WWe are very excited to present a world-class slate of speakers and workshops for the 2016 TODSMeeting. Due to demand, our exhibits will once again be open to all dental professionals onThursday, October 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, October 21, from 10:00 a.m. to

6:00 p.m.! Be sure to come early to avoid the rush and check out the exhibits Thursday before the speak-ers start at 6:00 p.m.! It has proven to be quality one-on-one time to ask your questions from company rep-resentatives and check out all of their latest offerings. The ever-popular Thursday night supplier showcaseevents are back again offering a variety of interesting presentations.

Don’t miss our Friday evening trade show reception, where you can visit with both exhibitors and colleagues, participate in thesilent auction, and enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres. The silent auction makes an annual donation toward the dentistry-related needsof a local charity or organization. The updated total of monies raised since 2005 is over $145,400! We offer sincere thanks andcongratulations to Ms. Gayle Faigan, TODS chair of fundraising, and her team of volunteers for coordinating the silent auction. Please take a moment to thank Gayle and her team for their dedication and hard work while you browse the silent auction.

New for 2016 is the creation of the TODS Endowment Fund in partnership with the Central Okanagan Foundation (COF). Fundsraised through the yearly silent auction, as well as other charitable donations will be permanently invested by COF creating in-vestment returns used to support dental-related charities within the Thompson Okanagan region. This year TODS will support theCentral Okanagan Food Bank as one of the sponsors of Dental Health month in April 2017. We leave a valuable legacy of our TODSMeetings when we support the silent auction, so make a bid, donation, or check out the incredibly popular mystery wall of wine!

Back for 2016, Okanagan College invites all certified dental assisting alumni, 1974 to 2016, to join them on Friday, October 21stat their hospitality suite in the Monashee Room.

We continue to have overwhelmingly positive feedback about the hands-on courses offered at TODS. This year we are offering10 workshops during the three days of the TODS Meeting with something for everyone! Please register early for these hands-on clinics as in previous years there has been a waiting list! Our 2016 TODS Meeting hands-on clinics are pleased to present Dr.Rick Winter, Dr. Jonathan Ng, Ms. Nancy McNutt, a trio of certified dental assistants providing invaluable hands-on for surgicalassisting and sterile setup and St. John Ambulance CPR for healthcare professionals (required now for all minimal sedeation) –the full course. Back by very popular demand will be Ms. Lian Walraven, CDA, with THREE workshops for certified dental as-sistants to improve their provisional restorations; Ms. Jo-Anne Jones, RDH, and Ms. Diane Millar, RDH, with two separate work-shops for registered dental hygienists. Be sure to sign up quickly as our workshops are very popular and sell out fast.

If you have any feedback or suggestions for making our TODS Meetings even better, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Afteryour last lecture on Friday afternoon, don’t forget to attend the TODS trade show reception for some of the most amazing ap-pies! I’ll see you there!

Thank you to the TODS organizing committee, and Alison Hall, Lane Shupe and their team – who truly are exceptional – for co-ordinating another successful TODS Meeting. Thank you to all of our exhibitors for their support of the TODS Meeting. Pleasetake the time to visit our exhibitors’ booths at the trade show and learn about their products and services.

Enjoy your weekend! Sincerely,

Dr. Jillian Belbin,President, Thompson Okanagan Dental Society

IMPLEMENTING A RISK ASSESSMENT STRATEGYIN CLINICAL PRACTICE: EMPHASIS ON OCCLUSION

Dr. John Koisreceived his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania, School of DentalMedicine and Certificate in Periodontal Prosthodontics with an MSD fromthe University of Washington, School of Dentistry. He maintains a private prac-tice limited to prosthodontics in Tacoma and Seattle, and is an affiliateprofessor in the Graduate Restorative program at the University of Washington.Dr. Kois is the recipient of the 2002 Saul Schluger Memorial Award forClinical Excellence in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, and received a life-time achievement award from both the World Congress of Minimally InvasiveDentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Kois contin-ues to work with restorative dentists at the Kois Center, a didactic and clinical teaching program.

Our knowledge about occlusion has been based ongnathologic principles. These concepts are the basisof a mechanical system with focus on posterior deter-minants and mutual protection. If it is that simple, why can’t we predict when or why occlusal pathol-ogy develops or why can’t we always create a thera-peutic occlusion? This program will focus on biologicprinciples necessary for developing a functionalocclusion. New paradigms will be presented toenlighten participants about understanding occlusalproblems.
