Rejoice in the Lord! First Communion Instruction is offered during Lent. This is for children in the 5th grade, or older who have not yet had the in-struction. The sessions are planned for Sunday, March 1, at 11:45 am—lunch and class for children and parents; then the next 3 Wednesdays, March 4, 11 and 18, after school at 4:00 pm; then again Sunday, March 22, at 11:45 am—lunch and class for parents and children. Parent participation is required. The First Communion opportunity together, will then be on Palm Sunday, March 29, at the 8:00 am service. A special letter is being sent out to the homes with children this age in our data base to invite them to come. If you do not re-ceive a letter, please, contact the church office for more information and to have an invitation sent to you. Ques-tions?—contact Pastor Holt.

Dear Friends in Christ, So, how’s your Lent going? Has it been meaningful so far?

Have you done anything different to observe Lent this year? Why do we need Lent anyway? Do we need Lent?

In the hymn Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, there are some great phrases that can point out our need...

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;...

Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God;...

O to grace how great a debtor Daily I’m constrained to be!...

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,...*

During our mid-week Lenten services on Wednesday evenings we are using the FAITH 5 as the basis for our messages. (← See side-bar.) It’s a great way to practice and apply our faith at home every day of the week. It’s espe-cially good for families with children. It can also be useful for couples, and even single people as it gives a focus to the end of the day before rest. If you live alone, perhaps, you could part-ner with a friend to do the Faith 5 over the phone. People who use the Faith 5 regularly find it a meaningful, unifying, faith-deepening and life-giving practice. Hopefully, it can build as a habit and routine that will extend beyond

Lent into a regular practice all year long.

Beyond ones individual edification, when we share our faith with others, it releases us from self-centered ‘navel gazing’ to truly living as Christ did—for others. It is in community that faith is most meaningfully lived out.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. ~Hebrews 10:24-25

In the light of His love, Pastor John F. Holt

First Communion Instruction

Nominating Committee The FLC Nominating Committee is busy at work gathering

names and recruiting people to be elected at the congregation meeting in May, to serve in positions of leadership for the next two years, beginning June 1. Offices to be filled include Presi-dent, Vice-president, Secretary & Treasurer of the congregation, who along with the chairpersons of the eight commissions of FLC and FLCW president, make up the Church Council.

The Nominating Committee also nominates the member of each of the eight Commissions who lead areas of ministry for FLC. They include: (1) Stewardship, (2) Education & Literature, (3) Evangelism, (4) Life & Growth, (5) Church Property, (6) Social Ministry, (7) Youth, and (8) Worship, Music & Arts. They also nominate for various committees (Endowment, Personnel, Nomi-nating) and representatives to the Synod, Conference, St. John’s Community Association and Bible camps.

If you are interested in serving*, or have someone's name to suggest, please, contact any member of the committee: Wayne Sletten, (chair), Jean Eaton, Lynn Kermes, Matt Larson, Kristin Larson, Paul Overgaard, Bonnie Schneider, or Pastor John Holt. (*Volunteering does not automatically mean you will receive the nomination.)

MUSICAL NOTES MUSICAL NOTES MUSICAL NOTES Greetings To All--Psalm 51:9-11 Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God …9Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniqui-ties. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. We are now in Lent and in our preparation for Easter and the Resurrection. As we trace the steps of Jesus walk to the cross, we should take some quality time to reflect on our own Action Faith. Lent should not only be a time of reflections, but also a time of renewal and recommitment of our lives to Jesus Christ. Jesus bore the weight of that cross so that we would not have to. He carried our sins so we would not have to. Action Faith means that we have to engage in our faith, live our commitment to Jesus, and actively do God's work here on earth. It does take time, commitment, and energy. It is worth it. The reward is clear--Eternal Life--Eternal Light!! Have a blessed and holy Lent. Maundy Thursday, April 2nd at 7PM. The Word Alive Drama "In Remembrance of Me: Yesterday, Today, and Forever", will be presented on Maundy Thursday at 7 PM. If you have an interest in being in this production or supporting from behind the scenes, please call me at the church.

May 15th at 7PM-- Una Vocis--A Professional Choir from Mason City, Iowa. Their technical excellence and mes-sage through music is very powerful. They are also very committed to commission new works through major composers. They have even commissioned work from Eric Whitacre. Their spring performance, which will be reprised here at FLC will include commissioned work from renowned composers Ola Gjeilo and Charles An-thony Silvestri.

The Svyati Duo. She is a world-class cellist and he is a world class organist, who holds a post at a church in London. Mark your calendars now for this very special event to be held on Thursday, October 15th, 2015 at 7 PM.

Lutheran Church-Jessica Lokken Memorial Music & Arts School & Camp Applications for the First Lu-theran Church-Jessica Lokken Memorial Music & Arts School & Camp are available in the church office. A full outline of the design and schedule for the school is outlined in the bro-chure. We are looking for a huge turnout for this school. If you are an interested youth or are a parent of interested youth/children, please contact me at the church to get on the reservation list for the school. The school will run for three consecutive weeks during June 2015. It is the goal to ensure that every child who wants to participate will have that opportunity! Our goal is to pro-vide a spiritual, positive environment in which children/youth can learn and/or further develop their musical and artistic talents. Have a great March. Please keep our Music Ministry and Outreach in your thoughts and prayers. Peace, Tim

The Cross of Christ As we approach this Easter Season, may we reflect on the true meaning of the cross. The cross is probably the most readily rec-ognized of the Christian symbols, and there is a significance to it. As a symbol, the cross is a reminder of the sacrifice of our Savior over two thousand years ago. The cross itself did not bring about our salvation, but it was the shedding of the blood of Christ on the cross that has made it so that our sins could be for-given. The emphasis must always be on the sacrifice of Christ. We hope that you will notice the Easter Billboard placed by the Evangelism Commission (by the China Restaurant) along with financial support from Ascension, Grace, Salem and Trinity Lutheran Churches.

Don’t see your gift? Any gifts recorded by the church office after February 12 will appear in the next issue of the Messenger. Any questions or

concerns, please call the church office 373-6424. Thank you.

When you need prayer...Call the prayer chain coordina-tors, Betty Ruud 373-5906 or Ione Kelly 373-2141.

All prayer requests are handled confidentially.

To support people at the time of illness or injury we pastors do make personal visits in the hospital, homes or Care Centers. We occasionally check local hospital lists, but sometimes names do not show up on the list. So, please, call, if you want us to know. We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church, if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. Pastors’ numbers are on the recording when you phone the church office after hours. We ask permission before we include a name on our printed prayer list. Please let us know if

you want to be on the list or be visited. ~Your FLC Pastors

Besides youth camps, Ingham-Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camps offer Family Camps in the summer. Go to www.okoboji.org to check out the weeks and speakers. It’s a great

way to have a vacation with a purpose in a beautiful setting next to a ‘blue water lake’ in northwest Iowa. (not so far away )

Also, Okoboji offers a 2-day Elderversity Bible camp experience for folks aged 55 and older. It’s a good way to see if you like the experience before committing to a longer week. Dates are Mon-day—Tuesday, June 1–2, 2015. See www.okoboji.org.
