Scheduling Underway for Pictorial Directory

Scheduling of individual & family photo sessions for the new church pictorial directory has begun. Photos will be taken September 5, 6, 7, 8, & 9 (weekdays 2:00-9:00 P.M. and Saturday 9:00 A.M.-3:30 P.M.). You may select a time online by going to our church website, firstlutheranmch.com, and clicking on the ’sign-up’ link on our home page. This option will be available Monday through Friday. Online sign-up will then be disabled on the weekends so that, if you prefer, you may sign up on the printed schedule when you come to worship services on Saturday & Sunday. The online option will then be made available again after we add in the weekend sign-ups. (By fol-lowing this process we will eliminate duplicate sign-ups for the same time slot.)

HELP US MAKE THIS DIRECTORY COMPLETE! IT WON’T BE THE SAME WITH-OUT YOU! We want to make this a complete representation of our church fam-ily - PLEASE be a part of it! Everyone who participates will receive a compli-mentary 8 x 10 portrait and a directory, whether you order or not. If you are unable to get your photo taken during the available dates at church, you may submit a photo to be used. There will be a $10 charge, and you will need a copyright release if it was taken by a photographer other than Lifetouch.

In addition, anyone who has taken pictures of any events at church over the past couple of years that could possibly be included in the new pictorial direc-tory, please submit a copy (preferably a JPEG or GIF) to Sandy Estill, Corene Messer, Carolyn Maloney, or Lynne in the office. Also, group leaders (SWAG, GIG, choir, etc.) please submit a picture of your groups, or let Sandy know when they meet and she will try to get pictures of them.

The committee will be asking for assistance from volunteers to help the pro-cess go smoothly when the time for the actual photography dates draws clos-er. If you have any questions, please contact Sandy Estill at 563-608-2814, Corene Messer at 563-920-1750, or Carolyn Maloney at 563-927-2429.

Sunday School to Begin September 10th!

It’s almost time for Sunday School to resume, and we are in need of several more volunteers who are willing to be a teacher, a substitute teacher, or a helper for music or in classrooms.

Girlfriends in God, our Women's Bible Study group, will continue to expand our study of “The Battle Plan for Pray-

er” by Stephen Kendrick and Alex Kendrick through September 8th. The study was inspired by the movie "War Room". We will be reading small sections in the chapter book each week and discussing on Tuesday evenings. Join us when you are able. We meet on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00 P.M. All women are wel-come. ways been an essential

part of my life, and I

am thrilled to share

that passion with you.

I am originally from Westgate, Iowa but

have lived in Manchester for the last four

years. I have taught eighth grade science

at West Delaware for the past five years

and this has shown me what an awesome

community we are a part of. I began play-

ing the organ and piano for churches about

ten years ago. Organists and accompanists

are in a short supply so I have played and

subbed for many different churches, which

has truly been a lot of fun and a challeng-

ing experience.

With that said, I am very happy to have a

more "permanent" home here at First Lu-

theran. I look forward to meeting more

members of the congregation and am excit-

ed to join you in worship.

YOUTH MISSION TRIP.....From July 15-21, fifteen youth and three adult chaperones embarked on a mission trip to Benton Harbor, Michigan where they spent the week helping with numerous projects in the community (and had some fun, too). Those youth who went on the trip included: Kelsi Askeland, Kelsey Brown, Annie Cassutt, Libby DeMoss, Tanner DeMoss, Makayla Gasper, Madelyn Hogan, Kaylee Muller, Grace Reiss, Alyx Schiltz, Maddy Schiltz, Shana Timm, Alex Wickman, Megan Wickman, & Kole Wright. The adult chaperones from our church were Dawn Askeland, Matt Gasper, & Pastor Tony Ede.

Kansas Wildfire Fence Project (the following was submitted by Katrina Krier)

On March 6th, the largest wild fire in the history of the state of Kansas burnt up from the Oklahoma Panhan-dle and into Clark County Kansas destroying 75% of the county. In all, it consumed about 850,000 acres and along with it thousands of cattle. Damages to live-stock, fencing, homes and hay supplies were estimat-ed to total into the millions. We are one of many of the families affected by what is collectively known as the Starbuck Fire. We are Jeff and Katrina Krier and along with our two chil-dren, Kalee and Gus, we farm and ranch in both Beaver County Oklaho-ma and Clark County Kansas. The Starbuck Fire burnt through both our ranches, separated by 40 miles, in a matter of hours. Like so many others the fire destroyed our property, our live-stock, and our way of making a living. We lost a significant number of bred cows and over a hundred calves. The animals didn’t have a chance against a fire fueled by the 60 mph winds that day. The cattle that did survive didn’t have a thing left to eat and there were no fences left to keep them at home, but this story is not a story about devastation, instead it is a story about people coming together to help each oth-er. What your church and others that came together did for us is something we will never forget.

