jesus, and came back to tell his story to millions world-wide.

The Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:2-4 NIV) is a great starting point if you want to pray but don’t know where to begin. You can talk with God like you are talking with your best friend (you are!):

“Father, hallowed be your name...” — Tell him how wonderful He is to you;“...your kingdom come...” — Ask and believe for God’s perfect plan for your life;“...Give us each day our daily bread...” — Ask for your needs, and discover that God is your source;“...Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive eve-ryone who sins against us...” — Ask God for His forgiveness for the things you’ve done, and forgive others who have hurt you; “...And lead us not into temptation...” — Pray for God’s help to make good choices.

Prayer is powerful and life-changing because we are communicating with the living God.

PRAY WITHOUT CEASINGHave you ever said “starting tomorrow, I’ll get up early and pray”? The alarm goes off and a part of you says “great let’s pray”, then the tired part of you answers, “no, let’s go back to sleep, it’s too early”. This continues for a while until one of you wins. If it’s the God part, you pray; if it’s the “you” part, you go back to sleep. True?

It takes practice to be good at anything, especially walking in God’s ways. We don’t know all things immediately after we first meet Jesus. God chose to make us that way. He wants us to grow in our dependence on Him. In the things of God our ‘old nature’ (the person we used to be before we became a Christian) doesn’t disappear immediately. God knows this. The more you obey, the more you will hear God speak. It takes practice. That’s why it’s important to “pray without ceasing” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV.

Your friends may say, “Why do you pray about everything, such as which way to drive to work. God’s busy you know?” God’s never too busy to spend time with you and your prayer honours God and lets Him know that you want Him to be in every aspect of your life!

JUST THE TWO OF US!“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth; they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” Matthew 6:5-8 NIV

Many of us focus on praying when we’re around others; but it’s important to also develop our private life of prayer. When we have a special friend, we love doing things with them in a group, but the best times, are when it’s just the two of us.

It’s the same with God. He loves to be involved in our meetings, but it’s those private times of prayer that take our relationship to a deeper level. If you want an intimate walk with God, learn to spend lots of time with Him, just the two of you!

USING THE POWER OF PRAYER SPARINGLYA Welsh woman who lived in a remote valley in Wales went to a great deal of trouble and expense to have electrical power installed in her home. After a couple of months, the electricity company noticed that she hadn’t used very much electricity at all. Thinking there was a problem with the line, they drove out to inquire. “We’ve just checked your meter and it doesn’t seem that you’re using much electricity. Is there a problem?”

“Oh no”, she said. “We’re quite satisfied. We turn on the electric lights every night to see how to light our lamps and then we switch them off again.”

This woman didn’t understand the potential of having electricity in her home, and so she used its power sparingly.

Sometimes, we use prayer much the same way. We believe in prayer, we know the promises God has made and we have even heard stories about answered prayers, but we use prayer’s power sparingly…“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24 NIVLet us not take for granted the power of prayer, but utilise every promise God has for us when we PRAY!

NOTHING IS TOO DIFFICULT FOR GODWaiting patiently for God to answer prayers may be one of the most difficult experiences of a Christian’s walk. We live in an age of instant gratification.

Do you have something you’re waiting on God to do? Have you asked Him for the salvation of your spouse, or a family member? Are you praying for healing? Whatever the circumstances, God’s timing is always the best timing.

I can recall seven years ago, my brother had a stroke. He was in a coma for four months. Doctors told the family that he may not live, and even if he survived, that he would be brain dead – a “vegetable.” But our family believed God for a miracle, and we prayed daily for it. Praise God, he was healed, and is now living well. Remember that God has His own timetable that doesn’t always match ours, but in the meantime, we have the assurance that He loves us.

Let’s learn to wait patiently and trust Him. He answered my family’s prayers then, and He can do the same for all of us as we pray, trust and wait for God’s miracles.

“But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Saviour; my God will hear me.” Micah 7:7 NIV

TREASURE HUNTI love pirate stories, especially those about treasure hidden at the bottom of the ocean—the quest to find hidden treasure, ancient maps partly perished over time, the thrill of the hunt, and of course the eye patches and pirate talk. In the movies, the quest for treasure is never easy, fraught with sword fights, cannon fire and hideous sea creatures.

Proverbs 2:4 instructs us to search for wisdom “…as for hidden treasure” (NIV). I’ve always found it interesting that in the previous chapter wisdom “cries out in the street” – but now it is described as something to search for. The truth is, wisdom is plain to see once you’ve found it, but the pathway to gain wisdom is not unlike the one that our heroes take in their search for treasure. Pain, sacrifice, and single minded focus are all necessary parts of the journey to wisdom. We certainly aren’t born with wisdom, and we don’t get it from an inheritance either.

We need to walk daily using God’s treasure map (the Bible!), and remain focused and always open to instruction if we are to find the greatest treasure of all.

