The cattle drive experience is a real high-light on the ranch, offering you the op-portunity to submerse into true cowboy culture. Whether you’re a beginner, novice or advanced rider, cattle drives are the ulti-mate and most authentic way to experience the western lifestyle on your ranch vacation and horseback riding holiday.

For a thrilling adventure that leaves you with a sense of accomplishment, there is nothing like a cattle drive to bring out your inner cowboy or cowgirl! Enjoy a day on the range herding cattle the old-fashioned way. This activity is appropriate for all rid-ing levels, and all guests are asked to go on

at least one on-ranch trail ride and watch a short video on horsemanship safety prior to participating in the cattle drive. Meet your wranglers at the Rider’s Roost at 9:30 am. There, help move anywhere from 100 to 200 head of cattle.

Trips depart at 9:30am – you’ll take a break midday to enjoy a gourmet packed lunch – then get back in the saddle to finish the job before heading back to the ranch in the afternoon at 3:00/4:00pm. Enough time for a relaxing soak in the hot tub or a refreshing dip in the pool before dinner!

Our Texas Longhorn cattle roam the grounds of the property while horses are known to gather in the fields or find a home in their stalls. Some of our more exotic animals include Zebras, Zorses, Oryx, Addax, Waterbuck and more. You can easily find them on a photo safari or a leisurely horseback ride.

The Ranch is home to more than 250 ani-mals, all of which are easily visible from the roads and trails.

South Fork’s Authentic Old West Trains of-fer excursions that transport you back in time to relive an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of ev-eryday life. Once you board the train, the real excitement begins! The great pistons of the carefully restored Shay locomotive will start pulsing, driven by hundreds of pounds of steam pressure. The shaft begins turning, the wheels find traction, and the locomo-tive begins to move. With thick smoke belching from its stack, the train pulls away from the station. The pressure builds as the locomotive is driven at full steam, and the laborious journey up the hills or through the pastures begins. The loud huff of the

stack, the clanking of gears and pistons, the furious scream of the whistle at the cross-ings, and the ever present clackety-clack of the rails will indeed make you feel as if you have been transported back in time.

Passengers will even be subject to “rob-beries” while aboard, in which bandits and outlaws (actors) bring the train to a halt, and fire off real guns (with blanks, of course), not to mention pyrotechnic explo-sions, which really juice things up.
