4. Retaining WallsWe have extensive experience installing retaining walls, both secant and contiguous, in projects throughout Ireland.Other piles include rotary bored, CFA, DTHH, sheet andking post piles.

5. Rotary PilesRotary bored piling methods are used when large diameterpiles are required to provide high load capacity or fordealing with difficult ground conditions such as bouldersand rock. The system uses a telescopic Kelly bar andtemporary steel casing over the upper part of the pile. When the pile is bored to the required founding strataa reinforcement cage is inserted and the pile is usuallyconcreted using the tremmie technique.

6. Rock Drilling (DTHH)We offer rock drilling using down the hole hammer (DTHH)methods for sizes up to 600 mm in diameter.

This removes the requirement for chiselling and coring inrock and due to the high penetration rates of DTHH equipmentensures more rapid project completion. Other drilled pilesinclude CFA and rotary bored.

7. Bored Displacement PilesOur extremely powerful drilling rig is capable of screwinga simple drilling tool into the ground while displacing soilsideways. Bored displacement piles are used where lowvibration and minimal spoil generation are important inproject delivery.

8. Sheet PilingDew Piling, based at Oldham in England, is the specialistsheet piling company within Lagan Holdings. Driven precast piles represent our original core product. All piles are manufacturedto BS EN 12794 standards. We have more than 30 years experience installing pilesthroughout every county in Ireland. Our driven piles may be steel H, steel sheet, steeltubular or precast concrete.

1. Driven Piles

3

1

Driven piles are an economical piled foundation in comparison withsome other systems available on the market. It is a ‘displacement’system in that the existing soils are ‘displaced’ in the ground bythe pile being driven in rather than the soil being removed from theground by boring of the material. This is one of the many advantagesof using driven piles as there is no spoil to be removed from site.Other advantages include:

• Off site manufacture of the piles under controlledfactory conditions

• Direct loading capacity being determined duringpile installation

FK Lowry has phased out all rope operated rigs for the installationof driven piles and these have been succeeded by purpose built stateof the art Junttan PM20 piling rigs. There are currently 7 in the fleetand these are capable of installing a variety of pile types, sizes andsections in order to deal with almost any loading condition encounteredwithin the construction industry today. All rigs are fully instrumentedwith the latest NDT computerised recording system, providing realtime data on length, set and rate of installation and additional recordswhich can be used in our QA management system.

For technical information on the jointing process, dimensions andloads see Page 20.

The Manufacturing Process• Input materials are sourced from other Lagan companies and delivered to our

precast pile manufacturing facility in Lisburn• Casting of piles takes place under quality controlled processes using undermould

heating systems for rapid curing• Each pile is given a unique bar code for traceability and stock control purposes• Piles are moved into stock piles for final curing• Our dispatch office manages the distribution of piles to our projects throughout

FK Lowry Piling has carried out bored continuous flight auger (CFA)piling throughout Ireland since 1990. This is a low noise and vibrationfree system in comparison to driven piling.

2. CFA Piles

The method involves drilling the pile to a design depth andpumping high slump concrete through the central auger stemas the auger is withdrawn.

The system is controlled by onboard computer which measuresdepth, concrete flow, torque and pressure. Given that the boreis supported by the augers during pile construction it eliminatesthe requirement for temporary casing support fluids and istherefore particularly well suited to waterbearing ground conditions.

After concreting operations have been completed, reinforcementis installed by plunging or vibrating the cage into the wet concrete.

CFA piles are installed using Soilmec CM48 and CM50 for pilediameters between 300mm and 600mm diameter. For pilediameters between 600mm and 900mm and bored displacementpiling the higher torque Soilmec R625 and Junttan 18-30 machinesare used for installation.

Launched in 2003, our Concrete Products Division manufactures precast caps, beamsand piles for use in projects throughout Ireland. Our system fulfills growing contractordemand for the provision of a one-stop rapid solution to piled foundations.

3. Precast Foundation System

The robust, durable beams are predominantly precast units made atFK Lowry’s yard from other Lagan raw materials and transported tocustomer sites.

The precast system is a rapid solution to piled foundations, acceleratingthe build program for the contractor by reducing the timescale forfoundation completion by up to fifty per cent. We also negate the needfor an external design cost as full design of the foundation system isdelivered in-house.

