There are special considerations required when waterproofing a flat roof.

Recent project by F.E.W Waterproofing in Melbourne.

Page 4: Flat Concrete Roof Waterproofing

• Flat roofs are constantly exposed to the full effects of external weathering.

• And unfortunately these roofs also can be inefficient in their ability to shed water.

• Flat roofs also harbour more dirt and debris at joints, details and around penetrations, such as service ducts or pipes.

• This accelerates the deterioration of roof membranes and waterproofing systems.

It is important to use experienced waterproofing applicators who can select the correct products and methodology.

Thorough concrete preparation prior to waterproofing is an important step

Page 6: Flat Concrete Roof Waterproofing

• A smooth, monolithic concrete surface is required for proper membrane adhesion - so all surfaces must be free of voids, spalled areas, loose aggregates, and sharp protrusions and with no coarse aggregate visible.

• To ensure correct surface preparation we use broom, vacuum cleaner and/or compressed air to remove dust, loose stones, and debris.

The F.E.W Waterproofing team take great care inspecting all surfaces as these must be thoroughly clean prior to installing a waterproofing membrane.

Apply appropriate sealants to joints, junctions, surface defects and

penetrations.

After careful prep, the concrete must be cured and dry before waterproof application can begin.

This surface was very porous so we applied a special environmentally friendly primer to reduce out gassing.

Liquid Rubber, a heavy-duty membrane, was used as the concrete needed to be protected from the effects of water, salt or chemical damage both above and below grade.

Unlike adhesive applied sheet membranes, seamless Liquid Rubber prevents

tracking of water underneath; providing superior protection.

• Liquid Rubber membrane will not degrade in sunlight and importantly unlike bitumen roofing materials; require no naked flames on site.

• This product provides excellent waterproofing and chemical resistance through a highly flexible seamless membrane that resists cracking and aging.

• Liquid Rubber applications include poured concrete and block foundations, retaining walls, and tunnel liners, parking deck structures, concrete water and wastewater containment tanks.
