First Grade Literacy Block90 minutes of instruction

Students will be exposed to:• Phonics- relationship between letters and sounds• Phonemic Awareness- working with sounds

(phonemes):blending, segmenting, and substituting• Fluency - reading accurately and smoothly with expression• Spelling - StoryTown patterns• Robust Vocabulary- introduced through StoryTown stories• High Frequency Words- Bedrock• Strategies for Reading Unfamiliar Words- picture clues, mouth

ready to make sound, stretch it out, look for chunks, reread, skip the word, etc.

• Skills- summarize (brief recap of story) and retell (story elements, details)

• Strategies of Strong Readers- questioning, making predictions, connections & inferences, etc.

Guided Reading differentiated small group instruction

Guided Reading provides opportunities to:

• Closely match students with appropriate texts• Devote time to each student• Teach/observe the reading strategies of each

student• Monitor accuracy and fluency of reading• Focus on individual skills and strategies within

a meaningful context• Be exposed to a variety of books (StoryTown,

Rigby, etc.)

Writers’ Workshop“No matter what, just let them write every day.”

Lisa ClevelandWriters’ Workshop provides opportunities

for:• Handwriting (letter formation and placement)

• Community of Writers

• Prewriting (listing, brainstorming, graphic organizers)

• Writing 1) Narrative

- stories about your life/experiences- imaginative stories with story elements

2) Informative/Explanatory- topic, facts and closure- beginning aspects of research- procedural writing/“how to...”

3) Opinion - how we feel and think with reasons to support our opinions

• Editing (fixing mistakes) and Revising (rewriting parts of text)

Math

Our curriculum provides students with a solid foundation in:•Operations & Algebraic Thinking•Numbers & Operations in Base Ten•Measurement and Data•Geometry•Mathematical Practices•Fluency (add/subtract within 10)

Students have experiences with varied mathematical “ways of thinking” which they apply to complex problems.

Birthdays

• Parent or special person invited to read a child’s favorite picture book and share two or three of his/her baby photos.

• Arrange date/time with teacher

Healthy Snacks

• 15 minutes per day • Only one or two healthy food items and one

drink• NUT FREE – Alternative snack will be offered if there is a

question about the contents of a snack– Snack can be eaten at lunch
