Suffolk Facts
Fleece Weight
48 pounds (1.83.6 kg)
Staple length2312 inches (59 cm)
Fiber Diameter
2533 microns (spinning counts 46s58s)
lock characteriSticS
Dense, resilient, medium-grade eeces, with blocky,
rectangular staples that hold together and may be
hard to distinguish rom each other.
natural colorS
White. There may be a ew black fbers, because
these breeds have colored aces, but any o-colorfbers lower the commercial value o the wool.
n: At the time o our research, there is a
processed fber sold as grey Suolk that dem-
onstrates ew o the qualities that characterize
Suolk wool, diering rom breed expectations in
length, crimp pattern, presence o kemp, and other
regards, in addition to the expected color. Weve
traced this fber back as ar as toward its sources
as we can and have not been able to determine
defnitively what it is. Its enjoyable wool to use, but
it is completely unlike any Suolk we have ever seen
or spun or read about. Spinners who use it shouldnot make assumptions about Suolk based on their
experiences with this fber.

Using Suffolk Fleece
Dy. This wool dyes nicely. It isnt lustrous, but
the colors wont be at.
F d s s. This is a nice,versatile, medium-handling wool. Shorter eeces
can be carded; longer ones will want to be icked
or combed. Spin to maintain the lot and springy
character, keeping the drating on the light side and
the twist at moderate levels.
k, , d wv. Great or socks,
mittens, hats, and everyday sweaters. The fner
eeces will work next to the skin but still have gooddurability.
bs w f. Being unnecessarily overlooked as a
fber resource or handspinners.

Derbyshire Gritstone Facts
Fleece Weight
5612 pounds (2.33 kg)
Staple length
48 inches (1020.5 cm), most likely around6 inches (15 cm)
Fiber Diameter
2731 microns (spinning counts 50s56s)
lock characteriSticS
Blocky staples with very short, pointed tips; the
locks are not particularly distinct rom each other
and tend to disengage rom the eece in long
strips. Crimp well developed but disorganized.
May contain some black fbers or kemp (although
our sample had none).
natural colorS
White.
Using Derbyshire Gritstone Fleece
Dy. Our samples had a very subtle bit o luster,
which suggests clear colors with more light reec-
tion than in the other breeds in this group.
F d s s. The length
suggests picking and spinning rom the locks
(which need to be loosened up) or combing.Carding will work well with a shorter eece or a
long-staple selection i the staples are cut in hal.
Easy to drat. The longer-stapled eeces can be
low-twist bulky singles, and other lengths will make
nice yarns in weights ranging rom lace to bulky
plied yarns.
k, , d wv. Unusually fne or
this group o breeds, Derbyshire Gritstone is one o
the workhorse wools, like a classic knitting worsted;
it is a versatile choice or projects that call or mid-
range wools, like sweaters, blankets, and wet-acedor balanced weave structures.
bs w f. Exceptionally good quality and fne
wool or a breed that is part o this amily.

much coarser than we were led to expect, although
not altogether surprising given the breeds rar-

Lustrous. Triangular. May contain hair and/or kemp, especially on the hindquarters.
natural colorS
Black; possibly sun-bleached or turning to gray with
age; sometimes very dark brown.
Using Hebridean Fleece
Dy. This is generally pointless or Hebridean
eece.
F d s s. Preparation
and spinning approaches depend on fber length
and whether the eece is double coated or not, and
on whether you want to separate qualities o fber
or spin them together. Depending on individual
eece characteristics, the spinning may be a little
challenging.
k, , d wv. Use Hebridean
where you want the luscious black color and a lot o
durability. It is great or outerwear.
bs w f. Dark, lustrous color.
