ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 ABOUT THE COLLEGE New Horizon College, Marathalli, affiliated to Bangalore University, Karnataka is one of the leading educational institutions of the state endeavoring to provide ex-cellent education and overall grooming to aspiring leaders. Its mission is to create world class professionals by enlightening, educating, inculcating and imbibing a sense of professionalism in every student. Besides a thorough training and instruc-tion on the curriculum based module imparted by the most efficient set of faculty members, meticulous effort is also made to hone the required skills in the students to create well-groomed professionals competent enough to make their presence felt in the international stage. COURSES OFFERED The college offers Bachelor of Business Administrations (BBA) and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) in 3 different streams – Global, Professional, Ex-ecutive - and Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) in 2 different streams – Global and Professional. The college has a teaching staff of 42 and student strength 1241. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE 2017-2018

• Final year results were announced on 15th July, 23rd July and 28th July, 2017 for BCA, BBA and BCom respectively. The pass percentage was 80%, 97.06% and 88.24% respectively.

• The IV semester results were announced on 1st August, 3rd August and 14th August, 2017 for BBA, BCA and BCom respectively. The pass percentage was 88.78%, 83.33% and 86.1% respectively.

• The II semester results were announced on 3rd August, 14thAugust for BCA, BCom 2017 respectively. The pass percentage was 72.55%, and 85.54% respectively.

• V Sem BBA BCom and BCA results were announced on 2nd March 2018and the pass percentage is 85.29%, 91.03% and 96.30% respectively.

• III Sem BCA, BBA and BComPass percentage is 96.36%.83.81%83.44%respectively.

• I Sem BCA BBA and BCom results were announced and the Pass percen-tage is 77.59%64.44%72.66% respectively.

Faculty Development Programmes organized by the college

• The academic year began with a three-day Faculty Development Programme organized for the faculty members. The sessions were on the topics of ‘Psy-chological Challenges of New Generation Learners, Classroom Manage-ment, Androgogical approaches’ for teaching Management, Commerce, Ma-thematics and Computer Science, Teaching of literature at the Higher level, Mentoring Skills, Personality Development and Professional Development. The resource persons were various eminent scholars from the academic fields who shared their knowledge and experience through interactive ses-sions and presentations.

• A two-day Faculty Development Programme was organized for the faculty

members on 27th and 28th Feb. The sessions were on topics of ‘Impact of Pygmalion phenomenon’ in college teaching and teaching skill in the digital era. The various sessions were facilitated by Dr.Rajdeep K Manwani- Co-ordinator in the department of Commerce at Jain University and Dr.Vijayshree-Professor & HOD- MBA department at BNMIT Bangalore.

• A one-day National Conference titled "TRENDS-Transcending the Realms to Enrich the Nation's Developmental Strategies", presented by IQAC of New Horizon College was organised on 28th April. Chief Guest and Key note speaker for the inaugural session was Mr.Vivek John Monteiro - Prod-uct Manager, Digital Core Banking Solutions SAP Labs. Technical Session speaker was Dr. Bhavani Akkapeddi - Doctorate in Economics, Symbiosis Institute-Hyderabad. The paper presentations session witnessed 80 presenta-tions out of which 45 papers were shortlisted, out of which 14 papers were presented by NHC-M across 3 track rooms.

• Mr.Abhimanyu Kumar S, Assistant Professor, presented a paper titled "The

Role of language in Translation studies” in the International Conference on the Cultural Semiotics of English Language and Literature, held at Dharma-murthi Rao Bahadur CalavalaCunnanChetty's Hindu College, Chennai on 2nd and 3rd March.

• Ms.Jissa Varghese, Assistant Professor, participated in a two-day Interna-

tional Conference on “Paradigm Shift in Global Business Practices" held at Kristu Jayanthi College, Bangalore on 6th and 7th March.

• Ms. Amudhasarala, Assistant Professor, participated in the International

Conference on Scope of "Emerging Business Dimensions and Sustainable Development', and presented a paper titled " A Study on Electronic Custom-er Relationship Management in Banking Sector" held at St. Josephs College, Bangalore on 8th and 9th March.

• Ms.Lincy Joykutty, Assistant Professor, participated in the International

Conference on Scope of "Emerging Business Dimensions and Sustainable Development”, and presented a paper titled " A Study on Women's Econom-ic Empowerment at Educational Institutions in Bangalore" held at St. Jo-sephs College, Bangalore on 8th and 9th March.