Day 10 - Read John 10

DEVO

Further reading: Proverbs 3:1-7

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 NIV

Ever done something silly because you where thinking a certain way? It’s not long after that silly thing that we’ve done, that we often say to ourselves, what was I think-ing?

The truth is that all of us think differently. We act a certain way in life because of the way we think and that ultimately steers our life, for good or for bad. The Bible has plenty to say about the way we think and encourages us to completely change our thought patterns to come into line with Gods’ Word. In the passage above, the Bible says that we can be transformed (changed into something different), by changing the way we think.

As you read the Bible, His Word literally has power to change your life. Changing the way we think, by reading and meditating on His Word, will also help us to know what God wants us to do in life. Read Isaiah 55:6-11 and think about what God has said that His Word will do.

THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT“Again Jesus said, Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me I am sending you. And with that He breathed on them and said, receive the Holy Spirit.” John 20:21-22 NIV

Just like Jesus, we need to minister in the power of the Holy Spirit. We seem to forget that Jesus was a Spirit-filled man. We think He lived His amazing miraculous life in His own power, as the Son of God. But when Jesus chose to become a man, He did not call on His infinite power as the Son of God, but rather, ministered as a man in dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:21-22 & 4:18). He was filled and led by the Spirit (Luke 4:1). He was sent by the Spirit and preached in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:18). He cast out demons in the power of the Spirit (Acts 10:38).

So if Jesus, who lived as a man, without sin, so thoroughly depended on the Holy Spirit for His ministry in the lives of those around Him, how much more do we, who are weak, need to constantly depend on the Spirit to lead and empower us for ministry.

LIVING IN HIMOnce again I drew up a timetable for my month and shuffled around my priorities, trying to make it all fit. Time alone with God; family time; time with my partner; connect group time; time with friends; me time – the list went on and everything seemed to be impossibly competing for a space in my schedule.

My problem lay not in the number of available hours, but in my understanding of God’s purpose for me and in understandingwhat it is to walk with God. When we see it as our own time we are subject to the expectations of others and ourselves, and are blown in every direction by the messages we receive from society. When we follow God, it’s all His time. When we surrender to His direction, His purposes become clear and they never compete with one another.

He desires to walk with us daily, strengthening and directing us in our relationships, our study, our work, our ministry and even time to relax and rejuvenate. Think about Acts 17:28 – “In him we live, and move and have our being” – and take another look at your day.

LEST WE FORGETEach year we celebrate Anzac Day. We remember those who went and fought a battle for those of us here today. Two thousand years ago a man gave His life for each of us here today also. His name is Jesus. When we are continually struggling, He is still there fighting our battles. He has won many in each of our lives. Why then is it that we try to fight these battles in our own strength?

Psalm 23:4 NIV says, “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”

James 1:2 NKJV tells us to, “…Count it all joy when you fall into various trials.”

If we look back to the times we gone through battles, we would most probably say it was still difficult but we can see that we didn’t go it alone. God will not allow us go through more than we can bear. He will carry us through and at the end we will be stronger for it.

1 John 4:4 NKJV says, “…He who in you, is greater than he who is in the world.”

Remember, He is there with you, every step of the way. Lest we forget.

DIVINE APPOINTMENTSHave you ever felt the prompting of the Holy Spirit and ignored it? Have you regretted it later? I know I have. But when I have listened and obeyed, it has been a rewarding experience.

I recall, one time in church when there was a lady sitting behind me and I felt that I should go and talk to her. Believe me, I didn’t go at the first prompt, or the second or third. But finally I went and spoke to her. She shared how she was having some problems at home and really needed someone to listen. Over the next few months my husband and I saw quite a bit of her and were able to help her on several occasions. Though she has moved on now, I believe that the Holy Spirit was able to use us to help her through a difficult time in her life.

You don’t need to be embarrassed about going and speaking to someone you don’t know. If it is the Holy Spirit prompting you and if you obey, you will be personally rewarded and the person you speak to will receive the help God wants to give them.

Are you listening?

SWIMMING BETWEEN THE FLAGSI once got caught with a friend in a rip in the ocean. We were petrified as we watched the waves crashing onto the rocks, knowing that we were headed in that direction. Two guys tried to swim out to us, but the sea was too strong. It was then that a number of people on the beach began to form a human chain that grew towards us. Soon we were safely linked to the chain and pulled towards the safety of the beach.