Additional benefits include reduced wastage, a safer system of work, higher QA standards, non-weather dependant implementation, and fullyinsured, certified and guaranteed solutions. The contractor also hasonly one sub-contractor to deal with, reducing the number of differenttrades and suppliers and management of those trades on site.

The foundation system is installed using either our Junttan PM20 rigsor our new excavator mounted Viking piling hammer and 30 tonnetracked excavator.

Our beams are manufactured in either 350mm or 450mm widths ina quality controlled environment. Each solution is designed to suitthe requirements of the individual project. In addition to the exampleprojects detailed below, we also provide solutions for smallerdevelopments and even single self build houses throughout Ireland.

We have extensive experience installing retaining walls, both secant and contiguous,in projects throughout Ireland. These walls can be constructed to tight tolerancesclose to existing buildings to maximise basement size. FK Lowry is viewed within theindustry as offering the full package from design to successful project delivery.

4. Retaining Walls

Both types of walls can be designed to cantilever or propped(anchored external or internal) to restrict displacement of the wall.Secant walls will provide protection against water up to Type A inaccordance to BS8102. Sequencing of installation is also ofparamount importance in the installation of both types of wall.

These walls maximize the space of the basement footprint whichis of increasing interest to developers as land prices continue toescalate. These walls can also be designed to take permanentloads, both axial and moment, from the structure above reducingthe need for internal columns within the basement.

Contiguous and secant walls can be installed using our entireCFA fleet. The selected rig is dependent on ground conditionsand required pile size.

The table below illustrates how we have been involved in projects ofall sizes. At present we have the capability to install walls up to 900mmin diameter with a pile length up to 25 metres. The retained height isdependent on ground conditions, the largest to date being 14 metres.

Rotary bored piling methods are used when large diameter piles arerequired to provide high load capacity or for dealing with difficult groundconditions such as boulders and rock.

5. Rotary Piles

In operation, a telescopic Kelly bar and temporary casing is used toform piles up to 60m in depth which greatly exceeds even the largestof CFA piling rigs. The augers fitted to this type of rig are “short”flights with the augered soil brought to the surface and removed fromthe auger by “spinning off”. Various tools can be used to deal withvariable ground conditions encountered including bottom-openingdigging buckets for gravels and core barrels equipped with hardenedteeth for breaking up weakly cemented deposits.

Forming the pile with rotary boring equipment requires installation oftemporary steel casings over the upper portion of pile bore which isin loose or weak unstable ground. The temporary casing also sealsoff water below the water table and allows the pile to be constructedin a dry bore. Typically, the steel casing is handled by a crane andinserted using the rig or a casing oscillator. A stabilising fluid suchas bentonite or polymer may be added when it is not possible to installcasings to sufficient depth to ensure stability of bore during drilling.

Concreting in “dry” bores is usually a straightforward procedure. Oncompletion of the drilling, the reinforcement is placed with suitablespacers centrally in the bore. During concreting, the casing is withdrawn, always maintaining a head of concrete within the casing. In water-bearing ground the tremmie method of concreting is employed toensure that concrete is placed to the base of the pile.

Additional advantages of rotary bored piling methods over standardCFA piling include, firstly, that concrete can be left low where deepcut offs are required. Secondly, given that the reinforcement is placedin the pile bore prior to concreting, it is possible to use much longerreinforcement cages than is possible with CFA.

FK Lowry Piling can provide rock drilling using down the holehammer (DTHH) methods at pile sizes up to 600mm diameter.

6. Rock Drilling (DTHH)

This removes the requirement for chiselling and coring in rockused in rotary bored piling and due to the higher penetrationrates of DTHH equipment this ensures more rapid completionof the project.

DTHH piles are typically used as an alternative to rotary boredpiling methods when high rock levels or the presence of bouldersprohibit the use of standard CFA bored piling. The loading capacitycan be significantly higher than CFA given that the piles can befounded within competent rock.

There are challenges associated with the DTHH system. Thissystem is for rock drilling and therefore the system does not dealwell with overlaying strata. In such instances overburden systemsare required which include the provision of temporary or permanentcasings. It is also essential to control the issue of rock chippingsand dust by using water injection in the lines, shrouding of thehammer and adequate protective site hoarding.

