2 THE GREEN NECKLACE

Original Town Plan 1907

Jones Street (2014)

Victoria Park (2005) Today’s Discussion: Keith Rd and Grand Boulevard

“Completion of this great public way, with the supporting

parks and gardens, will perpetuate health areas and

pleasure grounds within a short distance of every resident

of the present city of North Vancouver, and our municipality

lung, encompassing the central town, breathing, pressing,

forcing into it health and vitality...”

~Edward Mahon

Founding Father

WHAT IS THE GREEN NECKLACE?The Green Necklace is a proposed urban greenway — an off-street, fully accessible path for people of all ages and abilities that will form a 7.5km loop around the City centre. As a key component of the City’s first 1907 Town Plan, it will link historic parks and buildings, public spaces, schools and commercial areas. The greenway will complement the City’s Bicycle Master Plan and existing transit routes, and also provide important connections to other trail systems such as the North Shore Spirit Trail.

As a result, fewer people will need to rely on vehicles to make short trips within the City Centre — especially at peak hours, thus helping decrease traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.

4 WHO WILL USE THE GREEN NECKLACE

Pedestrians include those walking, jogging, walking their dog, pushing a stroller or using a mobility aide. The Green Necklace will provide both a multi-use shared path on Keith Road and a central path on Grand Boulevard that will remain pedestrian oriented.

PEDESTRIANS

The Green Necklace will include an off-street multi-use path on Keith Road and dedicated off-street bike paths on Grand Boulevard. Family cyclists prefer not to ride with vehicles and are comfortable with a slower route.

FAMILY CYCLISTS

Commuter cyclists are more confident riding on the roadway and tend to prefer a more direct route than family cyclists. This project will include separated on-street bike lanes on Keith Road and dedicated off-street bike paths on Grand Boulevard.

COMMUTER CYCLISTS

Queensbury Elementary.

... reported that safer or improved walking routes would encourage them to allow their kids to walk more often to school

According to a 2013 survey conducted by the North Vancouver School District,

for every 7 families that walk to school, 6 families drive to school, and

1 family bikes to school.

Which type of cyclist are you? According to a survey done in

Portland in 2012...number of cyclists using our roads has increased upwards of 50% since 2010.

Staff are happy to answer any questions you may have today. Don’t forget to fill out a questionnaire.

We have developed draft design principles to guide the greenway design process based on feedback from the 2010 public consultation process and pedestrian and cyclist ridership data.

1. Provide safe, accessible, and enjoyable facilities for cyclists, pedestrians, users of mobility aids and strollers.

2. Respond the neighbourhood’s safety concerns identified in the 2010 public consultation process such as traffic calming, parking, potential conflicts between user groups, and impacts on homeowners.

3. Work with local schools to provide safe walking and cycling routes to schools.

4. Approach the design process with flexibility to allow the greenway to fit the needs of the neighbourhood.

5. Ensure that the Green Necklace works within the City’s overall Bicycle Master Plan (2012) and existing transit routes.
