A word from Pastor Suzanne...

Dear Friends, If you saw Jesus today, at the grocery store, at work, or at the ball game, would you recognize him? I hope I would, but I’m not entirely confident about that. The gospels share many stories of Jesus appearing to the disciples after he rose from the dead. But often even these men who knew him so well and spent so much time with Jesus did not recognize him or believe it was him right away. So often in life we only see what we are ready and open to see. If our mind is on other things, we might not see the person right in front of us. If we’re out of our nor-mal context, it often takes us a moment to figure out why someone looks so familiar. I’ve run into people at the grocery store who have trouble placing me because I’m not wearing my robe. If we don’t have clues to help us focus our attention, we can’t find what we’re looking for. Jesus surprised the disciples. While they didn’t always recognize him right away, they knew what clues to look for: nail scarred hands, the way he broke bread with them, the tender care in the way he said their name. These were the things that al-lowed them to see and recognize who the resurrected Christ was. Of course, this sight was more than a physical seeing. It led to insight and under-standing of the truth of God revealed in Jesus and that truth changed how they saw themselves and the world. Seeing Jesus led them to a new way of seeing everything. During this Easter season, the 50 days of celebration from Easter to Pentecost, we will be studying the “Jesus Sightings” following the resurrection as described by the gospel writers. We will learn how the clues they used to recognize Jesus can help us recognize Jesus in our lives and in the world around us so that we too can be more profoundly shaped and inspired by God’s truth in Jesus Christ. As we see Jesus, we will learn to see everything in a new way. So keep your eyes open and be on the lookout for the resurrected Christ! Pastor Suzanne

Lay Leader Report I wrote last month that I looked forward to leading a District class for those entering Lay Servant Ministry training. I did lead the class in early March and very much enjoyed doing so. I’m sure I will do this again, though perhaps not until 2014. The District will offer this again in November, with a different leader. At that time, I will recertify my credentials as Certified Lay Servant by taking a second level class. The location for those classes has not been announced, so stay tuned. Part of that class includes a look at the history of the Methodist movement and the remarkable men and women of our past. We also look the church today – all that we as United Methodists do in God’s world. I rejoice when I ponder this rich past and current presence of our United Methodist church. This year, Pentecost Sunday, the day on which we remember the beginning of the Christian church as recorded in Acts chapter 2, falls on May 19. Then on May 24 we observe Aldersgate Day. It was on May 24, 1738 on Aldersgate Street in London, that John Wesley “experienced confirmation of his salvation by the grace of God”. This was a very significant moment in Wesley’s life and very important to the Meth-odist movement, for it began with this understanding. As a result of this nice calen-dar coincidence, we will jointly celebrate these events in a “Heritage Day” worship. We will draw heavily from Methodist hymn writers in our anthems and hymns, in this very much, Methodist worship of our God. In the five weeks preceding this day, we will have one of our FUMC members speak briefly in worship on one of the cornerstones of the Methodist movement. Our inten-tion in doing this is to raise awareness, appreciation and perhaps even pride in the United Methodist Church of today. I very much look forward to this examination and celebration of our Methodist heritage. I am excited by what our church does in this nation and world. I am especially de-lighted by the presence of FUMC in Springboro and all that we do for our neighbors in town. Our heritage and present are both rich! David Finney

Congratulations to Will Leasure! Will passed his interview with the Conference Board of Ministry. This means that he will be commissioned this year at Annual Conference on the Elder track. After a two year probationary period, he will go through a second interview process and then be ordained a full Elder of the United Methodist Church. Once Will is commis-sioned, he becomes an active part of the itinerant system that the UMC follows. We are hoping that he will be appointed to First UMC of Springboro but we will have to await the Bishop and Cabinets’ decision on this issue.

Building Committee Update

The Building Committee has begun regular meetings. Committee members include: Dave Barnett, Stephanie Bindeman, Alicia Butterbaugh, Nancy Clark, Bill Delbridge, Jennifer Fry, Garry Haun, Mark Keyser, and Kelly Smith. Don Files has agreed to be involved in the initial stages. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to reach out to any member of the building committee, or Pastor Suzanne Allen, Will Leasure, or Kim Crosen.

New Worship Service To Continue! “Sunday Nights with Eureka Park at First United Methodist”

United Methodist Men With the much anticipated beginning of Spring behind us, we look forward to warmer temperatures. Like everyone, the guys of United Methodist Men are busi-er in the better weather. Our guys coach baseball, softball, and soccer for our kids. We have lawn and garden duties at home. Many of us play softball for our church team and several more enjoy playing golf at the many area courses. So it can hard to find time for activities like raising money for the United Methodist Men. We understand that finding time for such work is difficult. So we reduced our schedule with the Dayton Dragons this year. In fact, we shortened our commit-ment by 25% in 2013 to make the summer a little easier on our guys and the women who work with us. We still want to support our church, our community, and national issues. Fortu-nately, our treasury is of such a level that we should be able to support most of the requests that come before us. John Stalcup is once again coordinating our work with the Dragons. Please consid-er working one or more games with us at Fifth Third Field. We work in the luxury suites, taking food and beverage from the kitchen to the suites and party decks. We will work games on these dates in 2013: April 11, 25, 30, May 8, 16, 22, June 3, 13, 25, July 8, 17, 30, August 8, 15, 20. Please consider joining four colleagues on one of more of these evenings this sum-mer. With the increased time demands on us, we will suspend our formal Bible study until September. So watch for that important study to resume on September 30.

