RAPID BAY – Four years afterthe old and dilapidated Rapid Bayjetty was closed to the public, caus-ing uproar, a brand new one nowstands completed alongside it.
Already christened with squidink, fishermen, scuba divers, localsand visitors have been making gooduse of the new jetty since the barri-cades came down two weeks ago.
Rated as one of the country’s topfishing and diving spots, access tomost of the existing jetty was closedon Christmas Eve 2004 after it wasdeemed unsafe.
The local community, anglers anddivers have rallied for the jetty’s
future ever since, forming theFriends of the Rapid Bay Jetty lessthan two weeks later.
Their prayers were answeredwhen the state governmentannounced in September 2006plans to build a new $3.9 millionstructure.
Rough weather prevented con-struction firm Bardavcol from fin-ishing the jetty by the end of lastyear as planned.
However, Friends of the RapidBay Jetty members are extremelypleased to see the jetty finally com-pleted after a long and arduouscampaign.
“I am just so happy for the wholedistrict; it is really going to benefit
everyone,” spokesperson GleniceGalbraith said.
As former co-owner of theDelamere General Store, Glenicesaid business halved when the oldjetty was closed.
“People were so upset, but it was-n’t just the businesses that wereaffected,” she said.
“The overall affect on people mademe realise what it is for people andhow much they love the place too;not just locals but internationaltourists too.”
Only weeks after the jetty’s com-pletion, the store’s current owner,Kaye Maslin, is already enjoying anincrease in business.
“Locals are telling me that more
people than usual are camping hereon weekends; everyone is so excit-ed,” she said.
The new 240m jetty features solarlighting, stairs and platforms fordivers and is expected to boost thetown’s tourism.
“It is a popular attraction for theregion … (and) I certainly think itwill get more people coming backinto Rapid Bay,” Fleurieu PeninsulaTourism’s Roz Becker said.
“It is a really good camping spotfor families wanting cost-effectiveholidays, right on the beautifulbeach front.”
The new jetty has also been giventhe tick of approval from divers, attracted to the spot for the richdiversity of marine life supported bythe old jetty, which is expected toremain alongside the new structure.
Antony King of the Friends ofRapid Bay Jetty and the ScubaDivers Federation of S.A. said thejetty provides easier and saferaccess for divers.
“Previously, divers had to walkover slippery rocks, swim 300-400mand were a long way out if they gotinto trouble,” he said.
“Now anyone who comes frominterstate or overseas to dive will bevery impressed by the facility.
“It is one of the best places to seethe leafy sea dragon and is there-fore a real drawcard for the region.
“Sometimes the sea dragons willgently settle on the ocean floor ametre away, moving back and for-ward in time with the gentle weed;they are a very special thing towatch.”
The Friends of the Rapid BayJetty thanked the media, DeanBrown and Sandra Kanck for theirhelp with the campaign and theGovernment for building the jetty.
Premier Mike Rann will officiallyopen the new jetty on March 11.
