From the Branch President:

Once again, the quality of the items that have been brought out in recent times

has been very impressive. The array of rare and unusual items include many

that are possibly up to and beyond museum standards, and a credit must go to

those that make the effort to bring their treasures along.

At this stage, we are looking at getting .22 ammo from our Wellington sup-

plier. The contact in Auckland has not had any shipments since lock down,

and has no stock. Both H.V. and Sub sonic will be avail at our Sept meeting.

At this stage, we are looking at having Andy Foster along to talk about some

of the historic street names around the Wellington area. Andy is a very knowl-

edgeable gent, and certainly will give a very interesting talk.

Subs 2021 As you may remember, it was agreed to have an annual subs in-

crease for the year 2021. Due to the Covert issues, the committee has dis-

cussed the possibility of having the subs remain at the current rate. This was

debated at the AGM, and a $5 fee raise was agreed to. However we will ask

for your thoughts at the September meeting.

Newsletter editor: Due to personal reasons, Tony is reluctantly stepping

down from the newsletter editor job. We need a new person to take over this

role. Tony will help you

where he can to get the job

done, however we do need a

person that has the skills and

time to do this task. If you

can help, please contact,

Margaret ,Alwyn, or Tony.

Vest Pocket Autographic Kodak (1915-1926): The Vest Pocket Autographic Kodak was the version advertised in the U.S.A. as the "Soldier's camera" during World War I. It was very successful, selling 1,750,000 units. It was of the compact strut folding type and had the meniscus lens or a U.S.-speed 8 Rapid Recti-linear lens.

The camera back had an area through which notes could be written onto the paper backing of the 127 film, the "autographic" feature - invented by Henry J. Gaisman.

more sophisticated lens/shutter combinations.

For those of you who have not been up to the Kaitoke

Range for a while, there have been some major earth-

works and changes undertaken.

Henry has sent through these pictures from a shoot he

was at recently.

This has been a massive job and it has dramatically

improved the usability of the range long term.

Changes at the Kaitoke Range

The gully to the left of the firing point has been opened

up and become a 25m pistol range.

Extended hard standing for parking. And the wet land

become a containment trap area (or drainage pond)

Fill from the sides and pistol range has been laid on the

range floor. Until it settles it is quite soft and muddy.

A path of plastic pallets has been laid to the targets

The access to the new pistol range

Contaminant settling trap, for drainage.

We must commend the Hutt Valley Deerstalkers for investing in and improving this facility. This work will make the range safer and available for more shooters in the future.

You're a 19 year old kid. You are critically wounded and dying in the jungle somewhere in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam . Its November 14, 1965 . LZ (landing zone) X-ray. Your unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense from 100 yards away, that your CO (commanding officer) has ordered the MedEvac helicopters to stop coming in. You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you're not getting out. Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day. Then - over the machine gun noise - you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter. You look up to see a Huey coming in. But.. It doesn't seem real because no MedEvac markings are on it. Captain Ed Freeman is coming in for you. He's not MedEvac so it's not his job, but he heard the ra-dio call and decided he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire anyway. Even after the MedEvacs were ordered not to come. He's coming anyway.

And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 3 of you at a time on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses and safety. And, he kept coming back!! 13 more times! Until all the wounded were out. No-one knew until the mission was over that the Captain had been hit 4 times in the legs and left arm. He took 29 of you and your buddies out that day. Some would not have made it without the Captain and his Huey. Medal of Honour Recipi-ent, Captain Ed Freeman, United States Army, died at the age of 81, in Boise, Idaho. I bet you didn't hear about this hero's passing,
