The Weekly Article from Father Shane Campbell Happy New Year! Well, Liturgical New Year! The first Sunday of Advent starts the new liturgical year for the church. We are getting ready to close the Year of Consecrated Life. It has been a great year celebrating vocations around the world. This year, Pope Francis has declared it to be the Jubilee Year of Mercy. A Jubilee Year is when the Catholic Church across the world takes approximately a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way. Catholics are encouraged to join together in prayer, go to confession, and share the genius of Catholicism with others. The purpose of a Jubilee Year is to help people grow spiritually, strengthen their faith, and encourage works of service, and to promote unity within the Catholic Church and society in general. The last Jubilee Year was in 2000, called for by Pope Saint John Paul II Since we are starting Advent, it is a good time to reflect on what our Advent journey should be. The word "Advent" comes from the Latin Adventus, which means "coming." It is a time for quiet reflection, prayer and conversion in anticipation of the coming of Christ from two different perspectives. The readings and the liturgies during Advent prepare us for the birth of Jesus, but they also prepare us for the Second Coming of Jesus at the end of the world. Advent is also a great time of year to start reflecting on your faith life and what you can do to make it stronger. We have the “Word Among Us” available that is filled with daily readings and reflections. Also, we have the Lighthouse Catholic Media Kiosk in the gathering space is a great resource for all different aspects of our faith. We will also be introducing a book study on the “Year of Mercy” starting December 6 th after the 10:30am Mass in room 101. You could also get involved in parish life by being a greeter, usher, lector, Eucharistic Adoration, Eucharistic Minister, and so much more! “Do not neglect the gift you have, which was conferred to you through the prophetic word with the imposition of hands of the presbyterate.” 1 Timothy 4:14 Advent is a wonderful time, a time of preparation and a time of renewal. I pray that your Advent will be a special time for you and your family. Come, Lord Jesus, Come! Have a wonderful and blessed week! Fr.