We can’t all play the same part in God’s band of service,

but we should all play in harmony.

Missions Fund Raiser Please join us at Campioni's on Thursday, April 25th as we support this year's mission fundraiser, Imagine No Malaria. Every 45 seconds, a child in Africa dies of malaria. This new initiative by the people of The United Methodist Church seeks to expand on the success of Nothing But Nets by combining ed-ucation, communications, and improved treatments with the already impressive net distribution program. Campioni's will donate 10% of their sales from that day to our church so we can support this very important mission. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. No flyers or tickets are needed and coupons will be honored. Dine-in or carry-out and support a very worthy cause. Bring your family and friends and spread the word. We will have baskets inside the restaurant that you may bid on as part of a si-lent auction. All proceeds from the baskets will also support this mission. Last year's event was very successful and we're hoping for an even larger turnout this year. If you are interested in donating a basket, items for a basket, or gift cards, please contact Greta Talbot at [email protected] or 885-9374. Or, you may drop off any donated items with Rebecca in the church office. Thanks for your help and we'll see you at Campioni's on the 25th!

Summer Sunday School

Our children need leaders this summer to help them in their Sun-

day school connection. Our regular leaders will be taking a much

deserved break and we need some new leaders to continue the

connection during the summer months. If you are interested in

helping us out and making a positive difference in our children’s

lives, please contact Kim in the Education office (748-2612). We will need

help in our 2-3 year old class, Kid Connection (4 yrs. through 4th grade) and

Mission 56 (5th & 6th grade). Classes may be blended depending on number of

leaders available. Please consider serving one or two Sundays this summer.

You will have a blast and help our children in the process! Curriculum and

training provided. Thanks!

Cornerstone Adult Class Come and join us as we study prayers of the New Testament during the month

of April. We will also explore how they relate to and can be used in practical

ways in our lives today. The class is informal and open to adults of all ages and

stages with lots of time for discussion. The group meets Sunday mornings at

9:15 in the music room and will be led by Barb Geiger during the month of

April. For more information contact Barb Geiger at 937-885-7785 or

[email protected].

Holy Java

We all long for more of something in our lives. In our endless pursuit to feel

worth and acceptance, we find ourselves sacrificing everything for the promise

to be a little more beautiful, a little richer, a little more successful, a little more

loved. How do we break free from these empty pursuits and start chasing the

only promise that will ever satisfy? How do we uncover the hidden idols that

are driving us and turn our devotion toward the one true God?

Join best-selling author Pastor Pete Wilson in discovering the joy and freedom

that comes with seeking after God with your whole life. Learn how to replace,

and not just relinquish, life's empty promises by turning your focus and wor-

ship toward Him. Holy Java will offer this new study April 7 through June 23.

You can buy Empty Promises: The Truth About You, Your Desires, and the

Lies You're Believing for the bargain price of $7.00 each. Please let Maria Der-

shem ([email protected]) know if you will be joining this study and if you

V.B.S. 2013- Everywhere World Fair Time is ticking away! It’s time to start thinking of how you would like to participate in this year’s fun and exciting ministry! What ministry is that you may ask? Why V.B.S. of course! Where children experi-ence their faith in a whole new way! Our evening session will be held during the week of July 15th -19th from 6:00-8:30 p.m. Our morning session will be the following week, July 22nd -26th from 9:00-11:30 a.m. With over 250 children expected we will need as many volunteers as we can get! Sign-ups will be in future bulletins and Decorating Days will begin soon!! More details to come, but call if you just can’t wait (748-2612). Let’s make this the best VBS yet!

Bright Beginnings News

The children of Bright Beginnings Christian Preschool en-

joyed learning about Community during the month of

March. Our bible verse was “Love your neighbor as you

love yourself” (Mark 12:31). We enjoyed going to chil-

dren’s church with Pastor Suzanne—singing, praying and talking about how we

need to care for others, always tell the truth and help one another. We had fun

learning about different helpers in our community. Some classes worked with

hammers and nails and created like builders do, others made doctor’s kits, drove

dump trucks in the sand, or explored our weather. The children became meteor-

ologists! A real live dentist, a sheriff and local fire fighters, complete with fire

trucks visited our whole school! It was a great month!