• Ms.Benila Susan Jacob, Assistant Professor, participated in "Faculty Study

Circle", an initiative for knowledge sharing on topic "An overview of Per-formance Management" held at Sivananda Sarma Memorial RV College, Bangalore on 13th March.

• On 13th April, Mr.Rajesh H, Senior Assistant Professor, won the best paper

award for the paper titled, "Delineating the Role of HR Technology- An In-sight from Star Performer", in the National Conference held at Sindhi Col-lege, Bangalore.

Workshops and Guest Lectures organized for the students

• The academic year began for the students with an induction Programme for first semester BBA/B.Com/BCA of 2017-18 batch held at New Horizon Col-lege Auditorium. The chief guest was G N V Subba Rao -Managing Director ABB Global Industries and Services Private Limited.

• A guest lecture was conducted for I Sem BBA & BCA students by NSS on 19th and 27th July. The resource person was Mr.Jacob Chacko an architect and founder member of ' Save Lives' a Social Awareness NGO, Trustee of Karunya Bangalore and member of various organisations.

• A guest lecture was organized for III and V Sem BCA Students on 9th Sep-tember on the topic "Cloud Computing & its Application" by Mr.Satya Shankar Chirravuri-Cloud Operations Head-Shell. He enlightened the stu-dents about how cloud computing allows users and enterprises with various computing capabilities to store and process data either in a privately owned cloud or on a third party server located in a data centre.

• A guest lecture was organised on the topic "Working Capital Management" by A N V Yashoda-Finance Manager-Hindustan Unilever on 11th Septem-ber. Ms.Yashoda introduced the students to the concept of working capital, how a company can be endowed with assets and profitability but short of li-quidity if its assets cannot readily be converted into cash.

• A guest lecture was organised for III Sem B.Com Students on the topic “IFRS importance and its prospective" on 12th October by Mr.Narayan Nambiar, Director of Global FTI Pvt. Ltd.

• A guest lecture was organized on 13th October for I Sem BBA students on

the topic "Communication and Leadership" by Ms.Himabindu -J Consultant- Cross over leadership.

• A guest lecture was organized on 14th October for III Sem BBA students on

the topic "Soft skills for public speaking" by Ms.Madhur Bhagavat IELTS Trainer-RIA Institute.

• A guest lecture was organised on the topic "Project Development Using

PHP" by Mr.Dipta Roy- Operations Executive, Infosys on 17th Feb.

• Guest Lecture was organized for IVSem BBA students on 17th March on the topic “Recent Trends in Marketing- Digitalization", presented by Ms. Hima Bindu Jonnalagadda- Crossover Leadership Trainer.

• A guest lecture was organised on19th March on the topic "Selenium-

Software Testing Automation Tool", presented by Mr.R.Anbunathan, Soft-ware Project Manager, AMIE. Major concepts discussed were Software Testing, Principles of Software Testing, Types of Software Testing, Advan-tages and Disadvantages, Introduction to Selenium Automation Tool its needs and working for VI Sem BCA students.

• A guest lecture was organised on 24th March on the topic "Recent Trends in Banking Operations in Digital Era", presented by Ms.Hema N- HOD- Dept. of English, Surana College. She spoke about the different types of Banking Practices and explained the importance of Banking in the Digital Era and its Techniques for II B.Com Students.

• A guest lecture was organised on 15th May on the topic "Attitude& Personal-

ity" and presented by Ms.Saumi Roy-Assistant Professor- New Horizon Col-lege- (Bharathiar University) for II Sem BBA Students.

• A One day workshop on "PC - Hardware Assembly and Troubleshooting"

by Mr.Janarthanan- IT Certification Professional was conducted for BCA students on 12th August. Subjects covered were PC Hardware-Exhibit Demo, Windows OS & Hard Disk Installation and PC Assembling & troub-leshooting.

• A film-making workshop was conducted by Amogha Rahul-cofounder of

Namma Karnataka Memes- Filmmaker and Entrepreneur on 7th September. He focused on all aspects of film making including preproduction, produc-tion and postproduction processes. The interactive session was attended by 150 students.