Four months after the fire, a group of over 45 volun-teers from your state of Iowa arrived on a Sunday. We know there were countless other volunteers that played a part back in Iowa that weren’t here physi-cally, but they were here in spirit. All of you had to take a leap of faith to come together to help out com-plete strangers. You didn’t know us, but wanted to help anyway and we are so grateful to all of you.

Early on there were lots of good-hearted volunteers coming into Ashland, but we weren’t really ready to take advantage of this help. We needed it, but unlike some of the bigger ranches we didn’t have an extra person to direct this help. We were so busy trying to keep the cattle at home and getting donated hay in to feed them that there wasn’t time for much else. This was God’s timing. With the grass greening up the cows didn’t need fed every day and some of the

fences were done on the ranch we lease, so we were ready to really start the rebuilding process.

This was the single largest effort organized by one group to help the fire recovery process that we know about and it had to be the most organized. Months of planning and preparation by the volunteers were evi-dent. They thought of everything. They brought met-al posts, wood posts, wire and clips, more than enough to build two miles of fence. They also brought the much needed equipment to do the job. This was really important because our tractor used to build fence burnt in the fire so we didn’t have the equipment for this job. The Iowan’s brought it with them. There were skid steers with augers, mowers, buckets and forks. They brought a tractor, a dozer, a track hoe and lots of utility vehicles. It came in semis and on trailers. The place where we raise our calves had never seen so much action.

It was hot and the country was rough and far from any amenities. There were no buildings left standing after the fire and cacti and burnt yuccas poked up from the ground. Despite the conditions, everyone worked hard and everyone had a job. There were lots of them. Crews tore out fence and collected the remains of the old burnt wire and posts while others mowed in preparation for the new. Some volunteers drove posts with the skid steers while in some places they had to pound them in the old fashioned way with just post drivers and muscle. A crew rolled out and stretched wire while yet another crew clipped the wires to the posts. There was even a crew to clean up the burnt tree grove.

Since they sent us army, they had to be ready to feed it and they were. Everything needed to feed the workers was loaded into coolers in a camper brought to the cooking site. It took a team to feed everyone and they came with the fence builders. Seven full time cooks left hotel rooms before 8 am, drove to the camper and started meal prep. Then it was time to load the food and go to the job site to feed the work-ers. A huge cooker was loaned to the effort to grill all the meat and it too was on the back of a semi. The griller did numerous jobs, but most important he grilled the meat for the hungry workers.

The planners left nothing un-thought of. A nurse came to treat the injured, fortunately no serious inju-ries occurred but still she was there just in case. She was part of a hydration team that checked on everyone. With high temperatures and rough coun-try, this was a necessity. …..continued on pg. 10

All of these people giving of their hard earned money and resources is enough to bring a person to tears, but then to have so many giving of their time, that is really something special. The days the Iowan’s were here were the best days of the recovery for us. We got more done on our place than we had accom-plished in the last four months combined. And we really felt God’s love around us. We worked hard, but the Iowan’s know how to play hard, too. We enjoyed every minute of it.

We know that thanks will never be enough to ex-press our heartfelt gratitude for the generosity of all the wonderful friends we have made through this re-covery process, but you will be in our thoughts and prayers for a lifetime. (Note: The First Lutheran Mission of the Month for June was the Kansas Wild Fire Fence Project, and the grand total collected both within and outside of our congregation was an amazing $24,195.27!!)

“Feast at First” a Success Thanks to You! Thank you to these 106 individuals who made pies, worked in the kitchen, or worked in the fair food stand: 23 ladies baked 74 pies, 15 worked in the kitchen with 10 working more than one day, 11 youth worked in the stand, and 64 adults worked in the stand with 35 working 2-7 days. This week couldn’t happen without this great group of workers! (If you worked and your name isn’t listed, please call the office so it can be corrected.)