“For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling, he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.” Psalm 27:5 NIV

God designed the church to provide shelter, protection and a place where His character and beauty can be seen. When we live our lives independently to the church, it’s like swimming on a beach with no flags. When we get in trouble, we are alone, and His beauty is nowhere to be seen. Choose to live your life between the flags. In your day of trouble, you will find safety. In your day of fear, you will see His beauty. KAH

THE CHURCH IS LIKE A BUILDING“Christ who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple … And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple.” 1 Peter 2:4-5 NLT

Recently our family needed help to hoist a new wardrobe to a first floor bedroom because it was too large to go up the stairwell. The window also needed to be removed. We required a handy man for the window and some further manpower to assist with the hoist. I rang around our church family, some of our wonderful mates soon arrived and the task was accomplished quickly and easily. We then enjoyed a fun meal together.

What an amazing blessing it is that God has given us His church (called His body in the Bible), to do life with. When I look around the congregation every Sunday I feel so privileged to see my church family—people that I love, admire, and respect. Sometimes I get a little emotional as I thank God for each one of you.

LifeCC is built with Christ as our cornerstone and we are the stones to make the building. We are mates, mentors and disciples for one another. This is the way He grows and develops us more and more to be more like Him. What a privilege! PEMS

PRAYING FOR OTHERSThe Jewish religious leaders were after the apostle Paul because of his determined spread of the Christian faith. But he continually prayed for others even though he was having his own challenges.

“God knows how often I pray for you. Day and night I bring you and your needs in prayer to God ...” Romans 1:9 NLT.

We can be so caught up with our own personal problems and praying for our own needs that we may forget that we are a powerful resource for others. Who do you know that has a need? I’ve found that few people will refuse prayer for their circumstances when asked. Don’t wait for your own circumstances to change before you pray for others. The God you know, can and will change the life of someone else (as well as you in the process) as you pray for them in faith.

“The king cried out to the man of God, “Please ask the Lord your God to restore my hand again!” So the man of God prayed to the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored and he could move it again. 1 Kings 13:6 NLTSo make it a habit—to pray for others and see lives transformed around you!

LOOK IT’S HUGE 2There are people (the harvest) all around us who need Jesus to transform their lives. “…The harvest is great, but the workers are few…” Matthew 9:36-38 NLT. So what can we do to be His hands and feet? You have been placed by God in your neighbourhood; your school; your workplace; your family; your morning train – so choose today to REALLY live wherever you are. Be involved, don’t rush, listen and be available. Pray for the ONEs in your life, and things will happen in you too! Firstly, you are taking part in the spiritual fight for their life. Secondly, your heart will change, and you’ll start to care more deeply. Thirdly, if you have been fearful, you’ll begin to have faith. And last but not least, your passion will grow so much you will find it’s the very thing that drives you in everything you do! So take the 30 day challenge. Each day: *Do one small thing to help you to really live where you are – say hello to a neighbour; ask a school peer or work mate how their weekend was and listen; smile at someone on the train.

*Take a few minutes each day to start praying for the ONEs in your world. KAH

LOOK UP!“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD...”Psalm 121:1 NIV

A study at Manchester University in 1989 found that during the course of a day, 42% of our time is spent looking directly forward, 56% is spent looking downward, and only 3% of the time is spent looking up. It is when a person looks up that negative emotions begin to diminish, and a calming of the mental processes occurs. Looking up, produces ‘lofty ennoblement’ of a person’s thoughts and feelings.

Sitting with a few friends at uni yesterday, the conversation was depressing. My usual bubbly countenance was squashed by my friend John’s* loud, negative conversation. I sat by Kevin* who had previously confided in me about his rough week. He had his head down, and I knew John’s caustic conversation was not helping. That frustrated me, and I found myself looking up … anywhere above the situation in front of me!

God reminded me that He was above Kevin’s circumstance, and that I could be His catalyst for optimism. So I shared about God’s hope and help, and watched Kevin grow lighter and more peaceful.

If you or someone you know is faced with trouble, point them upwards! God is higher.*Not thier real namesNKMS

Jesus Who?Question: Who is this God person who seems to radically change all those who come into contact with Him? Why do the writers in this devotional seem crazy about Jesus?

Answer: At some time in the life of these crazy writers, God in the person of Jesus Christ identified Himself to them by a life changing experience. They were born again and have never been the same!

Personal story: When I met Jesus I discovered that I was unconditionally loved and accepted and that He had an amazing plan and purpose for me. Before meeting Him, I believed I was “ok” but in reality had been seeking fulfilment in all the wrong sorts of places, but that all changed in a moment of time. Know-ing Him has radically changed me—I now have hope, security, peace and so much more. So could you!

Put your faith in the Jesus of the Bible, He’s waiting for you! “…Here I stand at the door and knock. If you hear me calling and open the door, I will come in…” Revelation 3:20 NLT

If you would like to know this Jesus, then pray this prayer:

Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God, that You died on the cross for me, and that You rose from the dead. I need you in my life, forgive me my sins. Be my Saviour and make me a new person today. Amen!

If you prayed that prayer, we would love to help you on your new and exciting journey with Jesus Christ.