• A drama workshop was conducted on 9th September by Mr.Thomas John,

one of the founding members of the theatre team, Alpha & Omega. He de-scribed the history of theatre followed by activities enhancing the acting, reacting and scriptwriting skills of the students.

• A team from ISDC (International Skill Development Centre) conducted a

session on ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) course for I Sem B.Com students on 18th September. Various career opportunities were discussed.

• A Workshop was conducted on 10th and 11th October by the BCA Depart-

ment on the topic "Programming with Python" for III & V Sem BCA stu-dents. The resource person was Mr.Srinivasan Lakshminarayan, Professor of CMRIT. The workshop covered topics like, Basics of Python Programming, Python Exercises & Practice, Python Sample code of projects.

• "Futurepreneur 2017" workshop was conducted on 5th and 6th October. A talk on "Emerging Trends for Prospective Entrepreneurs" was given by Mr.Chandan Kar from Wadhvani Foundation on the topic "Emerging Trends of Entrepreneurs". He spoke about the major differences between intrapre-neur and entrepreneur, rising women entrepreneurs etc. The next session was presided over by two guest speakers, Mrs.Preeja Sreedhar-Professor at ISBR, who conducted an open discussion on successful women entrepre-neurship and women empowerment and Ms.Renuka Sharma-Jewellery De-signer fortune 500, Co founder of Asthithwa who highlighted ways of mak-ing different types of jewellery and also displayed different types of jewel-lery made by her.. The second day of Futurpreneur was an interclass compe-tition "Create, Launch, Grow". Each class had to create a business plan, launch their product and grow their venture. Each class displayed their products and sold their products and gained profit.

CULTURAL EVENTS

• Freshers’ Day was celebrated on 21st July with the theme RUBIK's CUBE. After many rounds of competition Mr. Fresher title was awarded to Mr. Eli-sa Naik of I Sem BBA and Ms. Fresher was awarded to Ms. Shivani Aisiri of I Sem B.Com.

• Dhwani–an inter-class cultural competition for freshers was conducted on 27th and 28th July. The students actively participated in Voice Out, Debate, Group Singing, Group Dance, Creativity, Photography, Crisis Management, Talent Hunt, T Box, etc.

• The installation ceremony of 3 Leo Clubsby the Lion’s Club of Bangalore

Host viz. Leo Club of Bangalore Host New Horizon, Bangalore Host Neo-zonites Tempus and Bangalore Host Neozonites Locus was held at the Cha-nakya Seminar Hall on 1st August. The new office bearers were sworn in for the year, the pledge was administered and the pins were distributed.

• On 7th August, as part of the music club’s initiative to promote an interest in

the art of music among the students, Ms Amrapali Shindhe was invited to conduct a workshop. Ms. Shindhe has years of experience as a playback singer and as a musician.

• The 3 Leo clubs viz. Leo Club of Bangalore Host New Horizon, Bangalore

Host Neozonites Tempus and Bangalore Host Neozonites Locus organized a

cleaning drive of classrooms and corridors of the premises on 7th August. The idea behind the project was to convey a sense of gratitude towards the housekeeping staff, give them a break from their routine work and under-stand the importance of cleanliness.

• As part of Panache's initiative to promote various forms of dance to the stu-

dents, dance club hosted a series of workshops on 11th August. Panache col-laborated with Cult Fit to conduct a Zumba Master class in the college.

• A Blood Donation Camp was held on 12th August at NHC in Association

with Lions Club, wherein 101 units were donated.

• On 18th August, the literary club organized Big Game, a business game that tests the participants’ managerial and entrepreneurial skills. It covers all as-pects of managerial functions and gives participants a complete insight into the business world. First year students Divas Kaushik, SadiaVali and Krish-na were the winners.

• As a part of NSS & Outreach activity, students conducted a one-day clean-

ing drive in Lalbagh botanical garden on 22nd August. The drive was in-itiated post-Independence day.where theflower show conducted was by the Government of Karnataka.

• As part of Teacher's day, Students Club organised a small gathering of all

the teachers to give them a hearty tribute for their hard efforts in making their future and supporting all their endeavours. Teachers were presented with a hand-made card with a personalised message.

• An inter-class competition was conducted on the topic "Best out of Waste"

on 6th September. Students prepared 03 items out of waste and each class prepared charts based on environment. V Sem BBA "A" Sec secured the first position, III Sem B.Com (PG) and V Sem B.Com (E) shared the second prize and I Sem B.Com (PG) secured the third position.