Example projects using DTHH include:

Bored displacement piles are used where low vibration andminimal spoil generation are important in project delivery.

7. Bored Displacement Piles

14

Bored piles are normally selected due to low vibration duringinstallation compared to driven displacement systems. However, bored piles generally produce spoil as the material is removedfrom the bore and replaced with concrete in situ.

Bored displacement piles also have the advantage of low vibrationbut are formed by rotating and pushing the digging tool into theground and displacing the sides of the bore. Hence little or nospoil is generated by a bored displacement system.

Bored displacement piling requires very high torque machinesin order to screw the drill rods and tool into the ground. Not allground conditions are suitable for this method of piling and itsuse is generally limited to granular rather than cohesive materials.

We have developed new digging tools to ensure our plant issuitable for a wider range of ground conditions. Other benefitsof this approach include reduced pile lengths for equivalent orgreater load capacity.

Displacement piles are installed using Soilmec R625 and Junttan18-30 piling rigs.

Pile JointingThe Section to be joined is lowered on to the previously driven section. A metallocator, fitted as the pile is being lifted, assists in precise mating of the two jointplates. Four locking keys are inserted in the corners of the pile and driven home.Final security of the joint is achieved by burring over joint plate corners to lockthe keys permanently in position.

The standard Hardrive joint is designed to match the pile strength in compressionand tension. For specific conditions a modified Hardrive joint is available that fullymatches the pile strength in compression, tension and bending.

Pile Dimensions and LoadsHardrive piles can be manufactured in nominal sizes ranging from 250mm to 355mmsquare and with design loads ranging up to 1500 kN. Standard sizes manufacturedin Ireland are given in the table below. For guidance purposes only, typical normalmaximum pile lengths and loads are given but in favourable circumstances, Hardrivepiles have been installed with capacities and lengths in excess of these. The actualloading of piles under specific contract conditions depends upon the spacing andlength of the piles and sub-strata conditions. Hardrive piles have been successfullydriven to depths in excess of 70 metres in ideal conditions.

1 Having installed the first pile unit the secondone is lowered on to it and aligned by means of the metal ferrule

2 & 3 Four locking keys are inserted in the corners of the pile joint and driven home.

4 The ends of the plate corners are deformedto lock the keys permanently into the joint.

Driven precast piles represent our original core product. We have more than30 years experience installing them throughout every county in Ireland. Ourdriven piles may be steel H, steel sheet, steel tubular or precast concrete. For further information on our projects and the manufacturing process see page 8

Lateral LoadsDepending upon the precise loading and soil conditions.Hardrive piles can be designed to withstand some degreeof lateral loading.

As a guide, a vertical pile would normally be designed tosustain a lateral load of more than 2-3% of its designedaxial load (typically 10-25kN) in favourable groundconditions. For higher lateral loads it is normal to takeadvantage of the ability of the Hardrive pile to be drivenat a rake of up to 1 in 3.

A note of caution should be sounded in that rakingpiles may be subject to high bending stresses wheninstalled through deep fill or compressible soil asmay occur beneath, for example, an embankment. Our technical department would be pleased to adviseon individual situations.

ConcreteThe piles are cast in factory conditions using highstrength concrete with a characteristic strength of50N/mm2. The mix is also designed to provide a highearly strength to allow demoulding of the units within24 hours of casting.

ReinforcementThe reinforcement cage is composed of four mainlongitudinal bars bound into the corners of the squarespiral or helix which forms the lateral reinforcement. Thelongitudinal reinforcement bars are usually high yieldsteel of either 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, or 25mm diameter, depending upon the loading conditions.

As an alternative configuration eight 12mm diameter highyield steel bars can be used. The spacing of the links ofthe lateral steel varies along the body of the pile, beingclosest at the end of each unit to restrain the burstingforces generated during driving.

Main longitudinal reinforcement is either hot-rolledor cold-worked deformed high yield steel to BS4449:2005with a minimum specified characteristic yield strength(s-c-y-s) of 500N/mm2. Spiral reinforcement is round mildsteel bar to BS4482:2005 with a minimum s-c-y-s of250N/mm2 or hard drawn high yield steel wire toBS4482:2005 with a s-c-y-s of 500N/mm2.
