You Know Your Classroom is Flat if…
You and your students use Twitter, Meebo, MSN, Google Chat and other forms of ‘instant’ messaging to communicate with each other and around the world
http://twitter.com/flatclassroom
You Know Your Classroom is Flat if…
You expect to hear from your students via a Ning message rather than an email
http://flatclassroomproject.ning.com
You Know Your Classroom is Flat if…
There is no need to go into lengthy demonstrations of new software.
Good software is intuitive, students get bored with you talking so the best thing to do is let them play and explore it
You Know Your Classroom is Flat if…
You and your students expect to have regular, if not daily, conversations with teachers and students from other countries
Level the ‘Playing Field’ Culturally Emotionally Pedagogically
Provide equal opportunities for ALL participants to succeed
Provide the engagement and competitive element to want to succeed
Global Collaboration: A ReviewGlobal Collaboration 1.0 • Individual classroom work with some commonalities with partner(s)• Shared online via common website• Coordinated by central body e.g Epals, Cyberfair• Some minimal interaction between participants• Low-level use of technology and online tools for interaction
Global Collaboration 2.0• Classrooms get to know another class(es)• Connections and interactions (synchronous and/or asynchronous) are more common and planned• Working towards a shared goal e.g. iEARN Learning Circles
Global Collaboration 3.0• Fully engaged teachers who communicate with all participants• Use of Web 2.0 tools for communication, interaction and creation• Different classrooms globally work together on a theme/project• Common assessment objectives• High expectations for connectivity and collaboration on teachers and students• Extended community partners included• Output may be individual but includes input from others• Output uses multimedia and attempts to make a difference to the immediate or extended environment
Global InteractionDo it, don’t just talk about it

Let’s join our student’s together from the ‘other side of the flat world’
And the result has fundamentally changed the way we as individual educators approach what we do in the classroom…..how we do it…..and who we do it with……
Education cannot be in isolation…..

Communicate
“But what if they think we are all terrorists??”
Communication Issues“I haven’t heard from a team member”
Communicate OFTEN, CLEARLY,
RESPONSIBLY
“I don’t understand what they are saying”
“My father told me if someone says bad words to me I am to say bad words back”
“I was sharing some Flat Classroom experiences with colleagues last night over dinner. We were talking about curriculum reform and School 2.0 requirements. It dawned on me that we need to be creating these opportunities for students to interact with others and communicate and collaborate in order to learn more about what life is like in all parts of the world. We need to be promoting innovation and creativity and move into higher order thinking rather than robotic-style teaching. My Grade 10 Flat Classroomers this semester were meant to be doing a unit of work focusing on Adobe Premiere and video making. I 'transformed' this unit into the Flat Classroom so that we could participate. This means we will not be learning Premiere in as great a depth. But hey, what would you rather be doing, learning Premiere or helping to dispel the myth that all Middle Easterners are terrorists via a pro-active network of youth who are part of the future of this world??”