• As a part of outreach activity and as part of their syllabus, on 7th September,

students of III Sem BCA Kannada department were taken to Dayal Bachan-na Gudi in Bommavara village which is famous for the Lord Shiva Temple built overnight by the ghosts themselves for Lord Parameshwara.

• "Think Quick" a quiz based on marketing and a Human Resources quiz that focused on the various aspects of HR was conducted for all the first semester students on 27th and 28th September.

• "Rebus Oeconomica" a quiz based on Finance was conducted for BBA and

B.Com students on 3rd October.

• An Anti-Ragging awareness programme was conducted on 7th October at the college quadrangle. The student club Navarasa enacted a Street play which demonstrated the ill effects of ragging, recent statistics of ragging related crimes and laws related to ragging. A pledge towards a ragging free campus was taken during this event.

• Tarang 2018 was held from 19th to 22nd Feb. Events conducted- Best Man-

ager, Conference, Cooking without fire, Creative writing, Imagination Fac-tory, Just a minute, Photography, Shark Tank, Tarana, Quick Feet, Spot Light, The Big Picture, B-Dumb, Photoshop and subtitle.

• International Women’s Day was organized by the Women Empowerment

Cell which was celebrated in Chanakya Seminar hall on 8th March. Dr. Uma Warrier, Professor of Organization Behavior and Human Resource, CMS Business School, Jain University delivered a talk on the topic ‘Press for Progress’.

• On 17th April, students of IV semester BCom put together a brilliant act,

staging the play ‘Where there is a Will’, by Mahesh Dattani. The play was enacted in Chanakya Seminar Hall. Principal and faculty members were in for a pleasant surprise, when they saw the 40 min play, scripted and acted by the students, delivering their dialogues flawlessly and emoting to perfection. The involvement and enthusiasm shown by the cast and crew was com-mendable.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF STUDENTS

• Animesh Sharma, NehaYalamanchi and Sachin of III Sem BCA participated in the Semicolon-Scholar Hackathon 2017 on 25th and 26th August and se-cured the first position through their outstanding performance and accom-plishment.

• Students participated in State level Inter-collegiate fest "Yuva Nova-Elemento 2017" held at Surana College. Yamini and Bharathi of I Sem BBA, won first prize in Photomontage competition. Shephin -III Sem BBA and Sadia of I Sem B.Com won first prize for Corporate Roadies, Venka-traman and Lohit of III Sem B.Com won third prize in Finance Event, Sa-chin and Sakshi of III Sem BCA won second prize in Coding and Tech-Chef. Diwas K of I Sem B.com won third prize in Lycrics composition.

• Vivek V, student of VI Sem BBA secured first place in ECHO 2018 a Na-

tional level Drumming Contest at Orion Mall, Rajajinagar, organised by Universal Music India on 25th Feb.

• Anish Singh of I Sem B.Com secured the first place in Bull Run Event on

15th and 16th September in ‘Arbitrium’ a national level management fest for Undergraduate and Post Graduate students of Commerce & Management disciplines.

• Students participated in the Inter-collegiate fest APOGEE 2K18 held at

Dayananda Sagar College on 23rd March. Golleshwara N Pattar of II Sem B.Com won Second Prize in tattoo making.

• Adithya B S of II Sem B.Com, participated in Essay writing competition on

24th March for New India Inter College Festival held in our college and was placed third Runner up.

• The college celebrated the Birth Anniversary of Shri. Hemu Kalani on 23rd

March. The event was attended by Principal, HOD's, Teaching & Non-Teaching Staff, Student Club Office Bearers and Members. Student Club President Keerthana Ganapathy spoke about the leader's contribution to the freedom struggle, which was followed by an observation of a minute's si-lence. The importance of the day was further enhanced by Blood Donation camp organised by the Leo Club and NSS unit of the College wherein 78 units was donated.

• Shashidhar B H (V Sem B.Com -PG), Bhushan K(V Sem B.Com –P), Chandan G ( I Sem B.Com-E) and Harshith M (I Sem B.Com-P) won prizes

• Mishal Kamal of Final year BBA secured second place -Silver Medal in

Bangalore University Inter collegiate shooting competition held at Seshadri-puram college on 16th September.

