Specially designed for first year international graduate students, this course provides an opportunity to practice communication skills for the American academic context. Students will discuss norms and expectations for graduate study in the United States, and consider the many ways students may navigate a successful graduate school career. Working with other students, they will have an opportunity to build relationships outside their home departments. Students will practice skills for networking and making conversation through synchronous and asynchronous activities. They will have an opportunity to learn about the sound structure of English through discussion of specific vocabulary items of particular importance to their professional interests. Throughout the course, instructor and peer feedback will provide an opportunity to assess strengths and challenges while using spoken English, and strategies for continuing to improve their own proficiency.