In April, the children will be focusing on spring. They will be learning about

new life as they watch caterpillars turn into butterflies and grow seeds into flow-

ers. Our Bible verse for the month is “The earth is the Lord’s” (Psalm 24:1).

We will focus on “new life” and celebrate Jesus’ life with God in Heaven. Our

Spring break will be from March 24 – April 1 .

Classes are very full for next year already, if you are interested in being a part of

our preschool please contact Kim Crosen for an information packet and class

availability. Thanks for your support in this growing and worthwhile ministry!

Youth Group (7th—12th grade) Hello all! Thanks to all who performed or helped out at this year's Spaghetti Dinner and Talent Show. It seemed as though everyone had a great time. Just a couple of items on the horizon to keep in mind: We are still taking sign-ups for this year's Senior High summer trip. We need deposits by May 15th. The dates for the trip are June 17-22, at Cedarville University. You can find more info about this event at CIY.com/Move. This year's trip will be a bit different than year's past. Essentially this will be a week long spiritual retreat that happens on a college campus. The hope for this trip is that it will equip our students with some ideas and thoughts on how to foster a deeper faith for themselves. Since there isn't a service component with this trip, we will be adding in opportunities for service through-out the summer. I hope you will join us for the trip! Also coming up is this year's rummage sale. I want you to know early so you can put it on the calendar and be thinking of the date that you can purge some treasured junk. The date for the rummage sale will be Thursday June 6th. I hope to see you all soon! Peace, Will Leasure [email protected]

Did you know that a January 2012 study indicated that 82% of the homeless in

Warren County were from families. The average age of a homeless person in

the county is seven years old! Interfaith Hospitality Network of Warren Coun-

ty will be holding three forums to help the community learn about homelessness

in Warren County. At these forums, experts from the fields of Human Ser-

vices and Housing will discuss homelessness and attendees will have the oppor-

tunity to learn how their congregations can help. The dates and times of fo-

rums are:

April 6, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1270 North Broad-

way, Lebanon, OH 45036

April 9th, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Northeast Church of Christ, 12020 Southwick

Lane, Cincinnati, OH 45241

Opportunities to be an Everyday Hero!

Jackson Area Ministry Seed Project: The collection for 2013 is ongo-

ing. Please help those who are needy, help themselves, by donating seed

packets to J.A.M. Bags with the requested types of seed list can be found

on the mission table in Fellowship Hall. Cash donations are also appreciated

to offset the cost of bulk seeds, plants or seed potatoes. Cash or checks

made out to the church can be placed in the collection baskets and will be

forwarded to me. Donations need to be at church no later than April

7. Please contact Lois Eley if you have questions (748-1954 or medi-

[email protected])

Church Historian: The Church is in need of a volunteer who would like to

serve over as Church Historian. The job involves keeping an organized col-

lection of materials and photos documenting the life of our church. There

will be an upcoming Annual Convocation of the United Methodist Historical

Society of Ohio in late April in Trotwood. This would be a great opportunity

for a new volunteer to receive training and encouragement from those who

serve in similar roles at other Methodist churches. If you are interested,

please contact Rebecca in the church office at 748-2612 or rebecca-

[email protected].

Invitation Committee Members: Our Invitation Committee, which serves as

the outreach arm of the church, is looking for some additional members.

The committee does a variety of projects such as coordinating our partici-

pation in Hometown Expo, hosting a get together for VBS families, organiz-

ing Rally Day, etc. If you are interested in helping with this committee,

please contact Megan Jernovics at 937-350-7061 or [email protected].

Easter Meals Thank you to everyone who provided food and mone-tary donations in support of Easter Meals for the Franklin and Springboro food pantries. Fellowship Hall was abso-lutely overflowing from your generosity!

Soap Sunday Wow— our church really knows how to clean up! We were able to provide a significant amount of soaps, shampoos, etc. to the Franklin and Springboro food pantries. We don’t often think of these basic toiletries when giving to the food pantries, but they are very important and always needed. So thank you for your support of Soap Sunday.

Spaghetti Dinner/Talent Show Women in Faith would like to thank everyone who helped with the Spaghetti Dinner/Talent Show. The food was great and the talent very entertaining. It was a big success and everyone had a great time. Thanks to all who bought tickets and those who shared their talents!

Sympathy Thanks

Thank you for all of the love and kindness shown to our family during my mother’s passing. Your prayers were truly felt and brought us comfort to know what a wonderful family we have here at FUMC. From the food provided and WIF hosting the luncheon after the service to the altar flowers given in her memory from the Cornerstone Sunday class, we just can’t thank you enough! ~ The Lawhorn Family Thank you to all for your heartfelt expressions of sympathy during the passing of Jack's mother, Lorena Eley. It is comforting to know that so many people care. In appreciation, Jack & Lois Eley
