Bristol has a wonder ul architecturalculture, where each style is representedin a relatively small area. Every streethas visual treats; the variety o design andconstruction can create really interestingplaces to live and work in. Consequentlythe opportunities to maintain and altersuch buildings are both testing andexciting: new spaces can be created romold ones, in ways that the original architectcould not have imagined. O course thereare challenges in carrying out this work:there are various legal restrictions andrules that should be acknowledged, suchas Listed Building Consent and BuildingRegulations Approval, as well as thestructural demands o these changes.

Also, current environmental concernsrequire that the thermal per ormance o a building is considered when alterations

are being designed. Such work requiresunderstanding and care or the buildingand its users, so that its architectureand character are maintained, while theoccupants are respected.

The BEAM team are passionate aboutaltering buildings creating betterspaces with existing resources. They arewidely experienced in the re urbishmentand structural alteration o a variety o structures. Also, more topically, eco-upgrades this involves measuring andimproving the thermal per ormance o a building. A ull energy survey can becarried out, with impartial design advice, helping the building to evolve in suchtimes o change, when we must manageour resources more respect ully. They haveworked with many architects, engineersand surveyors, creating lovely projects.

Bristol-based renewable energy company Sunlight Futurehas gone the extra mile or green energy. The companyis running the frst medium-range electric van in Bristol and its charged by solar energy.

The Kangoo Van Z.E. was recently bought rom Bristol Renault dealer CityMotors, and when charged rom traditional energy it produces less than athird o the carbon emissions o a diesel equivalent. The Sunlight Future vanis charged with renewable energy generated by the solar array on the roo o the Create Centres eco-home, where the company is based. Charging thezero-emissions van with renewable energy means that it is e ectively carbon-neutral or Sunlight Future to run.

Powered by renewably sourced electricity, the Sunlight Future electric van isalso instantly protected rom uel price rises.

People can visit the van at the Renault ZE roadshow, @Bristol, 19-21 Octoberor visit the website to see a video o it in action.

Christmas is coming; the email boxis getting at. Like the innocent littlefurry o snow that presages a blindingwhite-out with motorway drivers being

ound rozen in their company cars, therestaurant Christmas season diningo ers are dri ting down out o the e-sky.

Yule is o course Valentines Day squared;its the big one, the nice little earner, thepay day that will hope ully make up orthe disaster o the Olympics, the summer

o sport when, or most restaurants, the diners stayed away in droves.

Up and down the country some poorsoul in the o fce, the one that didnt runaway ast enough, has been saddledwith the task o organising his or herdepartments Xmas lunch or dinner. Andup and down the country, restaurantso every shape and size are fring oemail o ers and seeing i they cantsqueeze in an extra table or two whilecancelling all sta leave until January.

Che s o course or the most part couldnot really bother coming in; the majorityo people at an o fce Xmas meal areinsensible with drink be ore the mainsarrive and ready or a stand-up fghtby dessert. All che has to do is makesure the choice o starters is limited, pre erably stu that can be served cold, the mains so simple a monkey could cookthem, and desserts are stacked high inthe reezer. Never mind the Michelinstar mate, this is serious money!

For the ordinary diner, December is simplya no-go area; you really dont want to bein the same restaurant as the o fce party.Your order will be orgotten as the waiterstry to handle an increasingly loud table o10 all play ully throwing bread rolls, andthen lumps o ood, at each other. Soonthe sta will have to tackle the problem opeople either heaving their guts out in thetoilets (Rebecca doesnt normally drink)or having steamy a air in there (Rodand Paula have been eyeing each other

up all year). You and your timid enquiryas to where your main course has got toreally have no chance. And rankly, youdont want to hear the answer anyway.

It doesnt matter whether the restaurant isthe local trattoria or the best ood palacein London, the o fce party will be just thesame. The latter bunch may be payingmore but theyll still act like teenage lagerlouts and wont even taste their ood.Che s kidding himsel i he thinks a bunch

o well-oiled hedge und managers give atoss about his garnish, it will still be usedas a missile however good it may look.

The best thing is to not book but peer infrst. I you see the signs o o fce party, move on. That bloke dancing on the tablewhile eating oie gras is a warning, and inall probability it will turn out to be me...

    Suits letloose for festive

    frolics

Its that time o year again when Nick Harman looks orward to the Christmas o fce party...