• Vignesh Raj of I Sem B.Com secured first place in KATA Competition and

second place in KUMITE Competition in Mysore Dussera Mahotsav-2017, held at Mysore on 21st September.

• The college organized an inter-college Kabaddi tournament on 12th and 13th

October for the colleges which comes under Bangalore University. 17 teams participated in the event. Silicon City College secured first place.

• Barshat Kumar of V Sem Bcom secured second place (Silver Medal) In Inter

collegiate 'Best Physique (70 to 75 Kg.) competition held in Bangalore Uni-versity on 14th October.

• Gokul K of V Sem BBA won Gold Medal in Bangalore University Inter

Collegiate Wrestling Competition (87Kg to 97Kg) on 21st October.

• The college volleyball team participated in Intercollegiate tournament held at SJRC college on 30th October and was placed second in the event.

• Tejus R of V Sem BBA participated in the All India Invitational Karate and

Kobudo championship held at Sulthan Bathery, Kerala on 11th and 12th No-vember and won first place in Kumite for Black belt (65 to 70 kg. category) and third place in team Katha.

• The College Cricket (Boys) team participated in the Intercollegiate Cricket

Tournament held at Jain College, on 22nd and 23rd January and secured first prize.

• Vignesh Raj of II Sem B.Com secured Bronze medal in KAI Cadet Junior under 21 National Karate Championship held at Talkatora Indoor stadium, New Delhi from 31st January to 2nd February.

• Interclass sports competition was held from 5th to 7th February. Annual

Sports Day was conducted in the College Sports Ground on 10th Feb. The chief guest was Mr. Manas Kumar Mahapatra, a fitness model who graced the day with his presence and engaged himself in every event of the day showing his encouragement and support. The major sports events were relay race, 200/400/800/1500 metres sprint for boys and girls.

• The College Cricket (Boys) team participated in the Inter-collegiate Cricket

Tournament held at AIMS College on 21st and 22nd and secured first prize .

• Kishore Kumar C of II Sem BBA participated in Bangalore University Inter Collegiate Power lifting championship held at K R Puram Govt. College, Bangalore on 28th Feb and won the silver medal in 66Kg category.

• The College Football (Boys) team participated in the Inter Collegiate Foot-

ball Tournament organised by Bangalore University between 13th to 15th March and achieved South Zone Runners Up and qualified for Inter Zone.

• The College Football (Boys) team participated in the Inter Collegiate Foot-

ball Tournament on 4th April organised by NHCE (AZURA) and won First Prize.

• Vignesh Raj of II Sem B.Com participated in the 17th AKF Cadet, Junior &

U-21 Karate Championships, Okinawa, Japan between 11th to 13th May. Industrial Visits

• The IV Semester students of BBA (Professional & Global) & BCA (Glob-al) went for a National Educational Tour between 21st to 23rd March to Goa along with faculty members Mr.Srirama M-Asst.Prof, Mr.Rajesh S -Sr.Asst Prof and Ms.Jissa Varghese-Asst.Prof.

• Industrial Visit to Dairy Day was organized on 23rd March under the super-vision of Mr.Raveesh - Asst.Professor and Ms.Rajkumari - Asst.Professor for IISem B.Com Professional and IV Sem B.Com Executive students.

• As part of curriculum and outreach activity, II Sem BBA & II Sem BCA students accompanied by Mr.Srirama M Assistant Professor were taken out for a visit to JanapadaLoka or Folk world on 5th April. It is a folk museum that has an exclusive display of the village folk arts of Karnataka.

• Industrial Visit to Bharath Arts & Craft, Channapatna was organized on 7th April under the supervision of Mr.Raveesh - Asst.Professor & Mr.Abhimanyu - Asst.Professor for II Sem B.Com Professional and II Sem B.Com Executive, Professional & Global students.

• The VI Semester students of B.Com went for a Tour to Goa between 8th to 10th April along with Faculty members, Ms.Divashree-Asst.Prof, and Mr.Ravi Kumar Patil -Librarian.

• Industrial Visit to Cycle Pure Agarbathis, Channapatna was organised on 16th April under the supervision of Mr.Raveesh - Asst.Professor and Ms.Kampa Belliappa- Sr.Asst.Professor for IV Sem BBA - A & B Sec. students.
