In Service: 1945 to early 1970s; one preservedunit. Built as cab (A) and cabless booster (B) units; railroad-specific appliances.

Primary Assignment: Premier “name” passengertrains, later commuter runs and some freight work.

When EMD was given the green light to build newpassenger diesels in early 1945, it unveiled animproved version of the successful E6, designatedthe E7. A pair of 567A prime movers, rated at2000 total horsepower, now supplied power. Mostof the notable changes were seen on the body andincluded a new and much smaller bulldog nose, aswell as a large, vertical louver or screen panelsdirectly behind the cab doors. Introduced just asAmerican railroads began upgrading and rebuilding

passenger service, the E7 was the most successfulpassenger diesel ever built, with 428 A and 82 B units produced through April of 1949 when theE8 was unveiled.

In Service: 1946 – early 80s, several preservedexamples.

Primary Assignments: Road freight and passengerservice.

Introduced in 1946, the F3 was the perfect dieselfor railroads ready to replace aging steam power.Packing 1500 horsepower, F3s could be set up incombinations of A and B units (some roads optedfor A-A sets) for freight or passenger service, wherethey performed equally well. Replaced by the morepowerful F7 in February 1949, F3s remained inservice into the 1980s, when their advancing agemade them prime candidates for trade-ins onnewer, more powerful hood units.

PROTO FASTFACTS™

In Service: 1949 – early 70s, several preservedexamples.

Primary Assignments: Mainline freight andpassenger service.

Mainline freight service was the last stronghold forsteam power in America. By the late 1930s,diesels had proven themselves as switchers and aspower for the new streamlined trains, but therewere doubts that they could ever be practical infreight service.

That all changed in late 1939 when EMD rolledout its brand-new FT locomotive. Borrowing somebasic design elements from E series passengerpower, but in a shorter, more powerful package, the demonstrator set out on a 35-state tour thatcovered nearly 90,000 miles. Railroads wereamazed at what this single A-B-B-A lash-up withits incredible 5400 horsepower could do, and

orders came quickly. With its proven track record,EMD was the only builder allowed to constructroad diesel power during the materials shortages ofWorld War II.

Starting in 1945, the basic design underwent anumber of changes, resulting in the F2, F3 andF5. But with the arrival of the F7 in 1949, EMDhad exactly what the railroads needed to begindieselizing with a vengeance. The F7 retained the1500 horsepower 567B prime mover of the F3,but with better electrical equipment, it had atonnage rating some 30% greater than the earliermodel. The units could be geared for freight orpassenger service, and were equally at home ineither assignment. Over the next four years EMDbuilt over 2200 A and 1400 B units, which weredelivered in a rainbow of schemes to nearly everyrailroad in America. Tough and durable, manysoldiered on into the early 70s and several havebeen preserved.

PROTO FASTFACTS™

In Service: 1975 – Present.

Primary Assignments: Light road and yard jobs.

Introduced in 1975 as a replacement for agingGP7s and GP9s, the GP15-1 was better suited tothe bigger cars entering service, while the low noseimproved forward visibility. EMD requiredcustomers to provide a trade-in unit, whichsupplied traction motors, trucks and maingenerators, reducing the price. GP15-1s lookedlike 35 Series engines, but had a single 48" fanand “tunnel motor” air intake. Later versionsincluded the GP15-1AC with an alternator and theGP15T, a turbocharged AC model. Nearly 370were built between 1976 and 1983, and many arestill going strong.†Union Pacific licensed product.

N Scale Heritage Steam CollectionN USRA 0-8-0 SteamLocomotiveIn Stock$174.98 Each

PROTO FASTFACTS

In Service: 1918-1950s

Variants: Numerous changes made to tenders andappliances after end of USRA control in 1920;copies built through early 1950s.

Primary Assignments: Yard switching and transferservice, also used as industrial switchers.

By 1917, the arrival of larger and much heavierfreight cars had pushed most 0-6-0 designs totheir limits. Realizing that railroads needed morepowerful switchers, the United States RailwayAdministration developed plans for an all-new 0-8-0. Up-to-date in all respects, these bigswitchers were the equals in power of many roadfreight locomotives from just a few years earlier. The USRA 0-8-0 was well liked by railroads thatreceived it and 175 were completed beforegovernment control ended in 1920. More successcame in later years, as 35 different roadseventually copied the design. In fact, the last newsteam locos built in the US were a series of 0-8-0s, constructed by the N&W in 1951-53 thatfollowed the general outline of the decades-oldUSRA design.
